Under renovation now, interesting space though. A theater, a school, a courtyard. There are several plaques explaining this was originally occupied by Bell Labs.

What a wonderful space! I went to see the immersive play of Among the Cedars by Maxine Kern. I will attend this space anytime. The acoustics are wonderful.

If you haven’t gone to this event at the Westbeth you should go. You will not be disappointed. The artist has created... well you have to see for yourself.

Great space. Just saw The First Shoe Collection by Marilyn Grant Barr. The show was amazing. Beautiful exhibit of porcelain shoe sculptures with riveting back story. Told 1st hand by the artist followed by a Q&A. The drawing are impeccable. The offer a candid look into the artists essence. Take time a read the written works also from Barr. Kudos to a wonderful show.

What an old concept begging for redo with only saving grace is beautiful gallery for exhibits. For residents a mixed bag of value with few younger having much better units than the dinosaurs aging in place giving parts an old age home sense only would be condemned. Open house artist walk too rare and needs many stops to find the few good work being done. But then curating good art to be admitted and continue to reside in rare subsidized housing are asynchronous. Many lost inventory and workspace in the great flood of Sandy but for some it was a bittersweet result for their accumulated work will never sell or be appreciated and an albatross but you cant tell someone that. Someone should write the soap opera of the lives of many with great experiences to share. Hard to get to and parking the worst in now trendy glass and steel forest of chic surrounding the old warehouses turned into a good idea at the time. Good luck to the new CEO,

It was conceived in the 1960s as a partial solution to the acute need to provide affordable housing and studios for artists and their families. In so doing, it became one of the first examples of adaptive reuse of industrial buildings for artistic and residential use in the United States. Located in Manhattans Far West Village, it is a complex of 13 buildings which were formerly the site of Bell Laboratories (1868-1966), one of the worlds most important research centers. It was here that the first talking movie, the condenser microphone, the first TV broadcast, and the first binary computer were demonstrated. With innovative funding from the J. M. Kaplan Foundation, and Roger Stevens of the National Endowment for the Arts, Westbeth became an ambitious renovation project designed to create 384 live-work spaces for artists of all disciplines and their families under the direction of developer Dixon Bain.Westbeth opened in 1970 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 8, 2009. Subsequently, the New York State Historic Preservation Board nominated it to be on the State Register of Historic Places. Long ago Westbeth gave an artist friend a place to flourish, live and die peacefully. A true community founded to support artists.

This is a wonderful resident place to visit, the tenants are wonderful. Theyre mostly artist who have a great mind for creativity, theres always some kind of play going on. They do a lot for the community around them. The building is also a historical landmark so why not visit. They also have a dance school, come by and visit you wont be disappoint it in fact youll leave the place with a smile on your face.......

I went here as part of Open House New York weekend. There are studios open on a regular basis. Its great to have and affordable place that artists can live and work at. There seemed to be a good mixture of different types of art displayed. Be aware that the building is under construction to repair damages from Sandy. When I was there maps were available to help you navigate your way around, this was needed since there are several buildings and finding you way around is not easy.

I watched this site develop as i graduated Music and Art high school ( 1968) and had my application denied over andd over only to sneer in disgust at the waste of potential. while the neighbothood develops ALL around and decades later i ask .....what has been Westbeths contribution ....to any of it ?

I was very pleased with the work that Alex did. He framed three crochet/needlework pieces from two generations ago and wanted to ensure their preservation. His recommendations were great and I am really happy with the final product. I will be returning with another piece very soon and look forward to seeing him in his new location!

It was a great place to grow up. I was fortunate to have so many good friends and neighbors.i wish them all well and hope theyre doing fine.

Wow. Giant converted Bell Labs building. Public oriented arts community. Housing and arts studios. Go during open houses, have fun get lost see amazing art.

Very interesting place to explore, whenever there is an exhibit, or anything that can get your foot inside! It is a piece of NY history that its still a secret spot for most.

A friend lives in this famous artists building and his studio apartment is on the small side but he loves it. Also, an old acquintance, a classical composer, lives here with his piano and his beautiful apartment has very tall ceilings.Westbeth is a great place for working artists that is affordable since Manhattan rents are expensive.Although I have moved abroad, forsaking Manhattan after many years, I still have several friends who live in WestBeth, and they are happy to be in this building.Some apartments at WestBeth have Hudson River views, and the West Village neighborhood is quiet, with a DAgastino supermarket and a smattering of good neighborhood restaurants nearby.
