Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is one of the area’s largest employers. Though much of the facility is off-limits to the prying eyes of nosy visitors, it features a Discovery Center chock-full of unique and educational exhibits designed to engage inquisitive minds.The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Discovery Center is a great place to spend a few hours when the weather isn’t conducive to outdoor activities. It’s generally a big hit with young and old visitors alike.Due to the sensitive nature of much of the research conducted onsite, you’ll need to sign up for a guided tour in advance.

This is a cool, strange little place. We spent about an hour there, but you could spend more if your kids are older or super into nuclear anything. My kids were 5, 7, 9. They had a cool scavenger hunt for the kids and everyone had an awesome time.

I was a graduate student employee at LLNL 1983-85. I remember when they opened this Discovery Center, protesters from the Bay area came out to protest the opening carrying signs that read Death Lab Indoctrinates Children. At lunchtime in the student lounge we would watch the protesters on the closed circuit TV feed from the surveillance cameras while we ate lunch. Ah, memories...

My grandson really enjoyed it there, thought it would have more, but very informative

If your kids, or yourself, are even remotely interested in science this is one of the best choices you could make for an outing. The history behind Lawrence Livermore is amazing to say the least, definitely intriguing and sometimes a little bit scary. If you live anywhere in the area this should be on your list of places to go.

Love that they offer this free program for local 5th grade classes.

Cool little free gallery showing what goes on at LLNL. If you can do the full tour on a Tuesday morning, definitely go for it. Book it months in advance though!
