Keep in mind that you need to buy an authorization ticket to get into this area. Go to the EBMUD website to do so. However, there are no gates nor guards to stop you from going in. And plenty of parking is available at no charge. The main hiking area is the Upper San Leandro Reservoir, with Kings Canyon Loop Trail being the largest trail for hiking. I ended up hiking the whole trail which is 6.4 miles according to Alltrails. But my iPhone said that I had hiked 8.4 miles. In reality you will end up hiking more. If I knew more about this trail beforehand I would have just hiked the west and south side of the trail. This is the side where the water is nearest to you. It is also more scenic and theres more shade. When you see the sign Rancho Laguna Park is where the west side of the loop starts. In other words start the loop anticlockwise as supposed to clockwise.I would avoid hiking the east side because it is mostly open. It is a lot steeper. It is soily. It is dusty. And hardly scenic. However, if you are the adventurous type then see the whole trail for yourself.By the way the lake is completely fenced with wires. It is not accessible to the public. So you will not be able to soak your feet there. However, there is a section open to the public about half a mile from the entrance. This is probably the most scenic section of the trail. If you want a break and sit down, you wont find many benches to sit down. As a matter of fact I would not even think about taking a break. Because the minute you stop youll get attacked by mosquitoes and flies.I rate the west and south side 5/5.The east side 1/5.
Nice trails under the trees... Good for relaxing walks in the nature
Heavily trafficked EBMUD trailhead. Very nice trails. EBMUD permit required ($10 annual fee - quickly available online).
This can be a secluded place for your peace of mind. Talk redwoods, oaks and fern groves.
Great place for a short or long hike. Good place for birdwatching.
Great trails and beautiful scenery. Ample parking although the restroom onsite isnt the best.
Excellent trails with varying difficulty. Does anyone know if it is possible to stay overnight?
Spectacular vistas and amazing walking trails.
Great place for a hike !
Kings Canyon trail is 6.7 mile loop. Mostly it’s flat except elevation for 0.5 mile. Not too bad. It’s my dog’s fab trail. I see many people(me included) leave friendly dogs unleashed.
Absolutely beautiful and serene!
Hiked Kings Canyon and then looped up the mountain, lots of ups and downs so a good workout. But at the end the trail connected to a road which we followed and the fence was closed! The sun was going to set soon so we had to hop the fence. I injured myself a bit. So other than the confusing end of the trail, a beautiful hike, though you need a yearly EBMUD pass to hike it.
Great trails! Few people. The EBMUD trail pass is worth every penny!
Great place to hike
Beautiful place to take a walk. Lots of acorn woodpeckers, waterbirds (ducks, geese, herons), and others. Bring your binoculars.
Great area to start a hike to Redwood Park in Oakland. You must have an EBMUD trail permit as this is their watershed land. Still green in late May of 2019. Traverse to lush old growth redwoods and ferns and other plant and the wildflowers on the path to the EB Regional Park boundary at the ridge about 1.5 miles from the trailhead.
Amazing geological area. Wonderful vistas along the lake
This place has such great trails. They are very well taken care of. Be sure to get your pass and carry it with you
Good spot for the quick 1 mile loop or the much longer 6.5 loop! If you go for the longer (King’s Canyon) I recommend doing it counter clockwise and getting the big hill out of the way first. This spot connects to a lot of trails and a lot of those trails allow dogs (on leash).
Stay away, nothing to see here
Great places to sit at night
Many interesting routes for bird watching.
Its an amazing place with a long hiking trail if you go to the left, theres a short loop to the right. Also you can get here from redwood park, but its a very long hike to do so. It does say you need a permit but every time Ive been most people do not have permits. It connects to the upper San Leandro reservoir so theres this huge lake and migratory birds. Excellent bird watching, bathroom facilities as well.
I thought it was pretty Rediculous..you have to get a permit from a different location just to hike and no fishing, I can understand the need for a permit and no swimming or boats because it is for drinking water but to disallow fishing because of the risk of contamination or whatever bs reason given is blasphemy when you look at Google Earth and see all the Vineyards that contribute to the run off water full of pesticides and fertilizer into the lake.. par for the course California, destroy natural environments to make money and call it protected
Great place to stage a hike. Get an EBMUD trail pass and choose from many trail options. Theres a few short flat ones, or do loops for extra difficulty. Lots of wildlife, watch out for poison oak, and parking is easy.
So many birds at the reservoir!
Beautiful area to walk, though it can get quite a bit muddy after a rain. A food number of people walk here, but you more or less have the trail to yourself most of the time.
Hella peaceful
Great views. Some challenging hills.
Got so shmacked great shmack
Good hiking, but youre supposed to get a permit from EBMUD. Hard to reach from Moraga now that the bridge is closed.
Great place to relax and while away the time a few hours
Many wild flowers
Parking lot and restroom
Hidden place right off 680 and Irvington district!!!!
Permit required
