5 stars only presuming its fantastic. The main reason for coming to Monterey was that I wanted to visit the Dali Museum. Google times showed it would be open. Sept. 14th, 15th, its closed until further notice because of Covid. So, if youre planning for a near future visit, call or contact them in advance.
This was a surprising find. Im so glad I stumbled upon this expo while in town. Although the collection effectively consists of Dalis b-sides, they are still undoubtedly worth seeing. You can see inspirations for his other enigmatic works, and some works that I frankly had no idea he created. Theres a lot to see. Anyone who likes surrealism should see this collection, for sure. Theres also a local artist installment on the second floor.
The museum is fascinating I really love it and I’ve been back three times you really need to go if you’re a fan of Salvador dolly even if you’re not well worth it like Disneyland can’t see it all in one trip.
Paint night was super fun! The instructor was very clear and relaxing, all the participants did an amazing job with making their artwork their own. The museum itself is full of high quality prints and a few statues. Plenty to look at, and well lit/layed out so youre actually able to see everything.
I had a great time here and look forward to visiting again as many times as I can. My aunt took me here because she knows I love art and Salvador Dali. I found it incredibly interesting how you see his creations differently every time you look at them. Nice assortment of framed art, canvases and sculptures. I really loved the entire exhibit, definitely worth seeing if youre an artistic soul!
This is a really fun place. Its a surprisingly large museum that is well organized. Nothing there is original but still you can see a lot of this prolific artists work displayed how it was meant to be seen. This is especially nice for the series works. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They also have a gallery that features a different local artist each month. There is a small gift shop with unusual gifts that are very reasonable. The best plan is to go during one of their special events. They have painting and print making workshops as well as Dali Alley every month.
This place is amazing! Extensive Salvador Dali collection. Definitely worth the price of admission. I could have spent 4 hours admiring his works. Take the guided tour when offered, staff is passionately knowledgeable, enhancing the experience greatly.
This is gallery is worth visiting if you are in the area but its not worth visiting specifically if you live any distance away. The gallery is laid out in an odd way. Partially because of the space it resides it but it also its just laid out more like a commercial gallery than a museum exhibit. The art is crammed wall to wall frame to frame. Its great they have so many works on display but this isnt really the best or most modern way to display art since its kind of overwhelming. Especially given the content and style in this case.Almost all the art was framed in large gaudy gold frames the kind that can be found in your average art store and it distracts from the art itself.Ignoring all that their is a great collection of many of Dalis less typical works mostly from his time in Monterrey. They are great to see but almost all of them are prints.Overall its worth visiting and there are a lot of other sites in the area, so if you happen to be nearby its worth a stop.
Lots to see! Give yourself plenty of time for all the art and for the movies.
Nice collection of Dali works from the 40s when they escaped to the US and later years in a nice seaside setting of Monterey. Worth seeing!
Some real interesting pieces here. Youll learn a thing or two about Dali
10/10 will visit again - Went to see the incredible and surreal Salvador Dali exhibit, and was beyond satisfied and gratified with delightful service.Amazing collection, super friendly staff.
What a selection of Dali art. This is the largest privately owned Dali collection in the US. Why in Monterey? Dali spent six years here. Come find out about where he lived and about the 17 mile drive story. If you’re lucky Mike from Nitro Cycle will be there serving nitro brew or a mocha for a nominal fee. Definitely worth stopping in.
Supurb! We decided to spend some time here before getting lunch on the Fishermans wharf. I wasnt sure what to expect, but I was completely surprised by the size and variety of the collection. Dont forget to check out the black light room!
Simply incredible! So many new styles of his to experience and stunning representations of Dalis vision of life.any fan of Dali has to go here!!
Amazing collection and nice variety. I especially loved the Dali sculptures! I highly recommend to visit.
Great way to spend an afternoon! Lovely team onsite. Definitely worth the stop!
A great unique collection of his work. Plan for three hours or more if you really want to take it all in.
The Exhibit was nice.Unfortunately...no restrooms although it has signs/arrows to the restrooms but they were locked staff just shrugged their shoulders. One other thing I can think of is get rid of the plug-in room freshers...it smelled like I was standing next to a guy who dumped cologne all over him it really is hard to get into the artwork because of the smell let alone when you really have to pee and theres no bathroom. Just saying.
Interesting museum with 2 floors and a Blacklight room. There are many art pieces with the description however some of them have only the title and not the description.Price for 2 people was $40.00
Amazing exhibit. Just stumbled across it. Catalina (hope I spelled that way right) was awesome, helped me get the last print of an awesome piece!
The Dali Expo in Monterey is an incredible collection of Dali originals and lithographs. Some of the pieces are unique to this museum, so, even if you have seen other Dali Museums ( and I have) this is a must see on the west coast. The mountings and hangings are done incredibly well, and show off the works nicely. The block prints are things I have not seen before, and with the help of a docent ( and I recommend that) stories abound about the history of the pieces and the fascination of Dali and his works are wonderful. The museum is located above the tunnel everyone goes through, just past the aquarium. So! Check the map before driving to make it easy on the upper street. Anyway your have been given the tip, as it is easy to drive around a lot and well - lets eliminate that frustration first. Enjoy the museum, it was a real jaw dropper for us..
Worth every penny. Take time between rooms to breath as is gets overwhelming quickly!
Iconic and original Salvador Dali pieces
Amazing collection of Dali works. I left cery inspired. Staff were helpful. Worth the price, if youre a Dali-lover, or even half-interested in his art( even if youre a penny pincher). Went in January and it was sooo cold in the museum.
This place is amazing. Definitely a hidden gem. Highly recommended.
I can see his art. I have space and time to contemplate each one. Easy in a wheelchair too.
Thank you so much for sharing this stunning collection. The rest of my group went to the course today but I came to see to the museum. I spent two hours essentially by myself with Dali. The Dante Cantos left me in tears. I left it and sat on the beautiful balcony. It was a half hour before I could resume. Again thank you so much for sharing this fantastic collection.
What a hidden gem! Staff was very helpful and helped me maximize my time.
Not only do they have a wonderful collection, but I learned so much about this wonderful and eclectic man. Highly recommended for anyone with any interest in Dali or his work.
Mr & Mrs Dimitry know their Dali. Its a pity Mr cant play football to save The USSR
My wife and I were visiting from Canada and stopped in at the museum and learned a great deal about Dali. I personally had no idea he was even from the area. The front desk staff were very friendly and professional and inside the gallery itself was beautiful. I enjoyed seeing much of the works on the walls, but I didnt know he did sculpting work as well - I just thought it was a very interesting and fun place to stop in to see while we were visiting the Wharf area.
Very interesting artwork that is Dali himself of course. The exhibit is set up really well. Beautiful marina location.
Wonderful exhibit with hundreds of captivating pieces. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
This museum was killer! The guide was super knowledgeable and friendly and the works were incredible.
An amazing series of collections of original Dali lithographs. A must see for any Dali fan!
Yes, it is mostly lithographs, but its a cool collection and a wonderful tribute since the artist spent time in the area. The exhibit is beautifully laid out and the staff were very friendly. We did save some money with a groupon.
This is just a collection of lithographs - which is so beyond bizarre. You can get more from a book about Dali - including the accurate date of the original artwork. Youll learn very little about Dali, which is a shame. Seriously, if youre a fan of art and the least bit knowledgeable, do not waste your time or money.
Dali fan? This Expo is pretty cool. Ive been to Dalis museum in St. Petersburg Florida. His art moves around to all his exhibits, so you never know what youll find, but thats the best part!
A compact building with two floors of rooms densely packed with Dali artwork, some pieces trippier than others.
If you are a Dali fan you must visit the exhibition to check out some of his work while in Monterey
A great little museum for anytime who is a fan of Dalis art.
Hundreds of Dali pieces. Hours of enjoyment.
Were both big Dali fans and have been wanting to come forever and snagged a Groupon although were both the types to want to support art I think it was the kick in the pants we needed. My docked star is because the presentation of several pieces was haphazard (and come on Dalis pieces have enough going on), I mean this in terms of cracked glass over pieces, broken frames, hung crooked or missing the description tiles. As well as, we were kind of surprised but the cleanliness of the place. Maybe because it was a weekend but it didnt look like itd been vacuumed in awhile, random trash, lots of things were sticky. Im not a germaphobe but it just kind of took away from the experience. One other super gentle suggestion would be places to sit. I love to sit and let my mind wander and look at the art like we could at the Dali museum in St. Petersburg. Staff was friendly and all in all it was a great collection.
Beautiful. A must for art lovers.
Excellent exhibit. Large collection. A must for any Dali fan.
Amazing place. We spent over 2 hours and would have stayed longer if we hadnt gotten hungry.
These are lithographs and not original Dali pieces. The price, $20 seems like the right price range for an exhibit like this. It was small even with 2 floors and you end up walking into a lot of other people. The lighting could also be worked on a bit. Staff was super friendly though.
A really fascinating collection. I was most impressed with his lithographs from the 50s and 60s. Dozens and dozens of unique and compelling illustrations. Their compositions and content were quite striking.
Amazing. I left here truly inspired. Huge thank you to the staff for their kindness and passion, and to the owners for providing such a sacred space.
I was impressed to find out that Dali lived in Monterey bay. Entertaining exposition.
It was wondering the art was very different but I really liked it
It was a nice place with plenty of room for people to move around. There were a lot of pictures to look at. It is cool that you can leave and come back within the same day.
Surprisingly ample display of an enormous private collection of works by Salvador Dalí, the famous Spanish Surrealist artist. In fact, so much is on display that it makes the presentation look somewhat cramped, but not distractingly so. If you want a quick immersion for a decent grasp of his work, this is a very pleasant venue. Plus: located right next to Montereys Fishermans Wharf, so it makes for a wonderful outing. Highly recommended.
Lots of prints. Worth a look. Go for the Groupon to save!
It was beutifull and fun and even if you dont like dali then theres other art but i wish there was a larger gift shop
An amazing collection of Dali works! Highly recommend the Dali museum if you are in the area.
Great exhibit displaying some well-known works as well as plenty of title jewels, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A modern art lovers dream. A variety of installations that examine different phases of Dalis storied career with a spotlight on his time in Californias central coast. There are other exhibits as well that help round out a real appreciation for the work and legacy of Dali.
Loved it, been twice and will get membership so I can save money! Dali is so inspiring. Feel so blessed that we have his wonderful works available any time to view. He was a genius!
I was extremely disappointed that most of the pieces on display were lithographs, not original paintings.
Very interesting. I was disappointed it was all lithographs, numbered and signed yes, but no original oils. $20 to enter, I felt cheated.
Great collection of Dali. Jeremy at the front desk incredibly knowledgeable about the collection as well as knowing intimate stories of the artist as well as his time in this area.
There are many great pieces on display at this expo and I would definitely just seeing them if your like art and/or Dali.
Salvador Dali paintings is my favorite library( At my home) of Books that I have. I was so happy and excited when you came to Our area. I havent been to the Museum of Fine Arts and a Dali Art Collection Thank you Joy Bridges
Very nice and interesting museum.
Absolutely amazing. My new favorite pan. Dali was incredible.
Docent was not incredibly knowledgeable, but that was kind of alright because my fiancee and I are huge Dalí fans and didnt need a guide or extra info. The amount of art on hand was awe-inspiring.
It was alright, I didnt find this collection of Dali work too interesting. A lot of ink work with watercolor. The museum space and workers were lovely.
Wonderful Exhibit. Very well layed out and clean! All his works in chronological order.
Fabulous Festival for All Souls Day
THIS MUSEUM IS CLOSED. MY POPS AND I TRAVELLED OUT HERE TO SEE THE MUSEUM ONLY TO FIND OUT THEY ARENT OPEN. THERE IS BASICALLY NO INFO ABOUT THE MUSEUM BEING CLOSED ONLINE. HUGE BUMMER. I WOULD RECCOMEND THAT DALI17 FIXES THEIR WEBSITE WHICH THEY ALSO INFORMED US THEY NO LONGER HAVE CONTROL OF. WISH I COULD HAVE SEEN THE ARTWORK. :/
Very nice collection of lithographs I was hoping for more originals but still very nice to visit
It was ok I feel like they could do more with it
I was pleasantly surprised to find this museum. Ive been to the Dali Museum in Paris as well. The art here is mostly not the big well known pieces like they have in Paris, that makes this exhibit interesting. Much of what they had was unknown to me. The biggest shortcoming was the restroom. It was outside of, but adjacent to, the museum. And FILTHY! Im not sqeemish, but I do think a business should take some responsibility for the restroom they rely on for the comfort of their customers. I couldnt use it. It smelled and had obviously not been cleaned.
Bacchanalia Ltd. was invited to serve concessions during The Erotic Eclectics performance of Dali XXX last weekend. We found the staff upbeat, hospitable, and fun. The renovation of the old Maritime Museum makes excellent use the buildings space. It is at once grand, simple, elegant, and spacious. Yet, it isnt cold. Its a place you would want to hang out in, alone or as part of a 200+ person crowd, which it will accommodate easily. The museums central location makes it perfect for executing their mission. The goal is to draw a lively young crowd by offering a variety of art-centeic events. By showcasing local talent, (as Dali was, unbeknownst to me) from all genres, Dali 17 permeates the local art scene with diversity. This kind of art in motion approach frees art from the walls, bringing it alive in a 3D breath of much needed inspiration. Salvador Dali would approve!!
Amazing! I spent 3 hours here and it felt like a single minute. So much to see. An absolute must.
The big surprise was learning that Dali lived and worked in Monterey for the better part of the 1940s. Apparently, he was very involved in the local art scene, including helping to jury competitive art exhibitions for high school students. But dont come expecting to see his better known works; this collection highlights lesser known projects, the work he did here, and his connection to the area. And, frankly, it looks like the entire collection is on display, the frames are laid out with very little space between them and they cover all of the wall space, and here is also not a lot of exposition, explaining the difference between one set of images and the next, so the visual experience can be quite overwhelming. Its a lot to take in.But just knowing that a local resouces like this exists makes me want to learn more about Dali and his work. The staff person who sold tickets was very helpful and very nice.
This is a tough place to review. Dali is...well, hes Dali. And the place is ALL Dali. But its Dali lacking context. Dali lacking snap, and verve, because when EVERYTHING is Dali, Dali becomes the norm. And normal is NOT Dali. It becomes drab, and I began to feel like his drooping clocks, tired of the passing of the time, at least there, anymore.
I guess if you are artsy fartsy you would love Dalis art. But for the average observer, there is only so much abstract genitalia one person can stand to look at. It is great that that it has all of Dalis art in one place and I did like his Israel pieces, but personally Im not a fan of Dalis style.
Doesnt have any really famous works but it does have a lot of interesting works. Many from commissions to create illistrations of books. My favorite was his reproduction of every canto of Dantes Divine Comedy
Tourist trap/borderline fraudulent operation. Not a single museum level item of art in the building. Take a look at the other negative reviews from people with a little knowledge to recognize the scam that is going on.
We spent hours here gazing into the abyss of the colors and shapes. Amazing place, truly
There was a lot about Salvidor Dali that I didnt know. Cool museum and collection.
Dali lived on the original 17 mile drive in the 1940s, so the museum i dedicated to him. Many of the pieces were lithographs of Dali paintings, and not good ones at that. I watched a documentary in the theater. I had expected it would be about his technique and career, but it was all about his personal behavior. He was a terrible sexual predictor. You can choose to excuse his behavior as being due to the sexual revolution, but I dont think that excuses how he manipulated young men with his fame. After 20 minutes of watching this, I had an intense, why the heck am I still watching this? reaction, and returned to looking at the art.
Some weird stuff in there. Worth the price
An amazing place for an amazing artist, a journey through his life, experiences and inspiration.
Beautiful building in a perfect location. Many Dali works of engraving and litho work. No paintings or other originals that I could see.
Good and very interesting. We had a failed to show guide which causes me to not give another star. They wouldnt make arrangement for us to visit again.
Amazing service by the entire staff. Highly recommend.
Very cool to see works you normally would not. Commissions for books, exhibition. Very cool.
Loved the staff was very helpful. Was excited to see the lens for point sur lighthouse.
