I had such a great and educational experience at this Historical site! Mr. Pope was ahead of his time. So many things to learn about the property.
Very interesting part of Raleigh & African-American history! Admission is free, but please consider dropping some money into the donation box.Dr. Pope was born to free parents. He graduated from Shaw University, & in 1885 he became the first African-American doctor in NC. He went on to found a medical society & health insurance company, & he had this gorgeous house built on Wilmington Street in 1901. He was a truly exceptional person; Im surprised so many Raleigh residents seem to know little about him.
This is a wonderful Museum. Been trying to get here for a year and finally visited and it was worth the wait. Only open on Saturdays for tours for a few hours but I highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed my visit. I think theyre only open on Saturday so check the schedule before you go. The tour guides were super. the free tour takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Be sure to stop by here as its walking distance to most of the other attractions downtown.
A very interesting place to go and receive some history.
An amazing slice of history amongst corporate buildings.
I enjoyed the tour and appreciated learning the history of the family.
Amazing piece of history, African American history about a black prominent doctor. .
Nice museum with lots of interesting historical items.
Took a walking tour yesterday starting at Pope House. So much to learn about local history! Our tour guide, Josh, was extremely knowledgeable and detailed about the area. Wish there was a longer walk as the weather was perfect for it.
Very important piece of History, a little sad that its the only Museum of its kind in the state!
A historical African American Doctors house in downtown Raleigh..He paid what i considered a small amount for this land to build on.considering he was black in the 1900s
Nice place to visit
