Wow. Thats not a good wow at all. I decided to stop by and play a round on a whim. Boy was that a mistake. I talked with the other guys in my group and theyve played there a few times this year and they told me that the course was in the best condition theyve seen it in. Huge shocker to me. Theres no sand in the sand trap. The greens are covered in ant hills, so putting is quite interesting. Tee boxes are being overrun by weeds. Some of the rough is so long, someone could easily break their wrist. Theres no actual care happening. Ive worked maintenance for public and private courses, so I have a good idea of how it all works. They simply neglect this aspect. The clubhouse looks like they cant afford to stock it, which is probably the case. They take no pride in the appearance of their course. Avoid this place unless youre a beginner and looking to save money.

My motive for playing golf is to have fun. This course certainly delivers. It was $9 to play 9 holes, and it’s a pretty cool course. The terrain is relatively difficult, but that adds to the fun of the course. While yes, the course hasn’t been maintained very well, how can you complain when it’s only $9 to play?! Overall, I would recommend this course to someone who wants a low pressure, fun course, but certainly not for someone expecting a Masters level course.

Sad. I have played redgated a thousand times and sadly there will be no thousand and one. They must be getting ready to close this place, so if you want to do a trip down memory lane play it, but prepare yourself for a very poor experience. On the plus side it was $18, very quick to play and the guy in the pro shop was nice

The rough had not been cut recently. Very thick and tall. Our foursome lost alot of balls. Course is very hilly. Reasonable green fee of under $40 on a Saturday. Greens and fairways very good shape.

The layout and use of the landscape, especially the hilly challenges, blind shots, use of water and elevations are awesome. This course, when properly maintained, is a great course to play. Unfortunately, the greens, fairways, rough and sand traps have been neglected to the point that it takes away from the overall course appeal. If you dont mind inconsistent weedy greens, sand traps lacking sand and fairways missing consistent grass, then you will enjoy the course.

I decided to look through the recent reviews first before posting this, as I like to normally point out the good when reviewing something online. Unfortunately, after playing there this passed week, I have nothing good to report. On top of that, the same generic response from RG on every bad review, tells me they must be getting ready to turn these fairways in backyards of homes. Tee boxes are nothing but sand and weeds. Fairways could be harvested for hay, greens covered in ant hills, and mold. Massive, unmarked ditches beside the cart path. It takes hard work and care to maintain a golf course, and sadly, both of these are 100% missing at what used to be a great course. Save your money and tee off somewhere else. :/

Not sure what I was expecting but for the price of the booking, I was expecting a halfway playable course. The tee boxes were hard as rock, and mostly dirt, could barely get my tees in the ground. Also this isnt so much the courses fault but there had to be over a hundred broken tees in the tee boxes. Fairways were patchy and had a big weed issue. The greens were bumpy, amazingly slow, and ridden with divots. Yeah its a municipal course but its pretty obvious it lacks regular maintenance. Also, there is a HUGE goose problem. Theyd huddle in the fairways, tee boxes and greens, I was more concerned about killing one off the tee than where my shot was going to go. And of course with that many geese, there are droppings EVERYWHERE. The only real positive element to this course, to my surprise, was that the bunkers were in great shape.Ive played significantly better courses for half the money. Keep your wallet shut and move along.

If you have a golf itch and almost any course will do then this will fit the bill. To be honest I played it last year and swore that I would never play it again no matter what. Then the GolfNow app had it for $13 and I figured for the price of range balls hit off of crappy carpet I might as well do this and if it really sucked I would play nine and go home. The course was in pretty good shape and the guy at the desk sent me off as soon as I got there so with no one in front of me I did the whole 18 in 3 hours. Now for the layout, its dumb. Blind shots with heavy rough on the other side and a couple of holes I wasnt sure which direction I was supposed to hit.All in all if the golf itch gets bad enough again and Im in that area AND the price is low I will probably play it at least one more time

Went to the course on 9/24 and thought it was in great shape for it being the end of the season and basically having no rain for quite a while. You cant beat 23 bucks for 18 in Montgomery County MD. Also the beers are ice cold and have the best price! I will be a regular here.

Absolutely Horrible !Grass growing in the clay pits they refer to as Sand Traps, 5” rough slows play because no one can find their ball if it rolls off the fairway, nothing about this course is in good shape. They left all the grass clippings on the putting greens, so no one could putt without cleaning a path for your ball. Our foursome all agreed to quit after 10 holes today. I will never play this course again. Complete waste of money.

Im dissapointed that this course is in such bad shape. I used to go there 4-5 years ago and loved going there. If I had rated it then, I would have given it a solid 4 star.Im no pro. Im an 18 handicap and I have played in some expensive and some very cheap golf course establishments. This was hard to watch. As I was playing, I started to see the sand bunkers with little to no sand in them and that was replaced with weeds. I thought maybe just the first hole. Nope, every single bunker. Without getting into more details it was soo bad.Its a shame because the layout of this course top rated and competes with the best of them. Yes, only a few holes are pedestrian. but it is a shame Red Gate doesnt pay the money to maintain or to make this a top course to play. Totally run down.Im not going back until I hear theyre renovating OR it was sold to a better company that will make the couse eager for someone to come back again and again.About the staff... They were very friendly and always had a smile on their faces. THEY should be working at a better facility.

I play here regularly and its hard to match the price. Folks are nice, play can be slow, the course is challenging but its 1/2 the price of other public courses nearby...I say thats pretty good. Recently the course is in difficult shape, the lack of rain has made the fairways very hard and bumpy, and tee boxes rough.

9/1/16 TERRIBLE Course conditions. Any other MCG course has to be a better option. I think they forgot what maintenance was. Greens are the like putting on shag carpet and if you find a good patch of grass in the fairway you are one of the lucky ones. The best part is with the lack of sand and the abundance of rocks in the bunkers, you get to ruin your clubs as extra punishment.2 stars only because twilight pricing is affordable. Golf anywhere else.

Redgate has been in deplorable condition since Billy Casper Golf took over operations/management of the course in 2012. The City of Rockville gave up on the course and put it out to bids for operating and maintaining the course. Casper Golf, whose reputation for maintenance on the course they operate is well known in the DC area for doing little to nothing on most of the courses they operate also pertains to RedGate. The fairways at RedGate are so poorly maintained that the fairways there are the equivalent of the rough at 99.9% of all the other public courses in Montgomery County. Poor maintenance to say the least.Sand bunkers are the laughing stock of the golfers in the D.C. area--most are dirt and rocks.Casper golf has spent the past 6 years lying to the City of Rockville as to how they will fix the problems of the poor bunkers, among other things. Little to nothing has been done.In the period May 15 to 28, the fairways and rough have grown so high that goats are needed. Grass in most of the fairways is 2 to 3 in. high, and the rough on some holes is 6 in. high.RedGate will tell anyone that asks about these conditions that all the rain weve had has moved their schedule of cutting back. Nonsense!!! Other county public courses dont have that problem--their fairways and rough are well maintained.RedGates greens have become very bumpy since they were aerated in April. No smooth putts on any hole.If you want to play a course with those kind of conditions, feel free. Its no wonder the green/cart fees are so low--no one wants to play it in those conditions. Never a problem getting a tee-time!!!!! Good Luck. Bring plenty of golf balls since you will lose several on that course.

I wouldn’t say that I really liked this place but it’s not a great spot for real golfers. Passed by the place to meet with a friend and I didn’t like it as much. I would really love if they tried to improve on their amenities. I don’t see myself here any time soon.

Far overpriced during the course reparation that was going on this weekend. Greens were recently aerated and sanded, but fares were not cut down accordingly. Grass was thick and not well maintained. Cart paths need re-paved as well. Would not recommend.

9/1/16 - This course is one of the worst conditions I have ever played at. There was bare dirt in the tee box, in the fairways, in the rough, even on several greens! I didnt see a single bunker with sand in them, they were all rocks, dirt and grass. The cart had serious issues taking off, the brakes were nearly shot and the shocks were nonexistent. I will never EVER come here again when the Montgomery County courses are so much better maintained and cheaper. There was no starter to keep the pace. I will actively discourage anyone I come in contact with to avoid this place.

8 mins between tee times on a Sunday is totally unrealistic for the caliber of player out here. No ranger. No starter. 5some in front of us taking multiple mulligans. 3:30 mins for 9 holes, asked for a rain check for the second nine due to pace and was told no. Interesting course layout, but I will not be coming back. Theyre clearly trying to squeeze in tee times for the money.

Very disappointed. I made an early tee time figuring I would beat the crowds, but as I was called to the starter I find out I will be joined (and carted) with a man, his wife and son who announced, were not very good. Now Im not that great myself, but no joke, mom and dad were each taking 10 to 12 strokes per hole with 2-3 practice swings on every attempt. I tried politely to speed them up to no avail. After 2 1/2 hours we finally made the turn and I had to bail as I was out of time.So I went to the club house the get my rate adjusted only to find out they flat out refused to give me anything but a rain check or tokens to their miserable excuse for a practice range.I was flabbergasted. I guess the new management did get rid of some of the geese and the horrid crap littering the first and third holes but how about getting a Marshall out there and make sure people are keeping pace, and if they are not, they should at least give people their money back. If this is what the new management is about, It looks like all they care about is packing the course and collecting cash, because they sure dont seem to care about their customers. So unless your willing to put up with a 5 plus hour round, shoddy conditions and a crappy practice range, steer clear of this place.

This is where I race to after work. Have been doing so before Billy Casper Golf took over and loved it before and after. Before - it was REALLY inexpensive. 20 bucks w/cart for twilight rounds but I admit, although the holes were great (lots of elevation changes, decent balance of water and other hazards throughout the course) the fairways and rough and greens were not that well maintained. BCG has done a great job cleaning up the course, so much so that it almost feels like a different course. If youre able to sign up under one of their membership plans (and can play during weekdays), do it - it is probably a BETTER deal than before. If you throw 75 bucks down for the advantage card it will pay off as you get discounts and early twilight and the fares will end up being comparable to the old muni rates. The range is a bit overpriced in my opinion - but theyve also done a great job cleaning up the range. In short - they know what theyre doing over there, the course is fun and challenging enough but not impossible (slope rating of 130 I think from blacks) with LOTS of blind shots so it helps if youre playing with someone who knows the course, and the service is excellent. If you plan on playing frequently mostly at one course in the area this is where I would recommend to go

The tee boxes were in pretty good shape. The fairways were filled in cut nice. The rough was long and punishing. The greens were a little slow, but I like them like that since it gives me a chance to be a little aggressive. There were some pretty exciting holes with some real elevation changes. Since it was my first time, there were several holes I would have played different so I’m looking forward to another shot at the course. When I play at a course for the first time, I call this unknown knowledge my ‘new course index’. I got a 92 with a bogey which I think is a stoke or two below my handicap (17).The driving range was a little strange for a new person. You had to walk along a dirt trail next to a chain link fence to get to it. For a new person, I felt like was really far away from the starting hole and then felt rushed. They had really nice soft mats at the driving range which I like a lot.I went on a groupon, but I didn’t read the small print close enough and my groupon was not really a deal. The guy at the pro shop must have felt sorry for me and gave me complimentar drink tickets and a bucket of balls for my golf friend and I, although they might have been part of the groupon deal.Everyone I met at the course was friendly, easy to talk to and helpful. I got paired up with a local who loved to give his opinion of each hole at the tee box. He was a real nice guy who was a pleasure to play with.I gave it a 4 out of 5 because of the odd access to the driving range.

Redgate is a good golf course with a challenging but risk reward layout. I have never had a problem with anyone who works there. Yes, there is a goose problem but please explain to me how to deter a wild animal, that flies, in the center of a metropolitan area. The pace of play can be slow/grueling at some times, however, this is a municipal course. 2.5 hour front nine with beginner golfers is expected, this isnt a course where you can spray the ball and get away with it. Frankly, they paid the same amount of money to have access to the course and were only 15 minutes off pace. Not bad for the hacks described above. The greens are always fantastic here. Number 2 green and number 11 are usually the only greens that struggle. I think Billy Casper is doing a great job with this course and I have played on far worse conditions on courses that charge 3x the amount as Redgate. Want to play a fast round early in the morning, then I suggest looking into a private club. Anywhere in this area on a muni is not going to be a speedy round. I play Redgate a lot and have always had an enjoyable round and have always had a professional experience with staff and management.

We played Redgate on the 14th of July with an early morning tee time taking advantage of the Early Bird Breakfast and Golf special (advertised on their web site). It seems the staff and management arent on the same page since the kitchen wasnt open to get the breakfast sandwich. In fact, the clubhouse wasnt open for our tee time. Overall the condition of the course was great. Tee boxes and fairways had grass, greens werent hard and the rough was playable. We got our breakfast sandwich (hotdog) when we finished our round. Redgate is quite a ways away from me but Id come back and play again.
