Absolutely one of the coolest old venues around. Its an absolute shame that this spot is dead until someone decides to buy it and revive it, which is a big if. Ive been to many shows here and every single one rocked.. Rip The Rex

This venue is really open for how small it looks outside. Parking is definitely something you have to think about before. We sat out here for hours for the PUP concert and the staff were totally cool with it. Barricade hurt my ribs but that’s the type of concert PUP is. Overall nice venue!

To be fair, I was a performer here, not just a patron so my review is from a different perspective. But I have to say the Rex is very cool. I love these old time performance spaces. The lobby is cool, there are at least two bars (with friendly bartenders). The performers green rooms are comfortable and decorated with fun art. There is a balcony with a great view of the stage. There is nothing modern about this place, which is what I think makes it charming. And there is a super cool clothing store (Culture Shop) next door. Only drawback is parking is really hard to find in this neighborhood. But its such a cool neighborhood, thats a minor detail. I love this part of Pittsburgh!

Great, relatively small theater. We saw Cody Ko and Noel Miller and it was the perfect size for a comedy show like them. Just a little strange that they dont have chairs, standing for three hours in one spot gets a bit tiring.

I went to see I Dont Know How But They Found Me a few days ago. They were amazing live! I did have one issue, though... The staff was extremely rude. After the show, they set up a barricade in front of the stage. Anyone that came NEAR it got screamed at. There was no purpose for the barricade either, no one was even trying to go on/near the stage in the first place. I have been to tons of concerts, and not one other place did that. Not one.I was even told that someone went near the barricade and they got shoved away by the guard. They werent even that close to it either.Near the end of the show, I was waiting for the singer (a few other people were, too) and then the staff came out and yelled at us to go to a different bar. Not all of us were 21 and they shouldnt have said that.Dallon and Ryan performed spectacularly, but the staff should probably work on their social skills! :/

A had a VIP package for a show I saw here. Everything went super smoothly and it was a great experience! The staff was friendly and efficient, and it was a great night. Toward the end of the show, I was up front and got too overheated, from the sheer number of people in one space all dancing etc, and had to go to the back and sit down on the floor. As I was trying to cool down, a nice woman came over and handed me a bottle of water. Thankyou, water angel, I needed that. All around good experience with good people. Would return!

First off, Ive been Taping shows at hundreds of different music venues across the USA, and the Rex Theater is my absolute favorite smaller indoor venue, other than Phish playing at the Hampton Coliseum! The staff is very friendly and top notch, and the manager Ben Penigar is the MAN and brings the best music to Pittsburgh. Before he got involved in the Pittsburgh music scene, there wasnt nearly as much good music. And when Ben took over the Rex Theater and the Thunderbird Cafe, he updated the sound system at both venues to my knowledge, and the Rex Theater is one of the best sounding smaller venues. Period. Oh and the Rex Theater and Thunderbird Cafe are both VERY Taper friendly, so if you have some Recording gear, stop on by and get there early enough to get a good spot and talk to the staff!Overall I HIGHLY recommend going to the Rex Theater for ANY shows you might like, and trust me, youll have a great time. Like I said, easily one of my top favorite venues EVER, and thats a bold statement from me!

This is a pretty good venue to catch a show. The sound is alright, and the place typically pulls in some good bands. What sets this place apart for me is the staff. The people who work here are awesome. If a show is coming here you definitely dont want to miss out on it.

Saw Gary Gulman stand-up here. The show was great; the space - terrible. The hall looks in dire need of renovation. Old and beat-up. Was not warm enough on a cold night - people were sitting around in their winter coats. They jammed maximum number of rows of flimsy folding chairs together with leg room that would make an airline proud. A dismal and ugly space. Avoid if possible.

Great venue for smaller Pittsburgh shows. They have reasonable ticket and drink prices. The sound is almost always on point, great visuals in small space. Staff is always friendly and cool. I have been going to shows for 7 years in Pittsburgh and a lot of the best shows I have seen in this city have been at the red. The only club Ive been to where security is an utter joke. There is no metal detectors, no guard to pat down or even wand you.A woman started a fight during the Silverstein show twice tonight and rather than escorting both parties out security takes out the people who were picked on. When we tried to tell security (some guy wearing a skull beanie) that they had the wrong woman, seeing as the woman who was starting fights had been hitting me the entire show, he told us that If you dont like it then you can get the f*** out. Which we proceeded to do about halfway through the set.On our way out we were stopped by the doors by another security asking what was wrong, when we told him what happened he told us theyre doing their best and nothing else can be done. This was the first and definite last time we will give this establishment any of our money. As someone who goes to around 20+ shows a year, this is a real disappointment that someplace close is so awful.
