The first time we have been to the Byrd Theatre since February! It was a fund raiser for the ORIGINAL Mighty Wurlitzer Theater Organ! Michael Britt was the guest organist for a special showing of Nosferatu, 1922 silent movie based on Dracula. There were very limited tickets sold. We felt very comfortable at the Byrd. It is very safe, it is very clean, there is plenty of space between audience members, mask wearing is expected. Whenever you get a chance to go to the Byrd and hear the organ, do it!
Wonderful night of hearing Bob Gulledge playing Christmas songs on their mighty Wurlitzer organ and then watching Elf! Well organized and seats spaced apart for safety.
The Byrd Theatre was really cool. They mentioned it being around for 90 years and it looks like a well kept old theatre. I went on a weekend and they had an organ player do a short show before the movie, which was really interesting to see. The movie picture and sound were just as good as any newer theater and the tickets were only $4. Im not sure how they manage such low prices and I would have been happy to pay more. Overall, great experience.
Wonderful staff, beautiful building, and a great movie. Definitely going back!
Love the Byrd its a really cheap date with the kiddos.
Very beautiful love the old theatre view
Such an amazing theatre!!! Was traveling through and stopped in. Gorgeous historical theatre. Will go back any time Im there again. Owner super friendly and outgoing.
This theater is hands down my favorite, and Ive been to a lot of theaters. The tickets are only 4 bucks and they dont charge you over the top for food. I can get 2 tickets, 2 large drinks, a large popcorn, and candy for about $25 max. They play good movies, they always have classics, marathons, double features. Then they have kids movies during the daytime. The theater itself is beautiful. The staff are super nice and welcoming, its always clean and well kept. We go here once a week. Ive seen: Ma, Peanut Butter Falcon, John Wick 3, Hustlers, and the Harry Potter Marathon off the top of my head. This place is a gem.
Cant wait for them to reopen. Go away Covid!
I love the prices and the theater is stunning.
We love going here for a date night. You see a great film at a great price. Plus you get all of the charm of the beautiful theater. Its in a great location- we usually get ice cream, dinner, or drinks before or after the movie.
Great show. The seats in the center section are very comfortable, more than most other theaters i have been to recently. The popcorn and drinks are reasonably priced, and refills are half off that.
Beautiful theater cant recommend going more. Saturdays Wurlitzer performances are especially great. If youre in Richmond or even just close by you need to check out the Byrd.
Amazing turn of the century Theater. Beautiful architecture from the Brass entrance way to the giant antique crystal light which hangs from the ceiling. Go on Sat nights to see Bob Gulledge rise out of the pit and play The Great Wurlitzer which is original and was played during silent films in the 1920s. Bob is amazing and a super treat for your family to experience one of the only organs left in its original theater that is still functioning. Bob only plays on Sat nights for about 10 min before the Movie starts. Movie prices and food are very reasonable and staff is super nice. You will not be disappointed I assure you!
What a fabulous old theater. Its absolutely stunning inside with the marble walls and huge chandeliers. The chairs have recently been recovered making it more comfortable. The popcorn is the best anywhere. They play old movies here, but its still a really fun place to spend a few hours. There is so much history here.
My favorite theater ever! The inside is beautiful and has that golden age of film vibe. The tickets are super cheap and Galaxy diner is down the street where pints of PBR are about 2 dollars.
Very fancy old cinema. This is not only some cinema, but an attraction! A must for movie fans. And its cheap, too. Pls go there to see wonderfull architecture and help preserving this marvelous piece of cinematic history.
I went to the Byrd theater for the first time today. I went there for a meeting called Mindful Mornings. The theatre was beautiful inside. The architecture looked old, but it was enjoyable. Inside the theater was too dark. The sound system want so great. I was listening to a guest speaker and it was very difficult to hear them even with a microphone. The seats were very old. Some of then were bursting open with the stuffing showing. They were very difficult to push down in order to sit in them. They were pretty comfortable though. The theatre manager spoke and he was very informative about the theatre and funding for it. He explained that it is being fixed up. The theatre isnt the best place for a meeting like I went to there. While Im glad they are supportive of the event we had, I think the theatre is just better suited for movies and plays. I hope to return there to see a movie one day.
Nice little theater. The tickets are really cheap and they play movies that are in the regular theater. I like the classic decorations and how they kept a lot of the original pieces. I would just make sure to bundle up and bring blankets if you go late at night or in the winter because the concrete floors make it really cold in there, and I dont think they have a heater. Also, if you are sensitive to very loud volumes, like I am, maybe consider bringing some earplugs.
I love visiting this place whenever I take a trip to Richmond. The tickets are still the same price and its just so nice and cozy for date night. The lines are still long to enter this theater and thats how you know they are still in stlye
I loved the atmosphere. It was great to sit and and see what it was like in the 50s for movie patrons. The seats were comfortable and I liked the organ music and the old decor. It is a step back in time
Love the Byrd Theater! Its an old theater, beautifully restored, must see to appreciate.
A well maintained piece of history. This was our first visit. Hard to believe this theater has been in existence for 90 years! A pleasant experience!
Such a fun place to catch a movie. Located in the heart of Carytown, theres so much fun shopping and eating to do nearby. These are second run movies for $2 a ticket. Usually a family friendly movie in the afternoon and then an PG-13 or R for the evening show. Popcorn, candy, and a limited selection of Coke products available at a little better price than a regular theater. One 3rd of the seating has been replaced as part of the remodeling project. Be advised the seats in the old sections are in various stages of disrepair.
In the heart of Carytown, with unbeatable prices, The Byrd Theatre is the heart and soul of Richmond. Virtually unchanged since the 1920s, it truly is an ornate, elegant evening activity, allowing you to step into the past to a more sophisticated time. Enjoy a movie under a crystal chandelier and elaborate moulding, or enjoy the organ player on Saturday nights.
Must see iconic theatre for tourists and locals alike!!One of the last movie palaces in the country. They just put in new seats which are great. Ticket prices are super cheap and show recent movies from the main theaters. They have very nice staff too! Great selection of drinks and candies along with the classic movie theater popcorn. Definitely delicious. Many times their balcony is open which is a real treat! If you have time, go to a midnight movie on Saturday. What a cool experience. I grew up at this theatre and went to them all the time. They show cult hits that people get excited about and recite the lines.
Good movie, great ambiance. Seats are uncomfortable by todays standards but you go to see the place. They just dont build like that anymore.
Great place! Very affordable and nice, new seats. Will definitely go again!
Beautiful place! We watched The star is born. The sound quality was good.
The Byrd is still a work in progress, but an iconic movie house. Best seats are in the middle.
Lovely restored theater! Ticket price is $4 a person and snacks were very reasonable. They have a long list of old and new movies, plus various series & specials each month. Well worth the drive and parking issues on Cary Street!!
Gorgeous interior, a Richmond classic.
Likes: Its GORGEOUS and a great reminder of how cinema used to be done. There arent many theaters that run the variety of films that the Byrd does and even fewer that would have a host talk about the history and concepts of classic films before running them. And theres an original Wurlitzer, which is pretty damn cool.Dislikes: Seating is a little cramped and thats just how it is. Theres no parking lot and thats also just how it is.
As far as movie theatres go, this is by far one of my favorite ones. Movie prices are inexpensive, snacks arent at eye gouging prices, and it has an overall wonderful ambiance. My only isssues were the old seats. First one that I sat in was very uncomfortable, but I simply switched one seat over and boom. problem was solved!
It is a very good place to spend an evening with friends and family. The architecture is incredibly captivating
I cant not give this place 5 stars. The history of this place speaks for itself and I love seeing the community come together to preserve our piece of history.
Great place to go on a first date. Although the prices have went up by 100% it’s still great To go catch a movie you wouldn’t pay full price for.The sound system has improved and the seating is tight and a little uncomfortable. It was designed for a smaller time. Like 1940s weighted people lol.The Concession pricing is congruent with all theater pricing and where they probably make most of their money. The managers are great and understanding. The night I went the floors were filthy. I almost broke my ankle sliding into the aisle. It’s still a great place and I would recommend it.
Love it! So nostalgic. Such a classicly designed and renovated theater. They really did a great job on the rehab.Love the Wurlitzer (organ)!! Really takes me back. Cant beat the prices either!Maybe they can show cartoon shorts before the headliner? That would be perfect!!
This aged worn landmark movie palace is a great community resource. Hosting a variety of film festivals, themed series, as well as local creative efforts and offering a venue for the cultural and socially conscious makes The Byrd a fixture for today and the future. The new seats are more comfortable, but may be snug for a larger person.
Before the movie started, they actually had someone play the pipe organ for about 10 minutes, which was so neat to see and hear! The bathrooms were a bit cramped, the seats were wobbly and tended to list to one side (which made sitting there for a few hours slightly uncomfortable on my back). There was also so. much. gum. under all the seats which is pretty gross. But all in all, the movie was so much fun to see, the price was so much less than a regular theater, and the location was gorgeous.
The Byrd Theatre is a true Richmond experience. Great movies, and better popcorn. The inside of the theatre is simply beautiful. Additionally if you can visit on a night where the organist is playing you absolutely should. He consistently puts on a wonderful show before the movie. If youre just in town for a few days, or if youve been here all your life and this has somehow passed you by, do yourself a favor and visit the Byrd.
Gorgeous place that has all the quirks of a historical theater. Seats are squeaky because they’ve held the butts of so many people watching so many cool movies. Love the films they show especially when they bring back old ones (like SCREAM for Halloween time!) and special features. RVA is lucky to have The Byrd still in business!
Improved seating makes for a nicer experience, but the higher (yet still reasonable) prices make it harder to bring out the entire family.
Beautiful inside. Great pricing but there were mice while enjoying a movie
The Byrd Theatre is one of the true treasures of Carytown. It is a grand and opulent theater that has been in continuous operation since 1928. You have not lived unless you have had a singalong with The Mighty Whirlitizer. Be sure you purchase your tickets online because shows do sell out.
Husband and I adore the Byrd for cheap movie date nights. Our first real date was here too! Such good memories and even at the increased price of $4 a ticket, it’s a bargain. I’m loving the new website as well.
The Byrd is a great place to watch recent and old movies in a unique setting with friendly staff. The theater itself has beautiful architecture thats hard to find these days. The prices are cheap, especially compared to chain movie theaters, and the proceeds go towards restoration/renovation. If you live in Richmond, check it out.
So beautiful. Do many memories. Thank you for caring and continuing to restore.
What a lovely and ornate movie palace! This gem was built in the 1920s and features second run and classic films. Its got style ambiance and you are supporting your local community by visiting whenever possible. I had lived in Richmond for over 12 years before finally making it here. Im so glad I now know of its magnificence and beauty! :)
You cant beat the luxury and setting of this Landmark 1920s movie and vaudeville theater
Great place to bring your whole family just make sure to pull out cash BEFORE going to get in line. They have ATMs but youll slow everything down. Reasonably priced concession stand and alcoholic beverages offered if you are of age.
Love this place. Was staying overnight in Richmond as part of a roadtrip. Happened upon this gem. Also amazed when the Wurlitzer came up through the floor and was treated to some great playing. Well worth seeing. Lots of original features lovingly retained.
Wonderfully ornate old theater that has been restored. We were there to hear the Wurlitzer organ played. Really nice experience
Came to see Suspiria with Goblin performing, lived in Virginia my whole life and had no idea the theater would be so beautiful and historic, the chairs definitely still tell a story about the Good ole days (just ask my lower back) but still worth the experience.
The new seats with the cup holders are better but I was slightly disappointed. I dont think they are as comfortable and more narrow than I expected. However better leg room. Its a great place to watch a movie and the movie organ and chandelier certainly adds to the the atmosphere.
Cute theater. Came here for the showing of the Victor Movie. The Byrd Theater is a great place to have a special private event.
This is my absolute favorite place to go to the movies. As a university student, the ticket prices are affordable and that makes the experience even more enjoyable- knowing that Im not paying $15 for a popcorn. I wish that more people came here! This is a wonderful establishment and everyone should see movies here. Makes for a wonderful date or night out.
A beautifully maintained theatre built in 1928. Definitely worth seeing.
Beautiful theater. Had not been here in years. Awesome experience! Ethan Hawke was there and he spoke with the audience after his move, Blaze.
If you want to have a good time watching a movie, come to the Byrd. Inexpensive tickets with some amazing popcorn, and now that the seats have been renovated its comfier than ever. The staff is always great, and there are few to none trailers so the movie starts pretty close to the time on the ticket. When I went there for the 3rd Harry Potter, you could tell the staff were fans and wanted everyone to have an amazing time. Excellent place.
I live two blocks from the Byrd and take my son here all the time...just wish the seats were a little more comfortable!
Byrd theater is a good theater to go to if you want to see old movies. I love the piano when it comes up out of the floor.
Been going since I was a kid, happy to see it still standing and improving through the years
Just overall a great place to watch a movie. Delicious popcorn wth a vegan butter. Shows both new movies and classics. Check out the website for up to date showtimes and any special events coming up.
Historic movie theater with beautiful decor and great ticket prices. Totally worth waiting the extra few weeks for new releases to land here. If you have friends or family visiting from out of town, try and take them on a night when the movie is preceded by a pipe organ performance. Theyll love it, and its an inexpensive and low-key way to give them a true Richmond experience.
Always a pleasure to see something here. The renovations are coming along nicely, and the new seats in the center section are a MAJOR difference. Amazing ambience!
Cool but creeps me out
Always loved the byrd its been here foreverrrr and Ive gone there every year at least once never let me down always cheap and great movie selections
An old school movie experience at a great price. Wait just a little while for movies to leave the big theaters and see them for a fraction of the price in this historical venue. Lots of great dinner options just steps away if you want to combine dinner and a movie for a night out.
All my life I had to come to Byrd Theatre because it was within my budget. I have never been disappointed and I love the organ performance before the showing!’ You have to come to Byrd Theatre because it is an experience!
Lovely time and experience. A beautiful historic theatre.
Beautiful, awesome antique theatre, with a great staff and selection of snacks. Comfortable seats and a great screen to look at. You can really see and enjoy the history here, the story of this place is amazing I highly recommend checking it out. Also, after you leave the theatre youre in Carytown which has lots of bars and restaurants and many many other places you can enjoy. This place comes highly recommend by me.
Such a beautiful place with a ton of history, the seats suck but other than that such an awesome place
Good experience as always . Its great for what its worth in price and atmosphere
It is a great theater. But the chairs are very over used. The Byrd Theater needs to replace there chairs.
Absolutely wonderful historical place to go watch a movie
Love the experience, not the seats. Going to the Byrd theatre is living history. The building is beautiful and on Saturday there is an organ show before the movie. The prices are low to get in and almost reasonable at the concession stand.Bring the family and enjoy.I will add that the seats are also sized for the 1920s and can get a little uncomfortable compared to the new multiplex style seating. It doesnt stop me from enjoying the visit, but I have heard complaints ;-)
Awesome experience, everything you expect out of a movie theatre, plus some. It is an awesome old theater that was built in 1928, and continues to show movies in its one giant room. Has lots of specials and lots of history, it even has a balcony. The tickets are priced for what they should be, and are definitely not overpriced like most big franchise theatres.
I used to visit often. I havent been noticing any good movies playing lately
I love Byrd: the buildings is old, the seats are old (some of them), it even has old water fountains. the popcorn is cheap. the tickets are cheap and the candy is cheap. perfect place for a fun, cheap date
A Richmond landmark, the theater has character you just cant find in multiplexes. prices on concessions are half of normal theatres too, and i think the popcorn is better too.
Its a beautiful old building, but the seats are in serious need of replacement. I will go back because of the lovely facade.
Fun, interesting, venue... trip back in time to 1928!! Very ornamental... Big screen, and wonderful popcorn... with real butter!! And the best part is the absolutely reasonable pricing!! Two large drinks, one large popcorn (did I say real butter), one large candy, and two people for less than $28!! Im looking forward to my first Saturday night so I can hear the mighty, original, Wurlitzer!!
Simply a RVA classic! Even at $4 this was a unique experience with a picture no longer in theaters and performance on the mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ.
They play classic movies and recent releases for $4-$5 in a beautiful, historic theater. We love going there.
Went to see SpiderMan: Far from home...The theater is excellent! Service: Superb!! Show: My Kids Went crazy! And... On top of that it began with a Love showing off of the Organ they had built in the stage! Think I want to go back for the Phantom of The Opera! #BigFacts
The Byrd is a $5 second run theater with cool employees, Amazing 30s original decor, decent popcorn and Live Pipe Organ performance on Fri and Sat. Also - if you work around the neighborhood, you can get in Free!
(I only come on movie nights.)Its downtown, a place I love; food, drink, & bathrooms are available; recent movies are shown; a fantastic organ performance happens beforehand; and a beautiful theater to top it off? Come with friends and youre guaranteed a good time.
This is an amazing Movie Palace that is a must-see when you visit Richmond. The variety of movies both old and new is incredible and the building itself is iconic.
The Byrd is a RVA icon! Many sublime leisure moments spent here. It has morphed but has managed to maintain that yesteryear appeal from the concession girls in flapper costume to the redone interior and new upholstered seats. Was great to see a good turnout for the recent viewing of vintage movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame with live organist accompaniment.Usually shows higher rated movies a bit after first run, always great to catch, or view again for much less than regular prices at commercial movie houses.
The prices are perfect especially for a family of four and they play great movies!!!!
Never a bad night paying $4 for a Quinton Tarantino movie!
Our family loves the Byrd. Its a Richmond staple and everyone should go and see the opulant movie palace. Popcorn, soda, and movie tickets are all super affordable.Extra tip- The middle section has the nicer seats and if you are tall, you will want an aisle seat.
One of the ancient, beautiful theaters that are in the rich cities of America, like Chicago, Detroit, New York. On Saturdays an organ plays.
