I remember the first time I came to Belle Grove was when I was a student at Shenandoah University....the moment I drove down Belle Grove Road I had the instant feeling as if I was coming home. I have been in love with Belle Grove Plantation ever since **Important to note that Belle Grove is partners with the NPS and CCBF and other groups who share the battlefield. So hours of operation are different for each location. So please check their websites before visiting.
Great audio tour. Sign at Miller House is missing.
Lot of history. Fantastic views. Worth visiting!
This is not the best of parks, but they did a decent job with the self guided tour with the app you can download. It too is about4 hours to do the whole tour.
We had a wonderful volunteer tour guide and its a great mix of historical site seeing and a fill of information!
Wish you had listed here that you arw are completely closed from Covid. We drove so far. So disappointed
Middletown has a self guided tour of the battlefield you can easily drive. # 8 is broken... hope they can fix it soon :)
This site is closed right now because of Covid. You cannot even walk on the grounds of the home. It was a complete waste of our time.
Decent driving tour. Unfortunately not a lot of preservation of the battle.
This is definitely an experience that people should take in no matter what perspective you have on the civil war. The only issue I can address is that nowhere on the rules or even posted when entering did it say a concealed carry firearm was prohibited. It is abundantly puzzling to me that a group that so uses the Constitution and the efforts towards keeping true with it would deny people coming their 2 amendment right to protect themselves. Big disappointment in the exclusion in this environment. Seems ironic and sad to me.
This was a really great visit! My honey and I have made it our mission to check out the National Parks sites around us, and this was one we got to check off our list. The drive out here was absolutely breath-taking (being next to Shenandoah, of course it is). The site itself is formed from a lot of partnerships with local organizations, so not everything is free. Most of the offerings are very low-cost, but it is something to be aware of that you may have to pay a bit to get into some things. The official NPS-run portion consists of some individual-led things and a ranger talk at the Belle Grove plantation - we chose to do the walking trail along the battlefield. The picture Ive attached is of a massive spider that was on the trail! It is very natural, so make sure youre dressed appropriately and okay with being touched by spiderwebs. There are a lot.The visitor center/starting point was really lovely. The ranger was friendly as always and gave us a huge range of options to visit. The exhibits inside were really cool and informative - it was really special to see how much history was in this tiny town. This is definitely one if youre interested in Civil War history, but you should also make time to see it due to the areas natural beauty.
Didnt not get to tour! Staff is very rude!
Beautiful place .. Cute gift shop.
Google Maps takes you to one location, website says to go to the contact station & gives an address, then a 3rd location has a sign that saysvisitor center- its closed twice a week & has limited hours the rest of the week. Today it was closed. Itd be great if 1 location could be agreed upon so visitors know where to go.A sign at the visitor center indicates youre meant to buy an info book to learn where the stops are- we didnt, luckily we found a little info online. No good map. One of the stops youre meant to pay an admission fee- park passes not accepted- but that was also closed when we were there.Yorktown was a much better experience. Cold Harbor at Richmond is also a much better experience.
Always a great time! Good food, good service, casual atmosphere.
Civil War Reenactment was a spectacular event. $12 covers parking and entry to the event. Food stands and portajohnnies on site. The show itself ran about 1 1/2 hours. The police were amazing
Great place if youre interested in the civil war and the history of the area
Discreet and semi-enthusiastic pork to be had here if you dont mind less than sanitary eating conditions. Bring your own bib.
Beautiful location for a historic Plantation. I was able to find their whiskey at a local ABC store thats actually not bad
It is a southern style mansion that has historic references and they have tours.
We love this re enactement of the battle. Our daughter had a great time as well. We also bought a lantern one of the reenactors makes himself.
Had a great time here, and the Ranger Jeff was so knowledgeable, you almost expected him to be wearing a blue or grey uniform and telling all of the details about the units and preparations that were going on before, during and after the battle.
Rich in history. Park rangers are quite friendly & very knowledgeable about the surrounding area, in addition to the park itself. Currently hosting an archeological dig through the beginning of August!
The living history and battle re-enactment were very well done.
Great historical venue. Lots to see and learn about.
If you like history, go here. Youll enjoy it.
A place of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and anywhere God is is a great place to be
Just attended the 155th anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Creek, the event staff was great, this is a beautiful place.
Excellent Park Ranger Jeff Very knowledgeable who took us on tbe 2:00 tour on 9/21/19. Learned a lot
Great place to go and learn about the war. Beautiful views great place to take the family.
Fascinating Historical Spot
We enjoyed the house tour. Need more than hours time to enjoy the surroundings and battlefield tour.
Great site, well kept and the Docents there are too notch
The views from the overlooks were amazing and it was very clean throughout the park
Belle Grove of Ale and History (every second Saturday of May) is a wonderful event for any beer lover. Local brews mixed with regional beers makes for an outstanding time for ones beer tasting buds.As an added bonus one may tour the house and grounds.History and beer; a great combo!
This park is a patchwork of land parcels managed by a consortium of organizations including the National Park Service, located in an exceptionally beautiful conjunction of mountain ranges, rivers, and fertile farmlands. A young and personable park ranger took us on a two-hour driving tour of the area while telling a compelling story of the battles that unfolded here to snatch a key Union victory from the jaws of defeat at a crucial point towards the end of the Civil War. Would recommend it highly.
It was nice but i just slept for the night.
I have been going to Cedar Creek Reenactments for 25 years. The most pristine Battlefield you can find today. The Real Battlefield and Plantation house just like 1864......
Enjoyed their Xmas decor & music!
Enjoy all the new be places we visited inSC
Absolutely enjoyed this place. Will stop by every chance I get.
Incredible opportunity for one-on-one interaction with a NPS ranger (Shannon) who was amazingly attentive and informative. Very helpful audio tour available for download. The site itself is developing almost before ones eyes with new walking tours and signage: very much a work in progress, but its worth making some effort of imagination in this arguably most dramatic battle of the Civil War. A light-up map in the visitor center, with accompanying video, really helps you visualize the course of the action.
Steeped in local and national history from colonial times through the Civil War. Site of a pivotal Civil War battle.
Fascinating history!
Cedar Creek is a work in progress. It has a wonderful ambiance as it is nestled in the Shenandoah Valley with lovely hills in the distance. Though trail access is limited, both the park service and other agencies are slowly increasing battlefield access. The Vermont Monument trail is highly recommended as is a visit to the Belle Grove mansion.
Just an amazing historical place to visit. Small fee to guided tour through out the home and gift shop below. No charge to walk the grounds. Well worth the visit.
Has best but longest dark road..
I love history, compared to some battle fields not much to see
Love, love, love Belle Grove. Wonderful staff, great programs
Loved chillin here for a minute.
Allow plenty of time. The Cedar Creek driving tour takes approximately 2 hours and they close gates at 5p.
Master Gardeners plant sale had great weather and interesting vendors.
Great place to eat with a friendly atmosphere.
Beautiful area, just passing by. Hope to come down and check out area some day.
Beautiful property and full of history.
Fun place for a walk through history.
All parks are great. People make them dirty but in general clean
Awesome exhibits, loved the walk around the property!
Great experience for youth and adults.
Great historical park that is very new and still being developed. Plenty to do, and a lot to learn. The Visitors Center is a must and gives a lot of information about the battle. The car tour, not signed when we did it, was very fun and informative. The fact that it was untouched was a plus, it allowed us to see how the area really was and still is. One of the Best Experiences ever, especially for history.
You have to visit Belle Grove when you go.
My 15 yr old son keeps asking to go back
Great place, friendly staff.
Very interesting and excellent tour guide
Nice place. Nice scenery
Loves so much my family took out a member ship
Nice mountain views, great for road trip breaks
Beautiful place to visit. the battle reenactments are stellar too
The annual reenactment on the 3rd weekend of October is the best! Weve been doing this as a family for several years. The living historians also make the past come alive. Well done handling the crowds also.
Very nice to visit from oot
The Battlefield is so beautiful
Awesome place great people
Beautiful piece of history in Middletown!
Love it going back soon
Very comfortable, clean campground.
This National Park is snuggled by the Shenandoah Valley. It has Civil War history as well as the story of the settlement of the valley. The views are also remarkable! Cant miss this park if youre in Virginia!
Very nice people. Interesting battlefield. A couple good walks. Enjoyed the day.
Just a good historical site to visit
Stopped in for a quick minute. The ranger Rick was exceptionally knowledgeable of the battle and Civil War history in general. As always a 5 star for another national park site
Super cool little spot to visit
Brilliant for a quick history lesson for kids about American civil war and plantation .staff friendly
Awesome place for the entire family
