Joyce was very friendly & informative. The 2nd floor is available for events with a modest rental fee. The basement is still under construction. The deck (all floors actually) have wonderfully stunning views. They have a good interactive corner for kids where they can touch things & its ok! Lol as a parent, this is always wonderful in a museum. The visit can be as quick or slow & laid back as desired.Do only see myself returning for an event or special showcase/display though.
Well maintained and educational local maritime museum. Make sure you watch the coast guard story down in the theatre, an epic sea yarn!
It is very nice place. The building was recently remodeled and looks fantastic
This a great place to visit in Newport! The museum is small and can probably be covered in about an hour, but there is a lot to learn and it is curated beautifully. They do a great job of covering Newport’s rich maritime history and the exhibit on commercial fisheries is great. We also enjoyed the art displays. I don’t think this is the best stop for young children, as it is largely informational (not very interactive). We enjoy taking visitors here, and as an added bonus, the building provides a beautiful view of the bay front.
Watching the keeper feed the giant western squid was superb. I have never seen anything like it seeing the squid wrap its arms around the keepers arms and watch the keeper gently put off the suckers one by one while freeing herself was astounding. Many other interesting and informative interactive exhibits.
Nice lady working at the desk. We picked up a copy of Oregon Coast Quests and completed the one nearest the museum. Fun!
Its beautiful, including the panoramic view of the harbor from the windows. As a person with MCS, I also appreciate that its an environmentally healthy place to visit. Lots of parking.
Amazing little museum on the hill. Focused on the history of Newport and the Oregon Coast, primarily on the history of the fishing industry. BEST VIEW OF THE BAYFRONT YOU CAN GET! Their enormous 2nd floor balcony overlooks the entire harbor and is great for watching ships come and go, or taking a look at some of the sea lions bobbing in the bay. This place also hosts weddings and other large events.
Very interesting history of the port, a great facility with a new theater, spectacular views of the port and bridge. Many different rooms and floors to explore!
Went to exhibit on the monks doing sand painting and was great, have seen before when lived in California. Wanted my husband to see it and he enjoyed it very much. Venue was beautiful and hosts were really nice. Would recommend this facility to anyone as it right across from waterfront and gift shop is really neat with all things nautical and about Oregon.
Great museum covering the rich history of Oregon coastal life and fishing industries.
I love history and boats... What more could you ask for?
Very interesting! Gifts, history, and more, open from Thursday through Sunday until 4pm. Very interesting Maritime artifacts and historical photos.
Lots of pictures and a few actual exhibits. Was like visiting a library that was focused on just fishing. Spent about 5 minuets trying to look interested in the posters on the wall but just couldn’t. It’s not the worst tourist trap in the world so I’m giving two stars. You get more history off of Wikipedia so save yourself 5 dollars and just look up the photos online.
Very enjoyable. The Diane O’Leary art exhibit was exceptional.
Beautiful building in a fabulous location. Filled with amazing artifacts and information.
Small but enviting. Nice place to relax, learn some local history, and rejuvenate before taking in more tourist activities.
A very comprehensive curation of maritime history.
It has a great collection of stuff from days gone by of the Oregon fishing industry. If info on Oregons fishing heritage is your thing, make sure to check it out. Even if you are not a history buff, its still a great place to go and see lots of neat stuff about fishing and fishing boats.
Small museum with free entry for kids. Small kids area with some dress up costumes. $5 for adults is not unreasonable but it is a relatively small museum with mostly printed placards about fishing and some artifacts from shipwrecks.
Expected more seems to still be setting up
Just did a wedding on the deck and a reception on the 3rd floor... great space but lacks lighting and ventilation.
This place is great, do yourself a favor and go check out some of what makes this area special!
Loved it.
Nice facility, great view and interesting exhibits!
Interesting stuff to see.
Cheap fun for an hour or so.
