An exquisite representation of old world opulence and glamor. Its beautifully preserved, and a visual treat.We were in Newport for a few days at the beginning of September, and this is one of the things we did to get to know the history of Newport better. The year before, we did the Cliff walk ( an experience I highly recommend and look forward to doing again in our next visit!) and it was so interesting to be inside the mansion we had glimpsed through the hedges a year earlier.It was a trolley tour with a narrated history of Newport and surrounding areas, as well as other mansions inaccessible to the public by our driver, and then we were dropped off to explore the Breakers on our own.Due to Covid-19, the tour was small and safety distance was well maintained both on the trolley as well as inside the mansion.Theres a public restroom before you enter the house, and if you have enough time after your tour, you can head outside and enjoy a snack while gazing at the stunning ocean views.The trolley picks you up at a designated time whereas you head back to the visitor center in Newport.It was an enjoyable experience, and it made me love Newport more.

What a treat to visit The Breakers. Opulent European architecture representing a era of America that was unparalleled. To think this was the summer house.Walking thru the building you can’t help but imagine life there without computers, mobile phones, and all the other distractions. It’s a place built for enjoying the views and the company of family and friends.

This is definitely a very pretty summer home. However, I would not recommend coming here if you’re not into old houses as that’s all this is. There about 10 rooms and don’t get me wrong, it’s very pretty, but it’s not worth $26 a person at all. It’s about 30 minutes of walking and if you go there for pictures just look them up online, nothing special.Very very very expensive and is definitely a tourist trap

Totally worth seeing! 26 bucks gets you transported to the American Gilded Age. You can take a self guided tour (they have WiFi so you can download their tour app) and go at your own pace and marvel at the craftsmanship and decadence of The Breakers. Elevators are currently closed due to COVID19 but they tell you about that before they sell you the tickets. The tour has great snippets about the lives of folks who lived there and information about each room. The grounds are wide open for a stroll and fresh air and I really appreciated the enforcement of the mask policy.

First floor was interesting and rich decorated. But other floors was poorly furnished. Third and fourth floors was closed. So you will see 2 floors only. It was kind of disappointing. App guide was great idea.

I visited during COVID-19. If you can use the restroom prior to arrival please do so. The bathrooms are not large and they can only accommodate one person at the time which can make lines long. Staff are friendly. Totally worth the money. Magical and romantic. If it’s not hot out, take a picnic and leave in car until your tour is completed, then picnic on the lawn in front of the ocean behind the house. A few were out with baskets and wine when we went.

Amazing piece of history of Newport RI. Huge mansion still has most if not all of the origial 1800s & 1900 furniture. My kids 9 & 5 had a blast playing and running in the backyard of the mansion. Free parking for guest. Tickets are 26$ adults 8$ ages 6-17

Tickets at the gate was $26. The estate was amazing. Beautifully preserved architecture and furnishings that gives you a glimpse into the past. The knowledgeable staff stationed at certain areas of the tour gives you a brief history of the area you are in. Dont be afraid to ask questions about things on the wall or anything around, the staffs explanations will surprise you. Bring a camera and enjoy the beautiful scenic views indoors and outdoors of the estate.

Awesome place..I am a fan of big mansions... Great historical architect..very nice and well managed...each and every place and corner in the mansion has a unique style...staff rooms.. living room.. drawing room.. kitchen..rest rooms... kitchen utensils...each place has its own history and creativity..in case in your family you dont like mansions... still go with your family and you can enjoy beautiful nature and parks outside the mansions...so go there and enjoy with your family

Its awesome place and fantastic ocean view from most of the seaside rooms. Intricate carving and ornamental structures, beautiful crockery, cutlery with huge kitchen and pantry. It has paid guided tour with headphones explaining rooms significance and history.

Very interesting history and a beautiful house! I liked the audio guide tour but would recommend the phone app be improved as its currently difficult to buffer and play the audio tracks. This would help enhance the experience even when many people are using the app since you download the audio file (so wouldnt expect any buffering issues).

This was a nice tour although somewhat limited due to covid restrictions. Would like to come back another time when the servant passageways are open. Still worth the time. Beautiful home. The craftsmanship is amazing.

Having recently reviewed US history, it was fascinating to see how late 19th century industrialists were able to accumulate exceptional wealth. The Breakers shows how they spent all that money. It is staggering to take this place in and realize that the Vanderbilts really did use this as a summer home. The craftsmanship (200 or more full time employees working for years, entire rooms made in Paris and shipped to the US, custom mosaic tile and so much more. The staff on hand are incredibly knowledgeable so be sure to ask them for insights into this architectural marvel. The app is also great for self guided tours.

Great to visit! Loved the audio tour. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something interesting to do for an open afternoon or morning.

We visited during phase 3 of COVID-19 reopening and used our cellphone for the audio guide. It was a great experience walking around and listening to the stories of families who used to live there.

I demand the Preservation Society of Newport County an apology for one of its ushers unacceptable behavior towards my child. I had given some time to think about it. I decided I cannot remain silent when I teach my children that they should not tolerate malicious behaviors towards them because of the color of their skin or any unjustified reasons. My family visited the Breakers on 09/02/20 at around 10:50am. I was taking a picture with my young children (10:59am as my photo shows). This middle aged female usher with blond hair to her shoulders in black suit came to tell my daughter that the mask should be fully covered.However this was simply not the reason why I demand an apology from the Historical Society. It was the way in which she had yelled and terrified this 6 year old even after seeing her that she had put her mask back on.At the time of the shoot, my daughter stood and pulled down her mask to her chin to take a photo. Apparently this middle aged female usher spotted her from entrance door and strode to the great hall where we were at. As this female usher came down charging at my daughter, she had realized the rule and quickly put it back up to her nose. When the usher arrived my daughter was already fully covered.However the usher didnt seem to think she was done with us. We all knew why she came as we were fully covered by the time she arrived. But nonetheless she began with taunting at my daughter who was fully wearing her mask by then. She was petrified as onlookers looked at her. As if this was not enough, the usher then took another turn and yelled at me over the rules although I was fully covered the whole time. She finished her session with the longest glare at both of us before returning downstairs to collect tickets. Her glare was the longest glare I have ever received and definitely sending us signals that we were unwelcome at her place of employment. Why? She could have given her a warning with anything but such hate. Her glare was too familiar yet seemingly painful as it brought up my anti racial encounters during the wake of Covid because of the color of my skin. My feeling was confirmed as I approached her a couple of times afterwards but met with another series of very long glare everytime I approached her. I hope any recording videos could show these encounters.Overall I was disheartened and disgusted by the way this usher was trained to act on 6 year old child. If you want to be respected and heard, you should act with respect towards others including your patrons. If your organization aspires for greatness and prominence, it should start from one single usher who makes everyone feel welcome. I look forward to hearing from you.

Huge mansion located in Rhode Island built by the Vanderbilt family overlooking the Atlantic ocean. The are lots of antique items to see in the mansion and there is an audio guided tour for whoever is interested. The views are beautiful. There is a huge garden right outside. Do not miss the view from the balcony. I have added a photo of the same. Definitely recommend this place to anyone interested in mansions and a little bit of history.

One of the coolest tourist attractions in Rhode Island if you are a fan of history. If you are doing an audio tour I recommend taking the time to listen to the stories of the staff members in the house. Their insight on what it was like to live at The Breakers is very telling. This is by far the grandest of the Newport mansions, and be sure to check out the grounds after your tour, the property is just as beautiful on the outside as the mansion on the inside.

The Best of the Newport Mansions! Highly recommend, must stop here! Had an amazing tour of the home early in the day so there were very few people in the tour group. The staff was super friendly and just as informative if not more so. The home itself is gorgeous, most beautiful summer cottage I have ever seen, the history behind it is amazing, Highly Recommend! If this is the only house you get to visit you will not be let down!

Seeing the inside of this marvelous mansion was AMAZING! EVERY detail from the walls, fireplaces to the lamps were each so gorgeous, I couldnt believe it. I loved the fountain inside, the Great Hall that was 2 1/2 stories high, the huge kitchen, the big stairwells carpeted in red, the beautiful views of the ocean looking out the window, the marble bathtub and bathroom, the billiard room, dining room, so many thing to see and marvel at!

Enjoyed this tour - its self guided. Beautiful Mansion & gives you a sense of how the Elite lived in the gilded age. After the tour you can wander the grounds. Definitely worth checking out!

Worth visiting!You can take an audio tour of the house which is very interesting.I would also suggest “Beneath the Breakers” tour which explains how the mansion was built. Very educational tour. We were impressed with some ideas used to built the house. It is especially impressive for those times!

It was very luxurious and magnificent! However, they needed to shut off the second two floors because due to COVID-19, but thats not really their fault. Although, they should have halved the price considering half the mansion was closed. It was still really nice though. :)

Great scenery, clean, and beautiful garden. employees were very friendly and knowledgeable. Buy duo tickets so you can enjoy both castle. Breakers & Elms. Also buy the tickets online so you dont have to wait in line when you get their and waist 30 min.

The sea view from the balcony of the mansion was also beautiful.The audio guide and route were planned appropriately. We had a great time there and learned a lot about the history. It’s definitely a must visit place in New Port.

If you are in Newport, this is a must see attraction. My favorite house is The Marble House but The Breakers is considered the best in terms of details, history behind it etc. Definitely see it but with the audio tour. My favorite mansion to tour, along with the Marble House. Beautiful exterior and interior. Self guided tour available. Recommend purchasing the 5-Mansion pass if you will be spending a good amount of time in Newport. I was able to see 5 in one day, but you can spread the 5 mansions out over multiple days if preferred. They are all close to each other.Highly recommend this one to be a priority!

If you love history, if you love art, if you love architecture, its one of those bucket list places . It is indescribably ostentatious, an experience, especially when done in conjunction with the Cliff Walk.

Beautiful mansion.I visited during covid, I think they used to have guided tours which is replaced by audio tour using a mobile app, this is reasonable, my biggest gripe was that the app did not go past the first screen. I was told that they had this problems on Android phones. The staff there were helpful, they tried their best to help us without any luck.Moreover it was also difficult to socially distance on a weekday (Thursday) and I assume weekends would be worse.

It is a beautiful home. Truly an American castle. The views are amazing. The details in the workmanship are awesome! It tells an interesting story of a specific time in history.

I loved the Breakers European architecture. Its well preserved. And its amazing how it was constructed in just two years. Its a massive mansion. Wonder how much money it would cost if it builds today. The parking nearby is limited on a summer weekend because of the crowd. Itll take around 2 - 3 hours to fully explore the place. They dont allow tripods or flashing. It can get crowded so please be prepared for that.

Over the top extravagance for the time and today. A summer home...for the mega wealthy. Beautiful ceiling paintings, woodwork, tile murals, fireplaces, stairways. It was historical and eye opening in different ways.

Beautiful mansion. You have to admire the art of it but at the same time feel like this much wealth should have never belonged to private citizens. Thats the thing with history, we couldnt get some of these amazing fruits of hard work if it wasnt for the suffering of the others, capitalism became the new version of royalism and fundamentalism.

The rooms are exquisite and I cant believe how wealthy the Vanderbilts were. I loved hearing how the servants/staff lived and communicated in the house.

Visited summer 2020Pretty cool mansion. This place is basically an huge, old mansion that has been kept in perfect condition and turned into kind of a museum. The staff is friendly and helpful (and stays out of the way unless theyre needed). They do have a small gift shop.The great thing about this is that they allow visitors to use their own phones/headphones to listen in. The app is well made (but of course wants access to your pictures...). The entire visit was smooth and pleasant. Would go again.Theres also the cliff walk a short walk away.

The most beautiful mansion in Newport. I feel like I have been transported back to Gilded Age, just turn on the music and I Can dance waltz there.

Not a single thing is not laced with gold, but it really is a fun trip and gives you a glimpse of the past.

Visited in July during the 2020 pandemic, the place was fabulously maintained, enable social distancing and space. It felt like visiting a Beirish Sraetely home, fascinating!

In all honestly, the mansion is actually a bit overrated. Yes, it certainly holds a lot of history and prestige. However, the building itself can be a bit crowded, especially due to boundaries that prevent taking quality photos inside. For the price, its certainly better to take advantage of package deals if youre truly interested in visiting other houses. Alternatively, I would suggest just saving your money and simply perusing the outside of the building, still great for pictures! Perhaps if it were a guided tour it would be greater experience compared to simply relying on audio guides.

Spectacular! One of the must visits and the most beautiful property among the other mansions. Takes about 2 hours to fully explore. Do use the free audio guide to experience the breakers to the fullest. A good spot to spend some time or to take a quick break from the Cliff walk. There is also a store inside that sells collectibles, sovineirs and gift items

Visited on 23 November 2019. It was magnificent. Amazing to see how the ultra elite lived during the gilded age. Recommended getting annual pass to see the Newport preservation societys other properties as well. The mansion was all dressed up for Christmas, which made it even more spectacular. Entrance includes audio tour. They provide a smartphone with headphones to listen in. I recommend bringing your own headphones for additional comfort, especially if you have children. Their headphones dont fit well with kids. 4 stars because it was amazing. Didnt give 5 stars because it was very busy on the day I went and there were some areas that were off limits.

This amazing Mansion is just so amazing to look at. The details, the arts the architecture is just impressive. The Preservation Society of Newport County did a great job of saving this magnificent time capsule. You may want to set aside at least 2 hours to hear all the bits and pieces of history of this place.

We had a great seeing the mansion and enjoying the grounds. Definitely a must see if in the area and can spend a few hours there. Other mansions are in the area, we chose this one.

No AC obviously so too hot/humid to enjoy the day I went. If you can spend some time and learn the history its very interesting but cant beat the view just awesome. Felt the App wasnt working right, seemed the room descriptions were not in the right order.

This place is absolutely beautiful. I love history and I love architecture, so on this tour I was in heaven. The art in this mansion has such details and meaning behind it all. The best time of year to go here are during the holidays so you can enjoy the Christmas lights and decorations. Within the house, there is an audio tour that lasts about an hour as you weave your way throughout the house and learn the history behind each room. This place was breathtaking. It’s hard to imagine and believe how they were able to build such a massive house with fine details back in the 1800s. I wouldn’t mind coming back again one day.

Super fun walk along the coastline near the mansions. Some spots have waves crash over the walls, be prepared to get wet if you arent attentive. Couldnt see many of the mansions like I had hoped, but still worth the time. One section was very stinky from rotting algae that was trapped along the rocks and small sand area. Easy for adventurous kids.

Ahh to be rich! Great place to go. If you like Downton Abbey then this is a MUST!

Go on the cliff walk and you can view the back side of all the mansions. It’s very serene and beautiful as well. Just watch out as the walkway does end and becomes a rock cliff!

We visited this great historic mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. The grounds surrounding it were fantastic, and fitting for such a splendid property. The Breakers is situated on the southern part of Newport, RI. It is an oceanfront property which is in close proximity to the famed Newport Cliff Walk sea side trail. This and many other wonderful examples of Newport’s architecture and coastline are available to view from the cliff walk. Many of them mansions are available for tours, and make an excellent destination for a day trip, or weekend visit!

If you have time for just one of the many Newport mansions, then the Breakers is a good choice. Huge. Magnificent. Well maintained. Good Christmas decorations (check website for more info). Great during the summer time. View of the ocean is also amazing!

Touring The Breakers mansion was an experience I’ll never forget. As soon as we parked, I was astonished with the beautiful view. After purchasing tickets, we walked into the mansion and were given a set headphones. I really liked this approach as you can tour at your own pace. I absolutely love the idea of a virtual tour. The mansion itself was beautiful. The tour explained everything in perfect detail. The Breakers was a great experience. I would definitely recommend coming here.

First it is the biggest of the Newport mansions, an elegant place, and very nicely decorated for Christmas. The tour is an audio tour with multiple language choices, which allows you to move at your pace and you get insight to the house, family and history. The outside grounds are more simplistic, but a nice view and near the beginning of the cliff walks. Well worth the time to see.

The Breakers is probably the most stunning of all Newport Mansions. Pay a visit to this mansion for a taste of all things grand and travel back in time to the gilded age. Educational for children of all ages. After your visit, walk the Cliffwalk for amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean.

This was the 1st of 5 Gilded Age Mansions we toured one day a couple of Octobers ago. It prepared us for what was to come, an exciting day as we are both history buffs of this enchanted era. This mansion was built as the summer home of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, the eldest son of William H. Vanderbilt, the son of Robber Baron, Cornelius Vanderbilt. It is the largest of the Newport Gilded Age Mansions consisting of 70 rooms. The mansion passed on down through and their heirs still have the right to stay on the 3rd floor which is off limits to the public. Fascinating.

Buy your tickets online if you want to save time and maintain safety measure during this pandemic time, it is a wonderful place to spend a few hours seeing the majestic beauty of this mansion, the room are so eligent and wonderfully designed .Make sure to download the newport mansion app on your phone before going into the mansion as internet signals are bad inside .entrance are closed by 5pm, and prices is 26$ for adults. There plenty of parking outside the mansion ..dont miss taking a photo of famous breakers entry gate .. and also try their cliff walk for a thrilling experience.

The home was stunning. The audio tour was helpful, but I kept having to switch back and forth for pictures. I wish it had the option to play through.

Very interesting history and architect. The views of the ocean are beautiful. This estate is part of a number of estate that belong to a preservation society. We found that the pricing is very confusing with all types of up sales and information that seemed to be different from one place to another, and the workers did not seem to want to try and help customer to understand. Over all we found the workers to be at best indifferent and at worse rude. The Breakers has some interesting items like the bathtubs with four knobs, can you guess why? The majority of staff made you feel that you were lucky to have them show up to help. Bottom line if you enjoy beautiful architect and a view of how the uber rich lived then this is a good tour just dont expect a lot of help or courtesy from staff. Rate it a 2 star for the view

Ive visited this mansion several times (I think this made my 8th visit) and will be back again. Every time I learn something new. Seeing how the more fortunate lived is fascinating, but the level of detail is extraordinary. The historic society is doing a fantastic job of maintaining the property and need our assistance in keeping their program alive. With COVID interfering with all tourism, they have dropped attendance from 1M to 100 thousand! A 90% drop in revenue. The Breakers has always been my favorite, but take advantage of all the others as well. They are addressing the COVID requirements very sensibly and theres plenty to do in the surrounding area. Always a great time!

Great place to visit during Covid. You have to buy the tickets ahead of time via their website. You also need the app to listen to the story so remember to bring your headphones. Less people so it is great to take pictures. I have visited this place twice and its better with audio. The story makes the mansion that much better

Its a cool place to visit on a sunny afternoon. The museum has an app that you can download to learn more about each room you visit. It takes about 1.5 hours to go through each room if you listen to all the recordings on the app.

Beautiful but short tour. Not much to see really. I would stick with just doing Elms honestly.

This is a wonderful place to visit. It is getting two stars due to the fact that no COVID social distancing measures were enforced. The place was way overcrowded, there were a bunch of “nose poppers” that the staff clearly saw but chose to do nothing about, the social distancing rules were not followed or enforced AT ALL. I even saw staff incorrectly wearing their masks.
