This is a great museum to learn about Ohio history and the history of the canal system. On the weekend you can ride in their very own canal boat that is a replica of the ones that used to float up and down the Ohio Erie Canal. Summer kitchen and the house are great to visit as well. The volunteers In The Summer Kitchen are the best. Highly recommended
This is a real treasure of a historic site. There is the museum with many very nice displays that tell the story of the Johnson family and farm, the Native Americans of the area, and the Miami and Erie Canal. Outside, you will find the nicely displayed farm house, the downstairs kitchen, the summer kitchen, the spring house and display on making thread, spinning, and weaving, and the barn. The staff and volunteers are well informed and leave no question unanswered. A canal boat ride is part of the package, and you will ride in a boat pulled by a team of mules. The ride is along a watered section of the Miami and Erie Canal. It lasts about an hour. Once you are done here, and if you enjoy canal history, be sure to travel north a couple miles to see the Lockington Flight of locks.
Very well kept early Ohio (gentleman farmer) farm and Indian station. Home is under renovation but docents in spinning courtyard and the office (Johnsons room where Indian and trading negotions occurred) were very knowledgeable about the frontier. Easy to reconstruct the ever busy life in the early 1800s.
Great historical farm with a museum and volunteers that tell you about farm life of the 1800s. Took the mule drawn boat ride, explored the house and spring house - great learning experience for kids and adults. Beautiful landscape and well preserved Indian culture from years ago.
What an incredible piece of living history for all ages to enjoy. Theres a small museum telling the history of the farm and Native Americans that called this area home. Some beautifully decorated Native American pieces of their and other tribes culture. The Farm house is open during operating hours and tours are provided of it and the large spring house. They provide actual canal boat rides demonstrating the canal operation with mules. You can hardly do wrong by bringing the family to this jewel. The schools in surrounding counties bring the kids on field trips during September thru October. So you may wish to mention this to your school if they dont already know. The ladies at the farm house look grumpy but they are harmless and provide a large amount of information. Thank you ladies!
I liked it very much they should bottle the spring water best water ever
So many things to learn and I can not wait to see all of the restoration they have been working on!
The early American and Native American history is romantically presented at the Johnston Farm in Piqua Ohio. There is the large farm house as the Johnston s had 15 children 14 lived to adulthood. John Johnston was an Indian Agent and so much more. He was a Canal Commissioner and the canal can be seen from his home. You can ride a large replica canal barge when you visit. The barn is original and hugh and a spring house. There is also a Native American donut mound and a museum devoted to the Native Americans. And you can walk the Buckeye Trail to lock 8. Do wear pants and a long sleeve shirt, because this trail is overgrown. The museum personal can tell you where the trail starts. There is a bit of a walk to the first blue blaze. Enjoy!
My wife and I love history and are grateful for places like this. The barn was amazing.
Visited this place in 2016 and was amazed. John Johnston was a very important figure in Ohio history, and generally took the side of the Native Americans. As far as I know, he lost his position for opposing Andrew Jackson on the Indian Removal act. Its one of the few places where you can ride canal boats, was once the village where Tecumseh lived, was a major battle site in the 1700s and has an Indian mound from around 1000 BC. Next to it is a cemetery that has some pretty important figures buried there.
Came here as 4th grader in 70s.. nice memories.. live demostrations.... good time
Wonderful Museum and living farm! Great place to go and learn!!
Visited here years ago with my grandparents and the canal boat ride was something I fondly remembered. Had the opportunity to bring my daughter and husband and make new memories. She loved the canal boat, looking at things in the museum, and house. Lots of history, and knowledgeable, kind people.
One of the best hidden gems in Ohio and Miami County. The canal ride is fabulous.
Very nice farm and museum. My family has been here for class field trips and on family trips and weve had fun both times. Friendly staff who do a good job of answering questions.
Excellent experience! The talented, caring staff & volunteers make the visit truly enlightening. This place really needs to be preserved for future generations.
Due to funding not open daily. Would have been very nice to know that ahead of time instead of traveling almost 2 hours to visit. The info sheet we had picked up at the hotel had museum listed it as open daily.
The fee to get in is outrageous.Theres NOTHING to do except walk around. The barn area is usually closed, a path thru the woods is closed, and the museum looks like a yard sale. The property itself is BEAUTIFUL, but when they tell you the admission fee, you stop and look around for amusement rides or something, and theres NOTHING.Lower the admission fee and more people may be willing to stop by and walk around and enjoy the peace and quiet of the place. Have a guided tour of the property, DO something because all people can do now is walk around and look at trees and an empty house and a half ass museum.Oh and refreshments? A water fountain.Obviously the place is run by a group of idiots not smart enough to realize they paid the entertainment way to much during the Heritage Festival, and due to this went broke. If you want a day out with the wife and kids, dont go here. If you want some alone time on a beautiful spot and are willing to dish out some cash, this place is for you.
Lots of fun!!
Great place to learn about history.
