Fascinating place. Lots of history. Well worth the 3 mile trip from Redding. Great old brick ruins. Felt like a ghost town. Interesting signs with great historical information. Sad to see all the scorched trees and land destroyed by the Carr Fire. Neat little old historical town though. Worth a visit.
Very interesting place to walk around. It definitely seems to be a good place to come for a photo opportunity. In fact there were a couple of photographers with clients taking pictures with the buildings.I really enjoy walking around places like this and reading all the plaques. Youll definitely get a lot of information walking around here. They have two museums, one on each side of the street. I didnt go into either of them, but I wish I did!Ill actually be coming back here soon with the friends so I can show her around and get some nice photos.
Just a little piece of history on the side of the road. Small park, but great views and awesome portrait photography location! The brick ruins would make a great backdrop. Doesn’t seem to be crowded usually
This place was an awesome find! The museum was filled with a wealth of information and was a glimpse into a time in history nearly forgotten by many. The relics were hauntingly beautiful. You can get a great sandwich at Shortys and enjoy a soda on the porch. The boardwalk, friendly people, and town overall is very hospitable.
Cool but Smokey due to fires. Is the forest there burned? Wiskeytown lake is cool too but half the trees look dead or burned.
Carr fire came near in 2018 but the old brock ruins still have stories to tell. Some things appear temporarily shut due to COVID era but walking about and reading some of the interpretive information is worth a stop
Shasta is a census-designated place in Shasta County, California, United States. Shasta sits at an elevation of 843 feet. The 2010 U.S. Census reported Shastas population was 1,771. Shasta State Historic Park located at Shasta is a ghost town and California State Historic Park.Brief visit late September 2017 after photographing a sunrise at Whiskeytown Lake. One can only muse on the shell of what once was a boom town during the gold rush days of California.
Loved to see the preservation of old buildings from gold history era .
Neat area with courthouse and gallows. Unfortunately restrooms are closed for COVID-19
Rode the bikes up middle creek and had dinner at the park. Nice evening with the wife!!
Really nice place for kids
Great historic experience. They have preserved an important part of history. You can explore the ruins.
Super fun day trip with the family
This was a nice quick side trip to get a bit more of the history of the area, I thought it was an interesting stop.
Really a pretty neat little historical park. Its small, wont take more than an hour to go through the park and the museum. But its a fun hour.
Interesting and educational.
Sad it had a lot of destruction due to the fires last year.
While on your way to Whiskeytown lake or to the coast from Redding you pass right by this historic park. STOP and enjoy the history of old Shasta an d it’s historic museum as well as a great place to have lunch it has some great outdoor displays of equipment used back in the old days there are also nearby graveyards and shops nearby.
Clean restrooms. Main museum is very good. They have an excellent art collection with several Maynard Dixon landscapes.
Comfy stroll at the park
Nice little ghost town with signs about everything there. Nice to drop by and check out the old wagons and machinery. The broken down buildings and history there are neat.
Super cool historic place to visit with tons a very interesting things to do. Full of Rich history and information about times past. the museum there is really neat and cool and a little bit creepy. I love the art that they have and just the entire setup. Have a little restaurant there as well but really makes you feel like you stepped back in time. Check it out if you get the chance.
This is a nice little stop and see some historical buildings and sit at a park and maybe have lunch. Its not as big as I thought it would be but still was a nice place to relax and see some history.
Very well kept and interesting, worth the stop.
Very cool place to walk and just collect your thoughts. Good info on the history as well
Love walking around the old buildings! The museum is great although last time we were there the people working there were not very knowledgeable or interactive.
A really nice place to learn more about gold rush history.
Nice open air park showing natural plants and animals. Beautiful with autumn color just beginning to show among the evergreens.
Good history and fun renovations of the store and the corthouse. Pitiful gift shop and most of the buildings can only be viewed from the outside.
This is a great little stop. Nice park clean bathrooms. Great place for pictures.
Great wild west place. Especially as it does not fit the usual wood fronts city pattern - houses are build of stone with iron shutters as people back then were smart about wild fires
Like looking back through time at a place in history.
Just great things to see and learn about the history of what once was. Doing some renovating on this visit, cant wait to see how things finish.
Pretty cool place lots to see in the little remembrance of the california gold rush
The history here is a big part of my family. I grew up at the church my Mother was raised here. Love it!!
Plan on taking twice as long as you had planned here. Lots to experience.
Good ol history that didnt get burned down fr the Carr fire
A great place the museum admission is only 3 dollars and the upkeep is top notch
Really enjoyed it gave us much better inside onto the state of California and its people.
Great day at Old Shasta. Kids made candles, had hot chocolate and cookies. The volunteers are very friendly and dressed up in period appropriate attire to boot.
Really neat place to stop and stretch your legs and learn some history.
Grew up here..great memories
This old town is amazing for kids and adults to learn
Redding is my home came to viste my boys seen the devastation of what the fire of its own control did and its hard so see what I know and grew up with and the history that is now gone very sad . But!! What is left is still wonderful and amazing to see .
Its a great place to take your kids I went with a good friend and we are both over 50 so its great for all ages to learn and enjoy our towns History
Very cool old buildings right on highway 299
It would look bold and wonderful for the town of Shasta along with the State park Cascade district to have more artifacts of the mining industry on static display along 299W. That would attract more people and bring vibrancy to the town.
So much to learn and see! Loved it
Great place to buy unique items from vendors!
We stopped by during an impromptu trip to the area. Unfortunately, some of the buildings werent open during our time there, but the ruins were interesting nonetheless. Its still worth the quick drive from Redding. So, check out the museum times and plan according.Youll have fun...and maybe learn a thing or two.
Really cool. Lots of history
Fun and rustic!
Great little stop off the 299
Loved this place! Great museum.
A Beautiful place to see and look back on Shasta history
I used to live there. Its a beautiful town. Caring people. A place to learn about history.
Trying to recreate the past. stay and observe this remnants of town and get the feeling
Neat seeing the old buildings and museums.
This place is real cool.
I live in French Gulch and love stopping in this park to rest and enjoy on my way home from Redding. I sometimes read my bible and devotion. It is a pretty place
This was an awesome Experience!! Went with family & it was a great time watching my 7yr old grand-daughter ask questions about the old days. A must see!!
Excellent example of Gold Rush history
Although Shasta State Historic Park is seemingly small (approximately one block in length) of mostly brick building ruins, visiting here is certainly worth a trip. It is located about six miles west of Redding California (before Whiskeytown NRA) and easy to find along Hwy 299. The accompanying museums are fantastic, especially wandering about the historic store that was sold to the California State Park system. It is still intact with its original merchandise. The on-site Ranger certainly helps visitors discover products on the shelves of this old mercantile. The park is a great place to spend an afternoon, learning about one of California’s great historic places
Lots of local history. Sorry for latest fire damage.
Great history
Nice spot to stop and stretch our legs, I love reading placards about historical sites so this was right up my alley! We did see very fresh bear scat on the trail above the brick ruins so be aware! Bathrooms were locked in the middle of the day.
Surprise stop by the road. Well done in restoration. Most people are unaware of the local historical significance.
Great place to go back in time to the 1800s. Museum only opens from Thursday - Sunday but you can still see the old town buildings if you go any other day.
WORTH A STOP, A SEMI-GHOST TOWN. ONCE THE MAIN GOLD-SUPPLY-STAGE CENTER OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. YOU CAN BIKE FROM HERE DOWN THE MIDDLE CREEK TRAIL TO THE SACRAMENTO RIVER TRAIL. ONE WAY 3.5 MILES-ROUND TRIP 7 MILES.
Pretty cool. Poison oak everywhere.
Beautiful old Shasta, be a tourist walk the old streets see the museum even check out where they used to hang people and lock people up. Some say its haunted too. Often times people dressed In period clothing are said to be seen wondering the area. Creepy.
Beautiful place to visit. The ruins are amazing and the museum is wonderful for only $3.00 Much more the I expected.
Its a cool old place
This place is fun. Lots of old building and history. Free to visit. Great for family photos, too.
Had a blast going with my husband to pioneer days! They really recreate the era and show what a town in the early century.
Really interesting History, and beautiful.
Old ghost town, worth the stop!!
A wonderful place to take visitors for a history lesson of our community!
Still a beautiful setting, sadly the fire did a lot of damage to the mountainside
Soooo interesting...
Nice town, store and small place to eat.
This is a nice spot to stop and take in some history.
Not much of a park really, just a few old buildings alongside the main road.
Licata Catering... Love Being there Serving Great Food.....
It got all burned up around it so sad
Nice place.
Great for history lovers. Good historical museum. You can learn a lot.
Excellent museum and definitely worth the $3.00 per person.
This is not the right location! this park is also called the courthouse museum and that location on Google maps is correct but this is not the location of the park and this location should be removed to prevent confusion.
Great state park with fabulous old buildings and ruins. Californias Gold was filmed here.
My family really enjoyed learning about how Shasta was such an important part of Northern California history. I didnt realize it was basically the most important city until the railroad bypassed Shasta in favor of Redding.
Interesting historic town. Take a couple of hours to explore
Go see Dan Ides blacksmith shop the first and third Saturday of every month. Amazing guy!
Wonderful for all ages!
Awesome thanks. Good people .
Well cared for super nice
Wonderful history
Old historic ruins from gold rush era commercial properties.
