Brilliant live jazz bands, fabulous atmosphere, great selection of drinks and food. Thoroughly enjoyable night each and every time.

Love this place. Been around for year and years and for good reason.This club costs £5 to get in but its worth it, they hand pick some of the best jazz bands arround to preform. This a cosy warm place. So book a table early as they go fast!!

Really lovely atmosphere and clientele. Brilliant acoustics and live performance. Server (David) was extremely friendly and helpful. Service was swift despite having a full house. Food was reasonably priced and tasty. Would definitely recommend.

I went there to see a band Id never heard called The Dirty Bomb they played some great music and I even had the chance to get up with them for a quick jam after a long time not playing the drums long story. The staff were great and the nachos were really good. All in all a brilliant night out and recommend going. PS if youre a musician every 1st Monday of the month is an open jam.

Great vibe, the band were amazing. Just a really classy venue. You can go alone, with a date or a group of friends, either way you will have a good time. Friendly staff and a wide selection of drinks.

Fantastic little place hidden away like most of the gems in town. Great live music and happy hour with free pizza! A warning though if you want to sit down Id reserve a table as every single table in the place was reserved from 7:30 yesterday night.

Full disclosure - Ive attended many times as a performer, and the staff treat us really well, and their pizzas are excellent. There is always a great atmosphere and everyone who comes to enjoy a night of live music has a big smile on their face from start to finish. I always recommend this to people visiting Manchester!

I love this place. Ive always had a good night here. You can get table service of you reserve a table far enough ahead. They have live bands most nights they are open, certainly on weekends. The atmosphere is great. They also do nice pizza. Will go again and again. Never disappoints. Theres parking in the area generally.

Went to see Mr Wilsons Second Liners here a while back - a brass band with a difference!Matt & Phreds is a great venue and had a good atmosphere but was so busy that night, its defo worth checking if you need to book.

Great jazz club! I visited on many occasions and each time had great time! Bands always deliver, atmosphere and sound is great and booze is cheap. £8 for drink, £15 for a bottle of wine - decide which suits you better!

Great club, great bands, great fun! Very pleasant and friendly staff (apart from the bouncers, but I guess they are not supposed to be pleasant...). Serves food, drinks and cocktails. If you want to have a table, book well in advance. Strongly recommended for a cracking night out!

A great place for a night out and the special offers for cocktails and / or pizza just adds to its attraction. Get in early though as seating is at a premium (unless you pre-book a table).

Awesome place! You can sit and relax with Jazz music or some Jam sessions with free entrance. They have happy hours if you buy 2 pints you have pizza free.

Fantastic brilliant bar! If you want your evening to include live music come here!A cosy bar in the heart of the northern quarter with great live music. Loads of space to hang with friends, and even if you cant make up to the front of the stage tv screens help you see the band even from the back of the room. Incredibly friendly and helpful staff. Great selection of wines and spirits. I recommend this bar to anyone visiting Manchester and wants a great night out. Can I give it 6 stars?

Weekdays are free entry! Call ahead if you want a table because they fill up quick! They also offer a pizza deal and happy hour however thats only well before the show. Overall a fun venue with great artists and good acoustics.

Great jazz and fusion live music in the evenings. A venue for drinks and listening but or can chat near the bar. Also incredibly underrated for its happy hours almost everyday where buying 2 drinks = a free pizza. good quality and can share some each round. Great place.

Staff were great as were the drinks. Argentinian jazz band were a little flat but the vibe made up for them. Id go back.

Great venue. The bar makes pretty good drinks but the live music is a real treat. They show different musians depending on the night with styles like soul or jazz. This make it even more interesting to come again.Would suggest to anyone who is interested in going to listen but just know it s not a place for a quiet chat.

Chinese marbles band were amazing last night, play there every six weeks, especially the drummer!

A great evening out wether in a couple or a group. Great music, good atmosphere. You can also order food, very tasty pizza and other snacks.

The jazz is great but there is no noise control of the crowd which is really disappointing for a dedicated music venue /jazz club. Even a curtain would help! They offer cheap food but there is no provision for dietary requirements and they often run out of entire genres of drinks (completely running out of cider and stouts). Best to sit near the front if you want to hear the music

Kitchen kept open a tad late for us to order a pizza, live eukele band was fun and the £5 entry fee kept it from being too crowded. Although we only spent 45mins here it was well worth it, bar staff very friendly, great experience.

2 fab entry free nights already spent here and I cant wait to come back again. Bar staff is so nice and polite and the atmosphere is just great. Theres a free pizza with 2 alcoholic drinks during happy hour But by the look of the kitchen and the look of the pizza Im glad I didnt get one, never, not even if Im starving. Easy to book a table here and you better call hours or days in advance to secure a front seat. Great love music of course

Matt and phreds is a institution. If you want to see some laid back jazz or dance like a manic to a brass band playing 90s dance tunes then this is the place for you. And intamite spot for a date or a place to have a laugh with friends it has it all.

Decent night spot, loved the live music but found that it became lost in the noise of the crowd in the back half of the room (not sure that theres a lot that could be done about that though). We arrived at 8pm on a Thursday, missing 2-4-1 cocktails by seconds. As a result our drinks cost a small fortune (entirely down to our own poor timekeeping). All of the tables at the front were reserved, or taken, well in advance of the band playing at 9pm. It would be worth booking ahead if you want to get a good view/sound.Club has a generally quite cool vibe, though there was a reasonable amount of pretentiousness on display, amongst some of the clientele, if you let that sort of thing bother you.

Best Jazz Bar in Manchester! Does lots of free entry nights with amazing musicians! Love Monday Jam nights too. Can be busy but you can always book a table beforehand.

Nice place. Good atmosphere. Mixed audience. Good band ( Dreamer). Enjoyed their set list. Like many venues it appears the sound engineer has partial deafness as the first set was way too loud for the size of the venue. The mix sounded a lot more pleasant downstairs in the toilets. As a musician I do worry about hearing damage. Volume level was better during the second set when the place filled up more.This band are quality musicians. Some good on pitch vocals from the ladies. Will return and do my best to support this venue, as they are in the minority by presenting decent bands.

Pretty much the go-to place for a good jazz night in Manchester! Drinks arent too expensive, atmosphere is awesome and theres always something going on. The food isnt exactly mindblowing but its super affordable. The only downside is it can get pretty busy at the weekends and on big events; but some might think thats a good thing :)

Excellent venue, we went to see the brass band jazz club here. Loads of dancing room, reasonably priced and toilets were clean. Everyone was just there for the music, just how it should be! Id definitely go again.

Brilliant! Tried to book late for sat night for partners 40th. They fit us in and we had a fantastic time. Most amazing live band too. Loads of fun. Waited on all night and the staff arranged the band to sing happy birthday to my partner who was on the toilet at the time and only heard back end of it . Such a fantastic night. Suffered for a few days after which goes towards the 5 ***** but that band!!!???? Wow! Awesome! Cant recommend this enough. No I honestly cant because if I do it will be so in demand that Ill never get a table again!!!

Loved the place and the atmosphere, great friendly staff always with a sincere smile on their faces.Yet one of the bands (Night Creatures or something like that) is really awful, they play really bad, especially the piano & trombone guy.Fortunately there are plenty of great vocalists around there, also a very good trumpet player, a remarkable harmonia young guy.

Dont go if you havent reserved a table at the front. The sound system isnt good at the back of the room, and they let people stand in front of the bar, which means you cannot see the musicians either. Otherwise, its a good space, nice staff, good sized pours, decent food and dependable jazz.

The staff is incredibly friendly here! Came here on a weekday with my girlfriend mostly to take advantage of the happy hour deal on drinks and managed to catch a show! Because it was a weekday it wasnt very busy so reserving a table wasnt necessary but I imagine it gets a lot more packed during weekends. The cocktails we got were great!

A great live venue with quite a variety of acts on.My experience is better acts are on during the week, and gets very busy at the weekend. Definitely check out whos on before dropping in as in my experience the quality varies. Always enjoyed the acts, just not all to my tastes.A handful of beers on tap to choose from, but a decent selection of beverages overall.Pizza is excellent value - my favourite bar snack.The staff are usually quite friendly too.
