Best temple to see illustrations of the life of the Buddha Sakyamuni. The only temple in NYC with a set of 32 pictures. Spending a half hour here to see these beautiful Thai style pictures & read the captions (in Chinese & English) will make a visit here worthwhile. The 9-dragon screen high on the back wall is unique to NYC also. And the huge bronze bell is, of course, impressive. Otherwise, this temple is not special, just a spacious tourist trap. Because a donation box is placed in the middle of the narrow hallway to the main room, most visitors feel pressure to donate. But there is no admission fee & no obligation to donate. Feel free to walk right in & enjoy the peaceful ambiance. (FYI, the building is a former movie theater.)
This beautiful Temple is located at the tip of the Manhattan Bridge exit to the Bowery. To me, this location is Holy, therefore, deserves the most of my respects. This is not a tour site, but everyone is welcome to share their views and beliefs. I was respectfully asked to reserve from onsite photographs. There were people with prepossessing attire, sharing a quiet prayer by the tables surrounding the Buddha and it felt very peaceful.Beautiful Jade pieces and other pieces of jewelry and souvenirs are displayed in the front entrance for sale. Theres more valuable items located on the second floor, which I purchased a beads bracelet meant for healing and its absolutely beautiful.
Beautiful place to visit! Dont forget to get your $1 life forcast :)
Every time I visit NYC I make it a point to visit here. It feels soothing. The gift is also pretty nice too.
Big Buddhist temple with lots of space for praying. There are also shops where you can purchase amulets or prayer beads etc.
You can freely walk in and pray in this friendly Buddhist temple in Manhattans Chinatown.
Absolutely the most magnificent temple in NYC.Always a must visit, most especially around the Chinese New Year. The majestically enormous Buddha, will will always bring a smile to your face. And remind yourself of the inner happiness within your own life. Most especially important to learn real Qigong, from the true masters upon the high mountains. Most people are not aware of the divine onesupon the Mountains. Truly Magnificent ⚘ Absolutely Like
I love Asian culture, so this for me was a travel without getting an airplane. A peaceful place.
Its very awe inspiring. I was afraid to take pictures but you could feel the calm and tranquility of this place.
Price reasonable. Food is ok.
Really good experience being there. Peace of mind staying inside of temple.
Tranquil... welcoming, even if youre just curious
Very easy to find cant miss
A very beautiful place, the energy of feeling, a lot of peace. There is a small museum and many ways to donate to the temple, is to live the Buddhist experience.
Nice quiet temple with wall of buddha history from birth to his death.
Really interesting place to see.
I have never been to a Buddhist temple so this place as my first time was pretty cool. I don’t know if the staff was really nice it felt like they were talking of me as I walked by, but this random man was very welcoming. Also, I liked their $1 fortune gimmick even if my fortune was terrible. Haha
Very few tourists, bring an offering from the many fruits and flowers you can find from the vendors on Canal st. If you are a tourist please dress appropriately and observe noble silence. There is a gift shop upstairs that is easy to miss, it has chanting CDs and many crafts with an English speaker working there. I come here at least once a month, very authentic. Beautiful place. To those saying they have been to “Great Temples” and don’t like this one, I have been to Angkor and many others, but they are NOT IN NYC!! This is a Temple not a tourist site, and as a tourist you are lucky to be able to see such a nice Temple in the heart of the city, especially if you have never been to Asia.
Peaceful temple with friendly gift shop upstairs!
Even though I am not a belief in this, I did enjoy visiting and seeing firsthand. It was very pretty on the inside.
I visit this temple every time Im in NYC! Its a must see!
Lovely place with wonderful environment.
Staff very helpful. However, not all of them will speak English so please be patient. All are welcome and very family friendly.
Peaceful temple in the middle of the busy streets of Chinatown.
Calm friendly environment, definitely recommend checking this place out
Peaceful, relaxing, and everything Buddha sought to share with humanity. Enter and find inner rest.
Nice temple. Big Buddha.
Definitely a wonderful place to visit if you have any interest in Buddhism.
Very pleasant Temple that allows visitors to see and learn about Buddhist culture and religion.
Had a great experience here, the inside is very quiet and Zen. Om Mani Padme Hum.
A recent walk through Chinatown left me standing in front of the largest Buddhist Temple in New York City. Ive always seen this from afar but as I stood there I realized that they encouraged visitors of all walks of life. So I entered and was blown away by the 16-foot Buddha poised at the altar. The space eminated a feeling of peace and quiet that is a stark contrast to the streets of this bustling Asian neighborhood. The history and background on the construction of the temple are posted on the walls in English for visitors interested in learning more about this fascinating place.
The temple is supposed to be open till 6pm. We came at 5.30 and the lady working at the temple was very rude and closed the door right before us. I would not expect such behaviour at a buddhist place (May 17, 2018)
We love this place! What a fantastic temple.
Beutiful and Peaceful
Beautiful place
Forget quiet. Youre in NYC. No matter if youre in a Buddhist temple. Still in New York. Even locals talk outloud.
Bauety wonderfull place
It is so beautiful inside!!
Beautiful...very busy
Didn’t like it that much. If you’ve had the chance of being in great temples elsewhere, you probably won’t feel very impressed either. And I didn’t feel very welcome by the staff...
Beautiful and cultural.
Interesting enough if youve never been to one. Feels like a small town church with lots of neighborhood ladies with bags of groceries.
Beautiful temple and lovely store upstairs. Will visit again next time I’m in NY.
One of the largest temples around New York City, a little hard to find but very close to the entrance to the bridge. Colourful, Calm, Scintillating and Peaceful
Stumbled upon this place by accident but really enjoyed my visit there and learning a bit about Buddhist faith and the story of Buddha.
Great location very spiritual
Not even buddhism can save me.
I felt a peaceful energy the moment I entered.
Chinatown most peaceful place... Or NY most peaceful place. Love it because I could stop to meditate and regain energy for the trip.
Great place!
Lovely warm spiritual place
Peaceful.. no other words to describe
Loved coming here. The temple if small, but Buddha is huge. Very informative pictures.
Beautiful place with a lot of history
Nice for a short visit
I am Tibetan, I been in the temple once. Its a beautifully temple and I sow the strong a Bhuddha on the wall. Awesome
Beautiful and wonderful place for praying
China town....is not like amazing but you have lot of places around to take photos
Beautiful, an oasis from the busy surroundings of Chinatown. A bit hard to spot, but well worth a visit if youre in the area. Also, you can get a $1 fortune!
Interesting visit if youre in the area. Entry is free but donations are suggested. No pictures allowed inside.
This is located at the end of Chinatown. OK place to stop in if youre interested in Buddhist culture. Not really that much to look at.
Nice. Their fortune teller is a bit accurate.
A great place worth visiting
Get over here and get your meditation game up my man... Ommmmmmmm talk in bout that ommmmmmmmm

Great place to visit as well as China Town.
Good to see and read the frames, taking pictures not allowed

This place used to be a movie theater. Very nostalgic.

The Noble Silence
Peaceful and fulfilling
So calm and divine!!
Spiritual cleanse
I will always stop here whenever I visit. The shop on top is overpriced, so be warned. Come pray and meditate. If theres a funeral taking place, you will not be able to access the main altar.
