I’ve been to Modern for an open skate and a private lesson and both were awesome experiences. There are a ton of obstacles for both beginners and higher level skaters. I also recommend Cory if you are interested in private skateboarding lessons. He was knowledgeable when I asked him questions, showed me a variety of obstacles if I was comfortable with them, and he helped me with any tricks/techniques that I wanted to practice. I will definitely be coming back to Modern again in the future!

Been taking my daughter to the drop in group lessons. She has been to two so far. On the way home today she told me she loves skateboarding! Ive been using the Groupon so the price is great. The only reason that I didnt rate 5 stars is because the level of instruction had been variable with class size. The first time she had a lot of instruction because there werent many other kids. This time a lot of kids, not as much instruction.

Modern is an icon of Michigan skateboarding. George has been pushing it in MI for 40 years in all different locations in this state. Know that Modern is a specific thing - it is a huge warehouse skatepark, and it is indoor so you can skate all winter. The ramps are all wood, so they are easier on the body than concrete, and they keep them in good repair. The shop is fairly deep and they’ve got everything that you need. People feel some kind of way that Modern also supports roller skates/blades and scooters, but this is how you stay open 40 years. If you’ve got young kids and you need them kitted up and in a space where they can blow out their energy, this is it

Ive heard great things about this place through my friends. I went here yesterday for the first time and I would 100000% agree! Its an amazing skatepark with ramps for different levels of skaters. I didnt see any major holes in ramps like I do at other skateparks, which makes skating a lot more easier and relaxing. My one slight note for the place is a little bit more air conditioning and more parts for scooters in the shop. But other than that, I would definitely recommend trying this skatepark out and they will be seeing me back very soon!

We had inline skates training with Zach, he is an amazing teacher and person.Ive learned a lot more than what I thought initially and had lots of fun.I would definitely recommend this place for everyone. and the training if its your first time like me to enjoy skating properly and safely.

Dont bother going here if you ride bmx. website says nothing about limited times or days show up and sign up only to find out that bmx is only allowed 2 days a week and only for 2 hrs??? why would I waste paying for only two hrs. what a joke

Staff are completely disinterested in helping customers. Was not even acknowledged until I grabbed an expensive board, and even then staff rushed me through check out. Now I have to go elsewhere to get protective gear and shoes. Alright stock if you know what your doing (I’d assume) but if your looking for help, go elsewhere.

I called earlier in the week to get info on some skates. The guy was super nice and helpful. I ended up going to the shop to buy some Roces M12s. The guys were all working hard when I arrived, greeted me, and helped me get my skates. Ive been having so much fun and will definitely be back to try out the park and buy more gear!

I am so impressed with Modern Skate & Surf. I bought a pair of roller skates from the online store and they shipped extremely fast (even during a pandemic)! And they arrived very quickly all the way to me in California. I will definitely be ordering more skate goodies from them in the future!

Went and got rollerblades today, they were very friendly and helpful and knowledgeable. I even asked if they knew where another business was and the kid looked it up and told me how to get there since I am not from the area. Great experience will recommend.

The last of the big skate/snow shops. Park is ridiculously huge, store has anything and everything skateboard-snowboard related. Super friendly staff, very informative. Stopped on way back to Ohio. Tons of everything, great display of vintage, collectible, autographed decks. Our 3 year old loves her new Vans!!! Thanks guys!!!

I skate there all the time. Great vibes from staff and other skaters. Always clean yet not as slippery as you hear about, you get used to it quick. For what you pay, you get access to a TON of space and obstacles of basically any size and style you like. Family friendly, and usually great music playing.

I shop safety equipment there. Knowledgeable staff, huge selection.Ive never tried the park: I ride a OneWheel and Im more a cruiser than a skater doing stunts on the half pipes, but it looks like they have a lot of fun, well built ramps and stuff for the people who do, as well as a great range of classes.

I really miss the Bitter Cold Showdown that was held here for many years. The park was always very accommodating to rollerbladers, which is rare these days. If I ever come through Detroit again, Ill make sure to stop by!

Nice indoor skatepark and shop employees are nice and the owner is to but the only thing is is the ramps are a little slippery but thats normal but its a very good skatepark gonna keep going as long as its there fully recommend it butbi also hope that they can have a bike session dvery day mzybe for 1 and half hour on mon weds fri sat and leave it normal for tues thurs SundayOther than that go modern

Its really the only indoor skate place in Michigan. There are others, but they are subpar. The only problem with modern is that the ramps get quite Dusty and therefore slippery. The floors are also pretty slippery. I realize theres not much they can do about this. I think if they try to make it look a little cleaner and nicer for parents to hang out oh, that would be a big plus.

I have been to this location a few times for different derby related needs and their staff has been extremely pleasant and helpful every time.They work hard to help you get everything you need, have great advise, and seem genuinely kind.They have a great selection, and work their hardest to find you an alternative if they dont have what youre looking for, you can tell customer satisfaction and their reputation are important to them.A special shout out to Eric! At my first visit he knew I wasnt going to buy anything that day, but still took his time and was so patient helping me and a friend try on a ton of gear in several different sizes. And when I visited recently on 6/4/2019 because I had an issue with my skates, even though he struggled to help me figure it out, he was very patient, pleasant, and friendly through the whole experience.

The place was really nice, I went there for the first time a little while ago staff was really nic and chill, also the place was massive with a store the size of three gas stations with everything you need.

Great skatepark. Good selection of skate essentials. Seasonal snowboard offerings. Theres a wall of scooter stuff and they have rollerblade supplies as well. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Modern has become one of our favorite places to be as a family. The staff is incredible, the park is great for beginners and advanced riders.

Perfect experience. Polite and knowledgeable staff. If you want to shop, fix your gear, skate smooth, bring your dog, charge your phone and wait, watch your kid, or fall asleep in a parent lounge - Modern has you covered.

We went in to buy shoes for my son. He goes through shoes very quickly, so we are here buying new ones at least every 3 months. The young man who was helping us was great, but poor guy was being pulled in a milion different directions as the store got busier. There seemed to be at least 1 other guy working that day, but he was not really helping with the customers. The first young man was there trying to do everything himself. We are very patient people, but we did have to wait for quite a long time just to try on a couple pair of shoes. Have proper staff, or train the ones you do have to pitch in and help with customer service when it gts busy. An hour to buy a pair of shoes is a bit too long!

Staff is super knowledgeable and are extremely knowledgeable in the products they sell. I cant stop enough to express how grateful I am to have got to skate there its a bucket list destination if there ever was one.

Seriously incredible park. Excellent mini ramp and halfpipe and bowl. Excellent street obstacles. Super friendly skateboarders. Excellent facility. Just make sure you have soft wheels; everything is super super slippery wood.

Incredibly helpful employee walked me through picking a board for my 8 year old niece. He put it together in about 3 minutes, listened while I reminisced about being a kid myself, and didnt complain. Gave me some extra information about lessons--which I know theyd make money on, so its good for them to tell me about them. But he told me about them in a way that made it feel like he was more interested in getting my niece to love skateboarding then to make their company money.

Took my son here today and we skated for a few hours. We had a great time. Everyones very nice and it is a great atmosphere. The guy Tyler who works there was really cool and helped out alot. We will be back!

Modern Skate Park is my sons Happy Place, we are from Northern Michigan but have to take my son there everytime we go to the Detroit Area. My son is 15 and has been going to the park since he was about 9 and has never had a bad experience with other skaters. George, the owner is a great guy and hires a great crew that is knowledgeable and always nice.

Cool place...very hard to find the driveway...not clearly marked at the road. By the time your GPS says youve arrived, youve already passed the driveway.

Is a really nice and good skate park may look low key for where it is but its for scooter roller bladers and skate boarders.

Great place for both kids and adults. No matter your skill level, theyll treat you fairly and youll likely get to know the staff on a first-name basis. Even in their shop - where youd almost expect to be led toward certain buys - the salesmen will lead you to precisely what fits your needs properly.

The staff here were awesome, the clientele were super friendly, the venue amazing. So much to do. The little shop had nice clothing and shoes. Had a service shop too, with lots of accessories. Pretty fun venue, perfect for everyone.

Super slippery here cant really land any tricks down any of the sets due to dust buildup and slippage. Be careful skating here if you skate fast. Also pay right away! as soon as you walk in the door! Dont get comfortable or warm up a little bit or anything.. otherwise the people working there will pester you about a wristband to the point where you dont even wanna skate anymore...

My son started going here a few months ago, and the progress hes making is insane!! Every single week we see improvements, new skills, and he loves it! I highly recommend Modern Skate and Surf to kids AND adults. The staff is all ages, also. My 8 year old loves that his coach is only 15 lol. They are very nice people.

There is a lot to do and a lot to choose from in the shop. They sell skate shoes and clothing, as well as anything you need for your set-up. Has one of the largest selections to choose from in Michigan. Definitely coming back here again.
