The best Greens in the area, walk on course only. So choose your timing wisely on weekends they are busy! Not uncommon to wait long to tee off. Have carts on first come first serve basis. Staff is very friendly. Course is still improving greens are great fairways are getting better. You can tell they are investing time and money into each hole. This is a home favorite for me and the guys. Always and easy grab and go play course!
My best friend’s first words when we got back to the car, “can we talk about how terrible that golf course was?”The wait was disgusting- but not just on the first hole but every single one. Took 4:30 hours to complete 9 - over a half hour just to start. Each hole had a wait time of 15-20 minutes.Next, the actual course was abuse. The holes either sat 20-80 yards below or above the tee box. And the majority of the holes you couldn’t spot the flag stick on your first and maybe even your second shot.Speaking of the tee boxes - they were never level, filled with rocks, mud or over grown grass. Same with the “fairways” - many of which had tree branches overhanging and blocking the green. You had to punch from the fairway. The greens were pavement and filled with divots. The other guests were quite rude and would just come onto your fairway and take their time hitting. On one occasion, I waited 10 minutes for a foursome to play from my fairway. Another guest told me I had to wait my turn when I was preparing to tee off on 10 when I was instructed to play the back nine - he was still putting on 9.Finally, the service was awful. Both push carts we rented were broken. We also had someone tell us it was a beautiful day to wait...Would not recommend with so many better golf courses in the area.
$50 for 9 holes. Teed off at 10, currently sitting at the third tee 3 groups back at 1130 with 2 more groups behind us waiting. Multiple groups of two in front of us, no pace enforcement, conditions are average, most carts are falling apart. No tee times is a cool feature but you pay for it both mentally and monetarily.
A tricky course thanks in part to the large elevation changes. Many of the holes are somewhat narrow and a few are quite short and hook to one side. You need a consistent aim, and a controlled swing to stay on the faraway. Been coming here for years.
Felt rushed because of no tee time. The Tee boxes were not kept well. Prices were incredibly high for the quality of the course.
Had a great morning here as one of the first off the tees. This is definitely not a beginners course unless you feel like looking for your ball in the trees in lots of small shrubs. Very narrow course. Greens are small and theyre all round off at the edges so theyre very hard to approach from a distance with rolling off. If you plan to carry your clubs youre in for a work out. Its all hills up and down through to the finish. Ill definitely be back but Ill make sure to get a cart!!
Pretty nice public course you can just walk on that has a lot of really nice elevation changes and dog leg holes.
A lot of tee boxes and a lot of tee boxes and greens side by side. Too many blind shots for a crowded course.
Course in excellent condition price is great friendly staff. Get out here for best deal in the DMV.
The holes are so close together that other golfers can be distraction
The course is much better now than years ago.. The fairways are green., the greens are true, and the cartpaths are in great shape. If you played the course ten years ago and throught it was a country farm, come back and try it again.
Friendly staff. Course is fine, affordable
The girls that worked in the country club were very nice and polite.
Greens are in great shape.
Course is only short on distance, not challenge. Great condition and fantastic staff
Nice par 4 dont need driver really
Nice greens with decent prices
Nice time.
Great course for the price
Im not an avid golfer, but this course is a hidden gem in my book. Great availability and challenging links. You definitely get your moneys worth here.
Horrible experience...the old nasty white female( I think) in the pro shop had a terrible attitude. The way she was responding to my questions was the sign she had no clue about golf/ customer service. I bought 2 hot dogs and it looked rotten or spoiled. The hot dogs had a purplish brown tint to it with reddish lines. I wasn’t even offered a refund for the hot dogs. I should have eaten the hot dogs and got food poisoning and sued the course. I did not see a starter or a marshal out on the course so the play was extremely slow.. I would never recommend this course for even a beginner
Very convenience to playerNo appointment, no tea timeVery nice to customerVery kind.. nice course
Nice and clean. Well maintained. Quite challenging for first time here .
The course itself is just okay. Its a bit beat up, not super fancy, and pretty short. But the prices are very, very low so its great value. If youre just starting out this is a great place to come because of the price. When youre hooking and slicing your way to double par on most holes you dont really benefit much from a perfectly manicured course. And if your ball does land somewhere rough, just move it - youre probably not coming to Gunpowder for serious competition. Ive run into my fair share of nastiness on golf courses (huge rocks in bunkers) at much higher prices.Probably the worst thing about this course is getting stuck behind a group of four middle aged Korean ladies. If you come here a few times it will happen at some point. Ive found its best to just skip the hole theyre on and get ahead of them so you can enjoy uninterrupted, wait-free golf. The greens fees are allegedly good all day but Ive never bothered to play more than 18. But doing 27 for $19 sure is appealing.
I really enjoyed this course. Its very well taken care of. The fairways and greens are in great shape. The layout of the course is interesting, but in a good way. It is just challenging enough to be fun but not boring. Its a good waking course if you want an exercise but carts are also available. The rates are great too. The only gripe Id have is that the whole course is fast. Its an older course that was built on an old rock quarry, so there you go. Due to this, a good shot can turn into a bad shot real quick and a bad shot can turn into a good shot. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this course and I am likely to return.
Good place to learn Golf, but staff is not much friendly
It was a nice course some areas needed repairs but all in all I would play there again
Great course for solos and afternoon deals!
If you are a scratch golfer, gunpowder may not be the course for you. If you are a mid to high handicapper, an infrequent player, or one who doesnt need the trappings of a high-end course, Gunpowder is for you! The course is reasonably challenging, rewarding precise shot placement over long drives, and the postage - stamp greens will test your putting skill. The staff is very nice, and will go out of their way to ensure you have a pleasant golf experience. They offer a late day special of $12 (walking) after noon and a $10 twilight special. For the price, this course merits 5 stars!
Nice green
Loved this course, the natural setting picturesque. Tricky on some holes, a fair challenge. Had some problems with slow parties that mixed walkers and carts and appeared to be an unofficial party of 7. Definitely plan to try it again tho.
This place is just simply amazing. I especially love how the golf course is well maintained. Went here with my family the previous weekend and we loved it. Definitely looking forward to coming back soon.
Fun course at a great price. And very Walker friendly which can be hard to find in the area.
Played here a few times. Decent course. I dont play a lot of golf, so I dont really have any comparisons.
The course is usually in great shape however you will notice a lot of ball marks are not repaired on the greens. They allow you to schedule in advance in order to have a longer time on the course which I appreciate. The course is reasonably challenging for a long time golfer.
Had a great day, for 1st day of the season, shot 95,#8killed me, had a ball....
Challenging. Its a links style course. Very pleasant, though.
Im a lousy golfer but this course is fun even if Im standing too close to the ball after I hit it!!
My husband had a great time here with his friends. Its run by some very nice people and its a great place for golf lovers to relax and just enjoy your day.
Beautiful scenery, well maintained, and challenging course. Staff are very welcoming and friendly. Good food and cold drinks all add up for a wonderful day for a round of golf. Enjoy!!
I have been playing the course for over thirty years. When I first played there, I was smitten. It had the feel of yesterday. The front side, tree lined and picturesque, the back side more open and dead pan, rock laden. Yes, greens were watered with sprinkler heads that popped up in the center of the green. Yes, on the seventh hole and fifteenth hole, you could not see where your tee ball landed. Times change and in 2015 the course is in incredible shape. Havent played there in a couple years? You will recognize the layout, but a complete irrigation system is now in place. Fairways are lush and the rough is the wrong place to leave a shot. The little pop up sprinkler heads green center are no more. Greens now roll and you can attempt to navigate the natural twists and turns unimpeded. There is a large cadre of golfers that have not teed it up and scoff at the yardage. They totally overlook the fact that the distance from point A to point B is not easily traversed. The course is up and down and around peaks and valleys. A creek runs through it. You certainly can go for the gusto off some tees, but should you be a bit wayward, a big number is waiting for you. Gunpowder is the best kept secret in the area. Golf here is affordable. The staff is helpful. That chap you meet on the first tee in a miss matched outfit with clubs older than yours, well keep you money in your pocket, he will dance around the course...hitting it to locations and reading greens that will be a mystery to you. They dont need 7,000 yards to beat you...they just putter along. Make one round here and rediscover the joy of a game of a lifetime.
Good course and good prices
Great employees! Great prices! The greens are in great shape. The fairways are solid. Also, The course is very challenging but very rewarding
For 18 holes I havent seen a better value. The course isnt in perfect condition but was better than I had expected. The holes were challenging and provided good variety. The staff was extremely friendly and appreciative of my business.I only have three issues with this course...1) It was not always clear where I was supposed to go to get to the next tee after finishing a hole.2) Driving the cart paths was like going off roading on an ATV a lot of the time.3) There is construction going on next to the course that was a little noisy. All of these issues were minor in the sense that I enjoyed playing and there isnt a lot of opportunity to play 18 holes in the area on a nice course for a reasonable price. I will definitely play here again.
Great for startes at golf but they dont keep, the pace of play up. I went by myself and it took 3 hours and 15 minutes to play 9 paid for 18 and I approached the course about issue and wanted to simply rain check back, nine due to darkness and time to play and they were rude about,it. Not a good experience
$24 for 18 holes at 2pm on 8/15/2017. Course was actually in decent shape. The slow gas carts with a max speed was only thing to complain about. Pace of play was good and greens rolled. A little short, but tight. Not a good course for beginners. Bring a few balls if you are new.Proshop was a little dingy but the price to play fits.
Well maintained course with a friendly staff. Decent pace of play.
Bring lofted wedges, rock hard greens, layup and watch balls roll off surface.
Course was great
I am a beginner - but it is really fun! they have all the stuff you need.
I play this course with friends every week & of course for us seniors its incredibly cheap. Ive played many courses in the area & the holes here are more interesting than any other course in the area. The 16th, which we call the signature hole, is extremely challenging.
Exceptional Customer Service, you are treated like a member from tee to green, I fell in Love with it from the beginning, felt like I was in Scotland as the Mist rolled in today! Family-owned And operated, i had a great time and my Love of the game of golf was rekindled today at Gunpowder Golf,Many, many thanks to Linda and Family!!!Darren P. Hurley
Not too bad, although I like more scenic courses
Course is in terrible shape. Not worth 15 bucks. Fairways are very spotty to say the least. If you want to practice your bunker shots from the tee box, this is your course. No yardages anywhere and the yardages on the scorecard were far from right. They wonder why there are bees on all of the carts. Probably cuz they dont wash them off. Wouldnt come back.
Fun links course will cool, hilly terrain
Things I like about Gunpowder golf include the low price and that they dont reserve tee times. Others have cited the lack of yardage markers and clear signage which I concede. This year, the fairways and greens were in good condition, the woods free enough of underbrush to make it possible to find errant balls. The staff are helpful and dont herd you to stay on time on the course.
Outstanding family owned golf course and well worth the money.
Great twilight pricing. The course condition is poor, but if you fade the ball, youll feel like DJ by the time you are done.
Course is in great condition.
Good
Great course excellent price, very friendly and helpful staff, if you dont play here youre missing out on the best deal in this area.
Used the chip and putt practice area. Great set-up, and value.
Surprised regarding upgrades since here about 2 years ago, greens were in great shape.
Decent course with some very challenging holes and dirt cheap!
Good time .
Cheap. Decent course. Not too crowded on an average weekend.
There are lots of options for golf in the area. Gunpowder is what it is. Its like back in the 50s someone found a piece of land, and said, put a tee here. Put a green there. And cut down the trees in between.I cant tell you whether youd like it or not. If youre looking for a beautiful course, with a beautiful clubhouse, youre going to have to spend more than 20 bucks.I think it has to be walked to be best appreciated. Its interesting in that it really follows the contours of the land. I think it would be improved if they didnt have cart paths, or carts. I think that has almost like a golf roots feel to it. . .and not differentiating much between the rough and the fairway, or having good yardage markers is part of the charm. Very natural feeling. It has a several holes youd call par 3.5 and maybe one 4.5.There are lots of elevation changes and the small greens and contours really challenge you to think out your approach on some holes. The greens all have 2 holes in them (and sometimes a sprinkler) and you can just move the flag to the other hole when youre putting. The par 3s are distinctive, and challenging, with two (8 and 11) being cut right into the side of a hill. The 16th is a two-shot roller coaster that goes from an elevated tee to an plateau that falls off on 3 sides and then rolls down and back up to an elevated green with trouble all around. The course should be played just to see that hole. The condition of the fairways is the biggest problem. If they were in better shape, Id love this course, but youre left with too many inconsistent lies.
Course was ok when the price was $5 twilight. Its now $10,$2 dollars off the regular price. I was told the price went up due to repairs on the course. I saw no improvement. On hole six youre hitting in the blind, hitting up a hill. I give this course a 1 rating. It must be under new management.
-Walk on only-Great prices-Good course conditions-Par 70When I tell others that Ive recently played here, they usually wince. Ive played here twice in the last 6 months. From what I understand, the course used to be in far worse condition. Currently (oct-2016) it is not that bad. Greens are lush and healthy. No one fixes their ball marks which sucks but rarely do I ever see Marshalls inforcing it on any Golf course. Fairways are cut and in good shape. The course is not that hard. Alot of short holes but technical layouts make them fun. Im an 11 handicap and shot a 77 (par 70). Par 3s are mostly elevated but under 140 yards. More then a few par 4s are under 300, just out of driving distance and a few would be drivable ones have a bend or hazard that make them less then desirable to attempt. 2 short par 5s make for feel good birdie or even eagle attempts. Prices are great. 9 am walking rate on a holiday ran me 19 bucks. Give it a go its worth a visit.-Skyhook
I just enjoy this coarse
Nice golf course. The course is very difficult.
Affordable golfing and a good course
Nice people n beautiful place
I think its a great course for the price.
I love this place. This is where our high school golf team practices I go to high point high school I graduate 2014
Terrible course. Zero fairways anywhere. And terrible customer service.
Been a member at Gunpowder since the early 1970s.
The school away from the university is that
