A stunning place! Ultramodern architecture blends with unobtrusive, sophisticated landscaping. The whole experience is rather zen inducing. It’s a pleasure to walk the grounds and discover different vantage points and outdoor sculpture. The outdoor cafe is pleasant. During Covid times, passes are only released on the first of each month and go quickly.

Amazing campus! Its massive, modern, clever and clean. Simply an absolute treat for the DC area.Sprawling outdoor and indoor locale. The exhibits range from very modern to semi abstract to pop. If youre not into the art, the grounds will wow.Order online in advance!

This place is straight out of a Miyazaki movie!! It’s so beautiful and serene and a nice escape from the city. So many different parts to explore. I love the incorporation of art, nature and architecture. I do appreciate their mask policy although should be more heavily enforced. But a great place to visit!!

I’ve been wanting to visit Glenstone for over 5 years. Tickets are hard to come by because they are free and limited. My recent visit did not disappoint. Even with the main gallery being closed, the grounds at Glenstone and the Pavilion where just what I needed for my first visit. I’m already making plans to return. Unfortunately, Glenstone can’t fully be described. It’s something you must experience for yourself.

Underrated great getaway for a date :). We went on a snowy day and it was very calming and quiet. Loved how different and unknown this place is. Cant say anything wrong about it, its FREE! :)

Stunning. Art is great, if sparse. But the combination of art and great architecture and landscape is a unique experience. COVID safe, only small groups plus a lot of art is out doors. Get on their mailing list to get notified when the next batch of reservations happens. It gets book in 5-10 min so be ready on the dot.

Due to the pandemic we only visited the grounds but the pavilions are opening soon. Incredibly beautiful setting. The Serra sculpture that you can walk through just blew my mind. Its not crowded because reservations are required. A wonderful place to visit.

My favorite place in MD. Most peaceful place you can be, if you want to be surrounded by Art, Architecture, and Nature. I always enjoy coming here. Reservations are needed.

Great blend of museum and nature. Walk around and see sculptures and admire art and sculpture inside the pavilions. The buildings themselves are pieces of art and help to accent to art. Modern art fut there so well. I was amazed at each room I went into. Staff is helpful and kind as well.

Bring a hat and walking shoes to this private and modern art gallery and garden. Parking is easy on an unpaved lot; you will be directed where to go by an attendant. After checking in at the Arrivals area (check out the terrific book store) proceed on your tour. Great garden inspiration here, good to visit at different times of year to see the grounds change. Art experience is world class and unexpected in Maryland horse country. Because the guest flow is a slow throttle, no rush of crowds or cranky lines of people or strollers. A fine experience.

An amazing place! The outdoor Forest sound exhibit was the best. The boardwalk also great. Many other spectacular exhibits. Seemed a bit sparse and lots of walking, and too much open space needing carbon sequestrating, wildlife loving, and cooler trees. The indoor exhibits were closed due to the pandemic but not their fault. Staff very nice and professional.

Reservations required for this museum situated in the Maryland suburbs accessible by bus or car. Wear comfy shoes. Enjoy the cafe or patio cafe to rest. Simultaneously calming as well as stimulating. For modern art, architecture, nature lovers a real treat. Interior galleries and exterior sculptural installations. Best way to stop developers with art!!!

Glenstone is a unique experience of sensory art. The staff are extremely helpful and kind, when I asked questions they engaged in interesting conversations about the works of art and the intent of the artists. One tip: dont miss out on the 3 little huts further from the pavilion, fascinating pieces await.

It is not what you think of when the word museum is stated. It is a different experience. Not for everyone but a nice experience all the same. The staff are some of the friendliest people I have ever encountered at a museum. It will be a while before we think of going again but it was a very nice Sunday afternoon.

At first glance - Beautiful, open, natural - but after immersing yourself there you feel something is not quite right: feelings of control, oppression, eeriness, and manipulation invade your senses amidst the juxtaposition of a beautiful expansive campus. You will leave feeling deeply unsettled.

Possibly the most serene place on earth. If you arent blown away by the stunning architecture, you will be by the thoughtfully curated collection. It The museum boasts high profile artists including Alexander Calder, Basquiat, and Rothko. Its hard to image this is a private collection!We are truly lucky to have such an museum for free! Tickets become available on their website on the first of every month for the following month. They are almost always gone within a few minutes, so set a calendar reminder and be near your computer.The cafe is delicious and a nice place to take a break. This museum requires a lot of walking, so they have two cafes perfectly placed to rest and recharge is your continue to venture through the gorgeous grounds.

One of the most breathtaking museums I’ve been to in my life. Not only the architecture, but the art collection is amazing as well. Food in the cafeterias is local made and great. Good good place to go and spend the day. (You will need an entire day to go there and visit it entirely)

I like the idea of limiting the number of visitors in order to better the quality of the experience but having to reserve tickets 3-4 months in advance is a bit excessive.As for the collection - I liked the outdoor part though its pretty sparse. The indoor part is not exactly my cup of tea but, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, everyone has to decide for themselves.I liked the architecture of the pavilions. Very spacious, modern, concrete structures. There is also an inner courtyard water garden which is a nice, kind of meditative space. One more thing I liked were the community tables in the restaurant. What a great idea to encourage conversations between strangers.

Really beautiful and special place. Be sure to wear walking shoes and give yourself plenty of time. The art is spaced thoughtfully and they have an impressive collection.The docents are friendly and well prepared. The cafe had a limited menu, but good food. We were there 3 hours and it wasnt nearly enough time, especially to walk the grounds.

A most enchanting museum. Set in a magical location, the museum is incorporated into the land, with gorgeous vistas of grasslands casually splattered with wild flowers, tranquil water bodies and majestic trees. The geometric lily pond within the museum feels like walking into Monets painting. To see art in such conditions was a spiritual experience. They have a collection of great 20th century modern/post-modern art. Currently showing Louise Bourgeois, whose statement: I bear the map of the world on my skin, but I cant locate myself---moved me immensely.

A museum worth visiting based on the architecture and landscaping alone. The exhibits are well thought out: together they make a cohesive and immersive experience. There are also walking trails, outdoor exhibits, and a coffee shop. You do have to get your tickets online in advance -- theyre free but they go quickly.

What a neat place to go to! Its a mixture of an arboretum and a museum all in one. It is not open every single day so keep that in mind and be sure you call before you go. Photography cannot be taken inside of the museum but youre welcome to photograph the grounds and the sculptures outdoors. This is the perfect mix of someone who is a nature enthusiasts and also appreciates modern art.

The Glenstone Museum is a hidden gem in Potomac Maryland. Spend the day walking the trails finding sculptures, grabbing lunch at the Cafe, and viewing the modern works located in the gallery. I loved the interaction with the docents! They welcome any questions or just a conversation about the arts.

The designers/creators of the Glenstone are to be congratulated. The landscaping, concept and collections are memorable, delightful and evolving. I hope to visit Glenstone whenever I am in the area. If you want to visit, reservations for parking are, I believe, necessary.

Fantastic museum. It’s worthy visiting during the week or on less crowded days, but even in the weekend it’s a rare thing to visit a museum where there are few other people present. It gives you a chance to linger and interact with the art in a way that would be impossible at an urban museum. Huge indoor spaces and dramatic outdoor landscapes. Just make sure to bring your walking shoes and try to come on a worm day!

This is one of the best museums Ive been too. Its very exclusive and pretty hard to get tickets for because you have to get tickets 3 months in advanced and they only release tickets on the first of the month. What I loved most about this museum is the architecture. Its incredible how its built on the water, so much glass and natural lighting. The way that they stagger people into the museum makes it feel like youre alone walking through this big building observing art. Its hands down my favorite museum in the area.

Im a son went visit the museum. We were both delighted and educated from our visit. I had the opportunity to share with him some of my experiences based on the exhibits and he was able to give his perspective based on his experiences. Too much to see in a single visit but he and I plan to return. Ive attached a postcard of one ofhe exhibits that we both found interesting.

Superb modern art museum and outdoor sculpture park. The experience of visiting this museum is enhanced greatly by the friendly guides they have stationed throughout the exhibits. They are extremely knowledgeable and willing to engage with visitors to discuss the art works.

Beautiful location with interesting art

The grounds and architecture are the draw here. They really put time and thought into the environs. I have been looking at art most of my life and this might have been the most pretentious experience Ive had doing it. There is a great deal of instruction that I would wager next to no one making the trip there needs. The staff are all forced to wear middle value grey wardrobe head to toe so that they will blend in with the walls. Labels for art are poorly placed and arranged. The collection itself is safe. Nothing is challenging. It is the type of work a billionaire buys because they are known names not because there is a passion for the work. The outdoor sculptures largely work well with the landscape. The only works inside that did anything for me were those of Kerry James Marshall. I would recommend going on a nice day but since you have to make reservations well in advance, it would be hard to anticipate the weather.

Glenstone is absolutely worth the wait! This museum is well designed and full of thought-provoking shoes. Many pieces are outdoors and the trails are about a mile long, so wear comfy shoes!

Glenstone Museum is a treasure often missed in the area. Tickets are free, and go quickly. The integration of landscape, architecture and modern art is overwhelming, and executed flawlessly. There is more than one days worth of exploration here, and I will be back.

Undoubtedly one of the regions most stunning and significant art museums. It may be difficult to get reservations, but the wait is worth it. The architecture of the buildings alone is enough to satisfy the art lover. Particularly stunning are the grounds, immaculately kept and planned down to the location of each tree.The exhibitions are decidedly modern with a nice mix of classic modern (Pollock, Caulder) and a variety of new artists. Some of my favorites are the massive installation pieces. Some of these pieces are so otherworldly as to bring one into a divine place of thinking and reflection.We were fortunate to visit with snow on the ground which added to the otherworldly feel. With that said, there are also cozy touches such as a cafe and plenty of sitting areas with amazing views.Dont miss the forest behind the patio with music playing in the distance.I feel blessed to have Glenstone literally in my backyard.

This museum is stunning. Aside from the actual art, the building and landscaping is worth 1/2 day excursion.The yard ranges from fantastic to curiously interesting.I was most struck by the attention to detail in the architecture. They have slabs of stone that make up the entire ceiling of many parts of the structure. I spent half my time looking up trying to figure out how they did it.every detail of the architecture is thoroughly considered. They custom made fire alarm devices, extinguisher enclosures, store fixtures so that everything fits perfectly together.This will become a regular place for us to go to the museum or just to sit and read.

Marvelous setting and fabulous art collection this is a must see to add to your list of destinations in the nation’s capital. They have incorporated the landscape into the overall design of the galleries in ways that will surprise and delight you.

Pretty much the greatest experience Ive ever had for free. Glenstone is an indescribably beautiful and evocative experience. If youre looking for a fun trip to plan, an impressive date idea or the best way to spend a quiet day alone Glenstone is it. To the employees, its not just about the art but about how you EXPERIENCE it. Every inch of the property is designed from the moment you walk in to fascilitate your own preferred mode of interaction with the exhibits. The staff are knowledgable, friendly and happy to be there. Dont think about it JUST GO.

Beautiful museum even in January. Will be back at different time of year. Loved the outdoors, but did not appreciate most of the modern art itself in the main pavilion. I loved the architecture, landscape, sound installations. I am not a fan of random paint droppings on canvas, so my rating here is mostly for museum buildings, etc.

Gorgeous 300 acres of prairie, woodland, walking trails, art installations and art gallery.

Modern art from 60s to today. Get your good walking shoes, the area is big and there is a hike to see the artwork. It is handicap friendly but some trails are not paved. Went with my mother who could not walk very well. At check in, they explain the grounds thoroughly and have ppl throughout that will answer questions. They will drive you in their 5 person cart to the Pavilion and Gallery. Walking around the grounds, you will see sculptures. There is a sculpture that is better to see in spring/summer.

Hands down one of my favorite museums in the DC area. I love the analog experience of the museum, though I do think they can improve their accessibility. The woodland trail is gorgeous but is a bit long and has gravel path which might not be walkable for some people. Definitely wear walking shoes. Its unfortunate that you need a reservation to come in, but I found out that you can get in without a reservation if you ride the montgomery county RideOn bus to get there. Its also interesting that the museum is essentially a billionares art collection... think of that as you will.

Every detail is curated to optimize the visitors experience. Excellent staff, lovely setting, interesting conversations. Its a wonderful treat.

I am not usually a fan of modern art, but I was drawn in and enjoyed the art at GlenStone. I was disappointed by the prohibition of non-flash photographs of the art. I enjoy sharing photos of art with friends and family. We went during a winter day, and I was surprised by the length of the walk outdoors from the entrance to the museum which is too far for many elderly who would enjoy visiting the museum. The upside is if your camera is heavy you will not need to carry it on the long walk to the museum.

Mix of architecture, beautiful landscaping and amazing artworks. Loved the interactive installations and walking a path through nature to see them. Food at the Cafe and Patio healthy and delicious. A great way to spend the day.

We only saw the outdoor space because the indoor galleries were closed but they were magical. Ill definitely be coming back once the galleries open up again.

The drop had been planned for months.It had to be with Glenstone’s notorious 30 day advance reservation window. But now we were ready. Thursday, 2:00 pm, between the Jasper Johns and the Basquiat, the briefcase of uranium was to be left on the floor.In the adjoining art space, beneath the untitled artwork featuring a used tampon stapled to a dartboard, the case of money was to be left.It was perfect really. Located in the heart of Potomac, miles from any Geiger counters, private guards, no pictures allowed and an escape route to the river should the situation turn deadly.I spot my counterpart standing in front of the large Rothko. She is clad entirely in grey. Grey poncho, leggings, and boots. A mistake. All the docents here wear grey head to toe. She will undoubtedly be pestered by the hoi polloi trying to improve themselves by propinquiting themselves with the modern masters.I walk over to the Basquiat and wait. I hear the unmistakable noise of a heavy case being set down. I follow suit and walk around the corner to receive my lucre. As I reach down to pick up the case, a docent comes up to me and holds my arm. “No touching the art work, sir.”“But ..this is my case...”“No touching the art please sir.”I look up to see multiple docents descending on our location.In between them, walking away undeterred, I see my counterpart, completely camouflaged by her ersatz docent wear. She is listing to her left due the weight of her cache. She strides confidently past the Mario Metz neon signs, her boots heavy on the wooden floor. She is gone.I reach for my case once more.“Sir we are going to have to ask you to leave.” There are many of them now. One has bulge under his grey fringed serape that is distinctly gun like.I shall have to return tonight.Ample parking. Free soup til 2:00pm. Highly recommend.

The intimacy of this museum... it seems like every aspect and perspective has been carefully curated. The pastoral setting allows the art and the buildings to breathe.

A fabulous find in suburban Maryland. The art can be challenging to appreciate, but the setting is beautiful. Its wonderful that art patrons are willing to share their treasures with the public like this. Tickets are difficult to score, but are free and surely worth it.

I dont have a car so this place is a bit of a haul to get to. On my first visit -- and heres a tip -- I metro-ed out to Rockville and took the 301 Ride On bus to the museum. Not only is the bus free (as of this review), but you are also guaranteed entry without reservations. Second visit my friend drove us out... this, of course, was much faster.What I like most about Glenstone is that the art is displayed in what I believe to be exactly how the artists would want their works displayed; in settings that are so perfect that the art becomes part of the natural environment... outside and inside the galleries. Its truly amazing.Make sure to get the times for the openings of the Heizer sculpture and the Goldsworthy houses when you enter. The Goldsworthy houses are accessible from the pavilion. Meet the guide there, you will walk down together.There are attendants throughout the galleries. Ask them questions, they are very knowledgeable. Im not the most talkative person but found that just making a quick comment about an installation is enough for a staff member to give great insight on the artist.First visit, we easily spent half the day there. Wound up so hungry we had to eat at the cafe. This was fortuitous as the lentil burger was phenomenal.

Glenstone was a total immersion into things aesthetic. The natural environment, the architecture, and the unusual creations all came together to encourage a rethinking of what constitutes art. It was a very moving experience.

Wow, I didnt know what to expect before visiting but Glenstone is so much better than anything I would have imagined. The architecture, art works, and atmosphere are one of a kind. Highly recommend and I will be back over and over.

Modern art isnt really my cup of tea most of the time. I cant say that I really understand all the art here, but what I can say is that it is clear that a great deal of time and care has been put into featuring the artwork on display.

Outstanding museum mixing art and nature in the best way possible

Very unique museum. Worth it to see the architecture and landscape at any time of the year. We ate in the cafe but the food was not very good. The art was interesting and well displayed.

Art + Nature = Extraordinary Experience

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but the museum is a bit bleak. The art is thrown at you with no information or context, as if some piece of wood or a rainbow canvas was an example of perfection. The grey suited staff hover like government minders, posted at every doorway. The buildings look like a genetic modification laboratory from a sci fi movie. As a critique of this highly curated place, there is no room for reflection. It is more like a theme park than a museum - its a place for experiencing rather than for learning.That said, the museum is free and features beautifully landscaped grounds. As for the art, the courtyard pond and outdoor piece title Collapse are personal highlights. Someone put a fortune into it, as the extremely expensive art everywhere proves (why do people think expensive art is good?), and the result shows a heavy hand at work.

Glenstone is a architects dream house. Its a beautiful museum with wonderful exhibits by Jeff Koons and Roni Horn just to name a few.

When our condo posted the trip to Glenstone, 35 people signed up. After learning of the many restrictions to entrance, 8 people were forced to cancel. These are people who routinely visit other museums in the area. Glenstone is a wonderful place to visit with a nice cafe on the grounds. Because if its status as a non-profit with a tax exemption, they should make Glenstone accessible to more people.

One of the most incredible art exhibitions I have ever seen. Some truly incredible stuff, both inside and out. An immersive experience. And, best of all, free!

Wonderful integration of modern art, architecture and extensive beautiful grounds our third trip each time in a different season which makes each visit unique. Wonderful docents whose knowledge of the art and artists make the visit extraordinary.

This place needs to be seen more than once. This place itself is a work of art. The varied contents of the galleries may change, and the place itself will continue to be an example of what can be done. It is a testament to many things, and must be experienced.

Phenomenal! A great use of half a day. Get your (free!) tickets in advance online and wear comfortable shoes. The outdoor experience - with sculpture and trails around the grounds - is almost as good as the indoor museum.

A truly unique and immersive experience. Save at least three hours for your visit if you want to enjoy both the indoor exhibitions as well as the other pieces and landscape. Also, there is good food on site, as well.

Im not an art critic, but I have to say this was a great place to visit. The architecture is stunning and the art is pretty cool too . Comfortable shoes are a must so you can walk to all the locations throughout the sprawling and meticulously maintained estate. The map was a bit hard to follow, but some jewels were found along the unpaved trails... I particularly enjoyed the outside emersive audio experience. Im not going to tell you where...you will have to find it yourself! Go ahead and reserve your place in line for tickets. The two months we waited was worth it and reminds me of my favorite part of the Glennstone experience... A total lack of crowds! It was great being able to take our time without fighting through crowds. Limiting the numbers of visitors per day definitely makes the experience better. Enjoy!

For art lovers I highly recommend a visit to Glestone. Outside there are numerous walking trails leading to hugh sculptures and secluded benches in the woods. Inside the buildings, which are works of art themselves, are art exhibits that soeak to your imagination and which you will remember for a long time. Lastly I must compliment the staff which are numerous and very interested in interacting with the visitors and helpful in any way.

Fascinating art gallery outside the Smithsonian institute, but still top notch. Exhibitions are a bit more cutting edge as a result. Hidden gem in the Potomac McMansion hellscape. Some walking required to get between installations but well kept grounds, professional and friendly staff.

Art should be accessible, not impossible without a reservation. Instead of hiring two guys to stand in the driveway to turn people away with a smile, they should finance some valet parking staff to double park people or run a golf cart shuttle from a nearby lot.This is not the Louvre were even there, crowds may still enjoy rare works or art.

How anyone could find this museum anything less than great is beyond me. The architecture and landscaping is stunning, its well organized and the staff is engaging and helpfull. Even the food you can buy there is part of the immersive experience.There are only couple of things that one is asked not to do and that includes not bringing small kids, coming on time and not taking any photos in the buildings. I dont think thats to much to ask. After all, its a privately owned museum.
