Cute, FREE, museum right on mass! Definitely worth stepping in and taking a look. Their kid programs in the summer are a wonderful escape from the heat and dont forget to take the little ones to the top floor to visit the playhouse. Reserved free parking for museum guests in the alley behind the building, handicap entrance on the side.
This museum has a ton of artifacts and information about the history of Lawrence, Kansas. It includes everything from the civil war to civil rights. It has a lot of displays about University of Kansas basketball. It also has stuff about wheelchair basketball. It has displays about the raid on Lawrence by Quantrail and his raiders. It also has a display about John Brown, the famous abolitionist.
Nice museum. Good local history exhibits. Nice old building. Friendly staff. They offer a wide range of family friendly activities. Great place to learn about Lawrence!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The history was wonderfully presented. We were warmly greeted and given an brief history of the building which enhanced our tour. It truly gave you a glimpse of the history of Kansas, especially the section dedicated to the influx of newly freed slaves that came to the free state. As pointred out by our greeter, the building itself is a treasure to behold!
Great collection and good layout. Not too big. BEAUTIFUL building!
Very Good Service
Amazing and organize place but staffs were not welcoming and accommodating.
Nice place to get lost!
Had a GREAT time! My granddaughter had been wanting to go for a while!
Great program on Kansas ecology/draught and dust storms from 1856-1860. Excellent place to meet and great staff.
Visually Informative; Some of the visuals get you to reflect on the circumstances of the time... but as you live in todays social climate you may come off... What were they thinking... duh... . But in all reality... todays social issues are just as fragile and littered with the lose of life as it was then... History repeats itself once again... What has changed???
Neat place to learn about the old home town.
I never realized how much history this place held until today.Growing up, I would come to this museum constantly with family, friends, or on school trips, but I never really understood the impact that these artifacts and historic treasures have had on this city. From the displays on Quantrills Raid (which came through the street that I grew up on; fun fact) the Historic Smells drawer (easily my favorite thing here), and the information about slavery and Kansass history as a literal free state, this all really humbled me and gave me a perspective shift.I think Ill be visiting this establishment more often in the coming years.Thank you for that.(Also, if Parks and Rec could do literally anything in regards to the Zen Gardens general upkeep and maintenance, that would be just swell...)
Beautiful building with great exhibits and fun activities for children. The summer program for kids theyre doing is wonderful.
very friendly staff and volunteers
Wonderful collection of important local history, especially in regards to the burning of Lawrence by Quantrills raiders in 1863.
Wonderful! We used to take field trips here as kids, and we even got to tour the top floor, which is off limits to the public. Great place!
If you like history. Its fun, lots of stairs
GREAT FORUM WITH LAWRENCE SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES
I love this museum and will always duck inside when Im downtown on a rainy day. The staff is wonderful and have their own stories to tell. There are always things to see and exhibits to enjoy. My favorite is the Archive Room where you can spend hours enjoying books, articles, and documents on local history. The staff in the Archive room is very helpful and will do what they can to help you find what you are looking for.
Awesome hands on museum for kids.
I loved the shoe polishing chair
A great place for local history. Best research help I ever experienced
Great little museum that had a lot of information about Lawrence.
Some really awesome dude named Cole works here. This place is small but definitely bigger on the inside then it appears to be from the outside. This musuem just might serve its distinct purpose (history of Lawrence) Better than most museums Ive been to.The staff here does an excellent job with exhibits, uncovering history, and sharing that with citizens. Great for a quick visit. Take the kids, if you have any, and drop in when you are downtown.
Great place for a family. They have interactive displays aa well!
Great exhibit on 2nd floor of KS in the mid to late 1800s. Worthwhile and well done.
I always enjoy walking thru the exhibits here, theres always something new to spot. Come for the history stay for the stories about Lawrence and those who make it great.
Wonderful place to go if you have a free afternoon and you dont want to stay home. Great especially if its too hot or too cold to be outside. It was fun to learn about Lawrences history!
I personally really enjoyed going there. The Museum of the quiet stale type, what you could expect from a small history museum. I have no complaints whatsoever this stuff for friendly I enjoyed the self-paced atmosphere and the option for tours if you like. the only thing I would advise is that if you have children or to bring a stroller and prepare them to be bored, this is at no fault of the museum its simply because well its a history museum its not very Interactive or aimed directly at young children and thats okay its not supposed to! Its certainly not the atmosphere theyre going for, if your child is over 3 though they will have a great time playing in the playhouse it is small but to a child imagination it might well be everything! My review about family was only honest because my visit was with our young toddler. As far as what is in the museum Im browsing around itself its very interesting, we learned a lot about Lawrence that we certainly did not know before as well as many historical spots that were pointed out and Watkins that we could later go visit. I believe they do City tours using a bus as well please dont quote me on that but if so thatd be another star I would add. It is definitely worth a couple hours of your weekend!!! Extremely interesting, friendly staff, well kept, elevators if needed.
If I had more time, I would have spent it at this amazing little museum; A great look back at how the history we know affected Lawrence. Not a lot of exhibits, but a lot of info on what they do have, and how it fits in with today.
Great little museum with many great exhibits. Worth checking out when in town.
