Actually went to see the Sweet Dreams exhibit, which was pretty cool. The desserts looked so real and beautiful. The rest of the museum was small. There were some nice paintings the rest I didnt really care for... which isnt important because everyones eye is different. Overall it was nice to see the exhibit before it leaves and Tiffany at the front desk was very pleasant and helpful.

My first time at an art gallery. This was amazing! So many talented and beautiful paintings and sculptures. Its spanned over three floors and they had a huuuuuuge antique library!!! Was pretty cool. The bottom floor was kinda creepy for me though. Too many dolls lol. We were able to take pictures (no flash) so I got a lot of good memories. They also give you a small treasure hunt/I spy pamphlet that keeps you interacted. Would definitely recommend coming here for a small family activity or just to pass some time by yourself and enjoy so beautiful art.

I visited this museum for a class assignment, and did not even know it existed. But after going, I want to go back again. The exhibits were astounding, the staff were friendly, the building itself was beautiful. Highly recommend this to any art lover or anyone in general.

Went specifically to see the current exhibit of giant candies, ice creams, donuts, etc. Very realistic. Ended up looking at the Louis Comfort Tiffany exhibit, and other artwork. Beautifully maintained art museum. COVID-19 protocols being followed. Museum is handicapped accessible with elevator to get to upper/lower floor.

I have been to this museum twice and both times the exhibits exceeded my expectations. The museum offers both permanent artworks and temporary exhibits that change throughout the year. The museum is a good size and also offers landscaped grounds to check out with outdoor art installations. I will be visiting this place again one day.

What a pleasant surprise! This museum isn’t too small or too big... it’s just right for an afternoon visiting with family in SE CT. The variety of exhibits was nice, and I especially enjoyed seeing the focus on art featuring local scenes, etc. I’d recommend this to anyone, residents and visitors alike.

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum was an unexpected treat. My family planned a short beach getaway. Unfortunately, our plans for the beach were thwarted by inclement weather. On a whim, we decided to check out the museum. The Lyman Allyn Museum was one of the highlights of our trip. It was amazingly child friendly. Both my 7 year old and 4 year old loved the art scavenger hunt. The loved winning their prize pencils. We all liked exploring the collections of American art from many eras ranging from the Colonial Era up to contemporary time. The basement was devoted to childrens education and enjoyment. There were displays of antique toys including a large scale dollhouse. There were also instruments, educational toys, and comfortable cushions.Outside, there are large scale sculptures. We liked exploring the grounds. The Lyman Allyn provides a great child friendly cultural experience for the whole family.

A museum that packs a lot of punch for its size. The permanent collection boasts some fine pieces, including a Gilbert Stuart and an And Warhol, plus it melds local history and the broader history of American art seamlessly (though America is not at all the only focus). The most recent exhibitions - one showcasing the art and design of Louis Comfort Tiffany (he who made Tiffany and Co. a household name) and a retrospective of the work of Walter Iooss, perhaps the most significant sports photographer in history - are indicative of the overall quality of the museum.

Nice museum with four or five different galleries. They get good exhibits and change them often. They have a nice permanent collection and sculpture garden as well. The museum is free to New London residents with ID, and Ive enjoyed that perk. Its a kid friendly place, and they have a little scavenger hunt for the kids to do in the permanent collection. When its completed, they get to pick a pencil or bookmark. They also have kids crafts on Saturdays and a giant dollhouse I-spy activity.

Nice spot. My kids and I attended one of the first saturday activities (which are usually free) that they offer which was painting a pumpkin at that time. The employees were really nice and helpful. We were even allowed to go inside the museum for free. The outdoor sculptures that they have are really interesting.

A wonderful hometown gem of a museum. Small enough to see everything on display in an afternoon, but between their rotating permanent collection and temporary exhibits it will never bore art lovers. Frequently hosts free events so you can get a taste of the benefits of paying for museum membership if you’re able. Welcoming to families, groups, and individuals.

I admit that I am biased, but the Lyman Allyn is a beautiful museum, with the most gorgeous exhibition featuring the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany, not just his windows and lamps, but an impressive diversity of talents are on display. In the basement is a cute room for playing with younger children, although my 12 year old niece and I had a fun time having our own puppet show for ourselves. The staff is warm, and if you live in New London, the admission is free!

Another Connecticut gem in the crown of art museums. Lyman Allyn always has interesting changing exhibitions of current artists as well as their permanent collections. They have free events monthly and its a great place to bring the kids. Parking is free and theres a picnic table out front if youre coming from some distance and want to have a bite to eat before you leave. Be sure to pack your own food for the picnic because there are no restaurants within walking distance. Also within walking distance is the Connecticut College Arboretum so if youre looking to extend your visit this is just a short walk up the street. Its a great place to visit from spring to fall.

A very nice, totally manageable museum. Not too big. The collection was good too, with a nice mix of contemporary and older art. They have a nice area for crafts for the kids as well. The only knock against it is that big highway someone built in front of it. Otherwise it is in a lovely setting. The building itself is beautiful as well. They should consider adding more of a gift shop too. I think they had one or two books for sale.

Im not a very cultured individual, so it wasnt quite my speed, but it was still a very nice way to spend a cold or rainy day. There are three floors, the top floor was by far the best and the largest with not much of the room taken up by anything but art. The main floor had several exhibits as well, and the lower level focused on a childrens area as well as conference/training rooms. The exhibits generally followed a theme with several peices following a specific artist, subject or geographical area. Their website has press releases on most exhibits as they come out. I was able to see the Emil Carlsen (mostly oil works), and the JFK exhibits. Many of the exhibits tell a story so its useful to travel through them the correct direction, which I messed up at least once.

Another one of CTs hidden art gems. One of my favorite painters is Thomas Cole and the piece they have is absolutely beautiful and they have it showcased perfectly. They have a great collection of American Impressionism, Tonalism, Hudson River School, and Modern Art. If you are an art lover you need to visit this place.
