Stopped here after seeing several buildings labelled as Button Factory. Saw a sign for National Pearl Button Museum so had to stop and find out what this was all about. We had Mary guide us around. Well worth having a guide! She took us through the beginnings of the industry all thru the end of it and the changes towards plastic. Fascinating. Never knew there were so many fresh water mussels here, not to mention how big some of them were. Great information, and displays are well done. Be sure to also go upstairs and see a bit of the current industry of the area. What a gem to discover this unique and important place in history.
The Lady and gentlemen working there were super nice and informative the museum was clean and everything worked. Never thought I and my 13 year old daughter would enjoy a Button museum. Free addmision.. So please buy a scoop of buttons or buy something in the gift shop. Will go back thats how interesting it is.
Came here on a school field trip. Terry Eagle gave a brief presentation of the history of the pearl button factory. From its beginning to its demise. Did not realize the extensive historical influence this industry had on the growth of Muscatine. There are many items on display related to the pearl button manufacturing. There is a gift shop. Worth the trip. Call ahead and ask for a tour. Recommend!
So interesting! A treasure right under our noses! Very knowledgeable guide. We are planning a trip back to see more of it!
The history and quality exhibits are a delight for all ages ! Along with knowledgeable staff, make for an enjoyable visit ! Muscatine has a jewel, right downtown.
Wonderful history lesson not only in pearl buttons but the mussel population decline. The group of 5 of us stopped here after having visited the Quad Cities and were greeted by a friendly, knowledgeable guide who shared his passion on sharing a bit of American History. Also met the young man who is responsible for painting a number of murals in Muscatine as well as who makes jewelry from discarded pearl buttons. Well worth the stop.
This is a 5 stars plus experience! Angie was a wonderful tour guide, so knowledgeable. Thanks! Terry was most thoughtful and very generous with knowledge, information and sharing his history and that of pearls. Thanks! Chris was an inspiration. Thanks! We were so very glad we worked this side trip into our travels.
Large informative museum about the history of the button industries rise and fall. Many great pictures and equipment in the building. People working there were very helpful. The upstairs has a lot of displays of other businesses in the town. My wife and I were very impressed.
Fascinating place. I grew up along the river seeing millions of those punched out shells. Kelly gave us a great education. The collection of buttons is splendid.
Terry was very knowledgeable on the museum, a very good speaker. The ladies were very impressed. Terry took very good care of us Red Batters. Angie you are the woman behind the man.
How Lucky Muscatine is to have this Treasure in Our Town! Worth the Travel!
Definitely a jewel along the river. Enjoyed every minute of our visit. The guide was very engaging .
Very interesting, tour provided by Mr Eagle was awesome covers early days of shell fishing to present times
Okay - so, personally, I wouldnt give this five stars, since Im not into the history of buttons, but Im willing to bet that this is the best and most comprehensive museum on the history of pearl/shell button making in the entire world. It was an interesting little stop on our trip, and the person manning the information desk was really knowledgeable and _very_ enthusiastic. Its a good place to stop for info on the general history of Muscatine as well. It was probably at least 4 stars, even without being that interested in the main subject.
I really enjoyed learning the history of the pearl buttons in my moms old button box. Take time for the guided tour, its only 20 minutes.
I enjoyed seeing how buttons were made. And see how the color got in the bottoms.
Guided tour was wonderful. Very worthwhile the stop.
This place is very informational, they have activities for young and old. A very cool place to check out.

Wonderful piece of history. Not to be missed.
Mostly, the Pearl Button Museum. Great history about the pearl button industry on the Mississippi River. I got a tour past visiting hours, from a delightful, knowledgable host. Do yourself a favor, and visit. Some friends made fun of me when I said I visited the Pearl Button Museum, but theyre not so bright.
Interesting museum. We had a great guide and he answered all our questions. Upstairs has some displays about local businesses.
Lived there all my life and never went in, my son in law was playing with a band there. It was very interesting
Very interesting learning about the pearl button industry. The second floor has more about modern industry and it was interesting as well. Extremely nice and knowledgeable staff.
Very rich in history, a must if your in town.
Fantastic history, beautifully displayed, with a guided tour to boot! Well done!
