I have played at Newton many times before and generally love the course and staff. However, today my group dealt with an extremely aggressive ranger. While being a hole and a half ahead of the group behind us, the ranger decided to yell at our group while on the 7th green, saying we were being to slow. As a foursome of walkers that finished under 3:45, I found this to be blatantly aggressive for little to no reason. I will be doing my best to avoid golfing when he is on the course, and may avoid Newton in general.
Pretty great public course and a bit of a challenge. If you like hills, then this is your spot.
First time playing in a long time. Albie at check in is a great guy. Very friendly and went out of his way to say hello and introduce me to the course. Conditions were beautiful and the course was great! Very fortunate to be close to this track and I hope the wife and kids let me spend a lot more time here;)
The Newton Commonwealth Golf Course is a fine course. As it is right outside my back door, I play it frequently. When I wake up in the morning I enjoy hearing the sounds of drives, chips, and putts. It is well maintained, though be aware of the steep slope that the course is on. It is a great deal for students, only $25 for 18 holes. Push carts and golf carts are available. Plenty of parking near the clubhouse and the first tee.
Do not go to this course! From the start of my round to the end of my round Ive never been more frustrated with a golf course. First of all the starter/ranger is rude and inconsiderate to arriving golfers at the course which was a bad start to our round. The real issue with this course though is all the construction happening around the course and signs that say they will sue you if you play a hole a certain way. Due to the course being crammed in there are a lot of houses that surround the outside of the course. There was construction noises that were going on constantly throughout our round which was frustrating to say the least. The real kicker though is that there are about 5 holes which run close to the clubhouse and condos that threaten you and state that if you over hit or hit a wood or a driver on a hole you are liable for damage and will be kicked off of the course for life. Ive never been to a course that tells you how you must play especially with golfers skills being such a wide range from good to bad. Do not go to this course, it is maddeningly frustrating to say the least.
Great course. Few minor items didnt make it 5 stars, but would recommend.
The course is in great shape and theyve added ball lifters in each cup. Beer cart and Snack bar closed at 6pm sunday left us hungry and dry for our last 9. Also, not sure why we walked 18, something about the course only giving carts to groups playing 9 holes.
The course is a bit narrow, holes on top of one another. But the people here are great, super friendly and accommodating. Played here more than a few times during covid
For what it is, Newton Commonwealth is the best value in the metro Boston area...Although the jabronis they allow to play there in tee-shirts need to learn to fix their ball marks on the greens!
This afternoon I went to play a round of 18 at the Newton Commonwealth Golf Course, when I arrived I paid $54 for 18 holes and a cart. As I am getting ready to tee off I am approached by 2 employees, and in a very condescending tone one of the employees asks me “Do you want to come in and pay?” In which I responded “and what makes you think I didn’t?”I showed the employee my receipt and he went on his way. No apology or acknowledgement of his mistake. I was appalled by the question and the manner in which this employee approached me and conducted himself. As a Newton resident and someone who has been golfing at the course for years, that experience left a really bad taste. That employee is a poor representation of the course.Response from the owner 6 hours agoOuch - I will address this today Jimmy. That is not the kind of customer service we stand by and I am very surprised and disappointed. Did you at least have a good round and enjoy the beautiful weather?Jay Miller - Director of Golf Course OperationsIt was hard for me to enjoy anything for the rest of my time at the course after being received in that manner. I think what you need to do Mr. Miller, is explain to some of the guys working there that they aren’t working at some private country club where they can afford to be as prejudice and non-inclusive as they want to be. When the word “public” is present in golf course its a different ball game.Regardless, if that was the case or not, you have a much bigger problem there within itself if you have employees working there that think that is the way you go about speaking to anyone, let alone paying customers.
Good course if you are a college student or can’t get to literally any other course in the Boston area
First I want to say I am not mad at the quality of course you get for $35 round of 18 holes while walking midweek. Its a dog track as expected, however the layout of the course is narrow, hilly, and overall dificult which makes it fun to play... until you arent allowed to use your driver on any of the 300+ yard holes with signs everywhere saying they will sue you if you hit a neighbors house. The groundskeepers were also mowing the whole course while a tournament is going on. This course is also extremely unwalkable. From the confusing tee box layout to the massive hills, and even them requiring all beers to be consumed out of cups I regrett not paying for a cart. The photo is from my center fairway drive on the 18th hole which may have been the ugliest fairway I have ever seen.
Well kept course. Friendly staff. Great atmosphere to enjoy a round.
Course is short and very hilly, but overall in good condition. It can be challenging with few opportunities to have a layup with a flat lie. Pace of play can really vary, but overall seems to be slow, so prepare for a long afternoon. If you plan on walking, expect to be tired because of the constant ups and downs of the hills. For the price, it was a great deal.
Great course love to come here with my husband, beautiful spot and fantastic services.
The best municipal course in all of Boston it maybe short in length but it makes up for that in the condition and charm. Great staff as well.
Great course for the price/cart! Arguably the most challenging, yet fun golf course under-6000 yards I have ever played. There are trees and sand traps everywhere, so you must hit as straight as possible; moreover, the hills make almost 60% of all shots either uphill/downhill; the greens are surreptitiously moderately fast. Again, great course - will definitely play this course again!
Pretty well maintained 9 hole course in Newton, most of the time youre spaced out pretty well from parties before and after you. Some greens are pretty thin and sandy. Overall though, a nice course inside the 128 belt!
Great course with friendly staff.
I had a great day playing at Newton Commonwealth Golf Course a couple of weeks ago. As a visitor to the area, the welcome from the team was fantastic, especially from the course starter, Alex. Alex gave up his afternoon to play a round with me, share insider knowledge of the course, and generally be great company. Im really looking forward to my next visit.
Great course! Not a long course but plenty of doglegs and fast greens. In beautiful shape!
Very nice 5800+ yard course. Lots of undulation. Gor traps, water, and thought provoking shots. Got to play a few tome to understand the nuances. Recommend playing, if you want a roind under 4 hours.
Love love this course
Bathrooms are open during covid19!
Nice course. Well thought out in the space available. Makes you think strategically off the tee. Tough greens with nice putting surfaces.

Honestly, a really disrespectful clientele, we were right behind the group in front of us and the foursome behind us decided to shoot up on us multiple times. Pace of play decided to blame us, otherwise greens are tough and some narrow ranges, but decent course.
Great municipal course thats challenging for every level of golfer. Its short on the yardage book but plays a lot longer with a lot of hills and elevation changes. Not a lot of holes with flat spots to hit your approach. Great deal considering its proximity to the city.
Great condition and challenging green.Excellent staff.
Fun/tricky holes and fast greens. Would be better with a beer cart.
Target golf. Dont feel you are rewarded for good shots. Would have rated a 3, but its in really good shape
Very good course.Just confusing to find some of the holes. There are no markers pointing you to each hole. But everyone is very friendly.Great prices.
Interesting course, but pretty hilly - even some of the hills have hills! Its a good workout if you dont take a cart. It was in good condition when I played there in May 2017.
Shes in good shape right now. Course is a bit tight and expect to hit several shots from hillsides but a fun course thats been a go-to of mine for years.
They don’t have a chipping and putting practice green area.
OK course for very affordable price. Not too hard to get a tee time. Courteous staff. Situated on the Newton/Boston boarder, close to the Boston College stop on the Green B line of the MBTA.
Interesting layout built on the side of a hill. A lot of holes have a severe slope across the fairways. The course is usually good shape (never dry), but the greens could use some work to make them more consistant.
Slop left, Slop right, and on and on. Very short. If you want to have fun, dont go. If you want to challenge yourself, Stow Acres will be better. Regardless, staffers are very nice.
Friendly staff at pro shop. Great program for kids to learn
Unfortunately, this is one of the better public golf courses in the area. Come here if youre looking for a quick 9-holes that wont gouge your wallet.
Course has been getting in much better shape. The new owners have put a lot of time and effort to get the course into where it is today.
Small but very calculative golf course. You need precision to keep your scores consistent. I love it.
Good for quick 18. Did a round walking in 3.5hrs. Unfortunately, theres fake putting green and just a driving net with a pad.
Very convenient and well maintained managed. People are nice. It is
Love this course. Its Fair price and in great shape
Nice folks, nice course, albeit crowded and on top of each other.
This is a really terrible course. The layout is one of the worst I have ever seen, and the greens are terribly inconsistent. To add, the management are full of incompetent nobodys who want to scam you out of every penny you have. Out of my numerous bad experiences, the worst was when a person in the group ahead picked up at least 5 of my balls. Play usually takes over 5 hours despite being one of the shortest courses I have ever played. Never going back.
Undulating fairways and greens make this a challenging course. Shop sells beer, snacks and sandwiches that you pass at the turn and again at 14. For the price it is a great deal.
Only golf course accessible from the t. Yardages were horribly wrong in both directions. There were some holes where we were off distance wise by 30 yards
Best local public course. Excellent maintenance, tough lies, bit hilly.
Decent public course, just gets pretty busy. The holes are side by side so expect to have golfers hitting off of your current fairway throughout the day.
Great course. 20$ twilight is fun.
Good track to get swings in with friends. Gets very crowded and play can be as slow as a snail
Great course that is well kept and affordable.
Great public course, a lot of hills
This is the worst golf course I have ever played at. It is actually unsafe because of how close together the holes are. Poorly maintained. Not even a bargain with Robert Lynch just down the street for the same price range. Avoid at all costs.
Favorite place to golf. Great staff!
Descent public course. Book we and lesson times for weekends in advanced.
Breath taking
Nice course ... ranger was rude
Great course!
I love this love
Good
Lots of green
Great course
I hart golllf
Public course in good condition minutes from downtown
Guy in the pro shop is kind of rude.
