2500 ft elevation above sea level for a 360 view of bay area. Started from the bottom to complete the Mount Tam Summit Loop but you can just drive to the East Peak parking lot if you dont want to hike. Hiking sticks and shoes is useful if you dont drive up. Water fountains did not work at the peak but bathrooms were available. Overall, one of the highest, best view of the bay area.
Visited the Verna Dunshee Trail, its super easy for families with young kids. Its mostly flat, paved and its length is less than 1 mile. The views are simply stunning. Getting there takes a while, but the drive is well worth it! Parking was not a problem, plenty of spots, but there was a fee of $8 (cash only, deposit money in envelope, not sure if anyone is enforcing it though). Would definitely recommend this amazing place for anyone with time to make it out there.
The Mount Tamalpais East Peak is well worth a visit. There are 360 degree views from the summit at the fire lookout tower and you can see for miles across the Bay Area. Best to visit on a clear sunny day for the best views. The hike to the fire lookout tower is only .3 miles one way, but well worth it for the views.
Spectacular view if you walk/hike to the top of peak. Just pay attention when coming down the peak. Immediately as you start back down be sure to pick the right trail to backtrack the way you came up.
Excellent view. Water is not available up there. Be prepared.
Great hiking venue. Wonderful views of the entire Bay Area. Needs to get potable water back though.
Loved this little place, you can follow the trail from mill valley, it drive and park almost at the top...
One of the best views in the bay you can hike up temelpa trail head or drive up
Hiked up to this place via the Dipsea Trail (starting in Mill Valley), hooked a right just before One Tree Hill to get to Pan Toll campground, then up the Old Railroad Grade trail/road to the West Point Inn and on to the Peak. Was a great hike (about 9 miles), with awesome views and lots of wildlife (deer, turkey, chipmunks, giant banana slugs, giant snails). Even if the weather isnt great (which it wasnt when I did this), its still worth it.
Nice paved trail loop around the peak. Very interesting to learn about the history of the peak where there used to be a railroad dubbed Crookedest Railroad in the World running between the peak and Mill Valley. It could get hot at the peak as there were very little shade, so bring your hat, sunscreen, umbrella(?) to protect yourself.
Either drive to the top and walk the trail around the lookout or start lower and hike your way to the top... but dont miss this view!!On this visit, looking west the Farallon Islands looked like an arms reach away. The City by the bay was glorious, the Marin watershed glistened and you could even see the snow capped Sierras.
Nice mountain. Great views of bay, pacific redwoods, and cities.
Easy hike from parking lot. Big parking lot and self registration for $8. 360 degree view. Best views of SF downtown on clear day. Views include Mount Diablo and other peaks in far distance.Windy carry jacket. Fire lookout is locked and not accessible.
Beautiful view of Stinson Beach and Bolinas with Pt Reyes in the distance. And when the coast is clear a nice view of Muir Beach and San Francisco and the Bay
Fun place to take kids and do a small hike with beautiful veiws! There is a little shop to buy post cards, etc. The shop closes by 4pm.
Great view but not a lot of people. Hidden gem.
Best views of the bay. You could see south bay on a clear day
The view of the entire bay area is breath taking
The best point to see everything
$8 to park here. Restrooms available. A nice short hike (about 10-15min) to the top but would recommend good hiking shoes since its rocky.
Drop dead gorgeous views here. My favorite time to go is at sunset, its absolutely breathtaking! Short 15 minute hike up to the top after parking (which is around $10 and based on honor system). Google maps doesnt take you all the way there, just keep driving until you hit a dead end into the parking lot.
Very beautiful hike with lots of picture opportunities.
Took the Mountain Home Inn to the East Peak trail. A beautiful shaded hike through the woods (redwood groves, coastal pine, oak and other deciduous) with minimal exposure. A very nice winter hike,Takes around 3-4 hrs roundtrip. Hard/Difficult but not strenuous, ideal for its length of 4mi r/t, massive views at summit.
Campfire smoke severely restricted visual distance, but it was still a scenic drive.
We only live about an hour away and have never explored this area we took a chance and end up having a great day finding lakes and waterfalls that we neve new was in that areaOnce we got to the top it was much warmer then we expected so its best to wear layers lolAlso there was a few fun things to do at the top and then 15 min hike to the top it was easy but you still need good shoes and if you have bad knees like me a little helpYou can see forever up there not much shade so be ready for thatOverall we had a great day for a day drive
This is the most beautiful place.
Love the view from the top
Easy little hike up to the top of you park your car at the very top. Beautiful views. Decent restrooms.
Amazing, sweeping, 360-degree views and a really easy uphill trail from the parking lot with the option to lightly scramble on a rock on the way up. Bathrooms! The parking passes are still issued by paper and cash/check which makes me wonder how many people really pay (I did!).
Excellent climb, great views
I love this mountain.
Home of the peak experience! Definitely take the walk it’s well worth it! Great place to view Richardson bay is under the lookout tower.
Ive both hiked and drove to the top of Mt Tamalpais. Depending on the weather there are stunning views at the top, or all you see is fog. For those hiking, its a beautiful trail.
Beautiful short hike that just about anyone can do! Took my parents up to the top today and what greeted us was an amazing view of the bay area. If you have a couple hours to spare, head up there, you wont regret it!
Easily one of my favorite places to go. Good hiking, exceptional riding and picturesque mtbing. Theres even some rock climbing if you know where to look. Just be sure to clean up after your animal and pack out any trash you generate.
I gave Mount Tam five stars because the way I got up to the mountain, on the back of Richards Ducati. Incredible views, incredible place and a short ride to Stinson Beach or to Inverness or further north to Point Reyes.
The place had the best views in the way
The view is just fantastic !!! But it’s quite windy, so take care to have some coat or warm clothes with you.
Great view of the cityFantastic trail for beginners
Great 360 view
A nice little hike with gorgeous views.
I like how the other hikers are so informative and supportive. It really helps, especially with first timers. The climb is awesome, look over and take it all in
I really like this place for the view. There are picnic tables if you want to take your own food. I recommend the short hikes near the parking lot as well as going all the way to the mountain top. Mountain top will be the best view. There is a small store/shop at the top but dont rely on it because the schedule is funky, take all your stuff. Highly recommended.
Great place for hiking
This place have a beautiful view!!
Stunning views when you make it to the top. You can hike up from Temelpa Trailhead or go easy and drive up most of the way to the Gravity Car parking lot.
Easy 30-minute walk along a paved trail. As you walk around the peak, you will see stunning views of San Francisco, the Bay, and the distant Sierra Nevada.
Epic drive up there, spectacular views
Great hike. Absolutely gorgeous view on top of mountain. Nice for tourists and everyone else. Make sure to bring coat as its windy. I recommend bringing children so they can see the awesome view.
Amazing views and only a .25 miles uphill from the parking lot. A good stop to add to a hike from the Pantoll ranger station.
Stupendous views when the weather is clear. The climb on the rocky path to the top is not that easy -- wear sturdy shoes!
Beautiful and serene...an easy drive and a hike to disconnect and getaway from the misunderstood race about 5000 ft below..
Wow.
Best views of the north bay!
Great place! awesome views and not a major hike. would love to go back
Absolutely incredible views!
Walk the Verna Dunshee trail. Almost level and fantastic views.
0.3 mile hike from the parking lot, $7 per day for parking, totally worth the views. The drive up and down was the hardest part
The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. There was plenty of parking and the trail was well maintained.
Awesome views from the top. The slog up and down were just as memorable.
A great getaway and great view of the area
Great for hiking. We starter at pantoll campground and hiked our way up. Do go early since parking can be an issue later in the day and last part of the hike is unshaded. Great views from the top and on the way.
Beautiful views on the top of the mountain. Richmond bridge looks small .
Relatively easy home, very accessible, great for someone with a family since nearly anyone should be able to climb to the peak
Hidden gem...nice trails...great view. $8 per car day use.
Short hike to summit well worth the breathtaking views of the North Bay, San Francisco Bay and San Francisco
This is the focal point of Mt. Tamalpais. (Better known to Marinites as Mt. Tam) Beautiful to hike there as it is to see in the distance.
At the top, after a quick but steep hike, there are spectacular panaromic views of the entire Bay Area.
Great views, paid parking, trail is accessible to strollers, up to top with building is steep.
Great views of San Francisco from this peak
Challenging hike is worthwhile for the birds eye view of the bay and San Francisco.
Great airspace. I was lucky enough to get the Mavic Pro 1 out for a quick spin. Cheers!
Big parking lot and restrooms, note that parking costs $8 cash. Nice short but steep hike up to the lookout station. Trail is mostly rock. If youre not up for it, just take the wooden path part way for pretty good views.
The most beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay Area around.
The East Peak is a great spot with the best views in the county. The watchtower is closed to the public but the rocks around it provide a great view. If you dont want to reach the actual peak, theres a nice smooth paved trail that goes around it.My recommendation is to climb to the top from a different trailhead, which makes the trek worth it (and avoids paying the fee at the parking lot). The best for this are Old Stage/Old Railroad and the longer trek up Eldridge Grade from Phoenix Lake. The biggest downside, honestly, is that theres little infrastructure since the tavern was demolished a half century ago. The park service should bring it back!
Love thid blesssed piece of my landd
Breathtaking
A beautiful Vista with killer views
Amazing view! Must go place.
Lovely drive. Astonishing views.
Not a bad hike from the parking lot. Very nice view if it is not cloudy.
Great hike! Very short, but not easy.
Super fun. Hike and great view of the city! Got to see the fog roll into San Francisco while the sun set!
Anytime I have friends come visit, I always take them up to Mount Tam East Peak. This has the best views (if youre looking to get above the clouds, this is the place to go!!) and you can take the best pictures.Secret: dont like hikes but still want the view? You can drive almost all the way to the top of East Peak and park your car. There is almost always parking available. I suggest doing at least a 2-3 hour hike (you can start at various places- read the other reviews) so you at least feel a sense of accomplishment for reaching the peak.. but you can do whatever you want.Once you get to the parking lot, its about a 20-30 minute walk to the top of East Peak by where the security overlook is.
Awesome facility and so worth the short, but technical, hike to the top. Watch the fog roll in on the south side and see the rolling fields and hills from the north side.
Great hikes and views!
Wow! Worth the hike if you start a couple miles down. For others you can drive and walk 0.3 miles. Handlrail on the trail most of the way up but gets Rocky and tricky for those not hiking inclinded. still a great view. Only 6-8 other people up their when we hiked it 1-5-19.
A must do. Reminds me of devils head in Colorado.
Amazing views
Go asap. You wont regret it.
Muir Woods will be packed on a normal day, but if you take a right instead of a left, youll end up here and it will be practically empty. You can take a very easy walk around the east peak and get treated to spectacular views. Or if youre up for a little more adventure, you can hike up to the fire lookout on the top of the peak and get the absolute best views. Be warned, this trail is more rocky and uneven and its not hard to turn an ankle.
Nice place to visit a sunset time
Great place to hike
