Really fun place to visit, and has quite an assortment of art from various periods/styles. they have a lot of events, be it geared towards families and children or professionals looking to attend a symposium. it’s worth looking into even if you’re not really an art person, there’s just such variety that you’re bound to find something interesting.there’s a storage room for your belongings and lockers that only require a quarter to loan, so your belongings are safe while you peruse the collections.
Great art museum inside Rutgers university. Its free to the public (though donations are welcome), and a great place to visit while walking around campus. The place is bigger than youd expect for a free museum, and the art in display is of good quality. Definitely a must see and worth the trip
They have some amazing pieces in here. Id lived in New Brunswick for about a year before I realized this gem was here. Its also free of charge, and I would highly recommend making a small donation as the art is actually quite extensive and very well kept. Highly recommend!
Friendly staff, beautiful halls.
A gem of a museum. This was our first visit. They offer many special events and exhibits. Will keep watching their website, and signed up for their posts via emails.
Was very apprehensive about coming here because it didnt seem like my kind of thing. But, I definitely had fun. There were some very interesting and fun exhibits throughout that made the experience great. Not to mention it was free entry!
The staff is friendly and the entire place is clean and quiet.
Very cool pieces are here. Liked it a lot. There is a lot of sculptures and paintings and everything is sectioned off by geography and time period.
Eclectic mix. Dual English and Spanish wall labels. Dimensionalism exhibition is must see. Free entry, closed Monday.
It has excellent collection of American and European arts across times and styles. My favorite is Art Nouveau with Kandinsky and Miro. I was also pleasantly surprised by large collection of Russian art, both modern and old.
This is one of Middlesex Countys best-kept secrets. Totally free (donations accepted--and given the experience well-earned). Kid-friendly, even for 6, 7, 8 yr olds (my kids ages when I first took them, youngest might even have been 5). Never crowded. Walking distance to Easton Ave (Thomas Sweet Ice Cream and many great restaurants--try Tacoria). And again, because it is free it is a great quick afternoon excursion with the kids. But even on those short trips it is clear that this museum has an amazing, well-curated collection, and I intend to go back without them to really take it all in. The special exhibits rotate (the current one is NOT kid friendly, but the staff warned me in advance so we stuck to the other areas that day, and there was still plenty to do.) They mix it up enough that there is enough variety and enough changes that we go back every four to six months.Note the staff is polite and friendly enough, but they definitely take their jobs seriously so dont get put off if they (gently) reprimand the kids (or you) for even an initial, minor infraction.
My daughters love this place. Very kid friendly and plenty of community activities.
Ive been to the Zimmerli more times than I can count, both on my own and with friends, and its never disappointed. Their art on display changes every so often, and the museum is so large that youll find pieces that youve missed the first time around. The staff is super knowledgeable and friendly. Give the cafe a shot if you have the chance, their 5 bean chili and cornbread is to die for.
This is a beautiful museum full of world-class exhibits. Its free and walkable from NJTransit.
Oh, this is such a lovely art museum! I wish it was bigger, or they had more in the temporary gallery (the two largest were closed last time we went to visit, but the smaller two had feminoir modernism and natural wildlife realism), but the permanent shows are so good! Particularly the 19th century European gallery and the American portraiture selection. If you especially like USSR art and commentary, this is a really good place to check out, as the largest gallery by far is a collection from the begining of to the fall of the Soviet Union.
This is such a hidden gem that really needs to get the recognition it deserves. The Zimmerli Art Museum is a beautifully kept art museum thats deceptively large and best of all, is completely free. The collection that was here at the time I came was quite varied and had some really cool, unique pieces. The collections are split into 4 or 5 areas and over 2 floors. The staff is friendly and the entire place is clean and quiet.Bottom line, this is one of the nicest art museums youll find in this area. Its as good as any paid suburban art museum, and again, its completely free. A must go.
What a great gallery, and we only got through about a third of it. Friendly staff.
Visited for newest viewing of Mario A. Robinsons painting. His work is lifelike and evokes emotion from every detail in brush strokes, location and subject. Visit his website to see his works in Plein Air Watercolor and more.
What a heartbreaking and well curated exhibition of non conformist Russian art.Mans inhumanity to man never ceases to amaze me. Its very inspiring that artists continue to create and inspire despite the risks and dire circumstances .Such a nice museum. The staff was very helpful. The other exhibits were also well done.
Its so much bigger and nicer on the inside than the outside would lead you to believe! Plus, its free.. definitely worth checking out.
Cool place to visit with kids on a lazy Sunday afternoon and its free too!! Thay do except donations
Free museum with rotating exhibits every half year. The hours are kind of inconvenient though and you cant have your bag with you in the exhibits.
This is a small free art museum. We went on a day they had a concert. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
Great museum! Plan it well! Takes longer than expected! I loved all exhibits except the Russian Wing..
A nice art museum. I was impressed by the collection of American artists. enjoyed seen the pieces by George Segal. wow.

This is a gem of a museum located in downtown New Brunswick. we always enjoy going there since they have one interesting exhibit after another.
Glad I finally visited this wonderful museum. Its first-rate.
Great little museum. Plenty of interest there, iincuding a world-class collection of Soviet dissident art...and its free (contributions accepted).
Awesome museum.... ny daughter wants to go again
Unpretentious, compact, and well-laid-out public university art museum with a nice petite cafe.
A beautiful exhibit of French lithographs, large and thorough and well documented. It appears to be quite a good quality museum.
Loved it! Def a great place to go on a date!
Free for Rutgers students, good exhibits and showcases.
The Zimmerli Art Museum is truly an incredible place, with the kind of art, artifacts, and even war memorabilia like journals and other writings, that will pull you in and engage you to the point where all youre really thinking about is walking around and taking it all in. It is a place to get absorbed, while you are learning a lot about many different artists and sculptors, and writers that you probably have never heard of. I wish I could remember more about it, but I went there 4 years ago, and I dont live on the East coast or anywhere near New Jersey, so I may never be back. But if I had to pick a museum I would like to revisit, it would be the Zimmerli Art Museum. Please avail yourself of it! Note that it is also on the campus of Rutgers University, which is lovely, with its own historical buildings and beautiful, lush lawns and gardens, so make sure that you walk around the campus as well as visiting the library while you are at the site. Obviously since you are back East, you would want to go in May or June, or early September. Its nice if you could go after college is out for the year, or before it starts up again in the fall. You will have a wonderful, relaxing day!
Amazing place! So much to see!
Came here with the kids one Saturday Afternoon. Unfortunately, there was a private event so we could only see 1/2 of the exhibits. We plan to go back and will update our review, once we see the rest of the museum.
Had a great time doing an art project with the kids
Great museum to visit when you are nearby.
Vast collection of Soviet nonconformist art was quite a surprise. Very impressive and well maintained space.
A hidden gem on College Ave campus whose permanent collection includes American art, childrens book illustrations, Japanese woodcuts, and works by Mason Gross alumni. From what I can tell, the docents are mostly volunteers from the local community, while the gallery guards are all work-study undergrads.Has a small cafe on the ground floor.
Great little art museum. ..very short walk from train station
Learned new things here. Enjoyed the French lithograph print today.
Nice university collection with some well known artists and some new discoveries
The Museum offers summer camp programs. Awesome experience with the kids.
Enjoyable. Friendly staff and interesting exhibits.
Huge collection of Russian art dominates the museum. There are also collections of American and European art. Downstairs are a few rooms containing changing exhibits of contemporary art. Overall, a very interesting museum.
Its basically arts museum maintained by Rutgers University. No entrance fee and free parking available.
