I have both coached and had my children play for this organization. This is a league that is meant for fun, learning and respectful competition. With parent coaches and a good group of staff you get a good overall experience at both MYS and GYS.
I signed 3 of my girls up for the soccer program and we all really enjoyed it! My Husband and I got the chance to root them on while they brought the ball down the field at games and my girls learned sportsmanship, what it takes to be on a team and remembered to still have fun! Plus, they were outside being active, which is so important to us. The coaches were always so nice and always on time for practices. It was a great experience all around
So far we’ve had a great experience. We wanted something recreational and not competitive. Sports for young kids are so intense these days and we just wanted our 8 year old to have fun trying out a variety of sports. This is the perfect league for that. It is inexpensive and is a short term commitment. This is not a league for kids who want intense competition and a rigorous schedule. We are very busy and want our kids to learn the game and have fun. In the 8 year old coach pitch, everyone gets a turn to bat and field in each inning, and score is only kept in the kids’ heads, and you know they count! Yes the coaches are volunteers but we’ve been in more expensive leagues who also have volunteer coaches and it’s hit or miss with the skill and organization of the volunteer. Gilbert Youth Sports is good for us, maybe not for everyone, but we are glad it exists!
We’ve been using MYS for our children’s sports for several years! Each year is a great new experience with new kids, new parents and awesome parent coaches who step up and make the sport fun and enjoyable for my kiddos!
This league has been such a great experience for my boys and girl. We have 4 kids and they have all played for years. I have coached multiple teams along the way in flag football. I love that this league is about having fun and not price gouging families in the area.I appreciate how they accommodate teams when events come up like scout camps and things. We have scheduled games during the week and the league has been so great about providing a ref and letting us play instead of just forfeiting.Along the way, we have thought multiple times about going to a more “competitive league” but the convenience of this being close and the great coaches and parents we have met, as well as the great folks who own the league, keep us coming back for more.If you think your kid is going to the NFL (spoiler alert: he isn’t) then maybe there are leagues more suited for your needs. If your goal is to have fun in a low key environment and not pay a crazy amount of money, then you found the right spot.I have never had issues with rules changing or any problems like that. The league has always asked for input and stayed consistent in my book. There are always glitches and bumps in the road when you are dealing with this many kids doing all these sports. But I have to say this is a really fun league and I’m glad I found it.
Been using the league for 6 years. It has really grown in size and organization. My kids love playing and trying different sports.
The disorganization is evident from jersey pick up to game time. No coaches, parents trying to make sense of it while deciding practice times, locations and who is helping teaching these kids. Games are all located in one place, so you have basketball, football, volleyball and soccer all played in one location. Parking is insane, damage to the public schools they are held at are evident because parents park on grass, in rocks and jump fences.Basketball is in the same gym as volleyball, so balls from games go on the the courts. Parents ref and keep score which Ive seen result in parents yelling at one another. No one is there to manage or guide. Our basketball games had refs one week but not the next. Our soccer games never did and no one came over to provide said whistle or let us know. You will save money compared to other youth leagues, so if disorganization is something you can get past, it is significantly cheaper. However if you are hoping your child learn something about the sport, sees sportsmanship take place and practice it and want them to take something away from it, go somewhere else.
UPDATE: Gene (the owner of the organization) read this review and reached out to me regarding my concerns and he gave me his side of the story, which allowed me to have a better understanding of what he has to deal behind the scenes. I still stand by some of my points, but I realize now that some of the problems were out of the organizations control. I realize now that most of my grievances were more related toward the coachs underwhelming performance rather than the organization itself. I will say that anyone looking into this league will have to be prepared to be flexible for issues that may turn up.This league will have you constantly asking the question What am I paying for?Team rosters come out late, and when they do come out, our team was not assigned a coach, with the organizers sending all the parents on the team an email telling us to figure out who is going to coach among ourselves, which was its own challenge in itself. Some teams did not have a game schedule until the morning of their first game. You have to buy your own uniform and ball for practice. Coaches have to pay for their own equipment and have to coordinate with the parents which days are practice days. In our case, this was a parent that had volunteered to be the coach, so this was an extra burden placed on them that they didnt sign up for initially. If you have multiple kids in different age brackets, and the practice/game times conflict with each other **after** youve paid registration, you do not get a refund if you want to pull out due to the conflict, which compounds the frustration of not having any set schedule sent out by the organizers. Keep in mind, we didnt have a practice schedule until a parent volunteered to coach, which is past registration.Perhaps we were unlucky and there were things that were beyond the organizers control occurring behind the scenes, but there was no communication other than the emails for our schedule and to figure it out.We will not be signing up next year.
My 14 year old daughter has been in this league for several seasons. She been on different teams and had different coaches, and she has really enjoyed the experience. This league is about team and player development, and allows all children on the team to play at every game. One season our team didnt have a coach so the director of Mesa Youth Sports, Gene, stepped in and coached for us. He is so positive and kind and great at teaching skills and amazing encouragement. Ive never seen someone so positive and upbeat with coaching and interacting with children! Weve had a great time, I even volunteered to coach this last season, and I had a wonderful time. The parents are all very kind and supportive and easy to work with. Everyone wants everyone else to have a great time. The games are positive and enjoyable!I highly recommend Mesa Youth Sports!
Ive enjoyed the league. Ive gotten to spend quality time with my son coaching his flag football team, and have been able to sign all my kids up at a very reasonable price. Coaches are volunteer parents, and vary in quality, but generally everyone is out there to have fun and learn.
I have had 3 of my boys(aging from 6 to 11) play flag football in this league for a few seasons now, and I have also coached. My boys have really enjoyed playing. One of them has fallen in love with the sport now and plays it all the time with his buddies. They have all learned a lot. I love that the league is very affordable and the location of the games are close. I dont have to go to Crossroads or Discovery park which are a lot further for me. Well be signing our kids up in this league for years to come.
This is a fantastic league. Such a good positive environment for kids to learn the basics and fundamentals of sportsmanship. I have seen my daughter and my son have both learned so much for Volleyball and football. It is a very team oriented league.
We had a great experience with soccer through this league. Experience will vary based on volunteer coach, but we got a knowledgeable, skilled coach, and it was an awesome experience!
My four children have participated in various sports through Mesa Youth Sports and we have loved our experience with this organization! We have had a great time practicing and playing games so close to home and getting to know new friends and neighbors. There are occasional hiccups, which is to be expected, but the owner and his crew do a wonderful job of managing circumstances that are often out of their control. Because of MYS my children have been able to participate in affordable sports programs and have a great time with great coaches. We love Mesa Youth Sports!
Im so glad I found this league! I have several kids and they are all interested in different sports. We looked at i9 and they were charging over $150 per child! Thats $600/season for my four kids!!! Mesa Youth Sports only costs me $45/child and all four of my kids play for $180/season. Also, this is a very fun and positive environment for my kids. We played in other leagues where parents were cursing and yelling on the sidelines. We just dont hear that here.I also love that they have 4 locations throughout the valley so I dont have to travel far for games. Also, they offer 5 sports at EACH LOCATION so my kids can play all their different sports at the same location. Our experience at Mesa Youth Sports has been a blessing and that is why we have played with them for over 6 seasons!
Very unorganized and poorly ran. Pay the extra for other leagues like NYS. Sends emails out about when rosters, schedules and such will be release by a certain time and date to only have nothing. There were no coaches for the team and parents just basically got an email saying figure it out between you guys and take us off the email list. The season has not started yet and at practice some of the parents have made poor comments about the league. Simple questions asked couldn’t even be answered. Asked a simple question following instructions in their email and was told the email said a different thing. When shown what they said the subject changed. After this season is done it will be our first and last season. Do youself a favor to save time and head ache.. look for another league..All the positives reviews are mostly about the parents who make it a positive experience for the kids not the league/organizer. Its easy to see 5 stars but the Parents who is coaching the reviewers kids who gave 5 stars deserve that 5 stars not the league/organizers.
Completely unprofessional owner and unorganized organization. Gene told us what we wanted to hear so we would bring our entire team to his league. After we got everyone registered we found out quickly that new coaches and teams do not matter. Rules change every week, have no details and somehow are supposed to cover kids 4 years of age all the way to 12 years of age. The tournament Gene promotes is not that, it is basically whatever Gene wants to do. There is no other ranking system anywhere like the one Gene uses. I have played, coached or been part of sports teams for 35 years and I would find somewhere else to take your child.******UPDATE based on Genes response 5/22/18******First of all, the boys have always played basketball and wanted to try football so Im not sure where Gene came up with the story that we are coming from another football league. His actual response was that he would put the laterals/pitches up for a vote to all the coaches, what Gene did was only talk to returning coaches(which there was 1 in our age group). I am not the only coach that feels as if Gene does not care about new coaches, I had two of the other seven coaches state to me at games that Gene favors his returning coaches and/or does whatever he feels like doing. We did question why we were not included in the vote AS GENE TOLD US WE WOULD BE.There was a complaint from one mom who for some reason sat on our side and her son got hurt because two kids ran into each other. The referee actually told me on the field her son should have been called for a penalty because he tried to run over my player in a flag football game. SHE was the aggressor to my parent and everyone saw it. I spoke with Gene directly on the phone and my actual response was that I didnt have anything to respond to my parent or my other coach because what he was told was half truths. Not sure where Gene made up the response that I said were competitive coaches. I called to address any concerns Gene had and he had no actual TRUE complaints, his words to me.There may have been a parent who emailed in, not sure, I dont monitor the parents. We kept all the issues away from the players and parents. We focused on teaching and having fun with the boys. Every parent on my team has come to me and addressed concerns with the way the league is handled and asked that we do not play in this league again. And honestly, if were such bad, poor sport coaches/team, why do we have parents from teams we play ask during the season if we have room on our team for their child??????
Great league! Affordable! Have been coaching in this league for a year now and always organized and well run!
I have been coaching volleyball almost 2years and it has been great experience for my kids and me.
Ive participated and coached in a number of youth leagues in my life. I have never experienced one as dysfunctional and unorganized as this one. Rules are vague and inconsistent from week to week. Leadership is non-existent. Worse than that, leadership is not trustworthy and allows others to manipulate the season. The organization needs a complete overhaul.
I have loved all the different sports my kids have been able to learn, theyve won some and lost some, but kids get a great chance to perfect the basics, the location and prices for the for east valley in Mesa cant be beat. Its a great community program.
This league is a joke. My olser son was the umpire for the first game... the next 2 or 3 games a parent did it. Its a joke what am i paying for.The umpire you paid for took a break and never finished the game... a parent had to finish umpiring the game. Ridiculous
First season and last season. Horrible experience with basketball. Coach doesnt show up for game or practice. Practice is 20 min from my house. Mys tells me they cant refund but can credit towards next season. Ummm no thank you.Boys ages 10-12 have no rules. They can travel and foul. you name they can do it. Just doesnt seem age appropriate. They seem very busy with all the different sports, so maybe we just had a bad experience. But I personally wouldnt recommend them.
