Small but worth the stop if youre in the area. Lots of helpful park rangers hanging around
Fascinating tours led by dedicated docents who previously actually served performing these jobs in missle facilities.
Definitely one of the greatest experiences on my US road trip along the West Coast! We just happened to stumble across this amazing site, because we didnt know how to pay the Golden Gate Bridge toll, and we had to branch off to look it up on Google. There was no service, and we had to drive for a while to find service, and thats when we happended to pass this site. And it was open and they were about to launch the last tour of the day. Talk about luck! Our guide was a very knowledgeable gentleman who took us through the inner workings of the site with great enthusiasm!Im visiting again next time I come to San Fran!
This Nike Missioe Site is a reminder of what the Cold War was about. It was eye-opening to see the site, including various missiles. The Park Ranger, Al, who gave the tour was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and entertaining. You could tell he likes what he does and that made this experience all the better. Various veterans who worked at Nike sites shared some of their experiences. 100% recommended experience if you are in the area.
Very cool military history in the Bay Area. The Park Rangers were professional and excellent. Tour is mandatory and they will escort you throughout the site. You get to see the underground bunker and more.
Not much to see but if you love military stuff, then you might like it.You could see missiles coming in and out of a small underground facility. The workers there explain you almost everything
Very cool military site. Guides on a Saturday were helpful and informative, with awesome stories to share. This is a great location for field trips, Scout troops, or just one stop on your long weekend in Marin.
As memorable a tour as Alcatraz! Be sure to visit! But please note Internet reception is not reliable. So if you take an uber like us you will be relying on the bus to get back to San Francisco. No problem, just helps to be prepared!
Cool to seer the system still works.
Very interesting military historic site. This plus all the gun batteries make for an interesting day!
Great place to learn about History! If you are a science major and love Aerospace - This place is for you, dont miss its guided tour, you have no idea what you would have missed until you visit former site critical to US defense.
Super cool place to learn about history. They actually take the missal out of the bankers
Dont miss this wonderful historic and technological free site. Important history of the Cold War. This is the only nuclear missile silo you can visit in the USA
Good place and a good tour the guys are informative. Thank you for your volunteer Add then Nike site.
Great place to visit. Free tours.
The location was great. Tour guides were informative and shared stories. Its cool to see a missile up in front of you. The visit was worth it.
Great! Was lucky enough to be there during a open house, the volunteers were great
Dedicated volunteer, many veterans, will guide you through the past experience of alertness typical of the cold war. Recommended in particular the forst Saturday of the month for extended activities
Very cool place and essential stop for military historians and veterans. A small duty station but with a lot of very cool facts and stories to learn about.
Greatwide demonstration decommissioned Nike missile site. Very interesting!
Awesome tour from NPS personnel and actual missile workers that worked on the site decades ago!
Very cool historic site. The tour guides know their stuff and are easy to listen to. There was even one veteran there when we went who had manned the missile site when it was active. Not great for young kids because its a lot of being talked at and not much action. Recommend kids of at least middle school age.
This is insanely underrated as a historical site and tour. Its amazingly well done by dedicated and knowledgeable people in one of the most picturesque locations. Take the time and do the tour its really worth it. Enjoy the sights on the way in and the education once youre here.
Beautiful place. Got clean up crew there helping with the drainage so that will help keep it looking good for a while.
Great free attraction, with knowledgeable tour guides
This is a must see. You get to go below ground and see the storage. They raise the Missile into launch position. Great history lesson.
This is a must see. You get to go under ground into the bunker. They raise the Missile into launch position. The history lesson is great.
Went on a group tour! OMG! It was amazing! Went during Memorial Day weekend and fortunate enough to have military show up and talk!
Really interesting former launch-site of nuclear-tipped Nike missiles. Have to go on a tour to experience and appreciate this piece of cold war history.
Its a nice place to visit for 2 hours on a weekend
Very cool tour of this cold war era missile site - many of the guides worked at this or similar sites.
Man, this place was just great! Abandoned military base just great for exploring! We were able to get a tour of the Nike Missile Site and it was the best! Highly, highly, highly recommend this attraction if you like AWESOME. Just hiking around the area was just so beautiful and peaceful. I cant wait to go back.
Pretty cool piece of history. You can tour the silo area and see a missile raised and lowered. On the day I went there, they had actual veterans who worked the missiles giving the tours.
A one of a kind tour as its the only one open to the public and restored, the tour is great and the benefits of having veterans tell their stories makes it even better. The site would benefit greatly from increase funding, to make it more operational, however, we did get a minor run through with the doors opening. The only major downside is the limited time its opened for.
Very good view of Golden gate bridge and also SFO, pretty nice ride up. Can do hikes here. You might even see some whales from here where sea meets the bay. If in bay area, nice place to visit.
We made a day out of walking the Golden Gate Bridge and heading to the Nike Missile site. The site is just minutes from the bridge in the Marin Headlands. My two sons (13, 16) and I found the tour fascinating. Who knew we had nukes scattered up and down the coast from the mid-40s to 1974? Ranger Al Blank and the volunteer docents, most who served at this site or another were excellent. A great mix of history, personal experiences, and wisdom. Tour is an easy walk with a few steep stairs. Pictures are allowed. We took video as they demonstrated raising the missile from the pit and moved it into launch position. Great opportunity to interact with history and engage your children in meaningful conversation. Highly recommend the visit.
This is amazing historic site! Highly recommended
The volunteers were very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the exhibit. It was a great tour and they took time to answer questions and chat.
This place was very cool. The Park Ranger took us on an amazing tour and even set up a missile in launching position. It felt very authentic and was good experience over all but from what I heard from the Park Ranger it does get pretty crowded so I would try to go on a Thursday or days where the weather is a bit colder so there are less people and you get a more personal experience.
There are traces of 265 Nike Missile sites around the US, but SF-88 is the only restored site in the country. Every part of this complex, from the launch computers to the elevator ride down to the missile bunker is fascinating. The best time to go is on first Saturdays of the month when the Nike veterans volunteer to tell stories and explain how things work down to every detail. Every time I visit, I leave with the sobering reminder of our Cold War past.
The volunteers are the most amazing people and are very passionate. Depending on the weather the missile hatch may or may not be opened. I have been here twice. The second time it was raining and since they couldnt open up the entire missile complex they showed us another section on radio communications.
Very interesting.
Very nice place
This place is very interesting to visit. The volunteers have done an amazing job of re-creating the Cold War era missile site.
The drive here provides some of the most magnificent and breathtaking views Ive seen anywhere. That alone makes this trip worth it.The volunteer docents are amazing. (Thank you for doing what you do.) Theyre interesting, answering all the questions and relating their own personal experience from when they staffed these missile defense facilities during the cold war. Its amazing ( and scary ) that all these nuclear missiles were deployed around the country to defend us against an attack.Watching the missile move into launch position and then getting to go underground where the missiles are stored made this an awesome visit.
A fully restored Nike missile site (minus the nukes of course. Or at least I hope!). Crazy to hear the stats on these things. Breaking the sound barrier within seconds of takeoff? Wow. And the guys that volunteer there are former military folk that worked on Nike sites. They are very serious and any sort of joke will be met with an annoyed look by them.I cant fault them. They spent who knows how many hours working there hiding from the enemy and being a line of defence for a nuclear attack in the US. And now a bunch of civvies show up, snapping pictures, and cracking jokes like its no big deal. I dont fault them.
Fascinating museum/tour for any avionics, computing, military, radar or rocketry history geeks. Definitely go on the first Saturday of the month, when a bunch of Nike veterans are around to answer questions. The launch/lift hydraulics for the missiles are in working order and demoed by staff. Pretty neat.
Be sure to be there on the Saturdays where they have tours. Folks who served there show the equipment and explain how it worked and the purpose.
Excellent historical site, guides know their stuff. A must see at the Headlands
Not a terribly exciting place to visit but still valuable for its historical properties.
Loved listening to the veterans stories and there experiences while working on the site in the late 60s and early 70s
On the 1st Saturday of each month, the raise the missile above ground for show. You can also go down to the bunker that houses the missiles to see them up close. Quite fascinating seeing all the old technology that fortunately, was never used.
Really great and informative tour
The hours posted on this web page are INCORRECT. It is only open the first Saturday of the month until May. The hours listed on the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (NRA) website are correct. I give it five stars anyway, because it is not the fault of the Nike Missile Site that the hours published by Google are incorrect.
A Missile that Hits its TargetPros: Amazing piece of Cold War American engineering. The missiles are huge and beautifully restored and kept. It is amazing to be able to still see such a great site near San Francisco. You will be able to learn a whole lot more about the Cold War and the defense network that existed around San Francisco. A lot of stuff you dont learn in traditional school textbooks or even from popular culture. The guides here are great. They know a lot and are more than willing to answer any and all questions. Here you can find an example of some of the earliest computers in the US military. Great drive, the view of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco around this area is amazing. Free admission is also great!Cons: The unclear signage can be quite confusing. Also, its quite the trek to the site. There are very few, if any public buses. Driving is the main and best way to get to this location. Limited hours that its open.Tips: Please do call the Marin Headlands visitors office before visiting, as the hours are quite limited. Also make sure to wait for a tour, when you arrive it may seem deserted, but as long as they are open there will be a tour soon. Signage is unclear, but surely not to be missed. Also, it might be worth it to make it a day trip and visit Point Bonita Lighthouse. They are really close and both are well worth the trip.
The best attraction I have been to in years. Time your visit with one of the data that the veterans are giving tours. INCREDIBLE
This is an awesome half day excursion. Where else can you soak in Cold War history and glimpse views of the Pacific Ocean and Marin Headlands?Go the first Saturday of the month when Nike missile vets and volunteers take you through the military exercises and explain the engineering behind the equipment. Some of these old timers were at these sites back in the day, readying for a possible Soviet strike. Priceless! Youll even see them raise the missile from the underground bunker to launch the war head. Plenty of hands on action, photo ops, and moving parts to impress the kids.
Open Friday and Saturday. Check schedule for the awesome tour of the bunker and launch system!
Open daily but especially good first Saturday every month when they have open house. Great docents, most of whom served at Nike batteries during the cold war.
Incredible fellas all over the park volunteering. Many from the time of the areas hayday. A.D.A. soldiers... youll love a trip out here.
Not a whole lot here, but very informative when the veterans are volunteering.
A must see. Try and go the one day a month it is manned by the missile base veterans. They make it one of the top tours in the national park system.
The only restored Nike Missle sight in the country. Part of our Cold War defense system. They can actually bring a (decommissioned) missle out of the bunker and raise it to launch position in mere minutes.
What amazing foolishness the Cold War was. Here is can see a monument to Mankinds folly. I really enjoyed it and I highly recommend the tour. Just make sure you call to confirm the place is open
Really interesting to see this part of history, and all the equipment. The docents were very knowledgeable.
Great tour of a missile site with operational equipment and knowledgeable guides. I got to move a missile on its loading platform, watch radar displays, watch a missile be brought to the surface and raised--ready for launch.
The NPS staff are knowledgeable to a ridiculous degree and the site offers a glimpse at a history not many know. Put yourself in the mind of the soldiers of that era and youll leave with perspective, no matter what your politics or feelings about nuclear warfare.
If you are fortunate to time your visit with the 1st Saturday of the month when veterans provide a detailed tour to include functioning one of the Nike missiles to the launch position...awesome!
I toured SF88 when it was active in 1969, I was stationed at Mill Valley Air Force Station atop Mt. Tam, when we were the Command Post for the Nike Batteries. Our home base was at the Presidio in San Francisco. I took this picture of the AADCP (Army Air Defense Command Post) at Mill Valley Air Force Station in 1968 the view is from our barracks area. It was great duty with a fantastic view.
Nike Missile Site SF-88 is only open one or two days a month. Ive toured here twice. The first time they let us go down into the bunker where the missiles are stowed. I think this is the only site where you can see the actual missiles. They have the radar rotating, too On my last visit a missile was top side keeping us safe from that 1950s attack. Even though the guard in the sentry box is a dummy you get a feel for cold war ambiance. Did you know, the perimeter fence was patrolled by attack dogs back in the day?
DO THE TOUR!!! They lift the missile in the air!! Amazing experience. Make sure you check opening times, as they are limited.
It was a great tour, and a fascinating place. Easily the best thing that we saw on our trip.
Decent place to visit if youre interested in this type of thing, a bit of a trek to get there though.
This is a cool spot hidden away just across the bridge. Go on the first Saturday of the month, when veterans are around to answer your questions.
This restored Nike missile site was an easy half-day trip from San Mateo. The drive alone is worth the effort because the views from Conzelman Rd. of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco are amazing. Our daughter thought of this visit as an extra credit project for her AP US history class. The facility did not disappoint: it has been painstakingly restored to its Cold War condition. The volunteer staff are clearly passionate about their work. They are former Nike operators who can describe not only the purpose and operation of the facility but also their feelings and experiences as active participants in the 40-year nuclear stand-off. Watching a Nike Hercules rise from an underground bunker and lock into launch position is impressive, but going down into the bunker itself and seeing 6 restored missiles lined up on a conveyor, knowing that each one once carried a nuclear warhead with 3X the destructive power of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, is mind-boggling. At this site you can experience the sights, sounds, and feelings of an important piece of the Cold War.
Had a great day
Its an interesting place and definitely worth visiting if visiting Rodeo beach/Point bonita light house. Parking lot is quite small and gets crowded in weekend afternoons..
Great experience
Not much left to see, but glad to have one of the Nike sites left for history
I drove up there one time it was beautful! and you could see the ocean and L.A.
A great history lesson from those who served
The guides are fantastic and offer first hand knowledge of the equipment and operations of the site.
Pretty cool. Only open first Saturday of the month though.
Amazing, humbling, terrifying experience. Ranger Al is a national treasure.
Great tour where you can walk in the buildings.
Historical and knowledgeable veterans tour guides
Great way to spend a few hours
Just simply awesome...
Great tour!
Cool place
The tour is fantastic!
Great historical site.
