A fantastic experience. A great look at Michigan History, and very cool look at Michigan through the decades. This is a great opportunity for experiential learning for multiple age groups. This museum is easily accessible and easy to follow. The museum is clean, easy to learn from, and super easy to follow. The numerous hands on options keep younger children from being tempted by the areas that are not hands on. Great experience all around!
We love our beautiful state! Proud Michiganders. The museum was very informational, beautiful and creative. Only downfall would be that some of the paintings/exhibits didn’t have a description, and there’s no arrows helping navigate you through. However, it was fairly easy to make sure we saw everything and it was very informative. Great representation of our wonderful state!
Fun place to check out some Michigan history. There are three floors of exhibits the kids had fun going through the whole place.
Love this Museum if you ever want to know more about the state that you live in this is a great place to learn new things
Great place, great price! We spent 4 hours here. Lots of history.
Very nice museum, well worth the $6 charge for adults!
We went on a field trip and it was very educational and so much to explore. We actually ran out of time and didnt get to see it all!
Love it here! They approach Michigan history in a fun way. Reasonable admission fee.
A casual representation of Michigans history. I visited with my daughters class. It was fun. Well definitely visit again when we can spend more time there: an hour wasnt nearly enough.
A great place to take your kids, or just to visit if you want to learn more about the history of Michigan. They do a great job of telling the history of the Native Americans who lived here, as well as the newer history of European settlers. The massive white pine in the middle of the building has always been a personal favorite of mine.
This place was very educational, very clean and contained a ton of information and items. My only issue, if I had to be picky would be navigating all the floors. Not all elevators took you to all floors, and we didnt see any signs directing us to a different elevator for the other content. We missed the top floor because the elevator we were at didnt seem to take us there and we didnt know where the other one was. I have a knee injury and the stairs werent an option that day. Small signs might be useful to navigate. I didnt notice any if there were any. Gift store was also really well put together. Thank you for having us!!
Loved every room! Went with 4th graders and had a blast!
This is a true gem in the Lansing area. I have grown up going to this museum as often as I could and I still go whenever I get a chance. Every time I visit I see something new. Whether its an ever changing special exhibit or just letting the permanent displays take you back in time to when Michigan was number one in all the land, this place has something for everyone. Please take a trip if you have never been or if you have go back. Its well worth any drive you have to make and its free!
A deeply imaginative 3 story display of Michigans rich history. Our favorite section was early man in Michigan, but truly every part was so full of photos, artifacts and interactive displays you could easily go every year and still find new things to discover about our great state!
Took my 13-year-old granddaughter from VA there. We spent hours walking through all the extensive MI history from pre-historic to Native Americans to Mining and Cars. So worth the $6/$2 admission
We make an annual trip out of this each February. The ground floor has a different exhibit each time we go. Always a fun and educational experience.
It is a fun and educational place to go but I am very upset that they still remain closed during the pandemic.
Great place to learn about michigans history. I went on a date here and its a lot of fun! Great way to kill a couple of hours.
Excellent exhibits! Interesting for all ages 5 and up .
I always have a blast... I have been going there since I was really little. And now I have brought all of children there, youngest love and shes only 3 years old.
This is a museum I went to for a class field trip I also enjoy going here
This was very interesting with all the displays and it was free since it was sunday
Hands on, clean and well organized.
Wealth of Michigans history.
Awesome museum! Hands on activities and intricate floor plan makes you feel like youre living in the past.
Great place to spend some time learning the history of Michigan. Nice exhibits. You can spend a lot of time in here if you really want to take it all in.
Awesome! The curators were very knowledgeable. I cant wait to go back!
Love this place a great learning opportunity for the whole family.
Its a nice museum to visit. We tend to bring our exchange students here when we can. I think the exchange kids like the Iron Museum better though.
Michigan History Center in Lansings city center enjoys all the accessibility amenities that come with a publicly funded modern building. The museum houses creatively assembled exhibitions chronicling Michigans timeline including Ice Age, English/French/American wars, civil war, and the industrial boom years. Media, exhibits, and some hands-on interaction all help to build a worthwile experience. The museum also provides targeted assistance for school groups including tours and project related learning.
Love this place! The secret life of Michigan objects is a must see! I also love the Union Hall exhibit!
We enjoyed our time at the Michigan History Center, though I must be honest and say that we were beginning to wonder when we stepped in to the prison exhibit when you first walk through the door. Other than that, I think the exhibits were very informative, interesting, and well done. I especially liked the military history, manufacturing history, automobile history, and the areas covering the Great Depression. I would highly recommend all with an interest in history to visit this place!
Wonderful museum explaining the history of Michigan from the ice age to present. The mining and logging exhibits are particularly wonderful and well done. The whole museum is fascinating. We were so impressed that we asked about a membership (they dont have that at this time). Great exhibits and knowledgeable staff. Well worth a visit.
Good day trip with a good amount of stuff to see. Exhibits are well done
Nice collection of information on timeline. Need more.
Had a great time with my grandson. Awesome people working the paleontology and archeological event. Digging finding artifacts. working with clay. Shooting a spear the old way and scavenger hunt that took us to interesting people that answered my grandsons questions.
Lots to see. Well organized. Could be more balanced as cultural/social diversity in Michigan.
Such an awesome place!
The Michigan History Center is hands down one of the best experiences Lansing has to offer. This is a must visit attraction that the entire family will find enjoyable, no matter the age. It takes you on a trip through time and the history of Michigan, but within the context of the ancient history of the North American continent and the birth of the USA, right up to current times. There are a fascinating array of high quality exhibits, both grand and detailed in scope, and many interactive features as well. There is a wow moment around every corner. You absolutely do not need to be a Michigan native to enjoy this museum. Go there now. Or you can wait until Sunday, when parking and admission are free. This place is first rate, all the way.
One of my favorite museums ever! Ive been to tons of museums and this one is amazing, the selection is hands down awesome and the displays are crazy cool. I learned so much there and hope to go back again! Theres so much to see it took a couple hours to see it all! By far the best thing there is the indoor house, I was enthralled with this exhibit and still am! It feels charming and homey with a modern twist to the history of this beautiful state!
An awesome stop if you want to bring kids
Not really a museum person, but this one was actually really cool. Volunteers were amazing, displays were immersive, and cant say enough about how interesting it was. Highly recommend!
Needs more publicity. Great place, very few visitors on a weekday. Parking was reasonably priced.
Wonderful facility for meetings. Staff is very accommodating. Ive been told by my colleagues the museum is fascinating, one day I hope to make it past the first floor.
I always hated history as a kid but the older I get the more interesting this place gets. I personally think that kids should go when they are a little bit older so they can actually enjoy it. Our school goes in third grade and a lot of the kids just want to run around. I think its a better idea to go in Junior High so they actually understand what they are looking at. Its a great place to go for a family day thats fun and educational too!
4th grade field trip for my sons school. Amazing!
Grandkids and I love going here so they can learn about their home state.
Wonderful place for introverts. :) Friendly helpful staff that explain things well.
Nice place to go learn about Mis history. We enjoyed our stay. The volunteers were very good at sharing their knowledge. My kids asked alot of questions and they were kind enough to answer each one of them. P.S free entry on Sundays
Nice museum. Set up well with volunteers and employees to share info. My 4th grader wants to bring her younger siblings back.
The admission was really affordable and the exhibits were set up in chronological order which established a really nice flow. There were also a lot of hands on learning options that were fun for kids but great for adults too!
This is a hidden treasure I didnt even know was in Michigan. We LOVE Michigan so it was great to learn more about it. So much for children to do and adults, too!
Lots of interesting information and historical pieces to remind the younger generation where we came from.
Absolutely loved this place. Everyone is a pleasure to meet. You would be amazed on how many awesome things there are to see here.
We didnt have enough time so well be back next week. What we saw was great though
New displays are great. Still love the mining exhibit.
My girlfriend and I went here for a day and it was a very cool experience to see how Michigan has had a role in many different eras of U.S. history. As History teachers ourselves it was very cool to see how we could use the connections to further the studies in our classrooms.
This place is incredible!! We went to the historic museum. It has the history of our state from the Ice Age through the 1970s. The exhibits are great, you get a good feel of what is displayed and how it fits in with our history. I have lived in Michigan my whole life and learned many new things. Plan to spend a lot of time here. We got there at 12 noon and stayed until they closed at 4:30pm. We made it to everything but the last floor!
We visited the museum on this trip. Excellent display of Michigan history.
Amazing museum! Their exhibition is wonderful. BTW, Sunday is free for everyone.
Tells the amazing story of the great state of Michigan, chronologically, from pre-history to the present. Beautiful artifacts and lots of information. Learned lots of new Michigan history facts and would be happy to visit again!
Actually a fun place to go. The museum is a good museum of Michigan history and prehistory, with a great State library attached.
This is definitely one of my favorite museums! I live in DC but am from Michigan, so every museum I go to gets compared to the Smithsonian in my head. Luckily, this museum still stacks up! The timespan of the museum, from ice age to present, is perfect for the dynamic place that Michigan truly is. There are plenty of places to pose for a picture, and adult admission of $6 is well worth the fun afternoon you will have.
Had a blast would love to go back!
Nice view of the stages of michigan history. Allow a couple hours to fully view exhibits.
I always love coming here! Brings back childhood memories.
Beautiful place. Parking was a little hard to figure out at first. Not many signs to help you figure out how/where to park. Came here for the HLAA2019 State Convention. The rooms are large and accommodating. We had a speaker come in to talk about Aural Rehab. The room was looped.
Exemplary attitude towards Canadians and alliwed my husband and myself to become Michigan Researchers! Heres a Michiganonian: Rebecca Burdette Sweets niece, Elizabeth Emma Burdette Brown Horsman, my grandmother. Rebecca was born just over the Canadian border in Plymbdon, Lambdon, Wyoming Canada in 1833. Elizabeth Emma was born on February 27th, 1870. Rebeccas sister, my great grandmother, Jane Burdette Brown was one year younger, born in 1834.
What a nice walk (ride) for us back into time for Michigan...it is a fun tour
Planning to go back. Ran out of time. Did not get to the library part so we are currently planning a return trip. 34.00 for 4 adults and 7 children but 2 were exempt. There are so many hands on things for kids to do. But I even enjoyed it as an adult.
Great place for kids to learn
Great place to take your young ones to learn about Michigan history.
The Michigan History Center is hands down one of the best experiences Lansing has to offer. This is a must visit attraction that the entire family will find enjoyable, no matter the age. It was wonderful looking @ the past of Michigan & how it has progressed through the years. I would definitely recommend this place 4 everyone 2 enjoy.
Pretty cool place - I was impressed and surprised by the amount of real artifacts they used to help tell the story of the time period
Not a bad half day trip. Some of the exhibits show their age,but mostly well kept. The modern era section seems to be the nicest part. Inexpensive, and I believe free on certain days.
Went to the archeology day and it as amazing, free event with tons of free stuff to collect while you do a scavenger hunt!
Neat place! Great for kids.
Definitely a nice little museum to spend an afternoon in. Lots of hands on exhibits for the kids. Take a look around the library if you have time as well!
New exhibits coming, great history, great place for All ages
This museum would not be at the top of mine and my kids favorite. I was going to give it a three but I thought Id be kind. The museum could use more interactive exhibits for the kids and find a way to make the material more interesting. I was bored by the end of the tour. Also a better cafe would be wonderful.
The museum is well organized and very educational. I would avoid going during field trip season because of the crowds. There is a large lunchroom with a small cafeteria in one corner that sells a limited menu. There are vending machines with a variety of drinks as well. The museum itself is well maintained with exhibits from all eras in Michigan. I would recommend this place for field trips and family outings.
I was pleasantly surprised by the breadth and scope of the Michigan Historical Museum. From its earliest known inhabitants to the arrival of Europeans to the long road to development. Its a varied and colourful history with significant eras showcased in visually interesting ways. Some of the docents are extremely helpful and insightful. Definitely a good day out with the family, wrapped up with a nice walk and visit to the State Capital building.
Cool place, it was a little overwhelming with how much stuff there was for every display. Im a minimalist though. Good experience for the kids, but mostly cerebral.
I had a awesome experience and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and offered their educational history knowledge
Brought back so many childhood memories! Everything is very well preserved and awesome
Great place, lots to see. Love seeing the history of michigan there in one place.
One of my favorite museums - maybe because it is local, or maybe because I have volunteered so many times with classrooms - there are little nuggets of Michigan history here to spark all levels of the history buff. Most of my visits were educational and the docents working there were polite and helpful.
The staff were great at teaching both children and adults about the history of Michigan.
Lots of interesting exhibits detailing Michigans history. Really cool features with hands-on exhibits for the kids. The staff and docents are friendly and go out of their way. Its not a typical history museum, its more of an experience
A Michigan gem! Lots of neat exhibits. Great place for kids!
This is seriously a cool museum. Michigan history from 15,000bce through to contemporary times. Its elaborate sets (walk through a copper mine, a 19th century town center, etc) are visually stunning and information-dense. Def a good museum for kids and adults alike. Allow yourself 1-5 hours. Theres a lot to take in. I LOVE this museum!
Good information, nice docents, great day!
Great museum to take your kids, lots of history artifact, fun for kids and grownups, a must see
This museum was very interesting and inexpensive.
Lots of early Michigan history. Civil War memorabilia, auto industry exhibits.
Well done and expansive museum about Michigan history! Pro tip: The museum is free on Sundays!
It was great not to busy so was easy to get around.
Greatest secret museum Michigan has to offer. None of my friends that live in the area knew about it... We had a great time.
