We were pleasantly surprised by the Imperial Centre for the Arts. An old brick tobacco factory was transformed into a Childrens Museum, Theater, Planetarium, art studios, and two floors of public art galleries. The galleries encouraged interactivity with sketching stations, a mini-performance stage for kids, and wood tiles for tower building.

It was a great experience with learning and playing for toddlers thru school age children. The kids can play throughout the museum and they announce the planetarium shows so you have time to gather the kids and take a break to enjoy a little beautiful lesson about stars. Open concept so you can keep your eyes on more than one child as well.

We went during Feb 2019 with out of town company. The interactive play stations made it the perfect place to take a 3 year old. Some of the child-oriented stations included: giant bricks to build with, a grocery store with child sized carts, a kitchen, and a doctors office. The Connect 4 game was literally child-sized...the framework (to drop the disks in) was as tall as our 3 year old. Most intriguing for the grown-ups was the pvc piping that made music while using flip-flops. Yup, you got to see it! There was a small alcove that had stuffed bees (the insects) to play with and other bee oriented educational information.

Recently visited for the first time. Took my three year old to the planetarium to see the Big Bird One World One Sky show. My son loved the show and all of the exhibits. It was my experience that the staff were not friendly and appeared apathetic toward the children. Dont Run! was frequently yelled out as the excited children ran toward exhibits. It appeared that the staff were mainly there to stop the children from doing anything that wasnt allowed. The person facilitating the planetarium shows was extremely melancholy and provided many rules to the show including, sit still or take off your light up shoes and do not sing any other songs except the ones in the show. There was no enthusiasm for the subject matter.Lastly, as we were playing upstairs with the puppets, I noticed a man walking around with a holstered handgun in the waist of his pants. I talked to a staff member who said they were taking care of it. I am a gun owner and I understand concealed carry, but I do not want to go to a childrens museum and be around guns. I was told the facility does not allow firearms.Overall it is nice to have a facility like this in the area however I was not overly impressed.

Childrens museum rotates exhibits with other museums, so Rocky Mount gets the same things that you will see in places like Charlotte and Raleigh.Theater is state of the art with local productions. Eight weekends a year you will find a local production, plus Christmas concerts, and childrens shows.Art gallery is nice and also rotates. All of this is in a renovated historic facility in the heart of the downtown.

The plays here are under publicized. If you get the chance to see one, do it! Also, they center took a hit with the loss of Milton & Miles

The Childrens Museum needs some replanning and a science auditor. They had fun activitites downstairs but the information they were trying to teach was over my 7-year olds head; upstairs was below him (and had two birthday parties going on). They also have the original food pyramid (which was updated in 2005!) and the tounge map (which has never been correct).
