I just want to say how clean and safe the Y is since we have reopened, all members and staff are vigilant about wearing masks, cleaning the facility, and even checking temperature before anyone comes into the facility. Definitely worth checking out if you are looking for a clean and safe place to workout, swim during the pandemic.

I would give this place 0 stars if I could. Would never sign up for the summer camp again. After signing up for the camp, the membership director called me and told me it would be cheaper overall if I signed up for a membership. I said fine if it makes the overall cost cheaper. What a mistake. After 2 months of being billed, I realized there was no way that it could be cheaper. I visited the membership staff and they couldn’t figure out the math. I told them to stop the membership fee. It stopped for the duration of the summer and then randomly started up again in the fall. I called and they told me I needed to sign a form to have it stop again and that I had to rush down there to avoid the September fee. This was after being there every weekday for the entire summer. I got out of work early to rush over there. I was just charged the fee again....can’t wait to make yet another trip over there

I have been a member for a year and a half. They completed renovations a year ago and have a nice facility. All of the staff members I have spoken with are very friendly. My biggest complaint is the fact that 10 months of the year, the swim team has exclusive use of the pool 6 evenings a week. As someone who tries to visit the gym around 5:00 pm after work, that means I am paying for the pool, but cannot use it most of the year. It would be a great service to the members if the management could find a way to keep a few lanes of the pool open to members by having some of the swim teams do other workouts such as running in the track, activities in the gym, or in the cycling room. If you want a gym with a pool and cant visit before 4:00pm or after 8:00pm, find another facility.

My family has been coming here pretty much since the place opened. I go to the YMCA occasionally while I am home visiting my parents as I am still a member. I have belonged to LA Fitness, Fitness Connection, and Lifetime Fitness/Athletic so this is my baseline. Prior to the renovation this would be a 2 star given the lack of weight lifting equipment. BUT, after the renovation and new equipment with the rigs theyve installed they have plenty of bench press and squat racks on the rigs themselves. To me, this addition shifts towards a younger demographic rather than an older one which is a brilliant move. At this point the equipment is up to par with any gym I have ever been to with the exception of Lifetime which is to be expected. The rating of this gym takes a massive hit when it comes to their staff. It is true the staff is for the most part, young kids in high school, possibly college.. but that doesnt mean they cant be competent. No issues with the older tenured trainers. The other reviews are correct in that they stand around, have no people skills, and are overall less than helpful to downright horrific. But, heres the more damning part... I have been in the gym lifting while some of the younger trainers are working out... and they arent lifting with proper form and/or are trying to lift WAY more weight than they should be which could lead to an injury which makes me question how they got a job in the first place when it seems they are the ones in need of private lessons to learn how to lift. This does not set a good example and creates an uncomfortable vibe. Furthermore, for the amount of money that a membership costs I think the YMCA should consider having their staff help out the gym goers with their form if they see someone lifting in a manner that is incorrect and that could cause severe permanent damage. It takes 10 seconds to do that. Sure, there is no $$$ outside of a private training session but to sit and watch someone damn near cripple themselves.. not a good look.Bottom line: Equipment is now great and sufficient. But management needs to strongly consider vastly improving the training staff and restrict who can give private training sessions, specifically with the young trainers who dont know to properly lift themselves. With a great staff, there is no reason this place cant be consistently rated 5 stars.

So, I’m not going to shoot down this place altogether...BUT, tonight I had an experience like none other. There’s a very nice cleaning lady, who usually begins cleaning an hour before the gym closes - no problem. Tonight though, she for some reason thought it would be a good idea to flood the drains with industrial grade bleach as a few ladies and myself were in the showers. Combine that with the steam, and I was literally choking and gasping for air and had to immediately get out of the shower. I’m glad there were no asthmatic kids in there. As I type this, my sense of smell is temporarily gone from the bleach fumes. They need to clean the carpet too, smells like funky corn chips.

11/01/18. This YMCA is clean, modern and the staff are friendly and helpful. There is plenty of parking, there is a pool, and it has both a male and female sauna and steam room.I would have given it five stars but I did not use the exercise equipment, so I cannot comment as to its quality.

We have been coming here since it opened. At the beginning it was a 5 star facility, now 1 star. There were excellent, licensed highly qualified trainers, I dont see any at that level right now. Except for some original staff, the employees are terrible. Young kids monitor the weight lifting area, not really monitor they chat with their friends, they are not old enough, mature enough or qualified to do the job. In fact I asked where stretching straps were and he pointed to a corner as he chewed his gum then went right on chatting. There were no stretching straps as they had in the beginning, just a frayed cloth strap.Yes they are under a renovation but this has given us a new perspective. Floors, most especially in the Locker rooms are very slippery. Three weeks ago they put non slip rubber down in the shower area, it is gone now. I brought a staff person into the Locker room to help another person, the staff person about 75yrs old, nice lady, shes been around a while slipped on a little water just outside the Locker room, I caught her arm, she was visibly shaken. At this renovation time, Its a mess. Equipment is old and torn. I have had knee surgery and need a place to stretch and do exercises there is nothing except by an emergency exit. They keep selling memberships and never increase the facility equipment, ever. The exercise equipment area needs a professional staff.Last, there is an age limit for children in either locker room, I was in last week, in my locker room there were two boys with mothers, 6 and 10 these mothers belong to a social group that are required to care for the children. I was told the family locker room is closed, not my problem. Bringing boys that age into a womans locker room is considered child abuse by law. I told the asst manager I would call child protective services next time. Do not join now, wait until the renovation is done then check the staff.

This gym is great for families. The group exercise schedule is diverse, and I have had many good instructors. The front office staff is friendly and helpful. If you are single, and looking to meet people to date, this is probably not the gym for you. But if you want to work out in a comfortable atmosphere, with people of varying fitness levels, and expose your children to coaches and staff who truly like working with kids, then this is your gym. I want to make special mention and thanks to Paul Raker membership Dir for welcoming me well at least on FB. Great gym

Update: free weights area got a big renovation. Plenty of racks now, but could still use more space in the dumbbells area as it is hard to find a spot there. One of the best gyms that I have been to with the renovation complete.Improper allocation of resources and space.First, the free weight area is much too small compared to the cardio/machines. Theres only two bench press stations and two squat racks, one of which has to share use as a deadlift station. To make matters worse, the squat racks are home to the only pull up bars in the facility, making a long wait for the squat racks. Instead of having 200+ unused machines, they should have two more squat racks that actually see use.Second, yes they just renovated, but it appears the free weight area got no attention. The dumbbells area smells like hamster feces. The dumbbell handles are so small I cannot fit my hands properly in them. The benches are so low it is uncomfortable to squat down that far with a heavy load. They are also wobbly and dangerous to lift on. The track is so small you can barely take a single stride without having to turn. This increases the likelihood of shin splints and other inbalances.+1 star for being half the price of lifetime and having a sauna.

Disgusting facilities. Unhelpful/ downright rude and unhygenic staff. Nearly every piece of equipment is broken or rickety. Staff are extremely rude and degrading to the older, senior members and I say this as a 26 year old man. The only reason it gets 2 stars is because of a couple stand-out staff members. I would strongly encourage you to look elsewhere for a place to work out, and let me know where you find it.

Looks like an older YMCA. Not to say its bad, but there is some thats left to be desired if youre looking for a good workout with all the equipment you may need. The LA fitnesses in northern Virginia area offer more in my opinion, but this suffices, considering its close to the metro station.

I will definitely enroll.Tony.

Good facility. Have Aetna insurance and got email about free Ymca membership for entire family. This is unbeatable value. Visited facility today. Its right of Fairfax county parkway next door to Dulles toll road. Parking is in the back for skimming pool. Entered through pool and filled couple of forms with membership desk and entire family was in the pool. There are couple of swim lines and section for little ones with shallow water. Break room is decent with bathroom and showers. Gym room has enough equipment for everyone. Overall certainly not the biggest and fanciest Ymca in DMV region (that title will go to Ymca Chevy Chase Bethesda in my opinion) but gets the jobs done with decent swimming pool and gym.

OK for adults. I do agree with a previous reviewer that the kids in the summer camp deserve better supervision: I thought my son was the only kid who soiled his pants in one of the outdoor camps last summer! Generally I think the reston YMCA summer camp is overcrowded. During the swim camp, my son hates the free swim time because he gets kicked by other kids all the time: thats how crowded it was.

I decided to resign from the Y a couple of month ago. I thought that if I stopped paying the monthly bill I would be canceled. Not so. I was billed and told that if I didnt by and sign paperwork they would turn my bill over to a collection agency. I made a special trip to Y and thought I had cleared everything up only to get another bill. Went by the Y again and was told by a service representative in a very haughty voice that if I didnt pay they would send my bill to a collection agency. I will probably come by and pay just to stop having to deal with the Y.

It is overpriced considering what it provides. Several years ago they renovated the place. The paint job from it is horrible. The pool has waytoo much clorine in it. My skin in a week simply hurt. After 3 months one has to purchase a new bathing suite because the color is burned out and elastic stretch - horrible. No amount of informing the manager will change it. The showers barley work putting out so little water. In the winter the hot water would not work. People would go home to shower after swimming. There was a fella at the check in desk that would yell at you as if you were in a military line up. Abusive power play. If you forgot your card he would not let you in despite the no of times you came in. The place had insecure low lifes that would try and bully you off a machine. It provides a roof over your head if it rains and a couple of dum bells for top price. A charity case

The experience at this YMCA was horrible. As a lifetime member of the YMCA with away benefits (for which I pay extra), this YMCA has been the worst I have experienced. I have used YMCAs across the country and have never encountered a staff member so incredibly rude and unwilling to assist me (Tara). Not only was she unable to assist me she continued to embarrass me in front of other members waiting in line. Her response was completely uncalled for, my situation was somewhat unique but still no way any member or guest should be treated. I was only allowed to access this YMCA after 15 minute argument with the front desk trying to convey my maiden name was different from married name. My membership card had my maiden name but even with 3 forms of picture ID and correct address matching within the system this was still an issue. While also being an away member I was still required to pay a 5 dollar fee to use the swimming pool. This review will be followed up to the Reston YMCA executive directors explaining that as YMCA member for over 25 years, i have never been so poorly treated while visiting any YMCA.
