Went there on vacation with my bestie to experience some Swedish culture. This place knocked my socks off!!! From the coffee, lunch and tour to the gift shop and knowledgeable staff. We spoke to several volunteers who had so much info to share. We spent several hours there and finished the day with some amazing coffee. This is a must see. Absolutely beautiful!
Always a fun experience. The museum was closed this time (Covid ordered), but the gift shop was still open. They have great Scandinavia gifts and a beautiful facility.
Our visit today was great and really comfortable with the COVID precautions. The museum has done a wonderful job with the holiday decorations and the spacing of the exhibits. We also were impressed with the museum volunteers and the information communicated.
Always clever and inspiring. I love this tree idea...so important to remember what we DO have to be grateful for instead of worrying about what we are missing right now. Plus ...a giant dala horse!!!
Had a great time here! The mansion is beautiful and was worth the visit alone. Lots of areas to walk - went on Sunday at 4pm, pretty much had the place to ourselves to roam around. Friendly staff, especially the nice man who showed us around and told us a bit about the history of the place. Had a great time!
As a fine art photographer - the Swedish House Institute is an absolute favorite venue for me to shoot weddings at! It is truly a space where I know I will be able to create jaw dropping photos....intricate details, a plethora of natural light, gardens that are just stunning, and a diversity of locations throughout the property make it perfect for weddings! On top of the beauty of the venue itself...the team at the Swedish House is also absolutely delightful to work with!
This was a fantastic experience that I recommend for all! The craftsmanship of this home is breathtaking and it was a fantastic experience all around. I also recommend going around lunch and getting their meatballs (they were amazing). Its a good 2-3 hour endeavor so make sure to space a little time.
First time visit: Good covid practices. Fall 2020 quilt exhibit on the Black Civil Rights movement is remarkable and worth the visit. Outdoor patio seating with fun, tasty cuisine. Beautiful exhibits that are riding with the times - current pen/ink drawings, contemporary design mixed with original architecture. You need to get a ticket online first. There is a free gallery exhibit, so you can eat and see it for free. The shop is Swedish adorable, with lots of great gifts. Worth the admission cost.
Fun and enriching place to visit. A lot of history and stories of the Turnblad family who once called this their home. Beautiful and well thought out hand carved wood throughout the entire house and imported porcelain fireplaces! There are 3 floors and a lot to explore. They have very knowledgeable guides and a really nice gift shop as well. Varied special Swedish heritage exhibits are featured year round. Ample parking available and easy to get to.
Really a neat place to go learn a little bit of Swedish history, more specifically Vikings and those type a fellas (and ladies, of course...) I just LOVED the ornate decorations, intricate woodwork, and all the little cool details everywhere. We were here for a financial-type meeting and dinner/drinks with about a hundred other MFs, and the self-guided tour around the property and buildings was definitely worth checking out, if youre so inclined... Recommended!
Came before COVID, was very cool! Educational, relaxing, and great experience!
Great place to visit during the holidays whether you are Scandinavian or not. Come early to get a parking place as it’s crowded and the lot is small. We visited on the 1st Sunday in December. Wonderful craftsmanship throughout the mansion. Live music upstairs in the ballroom. Treats for purchase on the lower level. Quality handcrafted and traditional gift items for sale in the craft area upstairs as well as the gift shop.
As Minneapolis visitors, we’ve been driving past this gorgeous building a few times and decided to finally give it a shot. It goes without saying we weren’t disappointed. As being born 100 miles away from Finland and studying there for a while, I appreciate all the Scandinavian things and its culture. It was nice to see familiar things at the American-Swedish Institute’s Store, but more importantly - touring the mansion was a great experience. Every room had beautiful decorations. Some of them, not all of them, were original. However, a lot of items were created by modern artists and a few rooms looked a little empty. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our time exploring the mansion and took some nice pictures. It also has a cafeteria and a museum store that contains items from Norway, Sweden, Finland, and even Iceland. The institute is a great place to visit for families, couples, or singles and I’d say it will take around 2 hours to check out all the floors and the store. A huge parking lot is onsite and free!
One of my favorite places to visit in Minneapolis. The historic Turnbull building is absolutely gorgeous, but the exhibits are what really make the Institute. Lots of activities, classes, and and one of the best gift shops in the city. Don’t forget to have a bite at the FIka café! If you are into Scandinavian, visit here!
Beautiful museum featuring art, historical features and kids areas. Cute gift shop and a nice cafe. Ample free parking. Very thoughtfully designed. They have both temporary and permanent exhibits so its a place you could return to every so often. My kids (10 and 1.5) and I spent over two hours there and all had a blast.
We enjoyed everything. Best were the demonstrations of weaving, carding, knitting, etc. Oh, and EVERYTHING was wonderful. Lots of room for lots of people. Mansion was amazing!!! Great staff, full of info. and friendly. Beautifully presented. Loved the cafe. My salmon was to die for. Bought fun and historical cultural things in gift store. Thanks!♡♡♡
Wonderful museum. The children’s room is always really fun with books, dress up, etc. Love the gift shop too!
This place is just magnificent. The building is amazing, the history is fascinating, the art displays are interesting.Plus, in the adjacent new wing, there is food and drink, a nice gift shop, and a lovely courtyard.Check the schedule for weekly cultural events and family activities.Highly recommended.
Staff is beyond words helpful and informative. There is so much to see!
Ate at the restaurant and bought some great Christmas presents at their gift store.
We had a great time earlier this year and I would have no issues going back with the rest of my family.
I have loved this place for so many years. The house is beautiful especially at Christmas. The food is incredible. You can find really unique gifts at the gift store. And they also do a really good job with weddings. Recently attended a friends wedding here and the venue was beyond beautiful and staff were super friendly and helpful.
The American Swedish Institute is an ornate example of turn of the century Swedish architecture. Regardless of the exhibits being shown, the building itself is delightful to wander around in, and imagine the lives it used to host.
The ASI is always a cool mix of both modern and historical. Located in the Turnbald mansion with a modern addition, the museum strikes the right balance of preserving the Swedish historical past of Minnesota and integrating it with relevant connections to modern-day Scandinavia. They have Innovative artist exhibits, a great restaurant, and lots of interesting events. Children are welcomed and theres even a floor just for them. Plus if youre a member of The Walker Art Center you get reciprocity in your membership. I would highly recommend and afternoon spent here.
A great display of Swedish heritage in modern Minneapolis, equipped with a full-on restaurant that also does fika, and authentic goods in the gift shop. The house itself is adorned with Swedish-style decor and is reminiscent of the beauty of Sweden itself.
Came for the annual winter solstice and enchanted forest. A great experience every year!
Try to visit this place every year to see what they have new. The staff is great, and the displays are fantastic. It is like a step back in time.
Went there for a wedding, the weather cooperated, outdoors in front of the mansion with all the trees in full bloom. Couldnt ask for a more perfect day. After the ceremony we toured the building on our own, then had a great meal.
Amazing experience. Beautiful mansion with easy access to all areas by stair or elevator. Top floor has an awesome space for kids. The food was also spectacular. A great day trip for anyone interested.
This place is always a fun visit. Its an indoor tour of a magnificent home. The architecture is old world hand carved work. They offer food, exhibits, and a gift shop. Be sure to check the website to see what events they have coming up!
A hidden gem in Minneapolis. When you visit be sure to include a stop at their restaurant, Fika. We had beet salad, salmon salad, the cardamon roll, and the sorrell cake dessert. The cream ginger and the cream cinnamon beverages were delightful. All the food has a delicate balance of essential flavors that please the palate. Not over sweetened and intensely concentrated on the fruit purees.
Very interesting museum inside Turnblad Mansion featuring Scandinavian-holiday-themed rooms. Fila offers nice Swedish meals, and the gift shop is lovely as well.
This is one of my favorite places to visit. The amount of human crafted work that went into the details of the mansion are awesome. Fun they change up the decor to match themes and seasons. The piano room is my second favorite, the hearth type rooms are my favorite.
This is a really nice place to visit. The exhibit is worth seeing. The gather outside was nice as well. I would definitely recommend the tour to hear the history behind the art pieces.
It is an amazing house! We saw the Vikings Begin exhibit and it was fantastic! I definitely recommend it!
This is an underated gem in the twin cities. The woodworking and architectural features on display are mind blowing. Make time to go here - you wont regret it
Striking modern structure attached to a Swedish immigrants mansion. The buildingsHave the clever attached bridge from the institute.to the mansion that Minnesota is so good at adding.Cafe was very busy and felt like a destination for the food alone. Gift shop had the Nordic and scandinavian offerings.See the bowl exhibit and all the small, yet worthy exhibit offerings.Enjoyable time and a great regional treat.
A piece of Minnesotan and Swedish history tucked into the cities. A great place to get a glimpse into Swedish culture in Minnesotas early years and the architectural influence it had on the design of the mansion. Be sure to get some Swedish meatballs at the cafe!
Such an amazing place! There is so much to explore here. Went to the Valborg celebration and had such an amazing time wandering through the mansion, listening to live music, and checking out the Solar Egg Sauna. They have a lovely area for kids to play inside the mansion as well. The food at FIKA was delicious. The staff were all extremely knowledgeable and friendly and we learned so much. Overall, it was just a really wonderful experience. We will definitely be going back to check out future exhibits. We are especially looking forward to the Viking exhibit they are showing in May (2019.)
I really enjoyed the current exhibition by Kim Simonsson. It is a unique place in Minneapolis with history and not typical building. There is also nice coffee and tiny giftshop. Students have discount there.
What a great surprise to get an invitation for dinner and to tour such a great mansion. Volunteers are extremely knowledgeable and fun to learn from!
Interesting Swedish heritage museum/mansion. Worth a quick visit.
One of the best parts about AMS as a venue is that you get so many unique spaces all in one spot! The historical house, the beautiful gardens and the cool, modern look of the museum. The staff and food are wonderful, and it is an absolute pleasure to work at this venue!
We had a lovely lite lunch here. The food was delicious and the staff were attentive and very helpful. The seating was out in the open and felt like eating at outdoor seating. A nice treat in January.
Love how well the historical house is taken care of! Beautiful and a great educational experience for all ages. Also love the Kids at the Castle event for toddlers/preschoolers each month with the scavenger hunt and craft! They have an amazing childrens play area with high quality play materials.
Very interesting and beautiful place. The art they are displaying currently is so thought provoking.
Wow!! The kids room at the ASI is gorgeous! Love every food item at Fika
ASI is a wonderful museum and community resource so we decided to have our wedding there. It was absolutely incredible and Brenda Thrower is an amazing person to work with. She is calm, prepared, enthusiastic and a top-notch planner. Great space and great food! I’m confident that you will have an outstanding experience here. We love you ASI!
I spend many hours @ the Swedish Institute. Its an incredible place to be a member!
I loved this mansion. The wood crafting and the ceiling decor was absolutely amazing. Everywhere I looked there was something else to see. Vikings exhibit was just ok.
I love ASI. Its such a fun place to visit and they always have amazing things going on that you can sign up and participate in. I love that I get to learn more about my heritage and well.
Something for almost everyone- food, architecture, history, mythology, culture, and a beautiful outdoor space.
The architecture of this previous family home, current exhibit of Swedish Clothing Fiber Artis, Gudrun Sjoden is colorful and inspiring!
Visited the egg sauna. Very cool.
The Turnbull mansion is beautiful, especially when decorated for the holidays, but dont miss the cultural center next door. Fikac has great food in addition to adult beverages. (Get the hard cider!) The brochure for the mansion serves as a great guide so you can wander at leisure and not feel rushed or crowded. The gift shop is great, so dont skip it.
Always lovely and informative. They have the best exhibits!
This museum is a great size. Its not so big that youd have to spend all day there, but its not so small that youre finished in 20 minutes. I really enjoyed walking around and taking photos
New exhibit is fun. The castle looks stunning every room is looking its best, chandeliers are sparkling and older object are seen anew in a new light.
Truly a sight to behold, the mansion houses a staggering number of rooms, each presenting a unique style and design. The Institutes added structures outside the mansion allow easy access to the main house through bright tunnels. The gift shop is complimented with a restaurant, and a small art gallery which is also incorporated into the mansion itself. Highly recommend to anyone interested in history, art, architecture, design, or similar.
Loved the mansion and the old items that were in there. It was very interesting seeing all the old items. We went when they had the Viking exhibit which was great to see. The food in Fika was very good but I thought it was overpriced for the little bit you got. The price to get in was a little steep too. But I do realize that it does takes money to run this place.
Great place. Went for the Viking exhibit, which I thought could have used more artifacts, but excited to go back for the Christmas trees. The mansion is amazingly beautiful - go check it out!
Its a beautiful house and a great sauna. Must place to visit in Minneapolis.
A Minneapolis icon. If you havent gone - you should! You learn a lot of history about the area, Scandinavian immigrants, and their home countries. Plus they put on a lot of exhibits for Christmas, which are always beautiful.
Elegant restaurant! Very enjoyable for people who like architecture and interiors. Well curated small exhibits. I recommend this if you want to go to a museum, but dont have a whole day to spend.
We screened a great film there, beautiful environment.
Gorgeous castle. Saw the very interesting Viking artifact exhibit. Good onsite restaurant too.
Spectacular place to visit. Great pictures.
The new ExtraOrdinary exhibit is awesome! I love the way they integrated Tara Sweeneys art into the mansion rooms.
Great history of Swedish immigrants to Minnesota
JULMARKNAD the ASIs holiday market starts today at 10 am! Find FRONT AVENUE POTTERY upstairs.
Beautiful place. The staff are amazing, friendly people who are very knowledgeable about the exhibits and history of place. The exhibits are beautiful and unique. The mansion and its architecture and contents are very well kept up and absolutely breathtaking.
Classic old mansion, with wood paneling and a gorgeous central staircase. It is always decked out beautifully for the holidays, and this year is no exception. The docents really know their stuff! Plus there is parking and the lovely Fika Cafe.
Nice place for swedish history and culture
Amazing wood interiors. I was also quite surprised at how many fireplaces were in the building.
A lot of interesting art and decoration. The Swedish food bar is a nice touch for people who havent experienced authentic Swedish food. Their Christmas decorations are especially beautiful.
Fabulous lunch spot at Fika, beautiful manor history.
Clean. The mansion is amazing. Continuously up-kept since its construction. Knowledgeable docents. A must see.
Awesome food at Fika! Gift shop has lots of unique handcrafted gifts. Perfect place to go during Christmas season for special holiday gifts. Perfect Christmas tradition
Amazing place. Always a history exhibit, which is fascinating. Also a very historic mansion, and a few people there to teach you about the mansion.
Beautiful building and kind people. The restaurant is amazing... Go right when it opens to get a seat.
The American Swedish Institue never disappoints. I recently toured the 101 Bowls exhibit that just opened. Three words, dont miss it. This exhibit showcases the work of artists who in many ways give new meaning to the word bowl. I was not only impressed with the various styles and interpretations by the different artists, but what really made it for me was the way the exhibit was arranged and displayed. The dark room with the art glass perfectly lit to highlight the beauty and colors of the pieces gathered the most wows. I definitely want to go back for a second visit.
Great facility great food great environment
So many unique things to see. If you love wood carvings this place is for you. From classic designs to folk art you will appreciate the inspiration.
This visit was AWESOME...the Viking exhibit is truly an original experience...
Awesome place, history, parking is abundant and place is huge always wanted to go and finally went last weds. And didnt regret it.
No Pewdiepie fan art but still awesome LOL
Love Makers Mornings in the stucca. Great fellowship and time to work on personal craft projects.
The home is really something and the volunteers are phenomenal. Was not overly impressed by some or their visiting exhibits but such is life. Looking forward to seeing what they do in the future!
My wife and I went to see the Viking exhibit which was wonderful and quite informative. We happened to catch a guided tour around the mansion. The tour guide was very endtertaining and knowledgeable. I cant wait to go back!
The American Swedish institute is an all around beautiful place. I did not dine at the restaurant but I see it to be a place suitably designed to accommodate anyones style of a sitting place to have his or her delicious meal.
It was my 1st visit & I loved it, the staff was warm and friendly, the cookies from Fika restaurant were delicious. The Christmas decorations were beautiful & every room had beautiful antiques. I will be going again.
Definitely a great place to see the holiday decorations. An amazing old home, with phenomenal wood work/carvings everywhere.
Bonus- they have a delicious cafe that exclusively serves Swedish fare!

This place never disappoints. Fika is fantastic. The mansion is well maintained with excellent staff and volunteers. Also, great events, snow or shine.
Fun place to poke around in with the fam. The Christmas exhibit was .
My family stopped in on a rainy day looking for something to do. This was such a fun way to spend the day! The mansion is gorgeous, and filled with history. Inside there is also a small restaurant, Fika that serves Nordic cuisine, mostly lunch fare as well as cocktails, wine and beer.
Culture served up like a fine wine! The people there are so passionate about their heritage! Beautiful place! Fika! Great place for lunch!!
The soup was delicious. But disappointed that the furniture was gone in most of the rooms of the mansion. Just a painting gallery.
