We really wanted to go inside and see this historic home. But because it was a holiday (Labor Day) the hours were shortened. But we were still able to take good pictures outside.

I love when history is salvaged. Up north there are many historic homes and sites that are preserved because there are people who are interesting in saving history. Sadly we dont see this enough in Oklahoma. With that said. Mattie Beals house is a fun tour, the tour guides are incredibly knowledgeable and it really gives you a look into the era of her life. The house also boasts some really cool ideas like the faucet less bathtub, the hanging ballroom, the curved front doors and the cinnamon roll banister. Great place to go and step back in time. The only thing that would make this even better is a working garden. I am not sure she had one, but the ability to incorporate plants and flora that were local to the area and around in that time would be amazing. Mattie Beal house gives one hope that more historic sites around Oklahoma will be saved. Photo credit: Jessica Stone Photography

One of Lawrons most historic sights enriched with facts and antiques, great for the whole family. Look for special events or reserve for your own purposes, great for weddings & fun raisers. Take an educational journey in to the past. Theres an auction of furniture and other pieces of history every so many years so keep a look out for listings and other social events to be had.

Spent a wonderful hour here with docents (guides) Emma and Phyllis and as we were the only ones we had plenty of time to ask lots of questions and get the complete history of the house and its owners. Our main guide Emma was very knowledgeable and both ladies were a delight to speak with and willingly shared. What an interesting lady Mattie Beal was at the age of 21 to come to Lawton as a single lady looking for land and entering a lottery and being lucky to be drawn second out of 50,000 people! She had many marriage proposals since she became suddenly wealthy upon claiming 160 acres of prime land and her and her husband built this gorgeous home. This is a great way to spend an afternoon (only open from noon to 3pm Thursday through Sunday) at a cost of $4 per adult to see how a high-society family lived at the beginning of our state in 1907.They also rent the home out for weddings, photo shoots, receptions, dinner parties, etc. I highly recommend it if you like touring historical homes and learning of old state history.
