For anyone who enjoys presidential history, this is a fun location to visit and tour. Theres a small museum on site with friendly and helpful staff. Unfortunately the main house is currently closed to visitors, hence only four stars.
We enjoyed our visit, although it was in November and some buildings were closed. Definitely watch the video on youtube about President Garfield!
Despite Covid-19 the park is welcoming guests, masks inside Visitor Center. Virtual tour of the home was excellent!Highly recommend this historic site.
Eventhough the Garfield home was closed, the national park was open and it was terrific. The visitor center was also open with a wonderful virtual tour of the home. A great and must see visit.
It’s an underrated site that is beautiful and has tons to see. The tour is great especially Joan. Love the artifacts and walking paths. Video is great to start.
A wonderful place to visit! A truly historical place! This is a part of history! Mentors most prized attraction!!!
This place has some amazing facts...check it out
So much history! This historic site is dogfriendly and it even has a doggie poop station outside the visitors center by the parking lot next to the historic sign. This site has the home, windmill, carriage house and the farm with park of it converted to the parking area. My favorite part is the story of the porch where Pres Garfield made many speeches. I went into the visitors center to pick up some brochures to find that there is a museum in there. I walked through it real fast, took about a minute because my dogs were in the car. I looked like the museum walks through when Pres Garfield was sworn into office to the day he died. It is such an interesting historic site. I really like the audio tour where a QR code and be scanned which will direct to the link online with the audio file. I listened to several of them... The porch, windmill, carriage house and farm. Very interesting. Highly recommend listening to the audio files.
Amazing big trees! Loved walking the grounds. Great place for a picnic. Informative signage.
Although the house was not offering guided tours, the museum and estate were clean, quite pretty, and informative.
Very cool, historical site! Loved that we could tour on our own by calling a number that would give us info on each site
Awesome experience! We had a great tour of the Garfield House.
Small piece of history just to the East of Cleveland. Take a step back in time with a tour or just wander the ground for a bit. The artifacts get changed occasionally so it’s good to stop back and learn something new about Garfield! While there is no official presidential library, Mrs Garfield did set up a memorial library in the house, which you can see on the tour as well. Tour guides are knowledgeable and fun! Great piece of history for any history buffs out there!
Very nice park with a nice phone walking trail.
Very detailed and well-done museum about a little-known, but incredibly talented president. Lots of interpretive displays and very informative. Beautiful grounds and the home is beautiful. Well worth the visit.
This was a fantastic experience. We learned a lot about this lesser known or studied President. Our volunteer guide was super knowledgeable and interesting. The Presidents house was amazing and the NPS have developed the grounds and museum in a very welcoming and user friendly way. I am very glad that we visited, and will definitely visit again the next time were in the area.
I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this was! For a family with young kids traveling on a budget, it was great! We did not pay for the tour. You can go through the museum and walk the grounds for free. Informative little museum, good movie, and a free audio tour of the grounds using my cell phone was all we needed. Bathrooms are in a separate building (with plumbing) and they have the kind of water fountain where you can fill up your water bottle. Gift shop was small. Expect to spend more than one hour (if you dont do the tour).
Picked up my Senior NPS pass. Clean facility, pleasant, efficient staff.
Wonderfully preserved national historic place. A well appointed & presented museum separate from the house. The guided tours are informative and very interactive. The guides are very well read & readily answer questions with ease and assuredness.
Like many who dont know whats right in their backyards of where they live, I happened upon this by accident. The area is very pretty. Although I didnt tour the inside, the buildings are kept up very nicely.
Enjoyed walking around the grounds and learning more about our 20th President.
Special little details in this historic home. The tour and grounds are informative.
Unbelievable. Favorite presidential home / library visited so far. The parks department staff is extremely knowledgeable.
Very cool.Id go back.
Historic site, that offers public toursCarole, our guide, was great. She was very knowledgable and answered all our questions. If youre in NE Ohio I highly reccomend taking the house tour. Im looking forward to returning and taking the behind the ropes tour.
Fun experience. Beautiful house
Will go back, when its open. Such a beautiful home!
Very interesting exhibits about Pres. Garfield and his talented widow. Great 19th century technology: Windmill, gas well, etc. Get the National Park lifetime pass if you are a senior citizen.
The tour was well done. Its rare to have so many original items in the house.
Carole is one if the best guides Ive seen in a presidential home. Amazing. And the exhibits being out the human side of this man and family, which is important because we dont get as many books and historical coverage of him as we do of some other people.
I past this home over and over through the years and finally stopped to see if they had tours. I was very impressed with the 45 minute tour of the home. The home is beautiful and the guide was very knowledgeable of the history of Garfield and the family. It is well worth the time to see this memorial home.
Great setting, hosting frequent fun events, the James A. Garfield historic site is well worth the visit. Nice visitors center, and the tour through President Garfields home is very interesting. Check out the Civil War reenactment, every summer, and experience a Civil War encampment, complete with music, storytelling, and warfare demonstrations. See President Abe Lincoln, and General U.S. Grant, and support local Cub Scouts, selling refreshments!
Lots of history, our kids enjoyed it they are 10, 12, & 14. The park rangers were nice & our tour guide (a retired cop- I cant remember her name) was very nice & well spoken & knowing about our tour we really enjoyed her tour of the house.
Great place for history, so close and Ive never been!
The guide was very knowledgeable and the site rich in history. I would recommend this place to all that enjoy history.
It was very AWESOME, interesting & very informative. Really enjoyed our tour guide.
If youre a history buff this is a must see. The tour guide was knowledgeable and gave the group a fantastic experience.
Arrived there half an hour before closing, but the Park Service rangers were very accommodating and helpful. They gave us a synopsis of the site. We quickly looked at the museum and visited the grounds--very interesting windmill. I also got a stamp for my national parks passport.
The home and grounds were just beautiful. Everyone was very knowledgeable and answered your question. The visitor center was comfortable place to wait for your tour with displays to look at. Bathrooms were clean.
Neat place, lots of history here, tour the grounds and buildings. Knowledge staff will answer your questions
The tours are SO interesting. Imagine a PRESIDENTS home in our little Mentor. You will learn a LOT. Mrs. Garfield did not decorate for Christmas........
Very clean park. Amazing staff. A great place to visit. Take a tour of the house walk around. Explore. Picnic tables all around great place to be
Ive been here on a field trip. Neat place, they give tours.
Very peaceful and beautiful.
Amazing house! Very good with the students and also interactive park rangers! Good work!!
Great place to learn about President Garfield. Civil War re-enactment was going on during my visit.
This presidential home is very well maintained and the park rangers give thorough explanations during the tour.
Great historical park. Tours on the hour. They have a phone tour you can start any time. Waiting for the leaves to start turning to visit again. Oct has a lot of events coming up as well
Our tour guide was phenomenal. She was full of knowledge and info. She answered almost every question thrown at her, which was impressive. The property and house itself, is amazing. The house is full of amazing artifacts and pieces of the Garfield family’s life that make it such a personal feeling when you’re there. I loved it.
Great day, fun learning. Kids had to.really explore to win badges. They learned so much without even.knowing they were learning!
Ive been participating in the Garfield civil war living history event for the last few years. Beside a enjoying the event, this historic site is amazing. The grounds themselves are immaculate. And the Garfield himself is taking a step back in time. The park rangers are professional and courteous at all times. And the volunteers are extremely knowledgeable about the life of James A. Garfield. Its a great place to go and spend time with the family, while learning about President Garfield.
Great to have this piece of American history so accessable. Beautiful grounds and a comprehensive look into the life of a former President.
Great museum with a lot of historical artifacts! The staff is very knowledgeable and the tour is very informative. Really make you feel like your back in the early 1900s.
I got to enjoy the last tour of the day... Our guide was so informative... So much history right in our back yard.
Loved learning about the 20th president! House was beautiful!
We have been to several presidential homes, which were free. Why is there a fee at Garfields home? If I was going to pay for any presidential home, it would have been Lincolns.
Awesome bit of history. Learned a lot of things
Beautiful house, the furniture and fixtures of the day are fantastic. Lot of history for the family
This house is so nice its totally worth checking out
Well presented and persevered. Definitely worth a day trip or stopping by if youre in the area.
Great place to learn about our nations 20th President. Park rangers are very knowledgeable and friendly.
Nice park. The Rangers are very knowledgeable and friendly.
A must see historical site when in Cleveland, Ohio! Beautiful home, grounds and important information about President Garfield!
Great tour guide, beautiful location. Had a know it all on the tour, retired teacher guide put him in his place quickly and really enjoyed the rest of the tour.
Its a National Historic Site well worth seeing. Guides tell of President Garfields life and times, while leading tours through the mansions which is restored to its original state.
Really nice nicely done historical location. The house has many original pieces and the grounds are large with picnic tables.
I dont go for the tours, I like to walk the park and spin Pokestops. The concerts that the park hosts are excellent and free.
Lovely National Historic Site with tons of exhibits to peruse. The tour is a must to see the house, and the NPS did a wonderful job restoring the house to its original grandeur. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, and the grounds are well kept and maintained beautifully. I would highly recommend coming here to learn more about one of our nations presidents.
Such a welcoming place. The grounds are well maintained with plenty of places to sit and a lot of placards to read about the different structures on the grounds. The docents and tour guides are impressive! I took the tour of the home and was very impressed with how well prepared they were in answering questions. Carole was very very good. The tour of the Garfield home is not to be missed. Mrs. Garfield had excellent tastes in decor, and the interior of the home is incredible. The library, dining room and smuggery where my favorite rooms! This is a not to miss site if you are in the area! I promise you will not be disappointed.
Great National Historic site. Mary was an awesome, knowledgeable and respectful of the site guide
The history of this home and the grounds is amazing. The family wanted to have it as a monument and memorial after their mother died and they donated everything with 80% of the real belongings in the home and the other 20% is all period pieces (and fake food ^.^ ). We went for a regular tour and it was $10pp but that fee is avoided with a National Park Pass. They offer specialty behind the scenes tours by appointment on Saturday mornings. The guide we had in the home, Barbara, is a volunteer but was insanely knowledgeable and had a real passion for everything she was telling us! I walked in with almost zero education about James Garfield and his family so as we asked questions Barbara would get more and more excited about answering them. They offer tours every 45 minutes and thats about how long it will take you to get through the home. The visitors center also has a video, a bunch of artifacts, including the bed he died on, and a small gift shop.It was an awesome experience! I will definitely be back for the specialty tours!
Excellent experience with kids, super nice rangers. Library was worth seeing
We had a lovely visit and a really knowledgeable guide. Most everything in the house belonged to President Garfield furniture pictures decorations etcIt was a great way to spend a rainy day.
Nice place to visit
It was my first visit, and I really enjoyed myself. Our guide was excellent, she is so knowledgeable about the Garfield family and the history of their home. She was also very gracious about accommodating those of our group with wheelchairs. 5 stars!
Loved the guided tour, just wish wed had more time to linger in each room to explore more thoroughly! Im certain Id have had far more questions!!
Great place to learn of a great American president and family. He had a fantastic wife.
Very interesting and informative. The staff was very friendly and accommadating.
Beautiful home in a beautiful neighborhood
Fantastic behind the ropes tour. Joan was entertaining and informative.
Beautiful architecture! Serene grounds. Tour was comfortable and informative. $7 over 15 tickets. Great stop. Tour is around 45 min -1 hr. You can explore some areas outside the mansion. No touching allowed, just be wary with kids.
This site is beautiful in the fall. So many colors in the trees. My soon had a blast at the encampment.
One of the best house tours Ive ever been on.Not only was the house beautiful, but the tour guide was so knowledgeable and personable. I would highly recommend visiting the Garfield house if you have even the remotest interest in US History.
Fabulous staff! Everyone is knowledgeable, friendly and kind. Great place to spend the day with the family.
Been here twice really depends on your guide . But really nice .
This was the home of President James A. Garfield, who was assassinated in 1881. The site includes his superbly maintained home, with 90 percent original items; the carriage house where he ran his 1880 campaign for president; an excellent small museum in a transformed carriage house; a windmill; and several outbuildings, such as a caretakers house, barns, chicken coop, and more. The museum is free, and the house tour is about $7. The tours are absolutely excellent: The rangers are immensely knowledgeable, and provide a great overview of the life of Garfield as well as his family after his death.
Its quite a place. Garfield had quite the wife who pretty much built a huge addition on the house as memorial to her husband. They said it was the first presidential library. Good experience.
Well preserved farm house from the late 1800s. Be sure to take the tour a the guide was very knowledgeable
A great place to visit for presidential history. It is one of the better national monuments. Dont miss this site if you are in the area!
Lovely historical buildings and structures
Definitely a treasure to visit if you are in the area.
Beautifully maintained property. The interpretation is interesting and staff is welcoming and knowledgeable.
I went to the Civil War Weekend event here and it was extremely interesting. People were dressed in clothing of the era and would act and roleplay as such. They had it set up as if you were walking through a camp in the civil war time. This is a great activity for parents or kids interested in civil war history! :)
Very friendly staff and well kept grounds.
Very well maintained, interesting, informative. Lets hope enough of us learn from our past, and vote accordingly, so we all dont have to suffer the consequences of willful ignorance.
