The area was cool and we enjoyed walking around. Parking was limited and the visitor center was closed even though it said online that it was open. But all in all, it was fun to go to.
Great area to see fireworks on the 4th of July
I visited the lock & dam to see Surface” by Aaron Dysart, a spectacular light show and it was awesome--put on by Northern Spark. Light show or no, the locks are amazing! Dysart describes them as a 5 story building on its side. Portrait vs. Landscape. I went back a week later for Andrea Carlsons Spirit Island piece. It was very interesting, too. More traditional presentation the was projected on one side of the locks.
Good place for short stop. Though, hours for the tour are pretty limited. No parking at the visitor center, but 2 hr parking (free) is at the end of the road, just five minutes away.
My husband and I visited the lock and dam Visitors Center as part of Doors Open Minneapolis. The outdoor catwalk, which is usually closed to visitors, was open for the event. We could feel the spray from the falls and had access to photograph from heretofore unknown angles. Highly recommend as the power of the falls inspire awe. The staff was very knowledgeable about the history of the falls, which was a monumental engineering project.
Always the best! Great view and lovely National park staff and Rangers! Great teamwork with the Corps and Mississippi park Connection too!
Its an interesting lesson on engineering and the history of the city. The ranger was awesome and took us out on the lock, even though there was loud work being done. The junior ranger program was good for the size of the sight and even has a special badge. There was an entomologist on site and she answered all our questions for quite sometime. Plus they have six free parking spaces!
Reopen the lock to boaters please. One of the finest ways to see a big Metro area is from the river that passes through it. Anyone who has ever passed through the city by boat can appreciate our beautiful cities from a unique perspective. The Coon Rapids Dam which is only a few miles up River would be a much better place to try to stop invasive fish species.
It is close in winter, so I guess I need to come back in summer!
Very interesting information about the Mississippi. The rangers know pretty much everything about the history of the St Anthony Falls and locks. Some obscure history I never knew. You could do pretty much anything you wanted back in the early days. Also, the falls slowly moved to where they are now.
This place is awesome. Just watch out for them segway tours. Its beautiful around this area. Lots to explore and just take in. Theres lots to see, tons of arts, and people doing interesting things. Walk around or bike youll enjoy it. Driving gets a bit confusing if you not used to the area but for the most part if you have a GPS youll be fine.
This is a hidden Gem with the lock no longer in use since 2015. Ranger Matthews and staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. When we visited there were only 3 guided tours led by a Park Ranger. Make sure you call in advance to verify tour times! Ask the park visitor center for a parking pass. This is an excellent stop for the whole family!
Excited we had a park ranger for the tour.
Very interesting to take the tour and learn about the lock and dam system. They actually let you walk across the lock gates to the falls and take pics!! Worth the stop and free!!
Great view. Small visitor building you can cover in minutes. Staff was friendly. Enjoyed the stop
They should post here that they are only open between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
I couldnt find a way in, but the falls are cool
First time to visit this place. Had a great tour from park ranger Forest. He was really knowledgeable and explained the history of the luck and dam. Great activity for large or small groups.
Come in summer for a tour.
I would so love to take my Kayak over the falls...being it the last item on my bucket list. The 1.8 mile walk around the falls was beautiful and quite informative.
Interesting and not crowded.
Tours on the hour from 11am to 3 pm. Lots to do in the immediate area. Great fall activity. Bring the kids!
Beautiful place seen a few eagles
Very informational tour offered by the national park services.
The view is beautiful from the Stone Arch bridge
