We and another couple took advantage of the annual Free Museum Day and chose to drive from The Villages to the Appleton Museum to check it out. WOW! We certainly didnt expect to see this beautiful building in a gorgeous setting and we were blown away by the extensive awesome art on display. The diverse art forms provided something for every taste, the staff was gracious and professional and we really appreciated seeing children working on art projects and learning about the joy it brings. We look forward to returning and exposing our friends to this truly wonderful experience

Small but interesting. The dispays are well placed and artwork is spectacular. I was amazed at the size of some of the artwork. The traveling exhibit of the guitars was informative and worth the small entrance fee to the museum. The staff was helpful, friendly and professional.

Really great museum. My favorite feature was the art room filled with a bunch of supplies for you to make your own masterpiece. I could have spent all day there.

This was my first visit and I will return. First, the building itself is a work of art with its impressive entrance pools guarded by three lovely elephants (wish they were bigger), lush vegetation, beautiful architecture and elegant materials. Id love to set up a tent in the interior courtyard and just hangout. Its gorgeous and inviting!I did find myself walking in circles around the galleries but, frankly, thats a problem for me in a lot of museums. Still, I dont think it should be.The collection was marvelous, if uneven. On the high end, the African art collection is first rate (amazing masks), the Asian collection, especially the Japanese art, is beautiful and there are some truly outstanding maritime paintings.I found the older American art collection disappointing, but then Im probably all that knowledgeable. The prints were nice and, although I know little about it, the pre-columbian (?) Mexican (?) art I would guess is impressive. All in all, I was pleasantly surprise to find such an oasis of culture and beauty in a community with so many empty store fronts and neighborhood pawn shops. It is a real tribute to the taste and generosity of the Appleton family. One more thing.... it couldnt hurt to put a couple more spot lights on some of the cased exhibits–Im getting old my need more light.

This museum has a great permanent collection, and they always have some sort of temporary exhibition to fascinate the locals, all at a very low price. Discount available for college students and AAA members.

First-time visitors invariably remark that the Appleton seems a grander institution than they would expect in Ocala. Maybe thats a back-handed compliment, but however you look at it, the Appleton is a little gem. Within its sleek frame are European, American and contemporary sculptures, along with African, Asian, Islamic and pre-Columbian artifacts and antiquities. Maybe the Appleton cant afford to land top-flight exhibitions, but when Chicago industrialist Arthur Appleton chose to give Ocala his treasures, Ocala was smart to accept.
