Day or night (preferably night) this is a must-see for all ages. Come alone or come with a friend. Truly an experience to be had. Bring some food and your favorite drink then just sit and watch the passerbys dance below the lights. A little creepy but definitely fun.
Thought that Rancho Los Alamitos was a great area to visit. It’s completely free (though they take donation), you are freely allowed to see the animals on site, and you get to see the amazing landscaping of the area. The only part not shown is the private tour of the ranch house, which you cannot take photos of. It’s a great place to go relax, be mindful, and enjoy the day at.
My husband and I come here often with our toddler. Its gorgeous and the staff isnt snoody. The tour is a must! So many antiques and amazing vintage pieces. Their gardens are incredible!
First time here its not too big but its also not too small its just right if you want to take a nice little walk through some pretty flowers I would definitely come back here especially because they have animals here they have bunnies horses and sheep. The place is very clean and organized and their gift shop there is also very nice you can also request for a tour if youd like but you have to let them know when you check into the front which I would think would be a pretty good idea cuz you get more information.
My favorite place!! The docents are exceptional, the gardens verdant and very well taken care and my favorite part is going to their barn and spending time with the ranch animals. My children love going there and you cannot beat the price because its free! If you go make sure to take a tour of the adobe house and go see the garden that the Olmsted brothers designed and remember they only open after 1 pm.
Love this hidden gem. Ive been coming for 30 yrs. Every season it has new areas in the garden to admire! Peaceful and I love bringing my camera along. Wonderful gift shop. So fun to see chickens running free and all the other animals. The historic architecture is beautiful!
In the Spring you have to visit this place for the wisteria scent is in the air. The docent tours are a must. But the gardens win accolades. Go for it and visit anytime of the year and the farm animals will be an extra treat. A chicken strolled up to me looking for a treat.
The parking and entrance are free. There is a film about the ranch, then you can visit the ranch which had goats, sheep, ducks, rabbits etc. They said sometimes they also have horses as well. There are also beautiful gardens with unique plants, and a free guided tour of the beautiful Bixby house/former adobe which took a little over an hour. Very interesting and the woman at the reception was very nice and welcoming. A great free attraction if you are in the area.
This was a lovely day. Full of local history and the Adobe was like a time capsule. The gardens were so beautiful! The people that run the museum tour were so knowledgeable and very kind. Enjoyed it tremendously and will surely go back again.
Great historical place with a beautiful home/ranch. Free too - don’t mind the kid security guard. I would live here .
I’m glad it was open. There is a couple spots that are restricted temporarily due to covid, but you still spend about 1 hour here.
Beautiful place to visit for free. Volunteers are very knowledgeable; they take you on a very intimate tour of the main house. Afterward you can explore the gardens on your own.
Good. Not bad. They have good horses and Black Smith there. They had a wonderful gift shop. Oh boy, in Gift Shop, they had sugar free BBQ sauce.
Cant believe this place is free! Perfect little respite from the urban hustle and such a great place to bring kids. There is a large lawn area to run around and picnic. There are goats, sheep, ducks, rabbits, and chickens. There is a beautiful garden that feels like a trip back in time. Love it!
Seven acres of well tended gardens and grounds, historic adobe ranch house that has survived well up to its current remodel, barns and animals, guided tours or just a nice walk in nature. Good for singles and families of multi generations to go and be together for a few hours. Just drive through the GateHouse at Bixby Hill, go to the top of the hill and enjoy. And, its free.
Beautiful, peaceful place in Long Beach Area.
Rancho Los Alamitos is beautiful and historic, a real gem! I learned about the Rancho from a Facebook friends post a little over a year ago - Ive lived in Seal Beach for nearly 35 years and didnt know it existed! I go there often to walk the gardens, take photos, just sit and relax. Sometimes I visit the animals too! I became a member, and attended the wonderful Farm Dinner in August of last year. This wonderful place needs to be preserved for all time!
Beautiful grounds. Love the water features!
Vary nice place to visit and Enjoy the History of Fred Bixby
This place I ran up on it by accident. You walk into the past once you get to this location its beautiful its peaceful an extremely well-preserved. And you get a few tidbits to the community. Yes its free they do take donations. It just shows you how far weve come. Id appreciate what it took to get here.
A hidden gem in Long Beach. Nice place for a walk. Friendly staff.
Beautiful gardens. Quiet with so much history!
Great place for an afternoon stroll. Beautiful grounds and a nice cozy atmosphere. I didnt take the tour because it would be hard with a stroller, but the grounds were fun and the plants and animals were fun for the kids.
Fun place to visit and teaches you a bit about history for this area. Completely free and very beautiful. Take the tour to learn more details about the grounds and its also free!
Beautiful place to spend a couple of hours. Lots of gardens and variety of animals for kids to see. Love the furry chickens running around freely.
Rancho Los Alamitos is located within the gated community of Bixby Hill and is accessed through the residential security gate at Anaheim Rd and Palo Verde Ave. Open 1-5 Wed-Sun, closed holidays and for special events.Rancho Los Alamitos, the “Ranch of the Cottonwoods,” is a Long Beach City Landmark, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum features the history of the Tongva native American people, and the rancho era. The 7½-acre site includes four acres of historic gardens, a ranch house, a museum, and a restored barnyard — all were recently refurbished.
I come to the Rancho often to do watercolor painting on the grounds. The place is beautiful and well-maintained.
One of the most beautiful places in Long beach. Great succulent garden, and rose garden
Awesome place! Nuff said!
Quiet and enviornment. Self tours are best of you plan on taking your time
Beautiful grounds and interesting history.
Wonderful! I love this place!
We love it and really enjoyed, small but good place to visit
Very lucky, it takes 20 years to open.
I had pleasant time there. Its so beautiful. I specially enjoy the cactus garden.
Cool chickens wandering around, and other farm animals and equipment to see. Went with my 6 month old and he enjoyed the animals trees and sitting in the grass.
Great California history, beautiful grounds. Gardens are welcoming and cool.
Great place to spend the day. The tour is worth the wait, and the staff is very friendly. I was surprised something like this existed right in the middle of Long Beach. They have something for everyone. If you like history, you’ll be thrilled. If you like walking through beautiful gardens, they have several for you to spend the day walking through. They usually have horses although they weren’t there on the days I toured unfortunately. He house itself is quite interesting and beautiful, however you have to go in a tour with a group. No matter what you like I think you will have a great day if you tour this ranch. ️Only one caution ️ They have a volunteer named Barbara who is not mentally stable in my opinion. If by chance you come across her ask for someone else or just avoid direct contact !!!️ They should consider turning her away as a volunteer before she hurts someone, or creates a huge problem for them . ️
3 stars because the walk through the Ranch and gardens was pleasant. What was not pleasant is the yucky feeling you get with the docents and some staff towards the children. My 8yr old even commented as we were leaving.. It was a nice homeschool field trip but highly doubt we will be back. Blacksmith was super awesome with children interaction and explaining his job
Great place to visit if you are interested in local history. Original adobe brick home & ranch. Knowledgeable staff made it all the more interesting (great insider stories). Worth every minute of exploration.
Such a rich history. I had no idea this place even existed. It is a must visit! And the price is right, FREE!
Great place, but couldnt take pictures of the house inside or out, historical house and no post cards pictures, either
Where can you find original barns built in the 1930s bamboo trees, horses, and chickens roaming around in Long Beach? Here at El Rancho Los Alamitos. Nested within a residential area adjacent to California State Long Beach. Admission and parking is free, but tours need to be booked in order to attend. Its a great place to bring the little ones and introduce them to live animals in a more intimate setting or set up a tour and luncheon with your friends. Roam around the multiple gardens and learn some history about early CaliforniaIts open to the public and multiple structures have been restored. Highly recommend Rancho Los Alamitos!
This place is a real treat! History, a fascinating house and barns, several interesting gardens and a nice museum combine to make for a fun visit. Recommended!
Charming historical homeplace...allow yourself time to watch the movie, tour the groups and especially the house...giftshop has a nice selection as well...we are so glad we went..the docents are wonderful !!
This place looks beautiful; too bad the horrible Docents will ruin it for you making it IMPOSSIBLE to enjoy. The Docents here are used to historic objects and not real humans! Came here at 1 pm on a Sunday, there was maybe 2 or 3 other parties walking around.I wanted to take pictures but was told I needed to pay $25 to use a camera but phone cameras were free. Before I paid, I wanted to look around - the lady literally followed me around constantly pestering me about what I was doing here and why I was here. Its a historical landmark open to the PUBLIC, not Louis Vuttion, why was she following me around like I was about to shoplift. As we turned the corner, a very obviously vision impaired man with a service dog stepped onto the property... she ran towards him immediately to accost him and his dog. Seriously lady!? He cant see, that is clearly a service dog with a service vest! AVOID this place.
I enjoy this nice neighborhood ranch. Friendly farm animals and enjoyable walking paths through numerous gardens.
Take the docent tour. Its a must. Graduation made it a bit crowded, but usually you have a quiet place to meander through beautiful plantings.
Very interesting history and gardens, plus excellent docents.
It was a great experience we spent with the tour guide perso, very nice place to learn
Floral scented Wisteria are in bloom. Spring is in the air. Wonderful time to visit.
You walk around beautiful grounds. Amazing
Great casual place to walk around and explore a 200 year old adobe house and its amazing gardens. my favorite is the cactus gardens. my kids love seeing the farm animals especially the chickens that run free!
The Rancho was dressed for Christmas and it did not disappoint. They had a special tour of the house. A docent was in each room to answer any questions and talk a little of how the Bixby family used the room, bringing the room to life. The Rancho was beautifully decorated for Christmas, but it is lovely to see any time of year. You can also tour the outside buildings. There is an interesting short film about the rancho and a wonderful display for life on the rancho. There are farm animals here, as well. There is a gift shop with a thoughtful inventory and a little something for every budget. For the Christmas celebration, the open house was complete with refreshments. A delightful evening.
Great escape from the rest of LA!
Learned so much about local history. Attended a home tour and visited the gardens
Great place to visit and have a nice walk. I love the gardens and fountains
Peaceful!! I spend about an hour there with my 3 kiddos and nephews. Great place for a small walk to relax, fresh air, beautiful scenery. There are chairs to sit around and relax. Definitely worth seeing.
Loved the tour! The grounds are stunning. I mean absolutely beautiful. The tour is very informative. I will definitely be going back.
I havent been there personally, but the outside looks really nice. The locality, which is by the university, is excellent. You have to check in at the guard station as it is a gated community.
It is a nice place with interesting history.
Seal Beach 65 degrees ️️️
5 stars for the staff, nice place. 3 stars for not allowing pictures in the “historic” barn, which was only accessible in a guided tour. You can find a video tour online.
O my God so beautiful. Cant wait to go back. Just beautiful. A must see
Lots of photo opportunities, and the staff were always nice and friendly.
My favorite place to bring my kid. Everything is free and the place is stunning.
Most locals have no idea this place exists. Its free entrance but they accept donations. Beautiful setting, great place to take younger kids. Pleasant walk for adults.
Great historical site. Dont miss!
Very pleasant and refreshing. tour was superb. Great view! Hauntingly beautiful...
Amazing place for a solo walk or family walk.. Theres different farm animals ans alot of cool places and plants ... A great place to learn some history and great for pics
I will definitely come back!! Great history
Beautiful place to get away.
Love to take grands here to run off energy.
Rancho Los Alamitos is free. The original rancho home is still there and well preserved. I recommend the free guided tour. The history of the rancho explains a lot of the demographics of the greater surrounding cities and area. The City of Long Beach now owns the property.
Beautiful place to go. Love the walk free to take a fieldtrip with your kids
Beautiful gardens. Rich history of SoCal.
We loved it here. Its free
I love the Rancho! It is a great place to visit. I love its history and the beautiful grounds.
They are currently doing construction on the house, so the horses that are usually there are gone, but the gardens are beautiful, so still worth visiting.
Rancho Los Alamitos is beautiful historic place, good place to know about past in Long Beach.C.A
Went for a docent led tour. The family that used to live there seemed lovely, had integrity, and treated their workers properly. What was left was an incredible garden in the back to tour thru. It was the highlight of the tour. This is a must visit and tour place if you are in the area! You have to check in thru the neighborhood security gate. Tell them you are attending the tour. It may take some time to get thru as there is a large line of cars Saturday morning.
Beautiful place, lots of history. Very friendly and knowledgeable employees. Definitely will visit again.
Docents were friendly and knowledgeable. Lovely tour and very well keep facilities.
Beautiful place. Historic. Guides available for answering questions. Very nice gift shop...
Great staff, very friendly! Superb to get to know the history of the place. No spoilers, you should check it out. Great place for kids, also free!
Beautiful places to stroll and enjoy. Great manicured garden and mature succulent garden. I love the blue pots/vases around many settings. Benchs here and there. I go to paint in plein air, always a peaceful time. They also have farm animals and an old tractor. They give tours but I go to sit in peace. No cost but open to the public only certain hours most days.
A lot of good history I suggest you take the free tour they have
Beautiful place for wedding photo. Kind and nice staff!
Nice place to step back in time as you stroll the paths through the gardens, barns and shop. love to walk here
Very interesting place I wish I would have had more time to really visit it thoroughly
This is a beautiful place full of unique Californian history.
Tucked in a gated community..interesting place to see old LB living
Today, was my first visit to Rancho Los Alamitos. It is a hidden treasure in Long Beach. The gardens are beautiful and the animals were all nice to view and photograph. It was a pleasant and peaceful place to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Must seeSuper great place in long beachTake the tourStaff is super awesome !Great parkingGet there earlyThe best
Tour and grounds were nice. Tour guide was a nasty, nasty woman! My granddaughter put her finger on a table (shes only 8) and the woman yelled young lady if I catch you again I will bite your head off. My other granddaughter who is 7 put her hand on a billiard table and was chewed out. She scared the heck out of the granddaughters! She even yelled at me when I pointed to a dress in a closet...and I didnt even touch it!!
Great house tour and beautiful gardens
Wonderful hidden gem. California history at its finest.
Beautiful gardens, major historical & cultural significance for the local indigenous Tongva. This (and surrounding area) is/was the site of a significant trading center and point of emergence center, Puvuunga.
