I was formerly a Bat at The Flea Theater. I, like many others, knew we would not be paid for our work and understood we had to volunteer extra time to maintain our position in the company (of which we received NO COMPENSATION, mind you).I acknowledge and can vouch for the many testimonies of my fellow company members who have been mistreated, reported harassment and assault, as well as advocate for themselves and the company to be paid for our work. I, along with 2/3 of my cohorts, was downsized and phased out of the company during the transition of new artistic leadership under Niegel Smith when company members had to re-audition for their own spot in 2015.The Flea was called out by the most recent generation of Bats amidst the social uprising of the pandemic, demanding equity, transparency, diversity, and restorative justice. They opted to disband their entire resident company of actors, writers and directors when they Initially claimed they would work together with the current company members to meet their demands. This is effectively erasing the long-standing work that their volunteer company established, which certainly contributed towards the state-of-the-art, multi-million dollar, multi-venue performance space they recently moved into. All this because their volunteer members wanted to be paid and not be mistreated anymore. Lets also be mindful that The Flea has also received several hundreds of thousands of dollars of PPP due the covid-19 pandemic, downsized their paid staff members who stood with their volunteer members and has wealthy individuals on their Board of Directors who could have certainly worked out a means to compensate the artists they provide a platform for.I have also attached the statement made by those members directly affected by The Fleas decision to dissolve their residency programs. It is now on you to decide if you support the predominantly white institutions that perpetuate systemic abuse and mistreatment or the artists who create the art that you consume and enjoy.
The flea theater does not pay or respect the time and talents of their artists anywhere near well enough.
Very disappointed by the disassociation from all your RD’s, BATS. Ashamed that I once associated myself with such a now-reprehensible organization.
Went to go see the play Syncing Ink here and the play was TREMENDOUS. If its playing, you should go see it. It is GREAT immersive and interactive theater! The set of Flea Theatre really allows for that (as you can see in the pictures) and that production really took advantage of it all.Drawback is the small lobby area and concessions are severely lacking because there really isnt much of a dedicated area for them. Some ppl just brought their own food. At least you can bring your own food and drink inside the theater.
Theatre is in a wonderful new space! There is an elevator and bathrooms on the 1st level. No stairs to go up.Several wonderful theatre spaces. We saw Southern Promises by Thomas Bradshaw ... A very innovative production. We returned for the childrens play on Saturday. We also became members of The Flea Family.Congratulations!
Fulfilling a true artistic mission. The work produced here is urgent and thought-provoking and, just like the name of the theater, it gets under your skin. (in a good way).
We saw the play THE GREAT NOVEL by Amina Henry. It was a powerful play with a splendid cast. The grandmother, played by Madeline McCray, was especially engaging. The theater is small, with only three rows, so all seats have an intimate feeling. The play runs through June 29, 2019.
Great adaptation of Anna Karenina: A Riff...amazing cast and use of space.
Ah, a trash heap.
Nices theaters shows plays and dancing. Very easy to get to.
Several intimate Off-Broadway theater spaces with a variety of genres, many from up-and-coming playwrights. Often thought provoking, always enjoyable!
The play I saw was for 2- 5 yrs old. It was ok
This is a very cozy theater with friendly staff. I saw Southern Promises here. The production and the theater were great.
I found the show to be doing something distasteful. The first part of the show put you in a mood of questioning reality and make you think about the idea that you don’t really know what is real. This was done both by characters stating this outright, and ‘glitchy’ scenes, such as the same dialogue scenes being repeated by different pairs of actors verbatim and hints at a magical creature within the show’s non-magical setting. Then, at the end, an actor comes on stage and begins screaming at and berating the audience. The show does have a world view it wants the audience to take on. These views include the evils of racism, a view I wholeheartedly agree with. However, I think that the majority of people would agree that leading someone to question their sense of reality then screaming at and berating them so that they take on your view is emotionally abusive and something they would not want done to them. Additionally, I believe that views anchored by something like an emotionally traumatic event (such as being screamed at intensely while being unable to respond) make people effectively less intelligent because a part of that experience exists in their mind and memory, and the possibility of it repeating influences their actions toward whatever concept the event is linked to, limiting their ability to think clearly and logically. I dont think it is acceptable for people to program others in this way, and I am angry that the theater felt so little respect for the experiences of their audience that they would try to sow a seed of fear that could remain with those audience members for a long time, increasing the fear they feel and reducing their ability to use all of their intelligence, regardless of the reason that the theater management had for doing so.I did enjoy the performance of all the actors except the one playing the belligerent role mentioned above, and for that, I gave a 2nd star.
I cant review what I found difficulty finding. I really meant to go to Saturday nights performance but between Broadway and Church St is like saying the Metropolitan Museum is between 5th A and Central park East. At Church street, a well-meaning girl told me her map has me walking 10minutes straight which took me to Bowling Green Station. 40 minutes and I couldnt find the theater. So I went to Barnes and Noble.
NICE CLEAN THEATER.NO LATE SEATING BUT THEY ARE VERY ACCOMMODATING WHEN IT COMES TO RESCHEDULING YOUR SHOW TIME/DAY.VERY GOOD SHOW.DEFINITELY WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION.THE SET AND THE ACTING WAS ON POINT.THEY SELL LIL SNACKS AT A REASONABLE PRICE IN THE LOBBY.
A wonderful off-off-Bway theater showcasing innovative productions.
Saw a play called Scraps. The title is the tip of the iceberg of a piece that is timely yet timeless. The Flea presents unique, different plays that are affordable. Go to this off-Broadway theater, you wont regret it.
Excellent, multi-space venue. Theres are the Pete, the Siggy and the Sam, 3 spaces of varying sizes to see a range of independent theater productions. Bar in the lobby (wine, beer and soft drinks) and a CLEAN multi-gender restroom.
The delight of top-quality Off-Off Broadway lives on.
I couldnt stop talking about my experience at The Flea last week. I really enjoyed the show, Ms. Estrada, a high and tight rompon a college campus the kept the audience both laughing and thinking, simply refreshing. The theater space is small and very well designed. The ticket process is a really easy. I think Im going to have to join to keep on having this experience over and over.
A laugh out loud show stopping set of plays
Cozy, very friendly and professional staff. Get there early to find parking. Love the patio. Imagine all types of unique things to offer. Carol was just awesome, focused and on it. Saw Southern Promises, Sunday. New added screens were fabulous. Acting was excellent. Great music track...Dillon! Best Playwriter ever...Thomas Bradshaw. Party and cake just lovely!Great play write...Thomad Bradshae
Great place to see theater productions with lots of young, up-and-coming actors, playwrights and directors. The majority of the plays have inexpensive tickets. Plays with more established actors may have a slightly higher price. The theater recently moved to a beautiful new building with three floors.
Beautiful theatre and performance space! Great for plays and classes.
Had the privilege of seeing Southern Promises, it was an amazing experience that I will never forget.
Really nice Theater, new facilities. Highly recommended for multiple presentations.
Very nice place. Clean and modern.
Went for a APAP performance. Very modern and clean space. Not super huge but plenty of room if that makes any sense.
Very cool space with a bunch of awesome shows. Great place for a night out.
Nice modern event space. Roomy and lots of variety in the many types of Broadway quality shows even though its off Broadway.
Great little theater. Perfect for enjoying a show in an intimate setting.
Sweet new space. Good views of the stage, pretty intimate. Well designed bathroom friendly for all.
Small cozy theater. There were pleasant impressions!
Great place to catch a show. Comfortable, convenient, well-run theater.
Very nice small theatre. All of the seats have a good view of the stage
0 STARS. THEY WILL NOT SEAT YOU IF YOURE 10 MINUTES LATE. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. DO NOT VISIT.MANAGEMENT IS COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED FROM THE REAL WORLD.
Nice cozy place for small plays. I saw a performance by EPIC players and it was amazing.
Laura Bush Killed a Man play was very good and acting was excellent
Great theaters. Great shows. $5 six points. What else could you ask for.
I use to love attending Serials at the Flea, but I was very disappointed with the set I saw in May. It seemed to be more on the level of some random college.
Cute theatre. I went to see Syncing Ink. Show was great!
Love the new space. Great idea with #cereals for young audiences
Excellent theatre
Great theater & shows. Very clean & modern.
Exellent place to visit.. will recommend it to everyone
Tiny little theatre with very homy feel. We saw serials@theflea - 5 short serial plays where 3 continue on the following week based on crowd feedback. Awesome fun. $10 gets you a ticket that doubles as a beer voucher. I can now definitely understand the appeal of off-broadway. :)
Impressive theater. Modern. Comfortable seating.
Im glad this theatre is moving locations because its former space smelled musty like a basement. Pros: its small and offers an intimate theatre experience.
Great place to catch an Avant Garde show.
A great new venue
Great local theater!
Enjoyed the play but the box office person was confusing, rude and should be replaced by someone who can deal comfortably with patrons especially when there are problems
Great new space!
Lovely theater
Attended the Serials and it was alright...not worth the price
Always a unique experience.
Great show
Cozy venue, great service, awesome theatrical experience
