I have been going to this place since I was about sixteen years old (thirty-three now) and I absolutely love it.. the animals are well taken care of, it’s clean, the staff is friendly and helpful.. And not that fake friendly you get everywhere else, they genuinely want to talk and get to know your wants and needs so both you and your new pet are happy..If anyone asks me for a good pet store I always say this place.. I highly recommend anyone reading this do they same.. they will take care of you..
Its not the cleanest place, but theyve got an awesome array of animals. From chameleons to opossums! The owner is extremely knowledgeable, and very friendly! And from what I understand theyre one of the only places in the area that can still sell rabbits.
I would have loved to have tried this place out but it didnt make sense for me.Was looking to add some fish to my new fish tank. They dont test water (was told when I called them), so being told that, how can I know Im making a safe choice for my new fish and current fish.Im sure its a great pet store since they do more than just fish. It just made sense for me to go to a dedicated Aquarium store where I can get my water tested and know that they know everything about fish so I have the confidence to make a sound decision.
We love the Animal store! been going since I was a kid with my father for all our small pets and supplies and now I go with my kids. Everyone is very friendly and super helpful. It is always clean inside and they take great care of all the animals!
Always have a great variety of products and interesting animals, staff is always great
We love this place! Excellent customer service!
After reading more reviews I realized the hedgehog I purchased was sick when I bought him. My hedgehog became very sick about a month after I took him home and then died quickly. I was told he was about 6 weeks old when I got him, but I saw the owner change the date on the paperwork and say it was wrong. This means this hedgehog probably looked like a baby because he was sick. My poor little guy
Great selection of pets! Owner is very nice and will give you great deals on accessories. Bought both of my Guinea pigs from there. Great pet store. Great shop! Support your small business!
The pets are sooooo cute. I wanted them all
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. It gets my budgies seal of approval.
Adopt dont shop. Everyone was in small tanks/cages. Really hope the tortoise was adopted from his/her 5x2ft bathtub. Totally inhumane. Too many fish per tank. Bunnies too many to a cage, feet yellow; some looked depressed up against the cage corner. Probably trying to have some kind of mental/physical space for themselves. For money, ppl breed animals to be sold at pet stores and pet supply stores. The sad thing is, these small enclosures are NOT temporary, and they end up living their lives in horror and pain. Hardly any animals get sold. And if they do, they are replaced by another who will suffer, often to death. Animals, like humans, can go insane from loneliness and boredom; not having freedom or really any rights. Please adopt an animal friend in need from a SHELTER.
Everyone is so helpful! They always have a great selection of fish.
Outstanding independent pet store. They have a wide range of animals: birds (big and small), ferrets, reptiles, rabbits, fish, etc. You want to speak with the man in the floral shirt (see my photos) for good advice. He is a kind person who has a great deal of useful and practical information to help you care for your new addition to your family. The store is clean and well maintained. There is no offensive pet store smell here. For those interested in birds, this is the store for you. This store will let you see and touch the bird you want to take home BEFORE you buy it! This helps you determine wherther you can more easily bond with the bird. The variety of pets and products for pets is impressive. The store space is small, so dont bring too many people to the store at once.Overall, this independent pet store is an ideal place for choosing a nice pet for your home.
They have a pet 50 year old tortoise in a pen thats 3x3. Its cruel. The animal can barely turn around. They have a very good selection of small and exotic animals and supplies.
The owner is a really nice guy and the animals are well taken care of. I bought two snakes from there and they are very healthy and incredible.
I was just there with my girls. Emily, employee she completely ignored us when my daughter asked question. She was communicating other customers so nicely, but with my girls she ignored twice. It feels like she is discriminating us. So disappointed never coming back
Pleasant selection of items and a small cozy shop. Only thing that concerned me when I went was that the birds looked a little cramped, other than that it’s a lovely shop
Pricey, but the owner knows what he is doing! A good old fashioned pet shop. All the animals are well taken care of and healthy.
This store has very good prices on small animal bedding. The staff and owner are very friendly also
It is the worst experience ever. I do not know why this store is still open. It should be closed. The animals are in unhealthy environment and most of them are sick. I bought kittens that were sick and they literally died two days after. He did not refund the money or give store credit or replacement as written on the receipt. Hope they shut down his business.
I have been coming here to get my birds wings clipped. They always take good care of my birds. Their service is quick and they are super friendly. If you have any questions they are always happy to answer. Definitely my go to place to get my birds wing clipped.
Ive stopped in the store a few times and am a big fan. The owner and employees are very knowledgeable about all the animals and if they dont know the answer to the questions you ask theyll point you in the direction of resources that can help you. The live animals that Ive seen (bunnies, ferrets, guinea pigs, and a sulcata tortoise etc) all appear to be in appropriate environments. Last time I was in I was hyped by Emily who was very knowledgeable and helpful!
I cant understand if it was me or if their animals were just sick. But bought a couple gupis and couple frogs. Set up their tanks. Everything good went to sleep. Woke up everything was dead. Im so sad it was the last African albino clawed frog they had
Kenn is the best and he really knows and loves animals. If you want an animal that you know has been cared for - this is the place to go.
Great customer service. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and animals are healthy and happy.
The owner of the store is condescending and is rude to me and his place is under ventilated. The animals are kept in small cages and most of them are in unhealthy conditions. Animal control should take a look at this place.
Originally I wanted to get my green cheek conure at Parrot Star however I been visiting this pet store for a while and thought I should support my local pet store. I really feel that the staff is knowledgable in every factor of animals, however I would say customer service should be meticulously looked at. My experience in managing a huge company and I know it may not be comparable to a pet store but customer service is key. I was not to happy about the experience from picking out my bird I feel that I was rushed and did not get the sellers full support and attention. I took my bird home May 05 and unfortunately family circumstance arose with my dad going into surgery tomorrow and it was very irresponsible of myself and I can own up to that. I had my father call because I was highly disappointment and embarrassed in myself. The seller just recommended to give the bird to Chicago bird rescue and was not sympathetic about the circumstances. For it being only two days old I find it unprofessional because Petsmart, Petco, and even rescue shelters have a satisfaction guaranteed for return. Loosing this much money during this pandemic is was definitely a lost and not the pet store responsibility but should make exceptions and there to create more prospects for the long run of people coming to this pet store. DO NOT purchase here UNLESS YOU DONE YOUR RESEARCH. I have reached out to several avian pet store and they said this is a very unprofessional move with also knowing the buyers irresponsible actions. but we are all humans we think something works and it just doesnt. I definitely love the variety of birds this pet store has. BUT I WILL NEVER COME BACK TO THIS PET STORE. I would go to PARROT STAR OR BIRDMAN they seem to be more friendly and would not let you leave without all bases are covered and will not rush you. In addition Chicago bird rescue has so many birds you can adopt. WILL NOT BE COME BACK TO THIS PET STORE. I hope no one experiences this cause it is very sad and unfortunately.
I got a bunny from there and I took care of it. It died literally a week later, he was most definitely sick. I wouldn’t recommend coming to this place at all. The owner or one of the workers were very rude.
Thos store is a hidden gem! All the animals and supplies! We couldve spent all day in there. Staff was awesome and store was super clean!! We will be back!!!
Got a kitten from here a week ago. It was having some really bad diarrhea, but we thought maybe it was a change in food. After a visit to the vet, it was found to have the parasite, Giardia. Conveniently, the receipt says they guarantee the health of the pet for everything other than... parasites. Its like they knew about it. Anyway, weve since spent hundreds of dollars to treat the kitten, and they still arent getting better. The vet said its usually caused by contaminated water and/or feces. Considering the kitten was in a crate with about 7 other kittens, they all would have gotten it, which means that there are several other people out there dealing with the same thing as us right now. I wont ever go back here.
I bought 2 kittens from them on Saturday. The owner told us if we bought 2 the second would be half off. We bought one at $200 and then when I came back 2 hours later for the 2nd one he would only lower the price to $175. I love the kittens but they are currently having diarrhea and I’m taking them to the vet. Hopefully there isn’t anything wrong with them.Update: the kittens had so many parasites and kept having diarrhea that we had to give them up to the vet we took them to because they would only keep reinfecting each other. DO NOT BUY kittens from this store! Worst place to get a kitten.
The owner was super nice! and he knows the care for each animal, he also has great deals! I recommend this place a lot.
Very nice and helpful people and great animals to choose from or just to go look at.
No words can express my disgust at the complete disregard for the conditions these animals are kept in. I wanted to purchase a parakeet and was directed to a small dark cage on the floor where these birds were kept. The barren cage was occupied by a number of birds and against my better judgement I bought one of these pathetically kept babies. I actually felt that I was rescuing the bird. This is an awful inhumane environment, and I can only hope the birds health has not been dangerously impacted by the surroundings.
Everyone was very friendly..i bought a hedgehod early in March, I was told HE was 10 weeks old. Now today I have 2 baby hedgehogs and now I am clueless.
This is the place where I got my rabbit, she was a baby and she had grey fur and had blue eyes. She was the best but she past away yesterday, she the best and I want to thank the store for giving me the most precious and beautiful thing in world. Also her name was Luna.
I bought guniea pigs two days ago and they literally died today. He lied about their health and I believed him. Worst experience
Great service and help.
So cool
The knowledge level of the owner is outstanding. You can tell family style business. I respect that. I would highly recommend if famies with kids are thinking of owning any type of pet especially exotic. Here is you top resource. Honest forth wright and will tell you what it takes to owning a pet that you will choice so no surprises. This will help you and your family experience the best energy for family with your new pet. Even is you need time for the family to decide what to get. An excellent multiple field trips for kida and elementary junior high schools.
Very nice store. Friendly store owner.
It was an amazing experience here and I was really happy about how nice the workers are treating us and the animals and they provide everything you need for your new pet.when I got my green cheek conure the worker was with us the whole time and they even gave everything we need like the food toys and the cage. This place I amazing
The rabbit died after 12 days..
Unique blend of animals to own as pets with expert advice from owner. Prices are fair and just judging from the cleanliness and calmness of the animals, all is well done in the care and support of this Pet Store Operation. Highly recommended.
Pog
Amazing animals and very helpful staff willing to answer questions.
Employees were very knowledgeable and friendly and gave me some good advice about choosing a bird and about making arrangement for the bird after I die since the bird will out live me. Maybe not only the type of parrot, but the age of the bird.
One of the few good pet stores left around. Ken is a class act. Ive been going here well over 20 years and still do and we live nearly 40 min drive away from here.
An amazing selection of animals. Birds, lizards, small mammals, fish, snakes and more. Its like a zoo with all the variety. Ive found the owner and staff to be helpful and knowledgeable and their assistance over the years has helped me out greatly over the years. My only complaints are that its a little cramped with all the stock and that because of the size of the store, product selection is less than what you find at the chain stores.
This is a great locally owned business! The owner is super knowledgeable, and you get great service. Theyve got live birds, rabbits, reptiles, and plenty of things for your small pet. Prices are very reasonable.
We came into the store to ask for Kittens, Sugar gliders and Bush Babies (galago). I know Bush Babies are not legal in Illinois but they’re legal in 6 other states. I just wanted to know if he knew more about permits etc. However the response from a Caucasian older male (not sure if he’s the owner or an employee) has disgraceful. He was completely condescending at first and had a horrible attitude. I continue to ask more questions as I intended to buy now or later but he continue to respond even more arrogant and irritated. He’s behavior is completely unacceptable, I simply came to get information before buying, that’s all! I don’t recommend this store unless you want to be treated unfairly and in a very condescending way. Shop somewhere else!If that’s the way he treats humans being, I bet that’s how he treats the poor animal he sells. I wouldn’t be surprise if they were abuse as well. He’s attitude was completely unacceptable! I was completely surprised by his attitude. Not sure if he’s racist or what? Regardless, everyone should be treated fairly! I only came to buy or adopt a pet!
Extremely helpful & kind
Its hard to find a great family owned business like this. They know their stuff and have amazing pets to find that you cannot find at the typical high volume chain. I highly recommend supporting this business. If they ever go away, you wont be able to find a replacement for such a great store.
Alot of different animals cool shop
I love this place, very friendly, good pricing,& the staff knowledgeable.
The Animals seemed overpopulated and crowded in their cages. They need to do better cleaning and care for the animals
Nice and knowledgeable people with a wide variety of animals.
This store was amazing. Honestly my dream job. Animals are my passion and that store felt like home. The owner is super nice and welcoming. Very clean animal enclosures. Would love to be employed there. Emily was a great help with finding the bulbs and other things I needed. Thank you so much.
I love the setup of the store they have very nice exotic animals love the birds the fish everything the only thing that I did not like was the staff they was very unprofessional did not help me out with anything did not ask me if I needed help nothing not even a hello. right when I walked into the door they was in the back talking not paying attention to nobody in the front people was walking in and they didnt bother asking if they need help. I did not have a good experience going with the staff but overall I did like the store and the Animals there.
My boyfriend and I were here a few months back and I finally remembered the name of the store so I could give it a proper review. My immediate impression was of some disgust. There were no employees on the floor and some man and his children were pulling bunnies out onto the floor and manhandling them. We had called in advance for feeder rats and has to walk to the back room after being actively ignored for 5 minutes. Turns out they didnt have what we wanted, even though they told us they did over the phone.Bird cages are stacked on top of each other. Reptiles are in improper habitats, and staff were incredibly rude.I work in a pet store and I wouldnt dare be that negligent.
They have a good selection of reptile items, which is sometimes hard to find in a regular pet store. They also sell both pet rats and feeders. The staff seems knowledgeable and friendly, and were happy to help. Really great store. I will be going there from now on.
Has great animals, but staff doesnt, acknowledge your presence. They have a cool big tortoise, also theres no prices on several fish tanks or other pets.
One of my first pet stores visited and still continues to be a favorite.
I do not recommend this place and these are the reasons why.1. I saw snake feces in one cage and a shed. This can be easily cleaned.2. Hamsters cage looked dirty according my girlfriend and she saw couple of feces scattered around the floor. The paper towel was brown too.3. Parrots looked like they were in crowded space and the birds kept by cages stacked on top of each other.4. Birds cages were wayyyyyyy too small. I also saw multiple birds in very small area.5. There were no hedgehog and ferrets and at the front of the store, they mentioned they had them.6. Some snakes did not have any hides in their cage.7. The whole place smelled weird. If they took care of the animals, this should not happen.Go at your own risk. I did because I saw overall good reviews but some very bad ones and wanted to see the enviroment.
Awesome owner. Knows a ton! Very helpful. Unlike box stores, this pet shop actually sells pets! Awesome place!!!
My daughter and I bought a bird today from the store the owner is fabulous extremely helpful and the bird is magnificent his a cherry had Perritte with name Toby. If you are looking for exotic animals this is the place to go to
This place is way better than pet smart I discourage such people who post bad reviews on a business just because something didnt quite work for them. We need to have basic knowledge about the pets that we are planning to buy and shouldnt be a dumb expecting that the store will take care of everything. Its easy to shut something down but too hard to start.
Very friendly and super knowledgeable with great prices and plenty of variety
We got 2 bunnys and then another! Cozy little place
Nice change of pace from your tradition big box stores
If you support animal abuse then go to the store. I cannot tell you how many times I have been to the store that I have complained. It needs to be shut down. Animals are kept in small cages that dont mimic their environments. It was all about money for the store. I hope one day it is shut down. Years ago I purchased a couple of ground squirrels because I felt horrible for them. They were miserable living at my house and I found the missing she wary Wisconsin they gave them free range of land. And who re-introduce them to other species of their kind. This store needs to be shut down it only supports animal abuse
Kenn the owner is a very nice guy and very understanding. We had some issues with a rabbit and he went above and beyond to help us solve those, taking care of our feelings first. You do not get that type of customer service from a big box store. As we continue our rabbit journey, I have faith that Kenn will make sure in the end we are happy and we have our furry friend taken care of.
Their parrots live in a horrible environment here. The cages are crowded and dirty. Many birds look stressful.Besides, the birds here don’t seem hand raised, but are “manufactured” like chicken. Those type of birds are aggressive to human, scared to leave cage, and require WAY more work to establish human bond.Lastly, the birds are overpriced, for example a green cheek conure is priced at $425 while they are usually priced around $200 elsewhere. If you want to get a friendly bird and / or love bird, buy elsewhere, or better directly from a breeder.
Great store for small animals with a friendly and knowledgeable owner
This is a great store with healthy animals and an abundance of supplies to keep them happy. Ive bought a chameleon and a parrot from this place along with all their necessary supplies and everyone / everything is in great shape. Definitely a great alternative to chain pet stores. The owner Ken is also a great guy; funny, energetic and cares deeply about his animals.
Bought a hedgehog with everything needed. Great service and is an excellent place to take your kids. A variety type of animals for sale.
Unbelievable selection. Randomly stopped in while in the area - blew me away. Tremendous selection of pets, including many that you will not find anywhere else.
Small clean space with lots of animals. Knowledgeable staff. Good for field trips ages 5 and up.
Good selection, knowledgeable staff and one of the only places were you can get rats to feed reptiles
Very good collection of fishes and birds. They owner is knowledgeable about the animals in the store
I should state, with everyone claiming its a zoo full of exotic animals, that bearded dragons, chameleons, and ferrets are not exotic. Yes they carry 100+ lbs tortoise, giant parrots, and 3+foot long pythons... but while a large python is rare most stores carry them as babies, and few would hold them enough years to allow them to get to that size, the food alone would cost hundreds, which is why all of these animals cost in the hundreds, even the smaller ones. I did notice the store being understaffed, so I can admire the amount of effort and money that goes into caring for so many animals, youd need a full petsmart of employees with twice the experience to accomplish what they do in this shop. In addition, every store in the area caries only male animals, so that was the chief reason to come in. While the owner did answer a few of my questions I could tell he was tired and had a lot to do... I did notice that all of the good reviews involve people spending at least 100$ or being family folk with their kids, while the poor reviews hardly mentioned buying any animals at all. So perhaps, like any owner operated business they may prioritize families and people with money and the desire to spend it, something that big box store goers take for granted, the fact that chains with good employees treat everyone equally ragardless if your buying crickets or a 100$ canary. But again, I will have to revisit in the morning hours and update this, perhaps I will catch the owner with more time on his hands. I only suspect hes the owner because he was the only one present, answering questions, tagging products, and running between the back and the register at the same time. That, and showing the bare minimum of patience without necessarily making you feel unwanted, despite me getting the whole if you want their history open an encyclopedia, if your not buying it I am not going to play the teacher vibe, while I should clarify is a vibe and not established fact, I did come in for the 1st time, ask 2 questions about the quail and gerbil, and spend less than 50$. But regardless, places like this are rare and few between, as are their animals, and the prices are (I am sure) reflective of this rarity. I will have to return, this is definitely worth a return trip, and update or re review this place if neccesary.
Great store. Owner was very friendly. I bought 2 guinea pigs. There is so many animals, anything you can think of. Clean store. Highly recommend!!!
They cared when i spoke of my spiders death.they were so kind to hold another one for me.they w ere very helpful answered all my questions.they are just caring people.thanks for all of it
A great story to buy animals and supplies alike, but remember to do plenty of research before you do buy any animal
Ive read all the reviews, maybe I just got lucky, but I really like this place. I bought my rabbit from there a few months ago Im happy with everything. I think the staff is really great actually. Maybe the people complaining had a bad day or what not. Im happy with the animal store. Thanks guys
CUTE LITTLE STORE... VERY, VERY NICE!
Wow amazing exotic animals. I wish they had more stores like this. I have a flying squirrel and they carried everything I need and more. Very educated on the animals as well.
If I was in the market for what they offer I would definitely go there. My friend needs a snail for his take so I will be back.
Nice place all kind of animals great pet store.
Hello this is my expirience at this store. I wanted to adopt a leopard gecko from this shop because a family friend donated their tortise to this shop so I checked it out. While at the store it was very unoriginized and filthy. I spoke directly with the owner of this establishment and when adopting the gecko he told me that this form of sand would be okay for the enclosure. So i bought the sand along with the rest of the supplies. I noticed that my leo wasn’t eat and the set up of his cage was spot on except for that sand. Now I soon found out that sand can cause impaction in leo’s but i didn’t know that at the time. My lizard then passed away shortly after that and I went back to the shop to let the manager know that this lizard passed away and his opinion on how the animal died. I wouldn’t handle the lizard the first few days I bought it so that wasn’t the reason. The owner gave me some random reason as to how my lizard could have died. I then asked for a healthy lizard. I bought the lizard (which was skinny but still a juvenile). Some time goes by and my second lizard passes away. I never returned to this establishment since and I now know that my lizards passed away from either lack of knowledge about impaction from the owner or over all unhealthy breeding methods. Either way, Do Not adopt a reptile or any animal that is challenging to care for from this establishment.
Always a pleasure to visit. The staff are all great and the prices are reasonable. Perfect for anyone who has or wants small animals.
Nicest guy is always working there and they have a great selection of stuff I can’t find elsewhere!
Im from out of town and what I saw in this store was just awful all your animals need to be treated better with proper habitats and diets you would have less problems with sick animals and malnutrition in your store also selling fish with ick on sale to people that dont know better shows that all you care about is money you cant just say its all going out the door at some point and just not care while they are in your care your reptiles dont have proper food lighting or heat you have wild animals for sale that should not be caged you cant trap a opossum and slap a price tag on it.
