The Museum is kind of old and simple, however you must take into consideration that in an archaeological field, Clovis is considered as the birthplace of ancient humanity with artifacts that date as much as 12.000 years back. It is one of Americas most important archaeological sites due to the historic importance.
This is a little wonderful museum on the College campus that is great for anyone interested in the Clovis people or archeology. It is free and very informative.
Small museum. We were the only patrons when we visited. Many small exhibits and most interactive. More could be on the Black Water Draw. But, they had apparently moved the museum fairly recently. Also, there were many exhibits under development. The, I believe, museum director whose office is there was enthusiastic to answer questions, and she was very knowledgeable and helpful. Signage within the building that directs one to the museum could be more obvious and at all entrances. We failed to make the first turn and wandered a bit before finding the museum.
Nice Museum but was somewhat disappointed. The old museum told the story of Clovis Site and its importance in anthropology. This Museum is jumbled and really with no theme. TheMiles Anthropology collection is neat but really doesnt fit with a museum dedicated to the Clovis Site. Overall disappointed.
Good for what it is, but at a university with art, metal shops and students that need real world experience...a little imagination could see the museum so much more
The Blackwater Draw Museum is best viewed together with the Blackwater site itself. The draw museum itself piggybacked onto the Miles collection of artifacts which for the most part are of more recent Native American origin. There are areas to engage children and numerous informative plaques along the walls for the inquisitive adult as well. The true wealth of the experience (besides the unbelievable experience of the site itself)is in the archeology students who man the desk at the museum and are easily engaged to answer your questions as they pertain to their field of interest and Clovis culture generally.Due in no small part to the Curator of the Museum, who genuinely enjoys exposing others to this time and moment when early human hunters engaged Mammoth and Bison Antigua as well as other megafauna of the Pleistocene.
At ENMU for family weekend. Its a nice little museum. Good for kids.
I am interested in anthropology so this museum was extremely exciting to me. It is small and only houses a fraction of the total artifacts found, but does a great job of giving a lot of interesting facts about the layered discoveries at Blackwater Draw over nearly a century. I had many questions that were encouraged and answered by the friendly staff. I coupled this side trip with a camping stay at the nearby Oasis Park which made for an excellent trip.
Good place to learn about the Clovis People. Some fun hands-on activities for kids that are tangentially related to the topic. Note: cash only, dont believe the signs.
Very cool place. I recommend checking it out.
An enjoyable place to visit. This museum covers the history and science of the Blackwater Draw site and how its discovery literally rewrote the story of North America. It is one large gallery room that manages to cover a lot of very complicated information. The fee is small, so why not pay a few dollars and take in the exhibits. There were still some exhibits under constuction when i visited, but the bulk are well done and complete. One thing that stood out here is new research is featured in some of the text. I appreciated this and was pleased to see the Museum showing their work when it comes to updating old field research. The fee covers a visit to the actual site, but i did not have to time to go.
Archeological fossils, facts, and displays. Sloth skull as big as a modern day bears skull, Mammoth and mastadon molars bigger than a softball, and more.
Pretty cool
