Very well put together and organized.. I am looking forward to more events ...It wasnt scarey but it was a great family time
It was awesome! Actors very talented and creative. Highly recommend!
Being out under the stars for the first time since SIP began in March was truly a wonderful thing. A few hiccups at the pop-up drive-in showing on Saturday, 7/18 (a seemingly uncooperative A/V system, resulting in a delayed start, and a smaller screen, which wouldve made seeing the film a little challenging) account for the sub-5 star rating. Kudos to all event staff, who were universally welcoming, courteous and helpful.
This is a unique space with an interesting history. Fun Saturday farmers market-type set up with indoor galleries and art spaces.
The drive thru haunted house was great, everyone enjoyed it.
The Tour de Mount Vernon started here, and also finished here. Great location.
Went to see the nightmare alley drive through, unique, interesting experience....
Attended drive in movie. This was a lot of fun and very well organized. Would definitely do again, great family activity!
Fun place to explore with local art and history.
Horrible place for a venue for a wedding. The customer service is terrible, they dont respond to you after they get your money. The air conditioner does not work, it was 89 degrees for my wedding reception, they didnt check id for folks under 21 and just gave alcohol to anyone. They told us we didnt have to wear masks then after the reception I complained about the air they said we didnt follow their rules and wear masks when Erin was present and told my vendors that they didnt have to wear masks either. They lied and said my vendors left a mess when they checked out before leaving with Erin and she said everything was good. Their employees are not on the same page, horrible communication, horrible customer service and deceitful when confronted. DO NOT USE THIS VENUE FOR ANYTHING!They do not accept responsibility for their rundown building
Drive thru haunted trail was excellent fun!
Went to see the drive in movie. Sound and picture cut out a couple of times. Plus the sound had a lot of static. It was ok
I havent gon but Im planning to how much did most people pay to get tinto the drive in haunted trail thingy?per person?or
A complete gem of a community arts center! They have the Second Saturday art walks every (you got it!) second Saturday of the month. You can see tons of great local artist and visit their studios. They have a lot of art/jewellery/crafts for sale at very reasonable prices! They also put out snacks and have beer and wine for sale. There are lots of local volunteers there who are more than willing to share their knowledge of the prison and its very interesting history. Such a fun way to spend an evening!
Movie night was great. Thank you for such a fun experience.
Such a gem. Signed up for Bread 101 with Chef Kathleen Linton. I rarely go for reviews but it was such a thrilling class to learn so much from an expert. I got lucky because I am an extreme beginner and was surrounded by a class of enthusiasts. Paired up with very accomdating group and took away valuable lessons (albiet forgot the immense amount of lessons..) through the two day course.. in addition to loaves of bread one cannot devour alone. It wasnt until coming home after the blur of the classes and eating even more did I realize how good of a deal it was.Looking forward to returning for classes with kids and friends. Highly recommend!
Great places for a small outing! Great vendors as well
Really cool place with a rich history. You should go check it out.
Amazing Art! The artists are unique, creative, and top notch. Beyond the creative studios and phenomenal works for sale is the ongoing community connectivity to celebrate visual art. The prison break haunted house is immersive and terrifying. The summer camps and workshops are enriching and staffed by patient artists. Our family traditionally rings in the Christmas season with carolling and bonfire.
Great community market
This place is so eclectic and is a wonderful resource for artists in the Northern Virginia area! Everyone should stop by and check it out! They have classes, events, and galleries showings!
Glass class was great
This is a great little John right off the highway in lorton for all ages they teach art classes dance classes glass blowing pottery and their individual studios with artist that work in house and sell out of the studio and then there are co-op galleries were artist outside of the facility bring their art to be shown here. And every second Saturday is super busy with free food drinks and the ability for locals to meet the artist that work and live in the area.
Check hours open.
Great fireworks show for family. You can park on Ox Road, either side. You may also park at the Shoppes of Lorton shipping center; it is exactly 1 mile away, and an easy walk to Workhouse Rd. The lawn at Workhouse Rd and Ox Rd provides for a great view, with fireworks exploding over the arts center.$20 parking if you want to park at the Arts center.Ice cream trucks and various food truck venders will be spread around. You can bring your own lawn chairs, food, and ice buckets.Show started at 9:30pm and was for ~ 1/2 hour. Show is slow for most if the time, which is why I have the 4 star rating, but like all other displays, and had a monster ending.
A good place to visit.
I enjoy every visit and talking to everyone I meet.
I went to a comedy show here at the W16 building. Its in an art building and they dont serve food. They do have alcohol and sodas to drink and candy bars if youre hungry. The comedy was OK if you really want to get out but I dont think I will go back. I couldnt wait for the show to be over because the seats were uncomfortable. A fair price for the show would be $10.
The workhouse is probably the most dishonest organization in the Lorton area. They reserved a party room for my friends 50th birthday party several months in advance and took her deposit. Then after confirming the details and receipt of the deposit, they called her and made her switch rooms. She agreed to accommodate a smaller room so that she could continue to have her party at this location. A few days before her event was about to start, they called her and said she no longer had a room because they couldn’t accommodate two parties at once. Instead they said that they would provide compensation for her to switch her venue to a different place. She was extremely upset that she had to switch all of her party plans at the last minute but was able to find a new place. The event was held this past weekend. Then they wrote her and told her that the check was ready for her to pick up. When she went to pick up the check the CEO told her that they were no longer going to give her the check because the board decided that it was not necessary, even though she had written evidence dating all the way back to August (it’s now October) showing repeated promises that they were going to honor their side of the deal. Do NOT ever book any sort of party, room, anything at the work house. THEY WILL SCREW YOU OVER.
In Lorton? really? What an amazing place. In fact they offer so many things it is kind of hard to describe and categorize:Visual arts- yep a wide range of active artist studios and a lovely art exhibit space.Performing arts- check. A terrific small, ~100 seat, theatre delivering high quality shows. Dance classes, and a monthly social dance,.Art of movement- yoga,Pilates, tai chi and more.Recovery forgeHost of summer Fairfax county MountVernon nights concertsPlus, 4th of July fireworks, haunted trail, and brew fest special events.Want access to a wide and varied selection of arts? Rather not have to drive far? Here it is at the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center.
Beautiful
One may draw a strong likeness between the Workhouse Arts Center and the Torpedo Factory, as both art centers have been reappropriated from different uses to now offer residencies, galleries, workshops, and events. The artists at the Workhouse Arts Center are kind, passionate, and talented individuals. The space recognizes its cultural heritage and the artists I have met have been open to talking about its past. The classes offered here are high quality, yet the institute may not be highly advertised because their marketing opportunities are restricted by government funding. I would highly recommend visiting if you enjoy art and museums or if youre interested in talking with artists-in-residence or even taking a class!
Unique place and worth going. A former prison/workhouse reclaimed by Fairfax County and turned into working studios for artists in several buildings with a main gallery and also gallery spaces in individual buildings with reasonably priced fine arts and crafts for sale. Also a small museum with a history of the prison; suffragettes were imprisoned here. Been several times and brought guests from out of town. Art lovers will enjoy!
Neat spot used for art space. Host an annual Prision Break Run with a fantastic announcer. Like the events they have there. Check out the museum if youre in the area.
I work here at the Workhouse for Charming Concepts in building 9. This is a great place for the collaboration and expression of many creative minds. Plus there are Pokestops.
What a horrible experience! Our group did a date night cooking class in July. Well lets just say a salad making class. Ugh! What a waste of $150.00. We would have been better off going out to dinner. The group was over booked so the little bit of precooked meat for the joke of salad on paper plates and plastic forks. Will never go back !!!
Torpedo factory but without the crowd and bigger.
The Workhouse Arts Center offers a vibrant cultural artisan center with 125 of the region’s best artists in one place. We LOVE the performing arts and entertainment at the Workhouse; the Cabaret Series, Dinner and a Movie Series, Cool Cow Comedy, and spectacular musical performances!
Very nice to see an infamous historic place, now closed down, turned into an arts center and a place for community events such as the Fourth of July fire works display. Art classes, to include pottery, stained glass are offered as well as cooking classes. There is a very small but informative museum about the Work House history - it includes the early 1900s Womens Suffrage Movement through the lens of incarceration at this site. There is a smal memorial plaque of Correction Officers killed while in the line of duty when the Work House served as a prison. The open grassy area of the Work House is used for the Fourth of July fireworks display and other outdoor events, take notice that it can get very crowded due to the small size of the field. There still is much to do to improve the place and look forward to see what more will be done to the complex. Nearby the Work House is an old, closed down, razed Nike Missile site built to defend Washington, DC from Soviet bombers during the Cold War.
The people at the center were extremely friendly, welcoming and passionate about their artwork, the range of classes they offer is amazing and the environment couldn’t be better. Really glad I passed by.
One of my absolute favorite places. Very supportive and creative collaboration of artists and teachers. If i could live here, i would.
The Lorton Correctional Facility was opened in 1910 to be a new and modern way to handle inmates. It had no walls or fences. Think of it as a place to re-educate, like a college, those people who had lost their way. In the end it turned out to be more of a workhouse. It is mostly known for the 168 members of the National Womens Party who were sent there in 1917. Many were force-fed after starting a hunger-strike and on the Night of November 17th many were tortured, abused, and beaten. In other words it kind of failed. It was closed in 2001 and in 2004 became a Cultural Arts Center (now known as the Workhouse Arts Center) and historical landmark. It also had a few sports fields (because of all the open ground). There are even some guard towers there. When you visit it comes across as a history museum, art center, artist colony, and, yes, there was a gift shop when I visited. There is parking and the art galleries are free, as is the museum. The hours are all over the place and there are tours for groups of ten and up, so I would check their website before any visits. When we were there is was so empty we thought parts of it were closed but also remember they have events, classes, performances, and night concerts so be warned.
I been there every year! Its amazing love it cant wait to see it this year 2017
They offer amazing, low cost classes, and show brilliant artwork! What more could you want?
Very interesting selection of talented artist creations. A must see if in the area.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!! I purchased my tickets DAYS before the scheduled date and I was still unable to go in because they oversold the night. NOT MY PROBLEM. If I already purchased a ticket for an event, regardless if YOU oversold YOUR event, I should still get the service YOU promoted for SATURDAY. WASTE OF YOUR TIME & MONEY! THESE PEOPLE ARE TRUE SCAMMERS! BEWARE!Regards,A HIGHLY UNSATISFIFIED CUSTOMER.
The different Studios are great. Ive taken classes that are great there. Excellent instructors and friendly staff.
Still up and coming, but I love the reuse of the old prison houses!
Very nice placeWe where three women a b d orderd 3 kind saladsIt was fresh and tastyFor desert we got a hoge piece of peckan and coconut cake that was very tasty but couldnt finish it so we took its leftovers home
Great art studios. I particularly like the glass studio.
We have visited the Workhouse Arts Center for two shows, they have been very professional and entertaining and we plan to keep on attending other events.
Great venue, interesting history, nice art, & Occoquan nearby!
The brewfest event is worth the price.
Great place for the Ganesha Festival Celebration!
Its just humid... music and beer is awesome!
Went for brewfest. It was set up ok but the food was spread out and we had to look for it.
Love this place. come see it for yourself.
A must visit whenever we are in the area. Interesting.
Great fireworks show for the 4th of July
Pretty cool art here.
Friendly artists at work and lots to see.
Had a wonderful time.
Its ok
Extremely unresponsive administration. If youre looking to create art here, do not expect the director to keep her word about getting back to you - or to acknowledge you if youre not a medium that suits their fancy.
Awesome!!! a destination for the arts!
Nice place!!
Fantastic spring fest.
