For the first time we made a visit to Madison, Wisconsin not realizing the amazing features the city had to offer. The Capital building is a unique architectural design with a great deal of history. The grounds were beautiful and a whole lot of stair climbing. Recommend a visit if your going to Madison, Wisconsin
What a unique place! I discovered quite a bit of United States history here. And the paintings are beautifully painted. Lots of architecture to take a look at. And plenty of bathrooms on every floor. If youre looking for a place to sit down, there are leather chairs outside the supreme court courtroom on the second floor, in addition to benches outside the Capitol itself
The Wisconsin State Capitol is a beautiful building. The town and community surrounding the state capitol building is a cozy and warm home town feeling. This is crazy to me given that this is the state capitol. I love Madison. You know, other than the brutal winters. I need to take another trip to Madison during the summer or bet yet, during football season. Im a big fan.
As I imagine is tradition visiting a town for the first time, I took a stroll down town around the capital building. It was absolutely gorgeous! The entire town of Madison impressed the hell out of me, and Ill definitely be going back. The capital building is stunning, with great architecture and lots of small details to discover. Exploring inside was well worth it, and it was nice and air conditioned on the 85+ degree weather day. Will most definitely be going again to explore down town and the surrounding areas!
The Wisconsin State Capitol Building is a beautiful architectural site to see and tour anytime of the year. The rich history of the state is showcased very well throughout the grounds and building as well as the visitor center and museum.
*Pre Pandemic Review*Beautiful inside and out. Make sure you do the walking tour. Guide was informative and answered all questions.
The Capitol’s Art and Architecture Gives Great Aesthetic Pleasure - The capitol building is a marvel - built with over 40 different types of marble, great art throughout, and interiors lit by natural light. Definitely take the free tour. Afterward enjoy the downtown area. There are great nearby restaurants, small cafes, and a modern art museum. On Wednesday enjoy the Concert in Capitol Square and on Saturday morning enjoy the farmers market surrounding the capitol.
If you have never visited Madison before this should be your first sight seeing stop. You can tour it on your own but I would recommend taking one of the guided tours as it will definitely enhance your visit. This beautiful building is a great repository of Wisconsin history. The panoramic view from the top also is not to be missed.
This was an unplanned, fun and educational surprise. I happened to step inside the building after picking up a few items from the farmers market outside the building. I had noticed people meandering in and out of its doors on this particular Saturday morning that was also Veterans Day.After taking a peek at the beautiful interior, I noticed a young man at the information desk and found out a tour would take place in fifteen minutes. I thought, why not since I was already there. It turned out to be a fun, and interesting hour.To learn of the buildings 284.4 height, 100% Bethel White granite from Vermont and that Wisconsin was considered a bread basket state prior to being known as a dairy one. The interiors marble is comprised from Greece, Algeria, Italy and France as well as other materials from other states. The dome is one of the largest by volume in the world with a beautiful painting at the top called “Resources of Wisconsin.” There are 100 badgers in the capital as statues, in paintings, etc. You’ll tour the Governor’s Conference Room, The Supreme Court, Senate Chamber, Assembly Chamber, GAR Memorial Hearing Room and the North Hearing Room. The latter has walls that are of Italian marble. With in the walls we viewed snail fossils. Above, the skylight is made of leaded glass. Throughout the tour you will also observe original furnishings, paintings and their meanings and significance as well as the history and purpose of each room. After the tour you can take an elevator to another level, climb a short flight of stairs and step outside to view the city as well as the beautiful statues along the capitol dome.Overall: It was worth taking time out of my busy day to gain a little history on an interesting state.Take advantage of the free, tour narration booklet for even more information.
Wisconsins State Capitol has to be the most beautiful examples of architecture and design of any building. Located on a high point at the center of the isthmus between Lake Mendola and Lake Monona it has a spectacular view from the outside of the rotunda. The materials and art work used in the construction of the building is outstanding. Take the guided tour and enjoy the history of the building and artwork. The staff and people are great and friendly.
Its a great place. But it will be better when conservatives are in control. No masks
We have the most beautiful Capitol building! Public access year round, rooftop viewing available in the summer. Special displays and events, the positive list just keeps going! Very friendly staff, definitely worth a walkabout.
Used to be a decent place,I wasnt a fan of Walker, but with 3version in office, I miss Walker...sad
The most iconic structure in Madison, Wisconsin, the Wisconsin State Capitol area is a must visit if youre ever in town. A symmetrical 4 sided structure, the building is easily accessible from all directions. During the summer months, the area outside of the State Capitol gets turned into the farmers market on the weekend.
Historical place kept perfect till now, it is worth going there at times of free guided tours, you can google the tour timetables.
This is potentially the most beautiful state capital in the U.S. I also enjoy the ability to walk up so close to the Capital and see all the details placed into the structure. It is a great place to walk around and see all the locals walking downtown, jogging, and overall in a good mood. It is hard not to be in awe.
Stopped by during a road trip to Minneapolis. You can park along one of the sides for either 10 minute or 1 hour parking. We strolled about and it has information inside and a decent view outside as well. There are public restrooms available throughout the building.Adding a few more pics, the boys have their state capital stamp collection books so we visited it again.
Cool building, not a bad place to spend one hour
Touring state capitals is one of my favorite pastimes. The Wisconsin State Capital is gorgeous. Very ornate construction. Lots of imported marble from around the world. The detail on the inside was exquisite. Only capital I’ve been to so far with an observation deck. Entire area is walkable and extremely clean. They love their badgers in Wisconsin. Tour guides are knowledgeable and thorough.
A beautiful building. Want to visit the insides of it.
One of the finest Architectural Building design. Capitol building tour was awesome. After entering the building felt like i am in ancient times. Paintings and sculptures are amazing. One should visit this building, if they are in Madison,WI.
Take the FREE :45 minutes guided tour inside by the East wing. It start every hour on the hour. You will learn a lot more of the history and they will give you access to many of the closed rooms and chambers that you wouldnt be able to see otherwise.
This Capital building seemed to be eclectic. No solid theme. Security was present but, no security screening. The tour guide was knowledgeable but, the tour was short, about 30 minutes.
Wow! Beautiful building. Wandered around for a couple hours, from the basement to the observation deck on top. Very nice air-conditioned get away on a hot day... American craftsmanship at its best. Helpful and nice staff around but you can wander on your own unmolested too. The views from the top of the isthmus, the lakes, the university and city layout are not to be missed. Best free attraction in town! Unless your a tax payer, in that case your paying plenty for admission.
Beautiful historic building! We attended my daughters, Swearing in Ceremony to the State of WI Bar as a new [email protected] impressive honor! We attended the ceremony in the Supreme Court Courtroom. Its open from 8a.m.-6p.m.Open to visitors,no charge.
Its fantastic that this building is open to the public. If you are visiting definitely go up to the dome and look out on Madison. Also its worth just checking out the architecture. Additionally its free.
This is an incredible building. Didnt get too much time there since we got there right before they closed, however, had a lot of fun exploring and finding random open doors to go explore in. The observation deck was closed and we were really looking forward to this, so that was a bummer. Still a fun experience. I got to pretend I was a part of local Government in one of the rooms that was left open!! :)Its a must see for anyone visiting the area and people who live in the area and have never been there.
What a beautiful building. Did not realize it was open to the public and can go on a roof area for views and pics. Cool place.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Wisconsins Capital Building in Madison. Its set between two lakes atop of hill between them offering some great views. Both exterior and interior are beautiful as well as photo worthy.
Very cool place! Worth the time to go
Gorgeous building with lovely grounds right in a nice downtown area with great restaurants.
Beautiful building, inside and out. The grounds are well maintained. Open to the public.
Beautiful capital building, great that its an open government building that you are welcome to enter and explore.Update 11/21/18 - love visiting this state capital, its so beautiful with exceptional craftsmanship and design! Today we got to see a little celebration going on about Scott Walker being voted out of office.
Incredible state capital building, definitely worth a look
It was an awesome experience ! The staff was very kind! Plus we get to take a photo with the policeman! I wish we had those opportunities around here!
Neat architecture. Its great you can still get close to it without all of the crazy security barrier at some other government buildings.
Beautiful Capitol building!! A wonderful place to visit, so much to see you will probably have to come back a few times. Gorgeous stone and wood work. They have a self guided tour you can take and look for hidden secrets, like fossils in the stone of the walls...you can get a pamphlet from the information desk.
Loved visiting here. And outside there was a symphony on the lawn and a lot of vendors around. Very festive!
Great place to visit and enjoy the architecture. Murals on ceilings and walls are breath taking. They also give you a glimpse into the historical events. Guided tours help you learn historical facts, and functioning of the government and activities that happen in different rooms.Entrance is free.Parking on the streets surrounding the building.
Beautiful wood and stone work!! Just love the view!!
Very neat and worth stopping by. Truly beautiful. The outdoor balcony is worth visiting as well.
Inspiring. Living art and history. Challenges us to be our best selves.
Beautiful building - the tallest in Madison and without a doubt its most iconic structure. The daily tours are informative and the history of the capitol building itself and the city are fascinating. Its beautiful when lit at night.
Very fun. We love Wisconsin!! State Capitol is so beautiful. Really great views from the balcony.
Very lovely building with a fascinating history. Free guided tours and you can even do a fossil hunt inside the building. Go all the way up to the observation deck to see both lakes and a great view of Madison.
Incredible architecture. Stunning.
Amazing interior decor!
Walk down State St. and you will find the Capital Building of Wisconsin, its very pretty.
Nice and beautiful
Very impressive architecture! The marbles on the walls were imported from Greece and France and some other places! The intricate designs on the columns and borders showed that they were skilled works!Excellent for school field trip. The guide taught us a lot about what the rooms were used for, who uses them, and how often.Great place to bring history to life when studying about Wisconsin.
Even though it was closed and we didnt go inside...the building was beautiful and the very 1st capitol building on our 50 state tour...it was so clean there
Am unexpectedly beautiful building. I visited on a Saturday in August and there was a bustling, if extremely slowly moving, farmers market outside and an orchestral group playing some beautiful music inside. Im glad I took the time to stop in.
Went on an evening tour of the grounds ...awesome history and wonderful architecture. Our guides were super folks as well.
Such an Amazing Building, be sure to see the fine details that are in the building... The rooftop walk around gives a unique perspective over the city. A must do if you come to Madison
One of a few buildings in Madison of real architectural interest. Lavishly decorated with murals and carvings, plus with an unusual and interesting history. Tours are offered every hour or so and sometimes the state university system holds interesting events in the rotunda. The only real downside is that the people in this building kept trying to get me to pay these strange things called taxes.
The free tour is well worth an hour. The whole family enjoyed it, from kids to grandparents.
Must visit place in Madison. Apart from beautiful architecture you can see preedings of Supreme Court and Assembly house. For me it was one of kind visit to state capital.
We had not been to Madison before, and were awestruck by the sight of the state capitol buildings rotunda as we headed toward our hotel. The building is lit up at night, making the rotunda all the more impressive. It sits in the middle of an X-shape, providing doorways to the north, south, east and west. The surrounding grounds were beautiful, with huge old trees adorning expansive green lawns. Benches and built-in stone seating are everywhere, allowing passers-by to rest and enjoy the views. The building is open seven days a week. One can go in and look around at the interior of the rotunda, the huge sky lights, and over 200-plus types of stone used to create the building. Guided tours are available, although we just wandered. As you go up to ever-higher galleries, hang onto small people. The walls and railings are just tempting enough for little climbers.
Gorgeous architecture and very informative history about the state of Wisconsin. Had a great time photographing the building.
Its a beautiful building to visit. We were there for a marriage and my only suggestion is some sort of organisation for these as there were couples all over doing the same thing a bit all over each other.
I enjoyed my visit to the Capitol Building. I love the architecture, and the rooftop gaze into the city is really cool.
Very cool place! Love coming in on John Nolen Drive and seeing the capitol all lit up! Take the tour of the dome!
Amazing place. They have free tour’s of the whole building. Make sure to take one if you want to know more about the history of the Capitol.
First time at the state capital Madison Wisconsin.I’m from California!
A grand and historical Capitol. There is popular farmers market in summer time.
The building looks stunning. Absolute great sight to see.
Great place to visit with free hourly tours.
This was such a nice place to walk around. The architecture and background history behind everything was really interesting. I wish I could come back again to take everything in when it isnt freezing outside.
This is The Wisconsin State Capital building. Basically it is government office building. Building looking same from all the four sides. It is the excellent example of beautiful architecture. It is located in the Madison downtown. You can have guided tour also to know more about building and its architecture. Must visit places.
Awesome capitol. One of the best i’ve been too lately. Easy parking and nice garden areas. Great for photos and place to come walk around with the family and learn about Madison’s history.
This is a cool stop and most people dont know you can go up and walk around on top of the capital of the building super cool view of Madison from up there.
Very cool and beautiful building. A great way to end your state street walk.
Of all the state capitols Ive seen, this is the most beautifully rendered and maintained. I believe it even puts to shame the U.S. capitol, which is a bit bland and thread-worn by comparison. And at this price ... free ... you really have no excuse for not taking a tour.
Beautiful building, it has green granite (at least I think it’s granite). Funny it’s green considering the Packers! If you’re in Madison during the Holidays check out the trains.
The observation deck is a must do in Madison. Free access to an open air deck around the rotunda.
Had awesome time, people are so welcoming... not a place to miss.... Top view of city is just spectacular.... Make sure to plan a head for car parking...
Mimicking the design of the Nations Capital, this beautiful large structure of marble and granite, houses the governing seat of the state of Wisconsin. There are tours offered daily. Being a public place, entry is free, and bathrooms are available. There are entrances for wheelchairs on the sides facing East and West Washington Avenues (located UNDER the stairs on each side.) The entire building was retrofitted with some modern amenities, such as central air. The rotunda houses a massive mural that stretches all across the circular dome.
One of the most spectacular buildings in the entire country. This Capital dome is second in size only to the US Capital. A must see.
The tour was amazing and the tour guide( Adam ) is outstanding . Definitely recommend it .
Amazing architecture I can never get enough! Always kept up. Only bad thing is it closes at 6
Its a nice place for take short break in your busy life.
I never get tired to go for a walk around the Capitol, is always nice, quiet, clean ....and they put a awesome Christmas tree in December. It is also the center of great events of the city like the Taste of Madison.
Nice place to hang out.makes more special with the lake s nearby
Great place to check out if youre into architecture. Take the time and head to the observation area to see amazing views of Madison.
This is the most beautiful capital building I’ve ever seen.
A very knowledgeable tour guide who seemed to enjoy her job immensely. Very organized and handled a large group efficiently. The building is amazing and without the tour, we would have never understood so much of the history or what we were looking at. This one is worth seeing.
Nice place to tour. And plenty of places to eat.
This is a review based only on the building itself—I love the capital, it is stunning! The marble, wood, and gold leaf Work is amazing. Every time I go I discover a new detail! The observation deck is a great place to not only see the whole of downtown, but to also pinpoint what street you need to go down to get somewhere. I personally like the fact that no buildings can be taller than the capital, it creates a less cluttered city to live in, and offers an uninterrupted view of the capital from anywhere along the lake.
A gorgeous location filled with like-minded souls yearning for the perfect Instagram photo
Nice people, good restaurants, pretty laid back.
The Wisconsin State Capitol is one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in the USA. Its beautiful architecture is absolutely captivating. The best way is to join in the frequent guided tours that happens every day and get to the know the various features and the history of the place. Its a building that forms an inevitable part of this nice little citys history and culture.Around the building are sprawling parks where one can sit and relax. In the afternoons, the place is filled with great food trucks. There are free concerts during afternoons which you can enjoy over lunch. Its a place worth spending your time and the majestic settings is a great photo op.
Busy streets and construction. But the sights were nice to see.
The most beautiful state capitol building Ive seen. Gorgeously ornate construction and design. Best of all, its free to explore. Make sure to find your way up to the roof for the best view of the city!
Lots to see in here, beautiful marble everywhere, ingenious architect made use of natural light in rooms and glass blocks in the floor to let even more light in, gorgeous paintings depicting historical events and interesting symbolism (take the tour to get it all explained to you). Our guide was informative and funny, even though her guide voice was about 3 octaves higher than her normal conversational voice. She pointed out many of the Badgers, and taught me things about my own State I never knew, like why we are called The Badger State. Ive been to Washington DC and toured our Federal Capitol and this was definitely more impressive and beautiful. Plus we were treated to a St. Patricks Day concert by bagpipers and Irish dancers inside the building that then turned into a parade right outside. Id give this a 5 star rating if I didnt dislike our Governor so much. :)
Very impressive architecture, worth taking a walk through when in town.
I havent been there yet but I would like to know if youre allowed to take pictures of the inside of the Capital Building?
The capitol is a very pretty building. Its definitely on my short list of touristy places to see in Madison. Its gorgeous for taking pictures outside and inside and on the balcony.
I love that it has tour guides and also that they let you take photos of almost anything you learn lots of history and the architecture is amazing... Rub the badgers nose if you can.
