It was actually very pretty and very nice The contemporary section was under construction at the time like they were adding new exhibits but it still seems pretty legitimate and definitely worth thinking about for being in the middle of Omaha.. you can probably see the whole thing in 2 hours and really have that full experience. staff got a little pushy towards the were closing in 5 minutes mark... but still awesome
If you have the eager for learning history and looking at Art,then this is the place for you. A place to bring yourself and family, and or even friends. A place to really take your time and intake all the vast amazing history and Art. The place has been around since 1931 and has had a plethora of knowledge ready to be digestive.
We did an amazing outdoor yoga class in the courtyard area. Thankfully I checked their website last night. Tickets to the museum itself were free - you just have to preregistration which was super simple. The pink stone (not sure what) is so beautiful and the entire campus is constructed using it. Such a great way to spend a couple of hours downtown. And honestly the high school directly East of this museum deserves some time too: it is over 150 years old and is such a beautiful example of 19th century design, construction, and building materials.
Great place, staff is super friendly and always willing to answer all your questions. The art there is awesome, all different kinds. The Spanish colonial fountain is a must see.
Super cool place to explore outside. Enjoyed the variety of sculptures and the ambience in the gardens. Confused why discovery park didn’t have signs that said “do not climb on sculptures” but then we were reprimanded for climbing....and in a place called discovery park that was seemingly for children to...discover? Regardless, we mostly enjoyed our experience!
Free museum with plenty to see! I love when an art museum is art itself; the history of this space is as wonderful as the artwork it houses. The exterior has a nice, public garden with some sculptures and water displays. Inside, there are contemporary photographs mixed with paintings from Impressionists to Asia and African artifacts. The museum is kept very clean and is generally quiet, so it’s easy to enjoy the details of each piece. Follow the signs and enjoy your time!
The people there were very kind and welcoming. Because of COVID 19 they had constantly cleaning. The art pieces are interesting and spark good conversation.
Great museum!! Lots of art and history.
Pretty decent sculptures and free to the public. The kids can run around in the fountain that has a miniature Missouri River. Some sculptures are anatomically correct.
This is such a great museum to visit and enjoy the artwork. In addition, the museum offers art classes for the public. I highly recommend the museum to anyone!
Small art museum, two to three hours, but what it has in the collection is well worth a visit. I was surprised and loved my visit. The sculpture garden was inspirational.
This is truly a gem... The museum itself is a work of art: Attractive, unique in style, and set in a peaceful lovely and inviting garden of sculpture and flora, like a diamond high up along Dodge street. You feel drawn in to see more. And you find yourself welcomed upon entry. There is plenty to see but not to the point of overload. Very enjoyable and eye- opening!
Love this experience. also the beautiful sculptures and walking paths in the outside area are nice during this crazy time.
Great museum. If you are not into looking at paintings you might get art-fatigueThe lack of rest areas, hours and the cafe being closed when I visited gets 1.5 star demerit = 3.5
There are amazing buildings and collection even though Nebraska is called the middle of nowhere.Especially, having Guido Renis David with the Head of Goliath, c. 1605 is unbelievable. The original building, Joslyn Memorial is made of pink marble and extremely beautiful and overwhelming.Additionally, restrooms are well cleaned.
What a great hub of culture right near downtown O. The people are friendly and welcoming with a cheerful spirit. The art is both moving and inspiring. Im sad I didnt visit sooner and hope to return many more times. The facilities are clean and the building will organized. Its a good place to visit alone, with friends, or for the whole family. Enjoy!
Such a mesmerizing place and great art selection. We simply loved their design and selections of art. Kids even were able to be picassos in the kids art center.
I was a bit confused on the African American art. There were only about 2 pieces the projected positivity. Other art look alot different... Its something to do but didnt enjoy the display as much.
Beautiful collections; very enjoyable museum to tour. Will definitely visit again.
As a museum, Joslyn is stunning. We hosted our wedding reception in the atrium and could not have been more happy with the event. Working with James was an absolute pleasure - his attention to detail, prompt communication, and experience in coordination was much appreciated. The event space turned out better than we could have expected,. Everyone from local to out of town guests enjoyed themselves and had nothing but great things to say.
Attended a wedding at the museum. I took a little time to explore, and it was worth it. Very kool exhibits.
This place has some amazing facts...check it out
Really cool place, lots of interesting paintings and sculptures plus a cool building design. Well worth donating to especially since its free admission
I make deliveries there and receiving crew are always very nice
Love the collections at the Joslyn. Friendly, helpful staff. Make sure you see the central fountain, and brimg change for wishes. Would be a 5 star, but it does not really have much replay ability. Collections dont change.
Relaxing and beautiful works of art. Although not much of it... we really enjoyed the glass art and the fountain. They have a great kids area where little ones can draw and create there own art. We will be back! Outside is great place for a picnic
The Joslyn is a great place to walk around, spend time with family, and relax - all while enjoying a bunch of very cool art. Admission and parking are completely free of charge; occasionally there are special exhibits which require payment to see however. There are paintings and sculptures from a variety of renowned artists, new and old. Located right next to downtown Omaha, its a great place to visit.
Please train your staff on how to speak to the public respectfully and maintain social distancing. These are stressful times please be kind.
Also nice to go and spend time just wondering around an looking at everythingIt was was the photography exhibit that I went to see this time around
Wonderful art museum with ample parking, great location and beautiful facilities. Excellent descriptions of pictures with explanations of artist, era and style. Friendly staff and a very tasty lunch menu. Highly recommended!
This is really a first class museum, comparable and even better than some in much larger cities.
For a free attraction its pretty fantastic.
This is a gem of a museum. The impressionist room in the back corner is really quite remarkable. The modem art part was not that great, but then I have been to the Tate in London. But the other half of the museum is amazing for a place its size. They have pieces that I wasnt expecting. Also, they have a really outstanding interactive childrens area (you dont have to be a kid to enjoy it.) They also have an area with books and interactive backpacks that you can check out to really learn about at work your family or kids. I highly recommend this museum.
If you like a free museum then this is it. They have medieval to modern. Asian to native American. Lots to see! The building it self is also impressive.
This is a great to know about different story, as well as different cultures from all over the world. The experience was excellent!!!
Loved this place as a child and even more as an adult : )
Wonderful museum in a stunning Art Deco structure. A real feather here n Omaha’s cap.
Loved it! We were under some time restraints so didnt see as much as we wanted. Will be back as soon as possible to spend some more time. Gift shop was also neat and picked up some great items.
I stopped in on a Friday afternoon. Free admission. The staff was very nice & asked if I had visited before which I told him I did not. He then explained everything on the map & really made me feel welcomed. The exhibits were great. I am so happy I had the time to visit while passing through Omaha.
Lovely variety of art. Small, not as great at KC. but lots of stuff to look at. They have a variety or changing art and currently a new British showcase
The museum is great. It is spacious and art is spread out nicely. I like that it contains great lighting and attentive staff. It is not an all day place to go, so a couple hours shall suffice. It contains a great variety of American art work. The shop is nice and has some unique things.
Beautiful Museum with some amazing exhibits! Well curated exhibit space with a real Midwestern lens. Some regional culture doesnt always feel completely welcoming to diverse social groups but the space itself does well at overcoming the social barriers with a welcoming smile and knowledge staff
I have always loved the Joslyn. Its one of the most beautiful buildings Ive ever been in, and its FREE! The collections are small but fascinating. Will be going back!
Awesome local Art Museum with world class art and a rotating exhibit.
Definitely a go to! Need to get out of the house? This is a go to and they have an area for kids to get creative also! There is so much to see and do. They also have a cafe if you get hungry or need a snack. I took my two year old here and he enjoyed it just as much as I did!
Beautiful, well kept museum. Best part is 95% is FREE. The other 5% would probably be for a new exhibition that just opened where you have the option to pay for that or just do the regular free area. Its also very large with many rooms and a cafe there for you to grab a bite so everything is very convenient. Staff at the front desk were very nice
A place to go again and again, especially with children. Loved looking at the art pieces in every room, especially the painting that have the realistic and bold eyes. The kiddos will enjoy creating art and movies in the Creative Lab. A must visit in Omaha. No general admission price exspect for special exhibits but donations are appreciated.
This institution is a blessing to the cultural fabric of the Omaha metro region. Profoundly important works of art available for free viewing by the public is not available in all communities. But here, it is provided and treasured by both locals and visitors. Thank you to the board of directors. We are in your debt.
Took my 3 and 4 year old and they loved it. One been in 1 museum when I was young so I was a little lost going in. Could spend hours in the childrens center. Definitely going back
Loved seeing the display of illustrator Garth Williams. Beautiful grounds to walk around.
Katie Herring is an angel and deserves a raise. I’m looking forward to visiting the museum once it opens back up. Eddie, head of security: super inappropriate how you yelled over your coworkers at my 65yo handicap(MS) mother-in-law. If you don’t want people hobbling into your building with out a mask on, maybe put a sign on the door that reads “mask required for entry” or maybe you could have mentioned it before you buzzed us in. And just maybeee you could have mentioned when we were on the phone, saying we were on the way.... thanks Katie for going out of your way to rectify the situation.
Beautiful museum that feels like the visitors are LOVED. Art is presented in a very comfortable environment and is easy to interact with. Beautiful collection overall as well as Degas, Rodin And others.
Beautiful. Small. Free. Varied. Quiet. Friendly.Impressive building, not really big. Architecture . Art nice, some of it very good. Not a lot. The expo on hunting & fishing is quite traditional. The modern and American-Indian art is really good and interesting. As is the sculpture garden. The place was extremely quiet, Sunday noon. Nice. Friendly staff. No access fee.European art not available. Bit of a downer.
Wonderful museum. It had a good mix of classic and modern art. No matter your taste you will find at least one piece that makes your heart take flight Be sure to take the time to explore the statues outside. They are delightful and worth the time even on cold dreary days.We had a late lunch in the cafe. It was well prepared and the staff was delightful. I fell in love with a snow globe in the museum store. Sadly we could not take it on the plane. The store is shipping it to me for a very reasonable fee. I will update my review when it arrives in one piece.Overall I could not be happier with the service and care all the staff showed. I loved that the museum is free, but you would never know it based on the quality of service and variety of art present. We only spent 24 hours in Omaha and Im thankful 3 of them were at the museum.
Beautiful, wonderful, beautiful people here. Making art with Cyrus was a highlight of my day. His affectious love of art!!! amazing glow on his face. Seeing art at all levels was like meeting a unicorn the first time. You walk around and look at the paintings and one will reach out to you. You will stand in awe ️.
I loved coming here as a teenager. I take my kids here to learn about the history of art and see some great work. But its also nice so that when the kids have hit information overload they can play in a kid friendly area.
This place has a lot for your money, which was free! It has contemporary art pieces all the way to renaissance era paintings and BC era artifacts. I was blown away to see Jackson Pollock, Monet, and even Rembrandt all in the same place! To have an opportunity to see this in the plains states is such a treat!
Very beautiful and wide arange of artwork. Would definitely recommend to anyone remotely interested in the art world
The art was so cool!! I had a great time viewing the artworks and the architecture of the building was beautiful as well. The gift store is nice and pretty. The kid’s area was a pretty fun place to play around in.
The art was beautiful and for a free museum I cant see where anyone would complain. There are areas that you pay if youd like to enter but we didnt go through those so I guess thats something to consider for others.
Ive been there many times over past 35 years or so and always enjoy it!Today I was out on a father daughter date with my 10 year old. We had a good time and we talked about the paintings, art, and history. In the past she was too young to enjoy it and always got board but now she is coming around. :)Encourage your kids to learn and grow and appreciate what is around them! So many things to see and learn!
What a wonderful experience. They do a really nice job with all the exhibits. We were from out of town and got to see the Saint Johns Bible exhibit...well worth it. Awesome experience. Thank you.
If you’ve ever been to the Freemason temple in Holborn, London it gives the same vibe. I wish we could have so more time contemplating the images. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. The quantity of paintings are only exceeded by the quality of master paintings. And sculptures. We had a good time and we talked about the paintings, art, and history.
We love this place every time we visit. The traveling exhibits are always interesting. Three entire place is amazing.
Best pink marble museum I’ve ever been to. If you don’t visit this museum, you are missing out.
Free! This place is free. They have a few incredible pieces and some of the friendliest docents Ive ever witnessed. We went on Easter and had the place virtually to ourselves which made for a very magical day. Its also not so enormous that youre overwhelmed and cant take it all in. We made it through most everything in a couple hours and left content. Cant wait to go again when the European wing opens again (May 20).
Absolutely love the Joslyn. The architect alone is amazing and when you go inside it’s you’ll be amazed. The art work n display is gives a rich heritage a various subjects especially on Nebraska and the original indigenous population. If you’ve ever been to the Freemason temple in Holborn, London it gives the same vibe. A lot of the exhibits are also free to view a most go if your into art and are in the Omaha area.
Fantastic place
Surprisingly great collection! The building itself is impressive, the impressionist collection is astonishing!
Beautiful artwork! Awesome area for the kids to get creative. Nice flow through the museum so you see everything. Must see. Highly recommend!
A beautiful, impressive, and quality art museum. Fantastic permanent collection displayed in a monument to art-deco architecture. Its hard to beat the free admission to a most impressive high art collection. The building itself is worth the visit alone. The staff is courteous and friendly. You can elect a move-at-your-own-pace self-guided tour. The placards provide good information on each piece to help you get the most or of your visit.Non-flash, non-professional photography is allowed, so bring your phone and snap away.
This museum contains famous artists lesser known works. Its fun to recognize the artist from the style of the work. Its nice that its a free venue, too. Great place to spend a cold Nebraska morning for kids and adults, alike.
The kids loved the Childrens Art Rom! Lots of different activities to let their creative minds fly!
I love Joslyn art museum. Free w/a $10 exhibit in addition to the free. Went the 1st time in a while & spent a lot of time in the free part, ended up spending 4 min in the $10 exhibit :( very fun afternoon. Theyve got a cafe open until 2PM, I think.
The Saint Johns Bible exhibit is fantastic. I highly recommend going to visit to see it. We went when there was a guide who could explain many of the details of the illuminations, and that was very helpful. I wish we could have so more time contemplating the images. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
This museum never fails to impress. I love that this is a Thanksgiving tradition. The Jackson Pollack is my favorite, but the quilt display was amazing!!
Our special needs young adults were treated like criminals. We were followed every place we went. We were told we were standing to close to the walls and then we were to far out on the middle of the floor. We were the only group of people to be followed. Our young adults did nothing to cause this treatment. There were little kids freely walking around, standing close to the art, yet no one told them to get away from the walls. From the minute our bus pulled up we were treated poorly. They are the rudest people I have ever meet in my life.
Super easy to navigate, very educational displays and very beautiful artwork. It is smaller than other art museums but all the workers seemed judgemental and hovered around everyone in exhibits which was uncomfortable.
Before you interact with a museums contents, you first encounter their container. From the facade of the Memorial Building outside to the Fountain Court inside, Joslyn Art Museum keeps showing off how beautiful a container it has - a container of marbles. Impressively, the new Pavilion uses the same kind of marble and is seamlessly connected to the original building.Having seen such striking architecture, it is hard to not develop high expectations for the contents. How does the art resonate with the building? Honestly, I was not entirely satisfied: the collection here is not encyclopedic and is relatively small. However, it still shows some diversity, and for the areas it covers, the objects are generally of very good quality. There is no shortage of big names in galleries of European paintings, and Greek potteries and the Native American exhibition also have interesting works. This place is free, so you could come just to admire its architecture. Even though the permanent collection is not the most extensive, it is well worth seeing. Plus, interpretive labels are abundant and nicely written in general, which may add to your visiting experience.
Lets begin by ITS FREE! Omg Ive never been to a place where time flies by and you learn, have fun, enjoy art and take great pictures all at one place for free. ((You can make donations and pay for specific art expositions that are worth the money)) We spend around 4 hrs!! The kids ALL(15,14,10 and 5) enjoyed everything. We made memories to remember. This is a place to add to your visit to Omaha.
Loved this place..has awesome artwork..the place is huge! And its free!
Was there for a college graduation. First theres no parking allotted or suggested so had to search frantically for parking at a substantial distance in a bad area to be walking. We then enter or rather try to enter Witherspoon hall. There wasnt even standing room in the hall so where constantly harassed by museum staff. If your venue isnt big enough dont endanger public
Beautiful art deco building, lots of wonderful works. They have a few Montes that are just awesome. Lots of beautiful pieces. A room dedicated to American artists. Native American beadworks and neat western themed pieces. Neat place and free to enter.
First rate museum. A must visit when in Omaha. Sundays are free!
Was a great experience. This is my first time going there. However we were just about done, we were walking through the contemporary exhibit when the employee walking through that area told me that backpack arent allowed. He was the first and only person to call me out. There were multiple curators that have walked past us not calling me out for it. There were also no signs saying that backpacks werent allowed. Besides that was a wonderful place to be.
There is just so much master painting going on here. And so many great master painters are represented here. Every era. So many styles. The quantity of paintings are only exceeded by the quality of master paintings. And sculptures.A great learning and exploring center for the kids.Your brain is going to swell up at all the master paintings...
We had an amazing time seeing such beautiful art. The grounds and building are gorgeous. It is free to enjoy. The children area on the lower level was the highlight of our trip.
Cool place to go for free!!
Great place to bring kids, the activity room is so interactive and educational
Wish I could leave zero stars. Went there with a small group of special needs kids. Were told we couldnt park our handicap bus in a handicap space. When asked where we could park, we were told, As far away as possible. We were then followed through all of the first floor exhibits by one person. When I asked if anything was wrong, I was told, Its my job to keep exhibits safe. We talked to the manager, explaining that we were not feeling welcome, and her response was to ask for our backpack tag to be returned. Sad that only some people are privileged enough to enjoy art.
Absolutely rude staff. I had my 12 year old and 6 year old with me. One kid in particular. My son who is 6 was maybe five steps in front of me and I was doing just fine watching him myself. Was told he’s needed to be at an arms length. I said okay. He then went away and came back with the list of rules of touring a museum. Rudely tried to hand it to me and then followed us through three exhibits staring. At the third exhibit he stopped us and asked if our backpack had a tag. I said no one ever said anything about it and asked him if there was anything else we were doing wrong and if he was going to continue to follow behind us the entire time. He said “ma’am I can het higher ups if need be.”We went to the front desk where the man had seen the interaction and he even seemed frustrated for us. The boys was so rude and made the experience horrible. Didn’t finish touring the exhibit because we were just put in a horrible mood.Apparently not a place to bring your kids to teach them about art. So don’t waste your time. NOT kid friendly. Please train your staff to learn to talk to your guests.
Great art center and was completely free!
Excellent art museum! Very fun to walk around viewing the exhibits. You cant beat the price as well, free! I really liked the childrens section where you could practice art yourself. What a great way to bring art to life.
This is a wonderful art museum with some truly amazing art and architecture. Its not huge so u can get through it in a couple of hours. I highly recommend going. You wont be disappointed.
Really beautiful. Beautiful artwork and building.
Great Museum. Free admission and great place to take school aged children!
The whole family admired the beautiful art work on display. The blown glass exhibits are enormous! They are beautiful, eye catching pieces on both ends of the lobby. I loved the pottery collection as well. The boys thought the Art of Seating exhibit was interesting. Two thumbs up from the whole family.
So many wonderful exhibits here on a rotating schedule. I absolutely love coming here!
