First, I didnt like the lack of directions. They need arrows to show the next steps of the museum in the beginning. Now, the great things about the museum. FREE PARKING was great. There are little boxes that show different clips of black history leading up to the entrance. You can see the outside where Martin Luther King was shot. There was attractions from slavery to the bus boycotts to Bloody Sunday.Be prepared to walk! Bring comfortable shoes! After the museum, you can go across the street to another part of the attraction so there is plenty of walking. It was a great experience!
This place does a flawless job of converting the location of one of Americas most tragic civil rights events into a deep and meaningful presentation of what it was all about from a holistic perspective. The museum doesnt pull any punches and the exhibits showcase an emotional narrative of what Black Americans have endured (are enduring) in the United States.Across the street from the Lorraine Motel the museum continues into the building where Martin Luther King Jr.s shooter was located. Similar to the JFK museum in Dallas, the exhibit offers alternative theories to the mainstream shooter narrative (in this case, James Earl Ray) and asks those reviewing the information to draw their own conclusions.Somber, insightful and a must see when youre in Memphis.
Great place to stop by if you are in town. Very educational and informative. Plus the gift shop has a lot of great items as well!
While visiting friends they asked if we would like to visit the museum and of course we were excited to do so. The museum itself was a wonderful experience but from the time we entered your staff was very rude. So much so that it embarrassed the friends we were visiting whom might I add is a cop in that city. The first rude person was the lady who checked to see if you had anything on you. My daughter took what she thought was everything out of her coat but didnt realize she had left her case for her glasses in there. The lady said when they ask you to take everything out of your pockets that means everything not only was she rude but she also embarrassed my daughter. Moving on to the counter to pay, the first lady there after we paid and she was giving directions was saying it rude because we started to go the wrong way I assume. It was 8 of us total at 17 dollars per person. As we were waiting for the little movie that they show, our friend asked the guide that came out how long until the next show, she said very rude, its on the sign and pointed up. The reason he didnt see it is because he was standing under it at the time. At that point I can honestly say, I had had enough and wanted my money back to leave but decided to not allow ignorant people to ruin my son and 2 daughters opportunity to see in person what they have only heard about. As the film ended and you start to exit with the march the guide said yall come on around. Keep around that wall that for the life of me I dont know why they put it there and some more things that I forgot that she said. We just looked at each other and our friends said I dont know whats going on today. While the museum itself is great it would have been the best experience had there been polite staff.
This was a great opportunity to learn about our history! Very interactive and an awesome learning experience for civil rights and Dr. King. Well worth the trip and to be that close to history was amazing. Every child and family should bear witness to this museum and see what you read about in history books. Very important trip for my family.
Jaw dropping. Make sure you mark off at least two hours to truly take it all in. We went early to miss the rush and it was worth it. Really well done retelling of the horrible times that we were and are still going through.
It was important that I visit the location that MLK was assassinated and feel the impact of history and its cultural importance. Now more than ever, Dr. King’s legacy is a testimony to generations of Americans fight for freedom, and standing among history I was moved by what came before my generation. A must visit for any history buff or simply to glimpse a small windows of time.
Especially given whats going on in the U.S. in 2020, this is a museum that should be required visiting for all citizens of the country. The $17 admission felt a little steep, but the exhibitions are very well-presented and informative. You cant enter the room Dr. King stayed in the evening before he was assassinated, but you can see it, maintained to its 1968 appearance.
Highly recommend! This was an amazing educational experience and I am so glad we took the time to see this piece of history. All of the staff was was so friendly and personable. The wait wasnt bad. Even with Covid restrictions, it was still easy to get through. If you dont make a reservation through the website online, it is easy to purchase tickets at the gate and still get in right away. It says 1.5 hours on the website, but plan for much longer if you like to read and want to watch the various videos in each exhibit.
Loved the exhibits, super informative. Very strong message. So much history in this building. Believe I learned more in this trip than I did in World History. Everything is super descriptive and well displayed. Great way to burn a few hours.
Lots of content. They had films and interactive exhibits. So much information. It was a little difficult with a potty training toddler. Only one restroom in the lobby and and one at the end of the main museum. Would have liked to see something for younger children. They did have several books in the gift shop for all ages. Overall a well curated experience.
Museum was well organized in chronicle order. The information was presented with lots of multimedia items. Visited during CoVID and protocols were sound and being followed. Great experience and hard recommend.
Also consider visiting Jacqueline Smith, who has held a non violent protest across from the museum for over 32 years. Her perspective as the last tenant of the Lorraine Motel (forcibly removed in 1988, to allow for the museum to be built) & views on gentrification are incredibly important to consider.“The great glory of American Democracy is the right to protest for right”
Very nice exhibits. Very informative. Friendly staff. Excellent discounts for active duty, Veterans and seniors. Well worth the money.
Amazing place to learn about priceless history of our country. The stories touch your heart and change your perspective. I loved visiting this museum. Well done!
Amazing experience. One could easily spend hours here reading up on the history - We spent 2 hours here and it was not enough! The museum is very well done and I love how they turned the motel into the museum. It was mind blowing to me to see the exact spot MLK Jr was shot and the hotel room he stayed in. You have to visit the museum. Educate yourself. Be better.
A most powerful and enlightening experience. I could feel the presence of the past. I was on the verge of tears. The gift shop was nice. I do want to go again with a different set of friends to share history. Great time. Recommended.
I really enjoyed the physical exhibits like the Rosa Parks Bus, I Am a Man Protestors, and Rm 306. They helped bring the words of the museum to life. It’s a great museum, if you can only do one thing in Memphis, you should do this. I would plan on 2-3 hours.
Truly a must stop for everyone! Beautiful symbol for Dr. King’s Legacy! May his message of love and equality be an actuality one day soon!
The exhibits were absolutely wonderful, but the security guard at the check-in was very rude when I asked if she was sanitizing the box I put my metal objects into, and the staff was not enforcing masks or doing a good job at encouraging social distance. Stay away if you do not want to get COVID.
An important place to come to visit for everyone. Gotta have an open mind and know that while we have made progress we are still needing more. It’s been a few years since I went and I definitely need to go again. Also a great place to take kids because because they need to see and feel the history that impact us all. It’s not expensive and easy to do in an afternoon.
Bitter sweet experience.. Difficult to hear read and see the pain of black history especially in todays environment. The museum offered so much and it was greatly represented. God Bless Martin Luther Kings heat for fighting for our equal rights.
Definitely recommend everyone to stop by this spot. EYE OPENER. SO WE NEVER FORGET THE STRUGGLES OUR PEOPLE WENT THRU FOR OUR FREEDOM.
Had out of town guests so I took em here. It had been years since I last went & I was pleasantly surprised! It was a Sunday so the actual museum was closed. The {new to me} pillars with video & audio were a wonderful surprise! I learned a lot that day! & I love my Memphis!
Words can’t describe this museum. Wonderfully done. Great experience.
Thoroughly enjoyed everything about the museum! The attention to detail is great! So glad we took time out to go while we were in town!
This is a great place to go to learn about black history, its very touchin! I was shocked to see other races their and was taking it all in. Going to MLK room was awesome and sad at the same time. I think everyone need to and check this place out, its a goldmine of information.
I can go on & on about how wonderful this museum is. Im telling any and everybody this is a must see in person. So much information and the employees were all very nice. I was so moved to be able to view and take pictures of the last place Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was before his untimely death. But it dont stop there the other exhibits were absolutely awesome 22 different rooms and the knowledge its just blew my mind. Its a must see please take my word on it.
It was a super good experience! Eye opening and very intriguing to learn more about it all. You should check it out!
One of the best museums I have ever visited (and I visit a lot and work in many)... Interactive, keeping you engaged, great staff and overall telling an important story really well.
This is awesome and over whelming!!!! So much Black history that was missed in school. Im thankful someone took the time to put our history out in the open. Thanks
This museum chronologically takes the visitor through Civil Rights history, from the Middle Passage through MLKJs assassination. It is located in a repurposed Lorraine Motel, the site of his death. We learned so much and loved the experience. BUT be prepared for how long the experience is: The Google review said average time was 1.5 hours but we spent almost 3 hours there and only read about 1/3 of the words (and didnt stop at the gift shop or the legacy rooms). You could spend all day there if you wanted to really soak it all in. There is also no auditory assistance that I could see so if you have visual impairment or a slow reader it might be difficult, but maybe they have accessible options I dont know about. Physical accessibility is good--no stairs, mostly wide pathways, and places to sit every few exhibits. FYI there is also a thorough security check at the entrance and during the pandemic you will have to reserve tickets ahead of time for capacity purposes.
A thorough history lesson. I remember some of the things that happened years ago. I love the videos of MLK and others speaking. Everyone should have to know this part of history. Well worth the time.
Just wondering around Memphis taking pictures & turned the corner & saw a couple of old cars & a motel. It looked familiar so I walked & read the plaque. History is everywhere.
Very mind-blowing and educational experience I was very satisfied with the tour
A must see. Hard to take it all in in one visit with the life cause and work of such an extraordinary man. We were visiting from Texas and with the powerful movement happening around us wanted our children to have the opportunity to stand on this hallowed ground which deeply impacted them much more than just stories in their history books. Seeing video and bus recreations and classrooms and so many other strong visuals was just the kind of jolt their young incoming 3rd and 4th grade minds needed. For my husband and it was just a treasure of information and details beyond the history books. Truly dont leave Memphis without spending at least a few hours here.
This was great experience for us. My wife and I were teenagers during this horrific time in our countys history. Dr. King taught us all about humanity and civil rights. Long live his legacy for change and love for one another no madder of color, creed or origin.
I remember everything about that dark time in history, but from a different perspective, as I grew up in North Dakota. I learned a tremendous amount about the perspective of those who suffered through the worst of our countrys past.
This place is everything you could imagine and more. It is a look at the Civil Rights movement that everyone needs to see. The staff is courteous, professional and kind. The exhibits are phenomenal. The emotion felt when looking at the room Dr. King stayed in was palpable. This is a MUST SEE!
Emotional, impactful, amazing. My whole life I have read, seen in movies, learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and the civil Rights movement, but to stand right there, looking up at where he was assassinated was incredibly moving. This museum is so much more than just a motel, plan to spend several hours slowly walking through the exhibits, reading, listening, learning. Dont forget the boarding house across the street. And as with the rest of Memphis, incredibly friendly and helpful. Im already planning on when I can go back.
This was the most amazing experience ever. The exhibit were sotarol in full of factual documentation. The replicas of buses, the sit- ins, the Freedom Riders, the pictures, the voices of actual people was just amazing. I am so happy that I was able to provide my son and his girlfriend this experience. Across from the actual Lorraine Motel is another part the Civil Rights Museum. You can actually see the room where James Earl Ray shot Martin Luther King jr. The actual tub and bathroom and window is still there the small room where the bed and couch is still there. It brings out all kinds of feelings in you. It makes you understand why as a people we must continue to demand Justice and equality.
Perhaps one of the most essential museums in America. We spent three hours there with our family, including a seven and a nine year old. There is a good deal of reading to do. There are several videos and large artifact type exhibits. Well worth a visit!!!
My gf surprised me with the Greenbook exhibit at the museum.. it was amazing.. people like Mr Green make the world a better place.. #loveandstrengthwillwin..
Gives a lot of history. you could easily spend all day there if you want to read everything, but probably takes about 90 minutes to walk through and see everything. the staff are very knowledgeable.
I am not able to give it 5 stars because when we visited, it was closed.
NCRM does a great job in capturing our civil rights history . It forces us to think about our present and future. A must see for all Americans. Long live Dr. King.
An excellent and informative museum. Dont miss it if you are in Memphis
One of the best museums I have seen!Really incredible description of important historical events! The museum and staff is also being extra cautions with covid-19 and there are hand sanitizing stations everywhere.
Very informative and interactive. I spent 3 1/2 hours walking through and still wasn’t able to take in all the information exhibited. I would love to come back and take more time through the museum. The covid-19 precautions were great, too.
So important to visit. We still have to work on equal rights for everyone.
The Museum is True to Heart. Its amazing how well everything was displayed and well presented. I would do it again! Its a must see! The staff is AMAZING!
History at its best... Well recommended..
Has pretty much the WHOLE history of how POCs slowly got their rights. It was pretty cool, you can also see the place Dr. King was shot.
Absolutely a must to see!!! Super friendly staff!!! Its sad to see the sinful depravity of man, but it gave me even more reason to share The Gospel of Jesus, (The Only Way, The Truth and The Life), to repent of your sins and trust in the perfect finished work of Christ to earn your way to Heaven not your own works. Sin issue not a skin issue.
It was wonderful to teach my daughter some of OURStory
Arrived there only to be told that half of the tour was cut off .when asked why no one knew the answer. Would have loved to at least stand in the same place martin stood in but was a no go. Was charged for full tour but only got to see half really wanted to see the mustang that oswald was driving and look threw the window where the shot was said to have came from.and who ever recreated the room.Mr king was staying in could have did a better job recreating the room .just felt like it was just missing at least some of his clothesYou know personal that would give you that fill that he actually stayed in the room. They had a ashtray with cigarettes buts it look like someone took them out the pack a just broke them there where a couple of plates but no clothes no shoes no nothing just an empty room.
This is a must visit if you are in the vicinity. So much history, heartbreak and triumphs in this one place. You will benefit immensely from all the knowledge you will gain about civil rights and race relationships. Just wow! This great landmark is much more than just the site of Martin Luther King Jr’s assasination, it tells the whole story of America and its belief system changing over the course of history. This place will move you...and quite possibly change you. Prepare to spend at least 3 to 4 hours or more to go through its immense collection. You will not regret it.
This visit was an awesome experience. I hadnt been since i was a child and it felt great to bring my children. There is so much history to be absorbed. It was very inspirational. I highly recommend you go if you havent yet
Really enjoy this and learned a lot. I realize I didn’t take pictures because I was reading all the information about what took place but it’s worth the visit.
Amazing. It was a beautiful experience. This is something every student should have to experience. Keep up the great work!
This Museum has helped me understand what a hot mess OUR Nation had created here in the South. I had never heard of the Green Book or imagined what that must have been like to need that to make travel somewhat safe for so many years.
Loved it. Each time I return theres something more. If you havent been please go.
An outstanding place, brings back memories when I was nine years old. I love it
It was more than amazing and emotional. Definitely a must see if you go to Memphis. All people need to go here regardless of race. This is history!!!!
Excellent historical lessons. Very well designed. Our tour guide was Amazing!!
If you are not moved after touring this landmark, then you are not human. It is so well done and the flow of the museum is excellent. If you go to Memphis...visit Beale Street, of course...but do not miss this!
We loved this place and the history it teaches.... I shedded tears reading about the pain our people endured.... This is a great way to teach some of the history of African American people.... Loved it.... I will bring my grandkids when they are a little older....
Very informative and interesting. There were things about the Civil rights era that I never knew about. There were things about the assassination of Dr King that I didnt know about. I would suggest that all our young black people go and learn more about their heritage. Things that are not taught in school.
Worth the $17 to learn about how African Americans have gained their civil rights in the harsh American culture.Very informative and appeared to be factual information with occasional bias/opinion.The gift store is large with many different types of gifts. The museum is majority about African Americans and does not appear to consider other cultures or women (minimal mentioning if any).
When I visited, it was still closed due to COVID-19. I hope to get back someday to be able to see the whole thing.Just being able to see things from the outside was pretty powerful in itself. As we continue to fight the same battle that MLK was fighting in his day, I think its important for us to remember him and the message that he preached!
2.5 hours wasnt long enough. Interesting and well done.
Learned a lot about our history. Keep in mind that some of it is objective but the information is there to learn. Great experience but sad at the same time.
WOW, WOW this place was a Dream Come True for me. I was truly excited about being there with mix emotions feelings.️️️As to why it became a place for me to visit Was sad but I quickly realized that MLK wouldnt have change any of the history. But it still was touching I was 4 years old when Dr.Martin Luther King was sassinate. Now at 56 years old I am bless to be able to go and stand on history I never thought that I would ever be to visit the place and be that close to it. But thanks to my husband I was giving the opportunity to do so. ** I encourage everyone to go visit the National Civil Rights Museum. Its worth the drive to Memphis Tennessee. I will go back very soon Amen ️️️. **THIS PLACE IS AN FOREVER VISIT PLACE I will be back very soon...️️️.
Lots of history. Modern technology in use. Music and the education through the self guided tour is second to none.
Powerful museum housed in the Lorraine Hotel where Dr Martin Luther King was assassinated and the house across the house where the shot came fromcould easily spend 2-3 hours here.Free parking and informative guides
It was a serious time. You can feel the energy .You should visit for yourself.
This is a must see. Everyone should make a trip to this very important historic museum. There was no expense spared in creating every moment and display. If you didnt live through this tumultuous time period or even if you did, the documentation of the events are as relevant now as they were then.Highly, highly recommend seeing this. A trip to Memphis will be incomplete if you miss it.
Very educational and informative on the civil rights movements.
Well done, very informative. Heavy subject matter, but incredibly important to understanding our country.
An absolutely incredible museum. Very necessary, especially as the U.S. faces intense political debates regarding Black lives in current times. The staff are kind and knowledgeable, the flow of the exhibits are excellent, and the preservation of the hotel in which MLK Jr. was assassinated is immaculate. I would sincerely recommend everyone to visit here if they have the opportunity.
A beautiful museum, full of so many amazing exhibits and things to make you think! Seeing the room Dr. King was in before his murder is humbling and a must see for everyone. This museum isnt just a day out, its an experience.
The National Civil Rights Sacred ground. Prayers for peace.I search for the words to express the fullness of emotion that this museum has evoked. Beginning with the middle passage and continuing through the Civil Rights Movement of Dr. King, to Malcolm X and Huey Newton, to Stonewall, Cesar Chavez, Ferguson and beyond, what we have done to our brothers and sisters, to ourselves... is almost incomprehensible; still, there is and has always been hope and love, even in struggle and pain. People of virtue and valor making a difference, sacrificing.
I love this place Im very glad that my kids were able to experience the legacy of Dr.King
Allow plenty of time! We had 4 PM tickets thinking an hour would be plenty. Had to sprint through the last half. Well worth a visit.
This was a great museum that allows you to experience a very important part of history.
Very well put together and informative, educational experience. Definitely worth the fee and social distancing, sanitized practices are done.
Everyone needs to go and see. Irregardless of political party, its history. Black folk need to know there history so that we can pass it on to our next generation. Take the kids
Must do in Memphis. Great exhibits and shows a side of American history we all need to be well aware of. Very visceral and a memorable experience. Budget time since there is a security check and long lines and youll want to make sure you dont have to rush through.
This is an incredible museum that should be visited by every American young and old. It is filled to the brim with history and artifacts dating back hundreds of years. You can easily spend all day here!
Facinating, a lot reading. Could have spent several more hours
Really interesting and historical place. You start off in with a short film then walk around the exhibit. The way it’s set up is cool because you kind of move through things in chronological order. Would definitely recommend everyone goes and visits. You learn so much.
So informative. It really gave me perspective on the struggles, horrible treatment, and cruelty suffered by so many African-Americans. I was just shocked at the incredible struggles these human beings faced everyday. The Green Book Exibit was very interesting to me. I have to say that the most touching was the Lorraine Motel exhibit. The place etched in many peoples minds of the horrible day Martin Luther King Jr. was assinated. It gave me chills. Such a tragedy. The NCRM should be visited by everyone. Its an eye opening experience. I highly recommend you set aside a few hours of your day to appreciate the well thought of the exhibits.
One of the most interesting museums Ive been to. They have found a very engaging way to teach the history of civil rights in the US.
Very informative and due to Covid, I was nervous. The museum took all precautions. There are sanitation stations and social distancing rules.
Really loved it, also happy there was too much attention for this. With this I mean that you dont need to pay to see this place! Great information that comes from the city. And if you want more info you can visit the museum.
Lots to see, I was able to understand much more of the history of civil rights. Lots of walking so bring comfortable shoes, eat before going we were there 3 hours and rushed to eat. Hope this help someone.
I had a great informative experience. Highly recommended.
A very moving museum and will remind you of the continuing struggle for equality and justice in America
The staff was a bit Snippy and several other visitors were RUDE. But besides that, exceptional place to visit as a family. I love the amount of knowledge I gain and more respect to many people who paved the way for our futures.
