Go on a Sunday, free parking all around. Have an early lunch or brunch then go to the gallery as it opens and wander about for four or five hours. Come back again and repeat or go to the British art museum, really wonderful. And the art gallery is free, make a contribution if you like or just enjoy for free. Great paintings, all styles, sculpture, artifacts, you name it.
They had an amazing exhibition about Matthew Barney and it was definitely worth a visit. For the Barney exhibit, the scale, beauty, and technique of the piece showcased an excellent who is doing amazing work. Their permanent collection is also incredible and the museum is free so go visit!
I had no idea YUAG houses works by the great European giants. This is a hidden art lover’s gem in the heart of New Haven, for sure. My favorite is the hall with Roman sculpture and the top floor with modern art exhibitions. Don’t forget to check out their rooftop view.
Incredible treasure in New Haven, with an amazing permanent collection of everything from ancient to modern and great rotating shows. All for free. If you make it up to the top floor, check out the outdoor sculpture garden for some good views of New Haven.
This place is amazing! All kinds of art, both historical and modern and Im pretty sure its free. If you love art or history, this is a must see in CT.
Interesting museum with art for all. There are many decorative art pieces including silver and china. Asian Art and antiquities are abounding. My only problem was the lowness of the placards which were difficult to read. I understand it’s to respect the handicapped but a few inches higher would help average height people and still be of benefit to wheelchair users. I hope I haven’t offended anyone and if so, I am very sorry.
I visited Yale university Art gallery couple of months back with my friends. This was one place which instigated my interest in the Art galleries. There are some classic paintings are here. Apart from that you can get closer to African and Asian art. If you have decent knowledge about art then you can spend days here without even noticing. Must visit!
I love art, especially when it has minute details, creativity, variations of light, and depth. You will see many like that here. People pay a lot of money to see works of art; at Yales Art Gallery, admission is free.
Beautiful uber historic paintings. Being a Brit myself living in the US, but also living just in the next block from the British arts museum is absolute delightful. Entry is free, excellent customer service by very knowledgable staff. Highly recommend it!
I never knew how big some of those paintings were until I went and saw them - especially the Edward Hopper ones - this place is a must visit if you find yourself at Yale - also, free on most days, so, why not?
Very clean, so much to look at, and even on a rainy day the museum was still super clean. Very friendly staff, nice ambiance. A must see on New Haven area, also check out the Peabody too !!!
Small, but very nice gallery featuring works from Asia, Africa, Europe, The middle east, and North and South America.Parking can be an issue, but the admission price is free. Well worth a visit.
This gallery was such an experience. Words cannot express the beauty.
I love this place. Free resource! Great African collection and some great paintings are here including “The Night Cafe” by van Gogh. There’s Rothko, Kandinsky, Gorky, Ledger, Braque, Picasso, Duchamp, Pollock, and much more! Dont miss the peaceful sculpture garden on the way out. In my opinion Georges Braque was so much more talented than Picasso but might have lacked in charisma and salesmanship to have the successful long career Picasso enjoyed.
Great place to spend an afternoon. Parking garage two blocks away easiest way to park.$2 an hour on the weekends. Kids loved it. They have a family might with activities for small children from time to time.
The Staff here are professional and courteous. They are also understanding, as admittedly my kids were not on their best behavior even with me diligently watching them, and keeping them within arms reach. The staff politely instructed them to keep away from the art on two separate occasions but allowed me to step on and take over as their parent. I really appreciate your dedication to this wonderful art and also understanding parents. I believe more galleries, museums and other consumer stores could learn from your staff. Exemplary
What a wonderful surprise. The museum was SO much bigger than we expected that we have to go back to finish. From ancient sculptures to the most famous artists, it was something new at every turn. Kids enjoyed it too - highly recommend.
This museum should not be missed. Great way to spend a couple of hours immersed in multiple cultures. And its free.
Really nice collection of arts, wished there were tour guides in every section so I can learn more. Went once, definitely going again.
Nicely curated museum with a wide variety of pieces from modern to the masters. The building is a work of art unto itself. A nice place to enjoy some very fine pieces.
I traveled six hours to Yale University Art Gallery to see one work of art “The Night Cafe” by Vincent Van Gogh, What I found there was one of, if not the best museum experiences to date. Rather then go right to the Van Gogh, I started from the top floor and worked my way down. The collection is exceptionally curated, every room houses wonderful works of art and artifacts. The best part, it’s intimate, not overwhelming with too much of one discipline. Every room invites you into the next, piquing you’re curiosity to find out what’s around the corner, or down the steps. The museum can easily be browsed in a few hours, but it taunts you to stay longer, if not come back the next day. The accessibility, structure and flow of the collection invites you to take a deeper look of why art matters. As far as the Van Gogh, no print can due justice to this uneasy masterpiece. It’s a glaring, unflinching look into that one drink to many night. The painting doesn’t ask you to like or dislike it, but the man in white demands that you at least consider it. While not the merchandising value of a night of stars, vase of sunflowers, or a bed of Irises, The Night Cafe quietly stands amongst Van Gogh’s greatest works of art.
Loved their sculptures garden. You can even see skull and bones from the fourth floor. ;)
Beautiful art and they have a Basquiat!!
You wont ever get bored visiting this place. Especially during summer when you can see pop-up concert from the students in New Haven, its so wonderful.
Amazing experience! Was not expecting to see that many different well known artists. They got Picasso, Mondrian, Degas, Basquiat and so many more extremely popular artists in there. Not to meantion the historical art pieces from Ancient China and Egypt.
I was surprised at their vast collection. There is enough in the museum that you cant see it all in one day (which is fine because its free admission). Their Modern and Contemporary section is very cool. I do wish they had more sculptures though.
Four whole floors of amazing artwork to explore. Could spend an entire day here. I usually just spend an afternoon. I love the modern art section. Love going back here occasionally to see my favorite pieces and enjoy some new ones. Theres also a nice balcony with some sculptures and cool views of the city.
Great place to spend with your family.
Incredible museum, friendly guards - just dont try to bring in a backpack!
Well done glass exhibition, not perfect and missing quite a lot of various American glass makers.
Probably the best free art gallery Ive visited. Interesting and accessible collection with an impressive variety of genres/geographies represented. The museums layout makes it easy to take a methodical journey through the entire collection, OR to pop in for an hour and focus on only a few wings. The architecture itself is also gorgeous - definitely check out the courtyard and the Old Yale Art Gallery building.
Fabulous art collection. Free admission. On street parking only.
A very large collection of art that includes arts from ancient Greece, Rome and other ancient Mediterranean civilizations, Renaissance-Era pieces, modern art that includes a few good pieces from renowned artists such as Picasso, Pollack and Frankenthaler. They also include a rare gallery of Indo-Pacific art. They had an special exhibit of non-Han dress attire which was also very interesting. There were definitely ample and informative descriptions of different pieces of work that highlighted key pieces of art and their background. Overall, the art was laid out very well and the interior design does not distract too much from the art itself. I would recommend this collection especially if you like the MET art collection in New York.
First its free! It is pretty big. Start on 4th and work your way down. Art work by the masters, Picasso, Van Gogh, Renoir, Hooper, etc.
Ive visited a good number of times in my life and their exhibitions are always interesting. Honestly art gives me a headache a good amount of the time and I still enjoy it. It’s right in the middle of things and it’s free. Go if you’re nearby and have a few hours to kill! Be wary of hours that change during different times of the year and with Yale events, but that goes for any university associated building of course.
Since I live here in New Haven, I stop in at the gallery almost once a week. And how can I not? Its a free museum boasting a large, world-class collection hailing from all throughout history and from all around the globe. No matter how many times I come here, I feel like I discover something new, be it a work I have overlooked or a piece of art that I have viewed before but finds a new way to speak to me.This is definitely a must-see if youre visiting the city. New Havens restaurant scene may be able to fill your body, but the Yale Univeristy Art Gallery will feed your spirit.
An excellent art gallery that you will find something new every time you go.
We took our nearly 7 year old granddaughter and she was also able to find things interested her in this art gallery. We were very surprised to realize that it was completely free. It was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday ️
We were absolutely stunned by the exhibition on so many floors and didnt expect anything like that at all. Let alone for free! We planned on paying the Art Gallery a quick visit during our short stay in New Haven and Yale but then stayed for over 2 hours, wandering around. We appreciated the variety of art and history we could admire and look at on several floors. We definitely recommend to go there and spend sufficient time to take it all in. We suppose the exhibitons are changing every now and then, so were not sure if it would make sense to talk about the specific exhibitions we saw around European, Native American and Asian culture.
This museum has an astounding collection—almost like a mini-Louvre. Best part: entry is free!
A great place for memorable experiences especially if your an Art appreciator.
I came here for a school project for art appreciation class. Having been in other art galleries, and from other countries, I didnt expect to love this place so much as I dont appreciate art as one should. This place opened my eyes. Every piece is week organized and spaces apart so you can devote time admiring art. Sections didnt get taken away to be dedicated to famous artists. Every piece got just as much attention as the other. And the staff. Such wonderful and cheerful people. They will help you in anyway they can, even if they dont know the answer, they will find it for you.I love being in and feeling old architecture. And this place is so pristine it feels like it has a soul.I meant to only stay till 6 pm or earlier. I ended up staying till closing!Im coming back when I have a full day off and will enjoy it even more. Thanks to the fantastic and cooperative staff for teaching, and helping me in everyway possible.
Awesome place, best museum I ever visited
Great day. Crazy to see gothic architecture so close to home.
I cant believe its free! Not even going to mention the paintings here because you have to see it to believe it!
Masterpiece after masterpiece in every room including Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper and Jackson Pollock.
It isa lovely place to visit beautiful inside and out
I love this museum. I have been 3 times, 1x/year. I love the organization of it; working ones way top-down is the best. Just great special collections each time Ive gone and really fun to recognize pieces that are permanent.
Lots of wonderful art to be seen here. A great cheap date! Parking is tricky here! The art gallery employees and matrons are very nice too!
Totally impressive and deserves more than just 2 hours (which is all the time I had). Will definitely be going back!!!
Not too large, but a very nice museum overall. The building itself is pretty interesting, architecturally. Considering the size of the place, there is a fairly wide array of art, ranging from 18th-19th century Asian and American art, to pieces from Greek and Roman antiquities. Its definitely a good place to spend a couple of hours. I would guess Van Goghs The Night Cafe is probably the most well known piece in the collection.
Exceeding my expectations. I visited many museums and galleries all over the world. This place is one of the best. Their collection of contemporary paintings is the best. They have the most collections of modern masters than any other place. Wow!!!
One of very first American art galleries. Everytime when Im visiting Connecticut, Im trying to go there for arts and good vibes. Main collection is amazing, but temporary exhibitions very lovely too. Pay attention to Classic European Art and Contemporary American artists.
What a beautiful gallery with an excellent collection of artwork from all over the world. The best part is that entry is free!
Beautiful place with a great selection of art from different centuries and different cultures. I enjoyed it a lot and recommend everyone to go there. Bring some time though...
My daughters and I visited for the first time and loved it. Employess were nice and helpful. The museum was clean and brightIt is located in a very convenient area in downtown New Haven.Good for all imo.
This free to the public gem on the Yale campus is not to be missed. Architecturally, the museum blends the old and the new in a maze-like like series of galleries. On display are works of high art as well as everyday objects. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Its too much for one visit; youll want to return.
Always free. Always worth the visit.
Awesome free museum with art from different eras and cultures. A great day date!
Beautiful architecture nice place for pictures
More than paintings on walls. This is a fantastic gallery full of historical artifacts.
I had a great time here. I think it’s worthy to spend some times here for the abundant collections. There is no admission fee which is quiet nice(You need to pay a lot for museums in Harvard University).
Nice collection, friendly staff, free entry!
Outstanding art gallery, free and that belongs to Yale University. Goes well along the free tour of this excellent university.
Excellent gallery with a wide variety of work on display and wonderful special exhibits. Right in downtown New Haven and walking distance from many fantastic restaurants, it is our favorite field trip destination. WHile waiting, you can cross the street to the School of Architecture Gallery which always has interesting work on exhibit.
An impressive collection of works of art that you would normally find in the best museums of the world! A must-see!
Amazing pieces of art and totally free!
It is smaller than the one in Harvard but I loved the artwork there and I loved walking there in general. Great architecture and vibe of the whole Yale campus. I would love to come back again...
Best art gallery you could go to. Easily beats famous New York, French, Italian, and all other galleries in both collection and atmosphere. The Yale gallery has one of, if not the definitive, best collections of art in the world. Don’t miss great collections of some of the most famous artists of their time, with works ranging from antiquity to modern. Despite this storied collection, the gallery is not crowded, the staff are incredibly kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. Not to mention the gallery is 100% FREE to anyone! Make sure to stop by the Trumbull gallery on the second floor and his grave on the first to thank him for his legacy requiring free admission to this amazing collection.
Absolutely loved this art gallery! The art is stunning and there something for everyone whether its contemporary or classical art.
It’s a fantastic museum.
Always great to go there!
Excellent collection in a really interesting old and repurposed space. Also free! I especially enjoyed the discussion exhibition and contemporary art gallery.
This museum has something for everyone! Anyone can go and have a great time! They also do amazing tours!
Beautiful place and very kindly people.
Great art and architecture. Still havent seen everything. Very big. Very cool.
A very good Fine Art Museum in the heart of New Haven CT. Free admission and an excellent place to spend. A few hours viewing paintings sculpture and folk art.
Are you in need of a little art, culture, and history? Well you will not be disappointed with this museum. It houses a lovely range of art and artifacts that should not be missed. The museum is in a great location with beautiful architecture everywhere. Parking was easy, there are tables outside where you can hangout with a meal, coffee, or ice cream from a nearby shop. When friends visit from out of town I will suggest a visit.
Wonderful museum. The collection has great range and exhibited beautifully
This museum was a real treat. The collection is very broad from medieval to modern and the exhibits well organized and notated. The location is right in the middle of downtown new haven with plenty of nearby parking. Overall a pleasant half day.
Wonderful place for people who loves art. Recommended 100%. The entrance is free. So go and Visit Connecticut with your family.
Amazing Gallery!! Great Collection and intimate galleries. One of my favorite Museums

Beautiful Museum, love to go every Sunday. Its a very nice and peaceful place to enjoy Incredible Art.
Wonderful space and inspiring collections and, it’s free! Thank you! Don’t forget the terrace up on the 4th floor.
There are many famous paintings in this museum such as Van Gogh, Monet and Cezzane. I enjoyed and so did my kids.
Best university art gallery ever - the micro met
I was pleasantly surprised by their collection which is both diverse and extensive. You can definitely spend a relaxed afternoon here.
Great collection! You can find at least one (sometimes even more than one) painting of each important artist from the XX and XXI century! Awesome
Amazing works with no crowd. Highly recommend the tour, which covered 3 works in an hour. We had really interesting discussions about them
It was thought inspiring, wealth of creative artifacts to leave nothing but the urge for return. Absolutelty amazing collection of work of arts dating to the first century.
Free knowledge transfer at the various museum
Lovely museum and its free. What more could you ask for.
Great art here. Its a wonderful cheap date. Parking is tricky though.
Amazing collection of authentic art from many different continents
Spacious art gallery that spans four floors, with an assortment of exhibits. Great, helpful staff to answer any questions.
