Lots of parking, a bathroom and it was away from town so no sketchy people hanging around

This was a perfect autumn day for a long walk on the Chehalis-Western Trail. It was 3 miles from the Fir Tree Road Trailhead in East Olympia to the Deschutes River @ Stedman Rd SE and I found it very peaceful. There were a few other walkers & dog walkers out enjoying the pleasant sunny day. Ive read other reviews commenting on the cyclists rushing by, but I had no issues with the numerous cyclists approaching from behind me, I either signaled with my left hand thumbs up signaling to them I was aware of their proximity or there would be a bell ringing or a heads up from them. No dogs loose problem for the duration of my hike, :)! Ive hiked this trail for years and Im aware that the closer in I am to the center of Olympia, the higher the traffic count, both people/dogs & cyclists. So, if youre able to swing it, I would recommend venturing out to one of several maintained or primitive trail heads located alongside the roads intersecting the trail south of the urban area and maybe youll enjoy it more. In addition to seeing the last remnants of fall colors of the forest trees the other seasonal treat I enjoy photographing are the various mushrooms along the trail, what a delight! Enjoy!

Apparently the local vandalism is spreading. The portalet at Fir Tree has been burned. Even without its, arguably, most popular feature fir Tree remains a great place to begin and end walking/bicycling/running.

This is an easy to find, access, and exit tail head. There is a porta-john on site. There is parking for 12-14 vehicles, but Ive had to park on the side of the road when filled up. Great trail sections in both directions

Great ride. Car was safe but there were heroin addicts sleeping in a car in the parking lot when we got there. Just an FYI

The porta-potty toilet seat was so clean that I could have eaten off of it--so I did. Brisket and ribs never tasted so aromatic.

I love to take the kids here and ride the trail towards Rainier, I would love to volunteer to pull scotch broom I see the native plants getting invaded not having a chance without help

Parking lot is a little small. There is a porta-potty but no trash cans. Dog bags are provided as well. Overall, great place to get started on a walk or ride.

Great place to start. Its 9.15 miles to the yelm tenino trail and 12 miles back to the beginning of the western Chehalis trailBeautiful country. Much of it is shady so on a hot day it keeps you cooler.

Not a large parking lot. On weekends, I would suggest getting there before 8:30am. There IS a porta-potty

I like the trailhead but taking the trail North from it would force you to walk on the shoulder of Rainier Rd., which is quite busy with traffic.
