Great little place packed with lots of unique and important pieces of our military past. Goes over many different wars and direct effects on Wisconsin. Even if you are not from Wisconsin, very interesting place. Free to get in, small in size. fully accessible for individuals of all capacities. We went as a large school group and they even provided info pages and scavenger hunt type fill ins to keep the kids involved and digging deeper. Nice little gift shop had war related items to all branches of the military and all price points.
Took my son here on a field trip and it was a fun place. They have a nice selection of historical artifacts and weaponry. The prices were pretty fair too. Definitely a must-visit.
Nice setup with realistic dioramas. Covers Wisconsin military history from Civil War to Modern. Has real aircraft and field gun on display. Awesome actual submarine periscope to see outside
Had been meaning to visit for years a small, but well put together collection, focusing on Wisconsin, and its military contributions to our country. Great gift shop as well, I highly recommend. Also the Wisconsin State Historical Museum is across the street.
Free. Very organized. Took a guided tour with my daughters 5th grade class. Very informative! The displays are Great! Life like! No parking, find a ramp just off Carroll Street.
I love history the museum was great to look at. It was free hard to find these days. I enjoyed reading about our veterans and the wars that were fought I enjoyed this ace will be back
They have done ALOT with a small space. We went for drink n draw: so cool! Plus drinks! The museum is a 4, but the event made it a 5!
I took my younger kids when we were downtown. Their dad is a Veteran so they were able to get a better understanding of what it meant to be in a war. I love how admission is free! The staff was welcoming and kind.
A very neat free museum to check out sometime. Well worth a stop to check it out in person.Shows the State of Wisconsin involvements in US Armed Conflicts and Wars. Starting with The US Civil War through The War On Terror. You can also ask for a handheld audio guide that gives extra audio excerpts. There are models, firearms, videos, displays, and other war memorabilia to look at. From all the eras featured.Great stories to read about the soldiers from Wisconsin and the battles they took part in. It will take you a few hours to see everything if take your time. But you can also breeze through and still enjoy it. Completely free but they accept donations and have a neat gift shop as well.
It was very teaching, and interesting, and their models were so real life like
Didnt have time to see enough of it to fairly tell but the initial greeting was Less than cordial and Im a Vet!
One of my favorite museums in the Midwest. Its filled with cool information and lots of things to see and touch. Best of all its free and right in the capitol square. A must see. Dont miss this important historical monument to those who sacrificed.
Went with a school field trip. Kids were very entertained. The exhibits were awesome and it was definitely worth the trip from Milwaukee.
Its a point of attraction for those who really care about the history. This is a unique Defence museum of the US DoD. The museum have incorporated the facts and figures of the Civil War and the role played by the Wisconsin Armed division. It has nicely placed models and statues of the war cites from that era. The museum also have a good collection of artifacts, role of the US army, airforce and navy with Video displays for WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, Korean War, Gulf War and cold war. Must visit for histirians and students anyday.
For a small display it was very nice museum. And it was free admission.
Very interesting and detailed exhibits.
Well presented and portrayed! Thanks to all who made this such a great diorama of Wisconsin military history.
Awesome, free self guided museum. Lots of neat, lesser known facts about Wisconsins involvement in wars.
Wonderful history, dont need all day.
This little hidden gem is one of the most well designed, created, and history-teaching veteran museums I have ever seen. #88m Army
Very organized, nice staffThere is a lot to learn in there and wonderful gifts too .
Great museum the amount of information and stories they have gives everyone a little better understanding of our veterans. They have many artifacts and stories from every major conflict I would recommend this museum for a family or anyone spending time in the Madison area.
Great place to go to see history of our country. And its free
Very nice place, lots of knowledge-FREE-but you need to donate.Great gift shop-good prices for a museum especially
Nice free museum with a lot of military history including recognition of recent hero’s
Free and a lot of fun. Great exhibits. Love coming here.
I have lived here since 1997 and had never been here. As a military veteran, I am very pleasantly surprised to find such an awesome collection of items and display of so much information pertaining to so many wars. Definitely an impressive set-up despite being limited on space. Admission is free, but donations are welcomed. Tour is self-guided and goes in a clock-wise manner around the room. Museum is on the square so youll have to park in a nearby ramp. Pickney street or the Carroll street ramps are probably your closest options.
A beautiful history of WI veterans stories throughout American wars
What a hidden gem of a museum! I had no idea this little spot even existed until we spotted it while at the Taste of Madison. The museum itself is small (2-3 large sized rooms), and admission is free, making this an awesome spot to kill an hour if youre in the capital area.
Only donation. Otherwise free. Smaller than other free museums, but so much packed into those few rooms that we spent quite a bit of time and teens really enjoyed it.
I loved this place! My grandfather was a veteran and I got a chance to see the mesume through his eyes. I loved my grandfather dearly and this just made me even closer to him. Just because he has passed this is a great place to feel like I shared his days of the military with him. I urge you to go and support this place! Thank you to all who support and work here!
Interesting museum with history and artifacts from the Civil War up through WWII. There was also a very interesting temporary exhibit with sketches and artwork from a veteran stationed in the South Pacific in WWII. Very interesting and cool to walk through.
Called in here while waiting for a bus back in 2007, great set-up very friendly guides and lots of information. Also a section on Australian and Wisconsin troops fighting together in The New Guinea campaign. Made me very proud of both our countries.
Great museum. Great for kids and adults alike. Stop in if your in the area, you wont be disappointed.
Very lovely museum. Worth the visit.
Exceptionally progressive for a veterans museum, good special lecture series and other programming
Very nice museum very well done just wish it wasnt in a building with such high real estate value I dont believe this is the best use of the taxpayers money. I also believe they should be charging amission
This is a really awesome museum! A must see if you ever go to Madison. Its a little small, but its a really neat place!
This stop offered a very interesting, educational experience for my family. You can choose to focus on a specific war or travel through history and see the evolution of guns, equipment, and even planes are on exhibit. Well worth the visit with multiple generations.
One is the best free museums Ive ever been too. Its larger than you think just entering. It covers a lot of information and different wars as well. If you go in chronological order, its cool too see how far they went in making this a good experience. Well worth the stop if you have 30 minutes to a couple hours.
This place was amazing! Just great what they have done in the little space they had. It was a great place to spend a few hours if you have the time. Its free but please throw a few buck in the bin to keep places like this alive.
A great place with very nice displays and very informative signage. Employees are knowledgeable and helpful.
Nice displays of artifacts in fairly small museum. I enjoyed the temporary WWI propoganda display.
Well cared for museum with some interactive features. Staff seems passionate about their work.
Always a great place to visit. I take everyone who visits Madison to this museum. Well done, clean, and just a great museum.
Such a great little museum. Definitely a must see if you are visiting the downtown area.
Great exhibits, wonderful experience, very well put together and detailed exhibits.
Very nice little museum and the lady named Ellen at the front desk was very nice and helpful
This museum was great. I wish we had taken a guided tour as one was finishing up. In the last 5 minutes we learned an interesting thing about the cannon where you first start. This is a good place to take kids to learn more about the sacrifices made by those who came before us. I do have a suggestion. I am a Gold Star Mom. My son was a Ranger killed in Operation Just Cause. He was the only one from Wisconsin. It would be nice to mention the ones killed in those conflicts. My other son was Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield, it was good to see you have a part dedicated to the War on Terror. This museum is a must see.
Very informative, great place to take older kids to gain some knowledge on Wisconsins history.
It was very educational and informative. It’s great to see the sacrifices paid on our behalf.
You provide to my husband who is a vet. We are thankful for the doctors, nurses, and the staff for making. ALL of his needs met.
Free museum honoring and recognizing Wisconsins veterans. Great artifacts on display from weapons to uniforms. Some outstanding full sized dioramas depicting various eras in Wisconsins military past. The gift shop has some nice items that would be difficult to find elsewhere, as well as a vast collection of books for sale. An hour or two would be well spent.Id love to see the museum relocate to a larger location to display more of what must be a vast collection.
Great museum! Lots of information and many displays for the area available. We had a very good visit today with our boy scout troop.
A great place to visit when in Madison. Make sure to check out the Iron Brigade coming through the Antietam corn field.
Very interesting and informative. Worth the trip. I may be bias being a Veteran myself.
This was amazing. We found a connection with our family from WWII.
Grandkids loved it n learned alot
This place is so awesome! They have incredibly detailed displays of every war in American history. If you are into history and youre in Madison you have to stop here, and to make it even better its free!
If you are downtown you have to stop in. Its free and I learn something every time I go.
The Wisconsin Veterans Museum is small, but it is well laid out and informative, and not to mention, the exhibits are of top quality. With displays that are heavily on the Civil War to the Gulf War, the museum shows Wisconsin’s roles in the U.S. military.A slow walking tour with stops to read the descriptions of the displays takes about an hour or so. If you have kids, it may take more time.
Very nice, free museum. Nice collection!!
They have lots of old war memorabilia that is really cool to look at.
Very well presented displays.
A cool place to see old equipment. Theres a lot of cool equipment and firearms to see here, but you wont learn a ton unless you specifically try to take youve seen and find out more on your own. Limited information for the amount of material items. This is a better stop for a historian than a civilian
It was great to be able to see all the different wars and the information on so many different items a from each war. My kids loved the pariscope
Fascinating museum with elaborate full size diaramas of all the American wars / periods rich with many authentic artifacts. A wonderful educational experience, most heartily recommended !
Well put together museum and FREE
Great night at the draw and drink. Looking forward to doing it again
Wonderful! I loved this place, great attention to detail and a visual learning experience.
This is a must see if you are in the area, the whole staff are soooo knowledgeable of all in this museum and very friendly. The items on display are second to none. Saw 4 medal of Honor receipts in one place heart breaking stories of real American Heros! Go see this place if you get the chance, wont be disappointed.
Free museum. We take our son here once a year.
Outstanding collection, displays and educational stations.
Informative chronological format with elaborate, detailed dioramas and multmedia presentations.
Nice experience, very informative, would include with capital tour. Watch out on parking they have really increased prices around the square there
Free Museum. Even a periscope from a submarine!
I think everyone should vist this place
Lots of cool things to look at and a lot of great history to learn.
Very cool!! Not some old stuffy museum.. pleasantly surprised. Cool old relics
Many cool artifacts and tons of history
Very informative. Takes you on a well organized trip through time and offers the players in each event the respect they deserve.
My kids like this museum. They really put a lot into the exhibits and some interesting tidbits on WIs role in different wars. Theres even some military vehicles. Especially great because its free (accepting donations of course).
It is a great place for Wisconsin Veterans to visit.
Great place and its free!!
Interesting place.
Enjoyed meandering through the museum today. A knowledgeable staff and many interesting artifacts. Also, a gift shop out front. On top of that, its free!
Great historical display that brings history back to life.
Dont let the seemingly small size deter you. There is a lot of history packed into this museum. From the civil war to desert storm theyve got stories and artifacts. Also its free with donations accepted so a great cheap date or family experience.
One of the best museums anywhere.
Good scenes from different wars, the ultimate sacrifice.
Great museum. My kids enjoyed the exhibits. Best part its free.
Great free museum to visit. Wonderful displays which portray a chronological order of the wars and people of Wisconsin people who fought in them for our freedom.
Excellent, thank you so much! My sons loved it!
Very informational and very detail
Very informative and affordable family friendly fun!
