Very beautiful hidden historical piece of the puzzle to the great pride of Philadelphia. Keep our enriched historical mementos in tact so future generations learn and take great sense of pride with tremendous zealousfulness. Appreciate the tranquility of the natural habitat and handle with gentile care. Keep it clean. Make it clean. Give back to the earth from wence thy came from. (^∇^)ノ♪
A mostly abandoned appearing cemetery, but the naval section is still well cared for. Government money pays for that, I guess. Its a cool place to walk around or bike to from West Philly. Usually theres hardly anyone there. Its overgrown and mysterious and natural, and up on a hill that you can see the skyscrapers of downtown from.
Its a total catch 22 in that it is absolutely stunning to go through and explore, but a shame at the same time that it has been so forgotten about and that entire sections of the cemetery are lost under heavy brush and wooded areas. It makes for great photography and is just filled with fascinating history, architecture, and diversity. It is absolutely stunning and gorgeous, but again... Sad. There is a volunteer effort trying to clean it up and maintain it, but it is a huge job and will be years and years before they are caught up. Beautiful cemetery fantastic views just went there for the first time Friday oct 30th originally grew up off city line av in west philly relocated to lancaster pa well worth the drive
For you people complaining of the conditions of the grounds....first off, this place was ABANDONED by the owners back in 2011. The Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery a NONPROFIT CHARITABLE organization consisting of strictly ALL VOLUNTEERS have worked many thankless hours trying to restore and revitalize this historical cemetery.Secondly, we not only are VOLUNTEERING our time but we have to MAINTAIN the property on DONATIONS which means WE WORK FOR FREE ON A VERY LIMITED BUDGET.Those of you who want to complain should rather either get off your butts and come VOLUNTEER your time or DONATE to the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery so to address the issues that you complain of. If you dont want to come and help or donate your money then shut your mouths. What IS DISRESPECTFUL is people complaining and NOT DOING ANYTHING to HELP MAKE IT BETTER!!
As a kid, my grandmother lived 2 blocks away. Many times we walked around the cemetary. This was in the 1960s-70s. Was in rundown condition then. Now far worse. Going about the area was safe back then. The entire area now a ghetto. Only a few decent looking homes. Best to stay away from there. Only way I go there is in an armored vehicle.
Wonderful day to find define family. Ken Smith was so thoughtful, & kind to help usTruly a great day
So the best way to enter both sides of the park is by parking near the Cobbs Creek Parkway and then walking to the back entrance (which isnt locked). You might be sketched out as things are so overgrown its eerie, so dont go alone! Expect to see a lot of wildlife, too. Its a beautiful, decayed spot at this point and worth every moment.
It might not be the best but it still a good graveyard that i wouldnt mind being laid to rest there i was walking through the it today and i cleaned off some head stones wishing i could help them more there one head stone that fell over and if it there next time my friend with me we gonna pick it up and put it back in place there so many beautiful headstone to look at and seeing how old many are so i want to thank the family and friends who keep up on this place as best as they can and wish them the best of luck
So unfortunate that an entire cemetery has been abandoned. Fortunately, certain areas are being taken care of by private individuals and groups. The upside is that it makes for a great place to take pictures. History, decay, and respect.
Mount Moriah is an enormous, abandoned cemetery in southwest Philadelphia. In the country when founded, it has not been maintained for years. A volunteer group is working to clear the overgrown cemetery, clear the gravestones and bring new life, and perhaps some death, to the old place. The old gate house is badly deteriorated. The place looks perfectly spooky, just like a good cemetery should.
The history of this place is off the charts! And for those of you who are complaining about the condition of it.... what do you expect from an ABANDONED cemetery?!?! The last known owner died years ago and friends of Mt. Moriah are doing their best. Thank you all for the good work!
Large cemetery, need better fencing.
In my humble opinion this is a fairly average, unremarkable cemetery. Not worth a special trip unless you’re a die-hard cemetery fan.
The upkeep of this cemetery is in poor condition. They only tend to the areas visible to the Cobbs Creek and Kingsessing Ave grounds. The neighbors on the 1700 block of Avondale St. is and has been subjected to raccoons, possums and deer living in the high weeds and untrimmed trees. Its sickening and disgusted. The trees, weeds and roots are pulling down the fences, electrically, cable and telephone wires. Please send help. Much needed mowing and ground keeping.
Great work from friends and family on upkeep
Great experience
Pathetic, total lack of respect for the dead
Disgrace to the war veterans that are buried here! Philadelphia cares little for veterans
Nice and clean
My family is buried there
Not in good condition
