We recently held a celebration of life at Pleasant Home. The staff could not have been better. The space is fantastic and the guests had lots of room to spread out and spill out on to the porch and grounds. I am told that a/c is in the works. This will make it even better. Alice and Paul were outstanding.
Just walked past by accident on the way to the conservatory. Stopped in on the way back to the hotel. Interesting comparison and contrast to Frank Lloyd Wrights design by a contemporary at the Sullivan firm. Interested to learn about the former owners. Got to see the second floor which was less formal and more liveable.
Amazing history and architecture with gorgeous woodwork. Com for the stained glass and stay for the stories.
A great green space surrounds this building which is just a little bit off, and that makes is interesting and endears it to the visitor. The proportions are just a bit off - everything a bit too square, no respect for the golden ratio, inside a slightly bizarre mix of old fashioned movie theatre and golden era opulence on the first floor, a bit more traditional and conservative upstairs, in the private quarters. The major surprise - ensuite bathrooms for most - maybe all? - bedrooms, definitely a rarity for the end of the 19th and start of the 20th century. There is something very personal and very moving about this building, that i cannot quite explain. I enjoyed my visit, and my guide was very knowledgeable and personable. It may not be the finest example of architecture in a suburb as architecturally significant as Oak Park is, but it leaves you with a feeling of warmth, of friendliness, as if the owners themselves greeted you to their house.
I was there for a wedding which included a tour of the house. The lions and intricate designs are gorgeous, and our guide was highly knowledgeable. Creaky floors. Amazing music machine. Delightful carvings. Prohibition secret stash and doors to nowhere. Would recommend.
Definitely take a guided tour. The docent points out architectural details that you might not notice on your own. Teachers are free.
I had my wedding at the Pleasant Home, and there are some pros and cons, here is a list:Pros:The rental price is very reasonableThe venue photographs very wellThere is a perfect amount of space inside the venue for 100 or less. They are pretty flexible with decor rules and allow you to use every room on the first floorYou can basically bring in any vendor with venue approval; we used Blue Plate for catering (I would not recommend them) and we had our own bartender (which required a village liquor license)Cons:The neighbors/venue strictly enforce the 10:00 Oak Park noise ordinance, seriously, there were police officers at my wedding at 10:30 telling us to keep it down.Dancing is only allowed on the front porch (unless you rent a tent)All in all, the wedding was perfect, we had a second venue planned after the Pleasant Home because we were aware of the noise ordinance beforehand. I would host another event here in a heartbeat!
Fabulous home and great tour. The charitable foundation is doing a great job keeping it up.
Docent wonderful.. have been passing by and enjoying outside for years so glad I went inside today
Pleasant Home is an amazing historical manor that offers tours and events to the public. The garden is a public Park thats free to walk through. Ive been here for murder mystery events as well as silent movies with live piano accompaniment and magic shows. The house and garden are gorgeous and well maintained historical landmarks.
Beautiful and historical building in a small park.
Nice home from the past beautiful windows
Been there once and i find it to be a very rich in culture place, so i would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting oak park.
Beautiful historic home with wonderful grounds, event staff was somewhat disorganized so make sure to solidify plans beforehand if you’re planning a reception
Nicely managed with knowledgeable guidesLoved the music player. Only issue is nothing else nearby.
Charming home to visit if you enjoy arts and crafts architecture. Our tour guide was pleasant and very knowledgeable. Interesting history of the families that built and resided in the home.
A lot of local history, the 1920s, prairie style architecture & beautiful fireplaces!
Very nice museum, stunning grounds. Great venue for small festival or gatherings, similar to the one I attend annually here.
Exceptional historic home and well worth a visit.
Beautiful historic home in Oak Park, Il.
Super friendly staff
Went to the Pagan Festival that is held here. Pretty interesting.
Beautiful home with a interesting history from the designer to the owners. Great place to go for a local or traveler into archetecture. Terrific guided tour. Also a park on the grounds to enjoy the view of the home. asy to find and park on the street, with local restaurants and small business shopping nearby
Architecture. History
There downstairs is a beautiful venue. Its always lovely to visit when they have an open house event
Beautiful home. Silent movies on the porch on Friday nights in August.
We had my nephews wedding there. It was lovely.
Pleasant home is a wonderful place for events.
Enjoyed the festival. The park is very nice
Pleasant Home and Mills Park are a local gem. The Art classes and events there are well attended and the park is a favorite for four legged friends.
Beautiful!
Dont pay for a tourGet a free pass at the library. Its not entirely vintage and the grounds are less so. Just take a walk around, peek in and read the signs. Village need a to work on preservation aspects of this property.
Beautiful well kept grounds to sit or walkor even toss a frisbee around.
Its a unique and very beautiful house
This is such a beautiful place! We have been to several events here. We have always loved Pleasant Home but since Heidi Ruehle-May has become Executive Director and Sarah Najera has had her input, it has definitely become a cant- miss. Thanks for making Oak Park such a go-to destination for the historically minded.
Peaceful place to be in. Great community events with friendly people.
It is not very well restored. $10 was wasted. There are better museum for free than this.
