PIGEON KEY IS OPEN !!!! The majority of the public is unsure if its open or not. We were told it was closed by half of the locals and different people we talked to. It is open and the most affordable excursion in the Keys... Ok its down right cheap!! The bridge is closed and under construction so the only way to get there is by boat. So for $12.00 for adults and even less for kids a person gets a boat ride on the Pigeon Key ferry to the island. So for $12.00 you get a boat ride there and back, use of the island if you want, a tour guide, and an enjoyable day. Theres bathrooms, running water, and electricity but thats it. Pack in your food, beverages, picknic, snorkeling gear, or fishing pole and make a day of it. The shortest visit is a bit over 2 hrs or you can stay all day. The tour guide we had was C.T. Rich. The passion she has for the island and its history is contagious. The knowledge she possess is remarkable. The story she tells is enjoyable, entertaining, and very educational. We packed our snorkeling gear and we were looking forward to getting wet, we never did though we just listened and walked around with C.T. We really enjoyed ourselves. The sad thing is right now is that most people dont understand that they are in operation. We were the only ones on the tour. I also dont think most people understand that its all inclusive $12.00, boat ride, tour guide, use of the island. Im certain that its the cheapest boat ride a person can take in the Keys. The Captains are great people as well and make you feel comfortable out and back. Its a must do. Bring your kids they will have a blast as well.

Tour is worth it! We spent a day in Marathon on Vaca Key and decided to take the afternoon to walk the 2 miles out to Pigeon Key via the old bridge that has been turned into a pedestrian+bike span . Pigeon Key was originally a work camp for the oil baron who built the railroad down to key west 100 years ago. It is a tiny island with a lot of interesting history. Island admission+tour $11/adult, less or free for kids. You do not have to walk out to the island. There is a ferry (the ferry dock is what the map for this place page shows). We walked out to enjoy the ocean views and took the ferry back.It also operates as a summer camp for kids (either as a day camp or multi day camp staying the night) to do various marine biology fun educational stuff that make sense in the Florida keys.Caveat: The 2 mile span of bridge connecting pigeon key may be facing its final days and could close as early as October of this year. The state does not want to pay to maintain it. Pigeon key is a non-profit and doesnt receive any useful amount of money from the state so how well they will be able to continue operating in the future is still to be determined. I wish them luck. It is a place worth preserving for historical value (and look at how many hurricanes it has survived).

We took the ferry here with the tour. It costs $12 per person and is suited for any age. The tour is not super thrilling but its alright. The guide is friendly and entertaining. It takes about 2,5 (including ferry back and forth) and you get some time by yourself to wander around the small island.

The ramp is closed for repairs. Took our bikes down the 2.4 mile bridge only to find that the off-ramp to get on Pigeon Key is closed for repairs. No one was working on it and it didnt seem in worse shape than the last time I visited. It seems like a way to get people to pay for the ferry that brings you to the island instead of walking or biking.

If your interested in the history of the railroad that Henry Flagler built to Key West then this a must visit. Pigeon Key was one of the work camps for the construction of the Seven Mile Bridge. They have some of the original buildings with information and artifacts about the bridge and the camp. Right now as of 6/17 the only way to get to the key is by boat as the bridge is undergoing Restoration and repairs.

We(Westminster Academy) spent three days on the island with our 5th grade field trip, the staff was amazing with our students. Extremely knowledgeable and very patient with all of our questions. I know the kids will be talking about this experience for years to come, they are already asking when can we go back! Thank you again so much for your hospitality, you all went above and beyond to make our stay one to remember!
