What an intimate experience this venue provides! Im always blown away by the shows Theatre Vertigo puts on in this space and the way the space can change for whatever you need it to be. Feels very raw and exciting.
This tiny intimate theater is the bedrock of so much self produced and fringe theater. It is a challenging space to perform in but its always worth checking out whats going on inside. You may see some weird, crazy things, but you will never be bored.
Great space for edgy new work by talented actors.
I had a very good time here. Small but intament. Variety of seat styles. Good selection of food and drinks. Street parking readily available.
The joyful anticipation of enjoying a Jose Rivera play was dashed by the Shoebox theaters matter of fact indifference towards making their venue ADA compliant.Although Riveras Marisol continues to be regarded as a thought provoking and important piece of contemporary theater, it will performed by some of Portlands bright new talent in a space thats not meant for a specific segment of our citys population.Thats because the management at The Shoebox appears to have resigned itself to doing little more than hanging a sign that reads Able Bodied Only.
Its a delightful performing space. I have seen numerous productions there. However if THE REFORMERS every perform there, please dont go. Its probably a company pretending to be THE REFORMERS and likely highly unwatchable.
Nice tiny black box theater for locally written and produced shows.
First impression: Not accessible. Four steps up to a porch. Once inside, the building is nice. It is more than a little unfortunate that the play is far more accessible than the building it’s in.Side note: I hear that this is the first time they’ve been in this building.Update: They do have a portable ramp that they put over the steps. So..an improvement, but it makes for a very steep ramp. Be very. careful. The Shoebox is a perfectly charming little space. Yes, there is only one bathroom, as another reviewer mentioned, so be prepared.
A brilliant use of space and energy. Delightful.
Tiny but charming venue for strong local theater productions.
A small but intimate venue. A fun place to watch a show as you are right in the action.
Small intimate stage
Really unfortunate venue given what I could see of the performance was entertaining. The seating will not allow anyone to see action taking place on or close to the floor. Unlike other small venues, the seating is not staggered or graduated so anyone in the second or third row will have to crane his or her neck to see the performance. And floor work is a complete zero. What topped it off for me is that the front seats were reserved (it was billed as general admission) and a man well over 6 feet was directly in front of me -- no matter how much I shifted in my seat, I missed most of the performance. $15.00 to look at the back of someones head is not my idea of entertaining. Finally, be forewarned that you are entering Portlands skid row when walking to this venue so if you are ill prepared to deal with homelessness or dodging vomit in the middle of the sidewalk, this theater is not for you.
Small but perfectly formed. Have seen a few shows here over the years, and they have all managed to use this tiny space to great effect. Be aware: only one bathroom.
Very fun and cozy spot. Great theatre
I didnt know such small and intimate places existed around Portland for live theater! Straight in your face acting!
Intimate theatre, youre feel like youre right on top of the actors. Only 1 bathroom so come prepared.
Fun intimate venue for plays. The air-conditioning needed work, not enough airflow, too hot.
Tiny theatre. Big fun.
Very small and very intimate theater. Some of the best local theater in Portland.
Too warm, uncomfortable seats, too small.
Theatre Vertigo lives here BABY!
