Site of a hostel built in 1867 along the Santa Fe Trail to accommodate stage coach and wagon travelers. The Santa Fe Trail linked Independence Missouri with Santa Fe New Mexico. It connected with the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a trade route between Mexico City and San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico. Clifton house grew from this traffic into a settlement, which included a trading post, blacksmith shop, and post office. For a short time it was the headquarters of the English company that bought the Maxwell Land Grant. The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad was opened two miles north in 1879, quickly closing down stage travel on the Santa Fe Trail. Closure of the Clifton House soon followed and it was destroyed by arson in 1885.
